Do I get First to Review 2012? It is tough to add anything to what has already been said bout this centre piece of Halifax food and culture. I guess if anything I must admit to taking it for granted, not having enjoyed it for several months. This visit was on a cold Tuesday evening in February. We popped in in an effort to avoid some rush hour traffic thinking that it would be a nice quiet little place to spend some time. It was packed! People waiting for tables! Fortunately we were able to pick up one of the last vacant chairs.

The food was great. The lamb burger with a side of their famous sweet potato fries was hot and delicious. The steak and mushroom thingy had gravy spilling onto the fries and drool spilling down the chin of my table mate. Both filled us up nicely.

Now to say a few words about the atmosphere. On this cold Tuesday night there was a table of recognizable provincial MLA's, a couple of neighbours from way back when and a former colleague who pleasantly stopped by to say hi. Now Halifax is not that big a place, but still, it is notable that this is a place to be. Even if one doesn't "know" anyone, one just feels home here. This place should be listed in wikipedia under the definition for "pub" - more than just great food and beer.

I hadn't been to the Old Triangle in a very long time, and the bf had never gone. So as an alternative to Maxwell's we ventured over to Prince Street. Our experience varied throughout the evening. When we arrived the place was packed to the doors so we opted to sit on the patio. At the time, there was no one else out there so I went in and spoke to a server to ensure that the patio was in fact open, it was. Well it took a good 20 minutes for anyone to bring us some menu's and only after the bf went in AGAIN to tell someone we were waiting outside while we contemplated leaving. We stayed and the server was friendly enough, but continued to call us "kids" over and over again.

The food was fantastic. I had a Smoked Salmon sandwich on Ciabatta. Other meals included Fish N Chips, and Burgers accompanied by Curry Gravy. The consensus was that everything was really fantastic. No one left hungry. I wasn't feeling beer so I had a Caesar, which was one of the best I have ever had. The rest of the group shared a couple of pitchers. The server had asked if I wanted another Caesar, I said yes but it never came.

So now back to the negative. When we went inside to pay it took a while. We stood by the cash as servers came and went without acknowledging us. I understand that you're busy, and we weren't YOUR table but at least flash a smile so that you can see we are waiting. JEESH You could also let us know that someone will be with us shortly.   I don't take kindly to be ignored, and where it happened more than once it reflected in my tip.

This is a fun pub to visit with a lively atmosphere and free irish music, but the real reason I will come back here again and again .... ERDINGER DUNKEL and Erdinger! This beer is one of my favorites and is hard to find. I also love Affligem and they have this by the bottle as well.

On to the food. I was going to get a burger until I was reminded you can only get burgers well done in Canada. Not a fan. My mom got the burger and it looked small to me. I decided to try something new and went for the curried chicken over sweet potato fries with mushy peas. Yes, mushy peas. It doesn't sound appetizing but I was quite impressed. The curry sauce was yummy over the fries and the chicken was very tender. It is loud at the Old Triangle and you might have trouble finding a seat, so come a little before the band starts (around 9 pm).

My sister and I went to The Old Triangle last night for a late supper and to hear some Celtic music.

The pub was jammed but we were able share a table near the stage with a couple from Italy on their honeymoon.

As always, my Keith's tasted good. It was especially refreshing since the pub was really warm (there wasn't a lot of air flowing).

My sister had a Grilled Vegetable Pizza (thin foccacia crust basted with homemade tomato sauce, topped with balsamic grilled peppers, cremini mushrooms, red onion, zucchini, mozzarella cheese). She said it was okay.

I had Killeybegs Style Fish (fresh haddock, beer battered and served with homemade tartar sauce, coleslaw and lemon). It was good.

The band was Scott "Scotty-Dawg" MacDonald and Anthony "Shaggy-Dawg" Rissesco of the Gig Dogs. They were really good and played lots of Celtic songs.    Roger Stone joined them for the second set.

I like the Old Triangle. It's a fun place that always seems to have something going on

"Where do I take my 50-something aunt?" I felt myself pondering one afternoon, and just then I happened to hear laughs coming from an intimate patio. There was my answer, The Old Triangle!

At first I assumed it was going to be the after work and almost retired hangout of Halifax, but I was surprisingly mistaken. Sort of. The crowd is older, more mature, and from the view I saw, of higher class. However, the room did play host to plenty of 20-30 year olds-- which brought a comfort level for everyone in attendance.

I was pleasantly surprised they had some cream-ales on tap, and had some live celtic music. Another nice mention-able is that the band plays in a far corner which gives you fellow drinkers the option to be drown out by music, or sit away and have the option to chat at normal octave levels.

