Hubby and I have been wanting to try this place since reading the reviews. I have a family member that works at the sister location The Black Friar so I hear about the menu/beer selections all the time. We stopped in on a random Tue night to grab a beer and some food (5/22). I was thrilled to see they have Stone IPA on tap, one of our favorites! The food was good hubby enjoyed the french fries, I had the guiness stew which the meat and veggies were good but the broth was a little too thin for me to call it a stew. The determining factor on the three stars was the bartender who couldn't have cared less we were there. Normally I would ignore it as poor staffing choices, however this dude actually ignored us once his friends showed up (literally!!). He flirted with the girl to our right...I pushed the credit card towards him...nadda. He high fived his friends....I got off my seat and gave one of his friends my seat hoping he would notice...nadda. Finally when the bartender was ignoring us and about to take shots one of his friend pointed to us. Seriously a fellow customer had to nudge him so we could pay the tab and leave, need I say more?
Oh and yes the bartender did comp 2 drinks but at that point too little too late, I won't be back unless someone drags me there kicking and screaming. -

Good outside area and nice to walk back and forth from this place to Vickery a little further up the street. Food is mostly fried fair and not that great imo, the bar can get busy and it can be hard to get a drink sometimes. Otherwise a good place to hit up on Henderson.
It tends to get a good mixed crowd and has a nice pub feel. -

i'm a fan of the outdoor drinking. i can't say anything for the food, but i think this is an AWESOME place to come in the evenings. -

It doesn't get much better than The Old Monk - a classic pub in a happening neighborhood set the tone for Henderson Avenue way before it's time. The monk has been a Dallas staple long before the avenue was populated with trendy restaurants and bars.
With a beer list that goes on for days boasting domestic and imported beers, this pub doesn't need to try be anything other than an awesome place for awesome people to hang out. No gimmicks, no theme, just a beer spot with amazing food, to boot! I had the mussels today and couldn't be happier with my order.
The dark wood and old Irish beer signs that cover the walls recalls an Irish or German drinking spot and makes you yearn for a whimsical afternoon in Bavaria while eating schnitzel and drinking Spaten.Listed in: Patio Time, The Best of Big D!, Beer!, Henderson Hoopla, Mussel Man

A staple in any drinker's agenda, the Old Monk is consistently on my pub rotation list despite the local parking consternation.
Nice beer, nice patio, and good food, the Monk is a haven in Knox / Henderson. They have a spectacular cheese board, and while they don't offer too many choices as far as micro-brew goes, they have a few European must-drinks: like Newcastle and Kronenbourg 1664. Their whiskey list includes Oban, Laphroaig, and Talisker, which basically means if you are going to drink whiskey at the Monk, you better wear your big girl panties.
The interior is also dark, and on off nights - like Monday, the local barflies and bartenders are more than entertaining. Ask the right person and you may get your nipples bit.Listed in: Best Pubs to Watch Football…

This place is a dude's bar. Let your ladies grab a table and chat about woman stuff, and the guys can grab a seat by the darts and talk like men. Play a game of darts, smoke a cigar, then play some more darts; this time drunk. [Don't drink and drive. Be safe!]
The Old Monk is classic. Great tables, great neighborhood (at times), and a great selection of beers. They had Magners too! That's awesome. Can't find that stuff anywhere. They also have a great selection of other beers, and looks like a great "regular" place.
The service was fantastic, the beer [the choices alone!] were awesome, and we had a great chill night celebrating a friend's birthday. I'd definitely recommend it! -

Shout Out to Jen, the assistant manager at the Monk! So I had a little issue with a guy using my stolen credit card here. (Long, boring story but if I see him again, we will have words.) Jen was extremely helpful, expressed her willingness to talk to police if I filled out a report and called me back with additional info. Totally over and beyond what she needed to do and I appreciate it.
Oh and the service as well as beer selection is always great. Their food rocks: fish and chips is very good.
The patio is a great place to spend an evening. In fact, they have these fancy new heaters that I hope magically turn into misters come June.
In Summary: Great Staff, food, beer selection & atmosphere. I believe this is called a Win-Win in the corporate buzz word community. -

I did brunch here the day after the St. Pat's parade...it was AWESOME! My group showed up like 45 minutes before brunch was to end and our server was very expeditious in bringing me numberous craft's of mimosas (like 6)...her name slips me, but she was nothing short of amazing. The food wasn't lacking either, I had some sort of burger which was pretty great...couldn't finish it and had to take it to go! Smoking patio, which I am a fan of, I smoke.