By the end of my experience that night I found myself quickly recruiting others to accompany me the following night.

    That's right I'm a fan.

Fish and chips and ale, oh my!

A few of our local colleagues recommended this as THE place to go to throw back a pint.  My traveling companion had tried to get in here on previous visits, to no avail.

We were not disappointed.  The place is classic pub, with warm, friendly hues, attractive wood finish everywhere.  We immediately were served with Propeller Porter from the tap.

Presented with the extensive menu, we looked over the wide selection of pub-like offerings, but our fate had been sealed long before we arrived:  fish and chips.  Fresh haddock, very tender and delicious with a nice batter, perfectly done chips topped with a bit of vinegar and we were in pub-heaven!

The Old Triangle is a great place to grab some pub grub and a beer. It's always busy, so that means that sometimes service is slow, but you can tell that it's due to the numerous customers, and not just server laziness. The food won't change your life, but it's pretty good (although the prices are a bit high on some of the menu options), and the bar has a huge variety of beers on tap. From the top level of the restaurant with its intimate cubby-hole tables, to the main floor with the band and the bar, you can find a variety of ambiences in this lively spot, and be guaranteed a great Maritime pub experience.

The Old Triangle, to me, is one of the most reliable drinking hangouts in the city. It's a favourite of mine for a number of reasons - good pub grub, great live music, awesome bar staff and a cool atmosphere.

This place is normally a busy spot, so get ready to hover over those that look like they've just paid the cheque. No worries though, you can act like a hawk while getting a drink at the bar, and by the time you've got a drink in hand, that table will be yours! In some cases nice people will offer to move tables if they've got a small crowd/big table and you have a big crowd/no table. I like nice people.

I also made a special visit here on St. Patty's day this year - I'd heard all the hype about getting up and drinking ridiculously early - memories of undergrad start flowing back to me - and it was definitely worth the early alarm, long line outside and raucous crowd. Breakfast was standard, but tasty, and my only regret is that I wasn't able to stay for the duration of the day. It seemed to me that people actually camp out  for the entire day!

Oh, and step up and be a man and order the Steak and Steak and Chips.

The best thing about my twenties thus far is hands down the new social occasion of drinking with my parents. I know, I know...'who wants to drink with their parents?'...but screw you guys because I totally do. You can keep your pub crawls and wine tastings. My parents are cool, funny, can hold their liquor, and usually pay. There's a whole lotta winning happening over here.

The Old Triangle is a perfect drink-with-the-folks venue. The crowd is neither too young nor too old, the Irish/Maritimes music makes a more family-friendly ambiance than Ke$ha, the drink menu can please Cheap Drunks and Scotch Snobs alike, and the food menu soaks up so you can power through. Plus if you are of Irish decent at some point along the line, drinking at The Old Triangle becomes a patriotic celebration of your family heritage rather than just getting sloppy in front of Mom and Dad.

The summer patio makes for a great place to hydrate while you're out on the town while catching some shade and sweet potato fries. On the other hand, there are tables and chairs of all shapes and sizes inside during the off season including more private booth-room-things in the back if you can snag one before the happy hour crowd gets in.

So make your momma proud during your next drinking occasion. Instead of chasing after one-night-stands with bottles in paper bags, invite the parents along to partake in a more civilized libation occasion that usually ends up in you getting some great dirt on what your folks were like during college. THAT's information you can take right to the bank. Or the officiator of their will. I'm just trying to look out for you guys here.

This is one of the places in the city that I always end up at, no matter what's transpired previously that evening (post-wine fair scotch anyone?) There are pros and cons to the place, depending on what you're expecting, the food is generally pretty good pub fare (their curry chips are phenomenal), but nothing out of the ordinary. The menu is huge though, and has lots of options so even the pickier eaters can find something.

It's often really noisy in the lower section, due to live music, so if you're looking for an intimate chat, try the snugs on the third level. The service is always fast, always fairly consistent and friendly. Definitely a solid choice for a drink with a group of friends, and the perfect place to party on St. Patrick's day. Wait in line, it's worth it.

I've said it before and will again, I wish half stars were an option. I judge the Triangle on a number of things: location, atmosphere, service, and food.

Location and atmosphere are excellent and so is the look of the place. I have a soft spot for the "pub" look which could be attributed to my like of many things British (Go Liverpool!) and the ideal of the British countryside/community pub.

Service on this occasion (Saturday past) was just okay. The server was friendly but not attentive. Long waits between visits to the table and receiving our bills and such. I'm big on customer service so this is an item that can get to me (side rant: service on the whole stinks. Perhaps because there are fewer professional servers than before?).

The food as well was just okay. I had the Curry and Chips with smushy Peas with sweet potato fries and curry mayo on the side. It has been a while since I've had it I thought I remembered it more fondly than this experience. Curry was thinner than I expected and didn't really have a bite. I love sweet potato fries and these are good and also love the curry mayo. I don't like paying extra for the the curry mayo though (side rant 2: if you are offered or even ask for something like curry mayo, I think the server should identify that there is a charge for it right then - not that the 75cents was a big deal).

I went big and had the gingerbread for dessert and again it was okay but not great. And somehow I remember it being better.

I like the Old Triangle and will go back; but, I wish that the food was more of a lasting positive impression.

One of those places you're supposed to try in Halifax.

I didn't really get a sense of the food here, only condescending to have a cheeseburger. Borin' ole 'merican me! But I appreciated the live Celtic music, even if the bar's walls made the music sound 3x louder than it should. It was here that I had my first Alexander Keith's, a local beer, and it really isn't that bad.

I sat in an oversized chair whilst dining, got kind of drunk and then people watched with my friend. I surmised that this is like any pub in the states or anywhere for that matter: there isn't much going on so you might as well get hammered if you're not aware of any special things on the menu. Besides, the cool Irish decals and decor will look cooler if you're faded anyway

If I ever go back to Halifax, I'll be sure to try something a little more daring on the menu, and put on the drinking version of my game face.

The Triangle is a reasonably genuine take on an Irish pub, except that it is large. It is divided onto three sections: a bar, a performance space, and a restaurant. The pub section was the most lively at lunch, so we sat there. We ordered fish (haddock) and chips. The haddock was so lightly breaded and not greasy at all. The true flavor of the fish came through. We also quaffed Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale (on tap), which was fantastic. The service was warm and friendly.

This was the best pub we visited in Halifax. It has great atmosphere and vibe and it also has the best food plus a great beer selection.

This place is what I would call a "standby" for me - basically if I have to eat downtown or want to grab a beer and listen to some music, this is the place I usually fall back on if I can't think of a new place I want to try.

A friend and I decided on supper here to precede the Heart concert on Thursday evening (which was a-freakin-mazing, by the way, thanks for asking). I got there around 5pm so there were still many tables free - the crowds would not arrive for another hour or so. This was nice because we had prime choice for tables. One great thing about the Triangle is that there generally is a lot of seating choice as it goes back quite far - downside to this is that you can rarely get a table close to the stage (even at 5pm almost all the tables right in front were full!). This can be annoying if you wanna listen to some tunes. But that night we were just interested in food so it wasn't such an issue at that time...

Anyway, I was extremely boring and safe and ordered the Chicken Caesar Wrap. This was the boring and safe option because it's what I pretty much ALWAYS order when I eat here, and it's something that you can order at pretty much any establishment so there isn't really anything special about it. However, I always find it tastes yummy - it always has lots of dressing and TONS of chicken, plus they include mushrooms which adds a nice punch of flavour. Plus it's an excuse to eat some of their Sweet Potato Fries with curry mayo which tastes delish (and I'm not really a curry fan, but it just has a HINT of heat, so perfect for someone who doesn't like too much spice). It's especially ridiculous that I order this every time because The Triangle is a good place to eat if you want to try something "different" as they have a fair number of traditional Irish and Scottish dishes. Now I'm not such a fan of eating sheep head's and the like so many of these options wouldn't necessarily be my cup of tea, but it's nice to know that the options are there if I decide to be adventurous someday.

*I should note that it's a great place to go on St Patty's Day as they have great music and fun Irish food/drinks all day - but NO JOKE you need to be outside by 7am or you're not getting a table. Seriously*

My friend and I noticed they have raised their prices though - not sure how recently but we definitely noticed, and were not fans of that. I had my wrap and a beer and it cost me $26-something, which I feel is too expensive (though I'm what you would call "thrifty" so perhaps I'm biased). It tasted great, but not that great. In the end it IS a pub, not a fancy restaurant so I feel prices should be a little less steep. I will say, however, that our server was great and they usually are there - plus we were greeted as soon as we walked in, which is a small gesture but (for me) can make all the difference.

All in all it was my usual good experience at a great downtown staple.

Unless you're a disgraced former politician with a drinking problem The Old Triangle is probably already your after work watering hole of choice if you work downtown. Boy does this place fill up quickly on Friday afternoons.