Who doesn't like The Old Monk? This is THE quentissential Dallas pub. Fantastic beer selection, dark wood interior, warm and inviting atmosphere (feels like home when you walk in), great patio, fun and cool crowd, lots of laughter and toasts and just good times had by all.
Finding a parking spot is a little tricky, but that's not the Monk's fault. That's just Henderson Ave for you. I expect to circle around a bit before finding a spot, but the good thing is that a lot of people go here early, say, around 4:00-4:30, have one or two beers and then move on, so parking spots and tables turn over fairly quickly. -

Cute little pub tucked away on Henderson. I forget about this place but had a great spring evening here last night with some friends on their patio. Had their chicken avocado sandwiches and hoegarden beer on draft. Tons of beers on draft to choose from! Also, great food for pub food!

My fave of all faves.
After living in Dallas for one year, I have finally found MY place and I don't think anyone who's been would disagree. All the tenders are rad, the place is down to earth, menu is legit and the energy compliments everyone's taste.
If I were in the market to buy a bar, this would be it.
Selection is generous and prices are on cue. The corner joint is understated and over delivers. It fulfills any mood; from TOMS and T's to Prada and pumps, there's a seat for every ass. Requirement is to like beer and have a good time! -

I recently found myself hanging out with an old friend back home in Dallas. Said friend is a self-proclaimed beer snob, so I set out to find a place with a selection appropriate for his discerning palate. This place did the trick.
The Old Monk was pretty busy for a Sunday night, but we were still able to find a table in a reasonable amount of time I started with a glass o' chardonnay (because I'm a freak of nature and don't like beer), and my friend got himself some sort of raspberry chocolate stout thing that beer snobs get. I was also looking for a light dinner, so I ordered some mussels, because you can't go wrong with mussels.
My wine hit the spot, and my friend was quite complimentary toward his beer selection. The mussels were fresh, done in a classic white wine/garlic/butter type sauce with lots of bread for dipping. Round two consisted of two of the Knox Chox, which is some tasty hot chocolate with a bit of butterscotch schnapps. I also got some calamari, which I recognize is not very complimentary with the drink selections, but at least I didn't get cheese, right?
The service here was quite good for a bar, which means it wasn't exceptional but good enough. Prices were reasonable, especially for food. It was pretty loud in here, which is not so good for catching up with an old friend, but we were able to get it done.
I will likely bring beer snobs here in the future when I am in Dallas. -

I really, really enjoy this place. They have a great beer selection, some awesome specialty cocktails, and their food is really pretty great!
I love the atmosphere. It's relaxing and great for a drink or two after work, but it's also fairly high energy. The servers are friendly and speedy. They have a great patio area.
The food I've had so far has been great! Their veggie burger made in house is SO tasty! You can tell it's made fresh and isn't one of those out of the box frozen things. And their cheese selection... oh boy how I love cheese. Mmmmm. Definitely no complaints there!
But steer clear of any of their fried foods... (aside from their french fries, which are great!) I've had the fried mushroom appetizer and seen the fried calamari and... blegh. They say it's tempura battered and fried, but it looks like they use the fish & chips type batter for everything, which isn't great and makes it pretty greasy. Pass.
Overall, love the Old Monk! -
Review from Angie H.
The Old Monk has a kick ass Rueben and pretty strong drinks. It's super casual and in a good area for other restaurants and bars. I've only been once so I'll have to go again to see if it effects my rating, but it seemed like an okay place to grab some drinks and I'd definitely eat there again.

Years ago when I first moved to Dallas and craft brewing was just in its infancy... The Old Monk was the bomb. The patio is amazing and they had some great European beers.
But now, with the likes of the Moth and Goodfriend around, The Old Monk hasn't stood the test of time so well. Their tap selection is what I really get disappointed at. At one time I thought it was amazing, but it's been nearly the same since 2006. They have a couple of rotaters, but not that adventuresome.
The atmosphere of the place is still excellent and the service staff is still wonderful. So, I'm just dropping one star. I still love going here and I still love sitting on the patio with some friends...but the beer and food menu is boring now and I wish they'd revamp with the times a bit.Listed in: Dallas Favorites, East Dallas Rocks On, Let's have a pint!

I have only been to Dallas twice and I have a lot to yet explore but this place is the bees knees! I love the darkness of this bar. Draught beer selection is decent and french fries were good.
I plan to go back to The Old Monk whenever I have to visit Dallas again.

I've been to the Old Monk several times and each time it makes me wonder why i don't go there more. A fantastic selection of beer awaits your tastes buds! If youre not into that a full service bar will help out.
The staff here is always friendly and fast. The crowd seems to be anyone coming from the office or someone who just got out of bed. I've always like this place for crowd watching because it offers such a diverse crowd. Around midnight it does seem to become standing room only, but if you you come to a bar like this you should expect that.
Outside area is awesome for viewing people coming in from the streets, or to have a smoke, no smoking inside. I think this is a place that eveyone can enjoy. -
Review from Paul E.
I can't believe I've never reviewed the Old Monk....
It's another of Feargal McKinney's bars, and you can tell. Dark woods, pub feel, good pub food (burgers and fish and chips are both highly recommended), and a good selection of foreign and domestic craft beers are all de rigeur.
This place, more than the Idle or Friar, tends to have a busy happy hour during the week... which brings me to the reason it's only 4 stars - and it's not really THEIR fault, just something that detracts from the experience.
Parking. The lot? Is tiny. The streets nearby? Have those oh-so-annoying "Parking for Residents Only" signs. (On that topic - what is it with people - you want to live in the city? Then you put up with the PITA that is parking in the city. If you want guaranteed parking, go F****NG live in Plano, please. Ahem)
Yes, the inability to find good parking most days is why (a) I'm not here more often and (b) only 4 stars. -

I'm absolutely in love with the Old Monk. They have a huge beer list, a nice big selection of beers on tap, and lots of great yummy mixed drinks. The food is fantastic, I crave the fries with their yummy dipping sauces and the sliders are big enough to share with your favorite friend.
I've had wonderful times at the Old Monk, snuggling with my man on a cold night or out on the patio laughing on a great spring afternoon. It's one of the best bars in Dallas. Boooooyah! I said it.
Ya know, as much as I love the Old Monk, I gotta say a lot of other people do too. It's hard to park there, hard to find a place to sit sometimes, just overall can be a pain in the butt. But don't let these little flaws detract you from going. The place is special. -

Old Monk is absolutely a 5 for me. I'm pretty sure that anyone who lives in Dallas and frequents the Monk feels like it's a home away from home. I think that's actually one person's whole review.
It has the same great beer variety as Idle or Black Friar, but a completely different crowd. If you need a suggestion, ask your server, but if you just close you eyes and point, there's a 99% chance you'll like what you get.
Check out the summer beer, black widow, or extensive whiskey list when your Maredsous-filled belly has had enough ale.
The cheese plate here is surprisingly tasty and has quite a variety to choose from. Somethin you'd typically see in a wine bar.
Like Black Friar, they also boast some of the best cheese fries in town, in my humble opinion. If you aren't into steak cut fries smothered in cheese, bacon, and jalapenos, the skinny frites come with a trio of dipping sauces. The fish and chips aren't too shabby either.
If you're coming for brunch, be prepared that you aren't getting the best drink specials in Dallas. The $14 bottomless Mimosa is probably the cheapest route. Bloodys will run you $4-5. But they do have good breakfast tacos and you can't go wrong with the traditional breakfast.
It's just a feel good bar. I always have a great time here. -
Review from Kyle A.
We love this place. Great selection of Belgian and other European beers. Awesome choice of Scotch and Irish whiskeys.
Almost always happy with the food. Good burger, great french dip. Respectable reuben (even if it is pastrami instead of corned beef), and a decent turkey club (the avocado is a little too much for it). The tarragon mayo for the frite appetizer is divine. Fish and chips are the best in the world. I can comfortably say that having eaten it all over the British Isles. A vegetarian friend endorses the veggie sandwich. Absolutely love the bread pudding with whiskey sauce. We think it's one of the four best desserts in Dallas.
Avoid the calamari or fried mushrooms- they are fried with the same batter as the fish and it's too thick for the purpose. Not inedible, but there are better things on the menu. My other half doesn't care for the pistachio crusted chicken- he thinks it's dry. I don't have a problem with it.
The atmosphere is perfect- dark, somewhat brooding. If I were an alcoholic Irish poet, I'd definitely spend a good portion of my time here drinking myself to death. The crowd ranges from tattooed hipsters to empty-headed sorority girls, but all in all the douche factor is usually below critical density (it gets close on Saturday evenings though). There are of course unfathomable sports playing on useless televisions, but the sound is usually low enough to be inoffensive. Also, the music is great if you like indie / alternative rock. I've heard the Smiths, Joy Division, Shins, Interpol, Bowie and others of that ilk.
One warning. Do NOT order a Moscow Mule here. While they have the requisite copper mugs, everything else about their approach to this drink is completely wrong. They use ginger ale instead of ginger beer-BIG difference. Plus, there is not nearly enough lime to balance the overbearing sweetness of the ginger ale.
All in all, a great place for drinks, food, and hanging out.Listed in: Bars We Like (and hate), The Burger List, Publife

Was lucky enough to find this place for New Year's Eve. No cover, we were able to find a seat, great selection and great service. The Draft selection could definitely use some improvement to be great, but it was still very good. The bottle selection was also very good and the menu looked great but we unfortunately missed the kitchen closing. Service was very good and the crowd was just right. Found a parking spot as well which was a bonus. Definitely worth a stop and depending on the night could be the only stop you need.