And rightfully so, this is a great pub! The staff are really quick considering the crowd and it seems like there is always an old friend or new friend coming in the front door.

The Triangle has live music almost every night and is definitely worth a stop if you're looking for a pint and some tunes. It delivers a far more authentic Nova Scotian experience because it doesn't actively pursue it , it just is (how's that for depth!).

Definitely stop in here some afternoon on your way home from work and have a drink and a few laughs, you will not be disappointed.

Two birthdays, one BFF, fresh to Canadian soil, and her adorable British boyfriend in hand?

The Old Triangle wouldn't be my first choice, but who can deny a birthday girl's wishes. Perhaps I'll just thank my lucky stars we didn't end up at a live performance of Signal Hill, and enjoy this much loved pub for what it is.

The place was surprisingly packed for a Tuesday evening, but that didn't stop our crowd of 12 in getting some solid seating.  A few adjoining tables and pinot grigios later, the ol' Triangle proved itself as a lovely place for a  gathering. Our server did a great job with this eclectic grouping of gabbers. Meals and drinks were timely, and it was all provided with the utmost professionalism and politeness. Great guy!

Although, its the nature of my main meal that brings me to a frown. Not exactly swayed by the extensive selection of pub-fare, I opted for the 40 Shades of Green large salad, with Honey Lime Yogurt dressing. I love salads, perhaps a little too eagerly, and the described dressing sounded promising-- pumped!

Unfortunately, the 40 shades of Green is quite literally JUST green. Was I wrong to expect more than a basic sprinkling of field greens? 'Cuz thats what it was. The few sliced cucumbers made for the exciting component of this salad, and after having to request my forgotten side of dressing, I was overwhelmed by disappointment. The dressing was not the slightest bit tasty, and as I gazed around at sweet potato fries, burgers, and full-bodied poutines, I felt like a rabbit on calorie count.

Sigh. Just talking about it makes me want sandwich. Although, the wine made my spendage tolerable. A friend and I split a bottle of PG for $30 (15 each), which was delicious, and a massive bottle! We got about 3 1/2 glasses out of it each... and alongside my empty tum, a fair buzzy buzz.

Overall, The Old Triangle provides one of the best pub experiences in the city. I'll suggest avoiding the 40 shades salad, and to embrace the pub-fare full force. Quality service and a great atmosphere, many can love this Halifax haunt.

    I love this pub!

I definitely recommend tapping into your real/borrowed irish roots next time you're heading out for the night. I guarantee you won't be disappointed with 'The Triangle.' With live music every night of the week and a great selection of beer on top, it's pretty hard not to get in the spirit of things at The Old Triangle.

Some of my favorites about this place aside from the ambience: The Celtic burger, Killeybegs style fish and Mary Gallagher's Irish Stew. The Triangle gets extra points for having unique salad options as well.  Ok so 'organic baby greens' might not be authentic irish fair but not everyone wants to eat fish and chips just because they're at a pub. General points for having such a large menu/wide breadth of options.

The tiered levels at The Triangle mean you can usually get close to the band or tuck yourself away into one of their booths at the back, all depending on your preference.

The staff at The Triangle are some of the best in terms of efficiency. You might not get the banter or cheery grin you were expecting from an irish bar maid, but aren't you there to talk to whoever you came with anyway?

One tip for The Triangle: Get some bouncers who act as though they've experienced human interaction before.

Fun Fact: The Triangle serves traditional Irish breakfast on St. Paddy's day from 7am-10am. All proceeds go to 'An Cumann' -The Irish Association of Nova Scotia.

Oh, ye Old Triangle - this place gives me those toe-tappin', top-o-tha-mornin' type of feelings inside. Perhaps it's because the only time I've ever spent a long period of time here was on St. Paddy's Day, so maybe I just conflate this place with put on Irish accents and tacky green "Kiss Me" shirts.

Well, now that I've ranted a tad, let's get on with ye old business, shall we? This place is a cool looking establishment. With different levels, lots of wood, and tons of windows, the vibes set forth by the building alone are grand.

I've enjoyed the hops liquid diet here, ordering pitchers and snacking on a bit of pub-fare. The service has been pretty quick, but when it's raucous, plan to wait awhile.

I wouldn't say that I'd pick this place as a destination of choice, but hey, if I ended up here for a bit, I wouldn't mind all that much. As long as there aren't a ton of inebriated obnoxious folks, it can be an okay time. Swing by for an after work bevie; the post 9-5 crowd often filters her from the downtown core to loosen some ties and take a load off.

There was a cold Nor'easter heading our way. You could smell the sea salt in the air. Quickly, we docked our boat at the pier and climbed up the twenty-ish steep meters up to the nearest door in sight. The welcoming picture of large pints of Guinness and Smithwicks as well as local faves like Propellor could be seen shining through the warm glow of the glass windows. We gingerly opened the door...unsure of our fate. The aroma of fried chips emanated from the door crack. Bustling servers could be seen scurrying to an fro with a pile of plates and beers. Our journey was over...we had made it to Halifax.

Maybe it didn't quite happen so much that way, but after a missed flight in TO and only a few hours of sleep the night before...we, the walking dead by the time we entered, were tired and hungry and needed a respite. I needed a beer. She needed food. Problem solved at TOTAH.

We were greeted promptly and as luck would have it, a small table appeared before us just recently vacated. We walked in at approx. 7ish pm and the place was bustling with activity. Looking over the menu it seemed to be your run of the mill pub house with an Irish bent to it. The food was distinctively Haligonian tho - fish and chips, pan-fried haddock, fish chowder. We couldn't resist. I took a small pint of Smithwicks and ordered the fish and chips in lieu of my first choice, haddock au gratin (they were out - Boo!). She supplemented with the Blarney crab dip and a cup of their creamy seafood chowder. I second guessed myself for one second when I saw another table's pan fried haddock...no worries, the thickly battered but tender fish made up for that - crispy but juicy on the inside. The chips were satisfyingly good too - crisp and done well. The true highlights were the seafood chowder and the crab dip. Both included succulent and large pieces of seafood throughout. The soup was a perfect texture and thickness for us - not too runny and not too thick.

Overall, good hearty food well matched for any beer or ravenous traveler. It's a shame we weren't able to try the haddock au gratin, but we'll just have to visit the Maritimes again, won't we? Thank you, TOTAH, for a warm and satisfying welcome!

If I was, say, an older gentleman, with distinguished graying hair, and quite possibly, an Irish accent, I would no doubt be giving the Old Triangle a five-star review - because this would be the pub where I felt most at home.

I am, uh, none of those things, so the place just gets three stars  from me, but it's not because there's anything wrong with it. It's just not my cup of tea.

That said, it's not a bad place for a drink and a meal with your work buddies, but be prepared to deal with the occasional table of obnoxious college boys. (I'm just a wee 5'1" woman and once nearly got into a full-out bar brawl with a table-full of said bully-type boys.)

And if you like a bit of the deedly-dee music, you can have your fill here; there's always some little band with a tinwhistle and a bodhran playing up front.

Favourite menu item: the curry and chips, complete with mushy peas.

My husband and I entered the pub on a whim, and were pleasantly surprised to find great pub food served here. Plates are generous and seafood is a forte. The seafood chowder was hearty, warm, and chock full of perfectly cooked clams, scallops, and fish. Fish and chips were good, if not a little thickly battered and firm (for my taste). The savory crab dip obviously contained plenty of fresh crab, although I would have preferred it to be accompanied by a sliced crusty baguette rather than the dry crumbly toasted rounds provided. Overall, solid and comforting pub grub that was particularly appreciated on a blustery Halifax day.

An Irish pub with a huge menu. A fiddler was playing when I arrived, and people were performing traditional Irish dance. Great place, friendly service and lots of yummy beer on tap. Try the fish cakes.

Fun crowd, great food, live music and...Irish!

I have to admit, this review will be a bit biased because I love Irish and Celtic music. And the Old Triangle has both along with some great food at reasonable pricing. The Old Triangle has an unusual layout for a restaurant in Halifax. It has three levels. The first is where the live band plays, the bar lives and where you can also eat and drink. The second and third levels are strictly set up for eating. But no section is closed off, so you can always hear the music which is never too loud. Its always lively at the Old Triangle and the wait staff are always a bit too busy. Which leads me to the Wait Staff. They are generally great. From time-to-time we will be served by Staff who seem a bit overworked but I have never had a bad experience that stands out. When the crowd size is near capacity, I just don't see smiles on their faces. And I miss it because some of them have great smiles ;)

The Old Triangle is a great example of Celtic and Irish culture. It has been around for a long time and with good reason. I have gone there many times and plan on going again in the not-so-distant future. If you want a fun Celtic experience in Halifax, the Old Triangle better be on your list.

I am a local and love the atmosphere at the Old Triangle. I love the food, beer and people.. Go with an open mind.. Place is usually always busy, especially after work and lunch hour. Highly recommended.