Great loca pub/bar in the Knox Henderson area. Been Coming for years even though i wouldnt consider my self a pubite but i do have some real drinkers who prefer this location.
They have a wide selection of beer and especially the Belgian varieties like Maredsous which is around 9% alcohol by volume which i make sure to steer clear from and also a bunch of ciders which i my faves.
This particular evening i had one of their special drinks which was called a Red Cider which consisted of Sangria and Cider combined. It had an interesting state but was sweet nonetheless. For Dinner i ordered the Basil Brueder Burger which consisted of Basil and some unique cheese slices and was a mouthful. I ordered carmelized onions on my also. The fries were great but even taste better with vinegar on top . I topped the food with a Draft ace pear cider which got me ready enough to call it a night. -

I already have a deep love for this place as it is, since it's a minute away from my apartment. However, I write this review in light of the crap robberies that happened recently in that area, and which chose Old Monk as one of their victims.
Poor, Monk. I hope you're doing well. I haven't been in to see you as of late, but I hear your security has been amped up and you're just as thriving as ever.

This place is a great beer bar. They have many good beers on tap as well as a rotating selection. They also have a pretty good sized menu of bottled beers. I went on a Saturday night and it was busy but not too crowded to get service at the bar. All of the bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable of their beer list. I did not have an opportunity to try any of the specialty cocktails, but the people next to me at the bar had a couple different ones and seemed to enjoy them. I would go back here the next time I visit the area.

This place is yet another that I credit with having that Revolutionary-era tavern/pub feel. I really enjoy the patio out front, because it faces Henderson, which makes for some awesome people-watching! The inside is pretty nice too, except I don't care for how dark it is. When you're eating food, it's kind of hard to see sometimes!
Beer selection here is fantastic...they have a large selection on draft and in bottle. Of course, I am a fan if you serve Lindeman's Framboise on tap, which The Old Monk does! Be sure to check out their combinations menu also!
The other thing that makes this place shine is the food. Some of the BEST bar fries ever are found here. They are thin and crispy, seasoned and salted just right and served with three different types of mayo! My personal favorite thing here is the cheese board. Gruyere, Stilton, and Manchego are my usual choices, and they are served generously with fruit, crackers, toast, and a variety of other goodies. Nice presentation, too!
Now that I work down the street, I will be frequenting this place more often!Listed in: Bars with the Best Food!

Old Monk has both outdoor seating and indoor seating. Even on a chilly autumn evening, there's no trouble sitting outside because there are heating lamps. In fact, after sitting in close proximity to a heating lamp for quite some time, I was getting so warm that I had to move away. Indoor seating is good too. The music is not loud, so this is a great place for bigger group to congregate. They have a good number of beers on tap -- a key feature for any bar. The Brooklyn Lager and Stone IPA were delicious. There are also a few unique draft beers that rotate. I would love to, and can't wait, to go back!

Fantastic place to grab a bite and a beer.
Depending on when you go the parking can be a bit painful, though I usually don't have a problem with it (surprising for how small the lot is). Pretty good selection of beers in just about any style you want. And I dare say the food is just as good. Two favorites of mine: veggie burger and calamari (not together!). Can't go wrong with these (veggie burger is a lot better with cheese on it).
I love the outdoor seating in front. I understand the bars/pubs are a little dark, but I think it's a little too dark inside (and sometimes too loud for my taste). But I've still definitely enjoyed some good times inside.
I really dig this place, and have usually had great service. Today there was a little mishap that is probably no big deal, but through me off a little.
At any rate: Old Monk is killer spot. -

Alright, Old Monk, you did me right on Monday night, so up one star you go. Our waitress was super bubbly and helpful, and greeted me right away. The place was mostly empty and parking was a breeze, so I'm declaring Mondays and Tuesdays as the best night to go for happy hour.
The beer was perfectly poured and the quiet crowd made for a great meeting spot. I noticed several patrons with their laptops out, assuring me that they have free wi-fi. What's better than working with a beer?
Nothing. Especially when you have a case of the Mondays.Listed in: Knox/Henderson Locales, It's the Hour de Happy!

I love the Old Monk. I think I love the Old Monk because I've only ever gone with people that I love. BFFs, Sister, old high school friends.
Other things I love about the Old Monk:
1. Homemade lentil veggie burger
2. Cute decorations for holidays
3. It's so quaint I feel like Gaston's song from Beauty and the Beast could have been filmed here.
4. The lighting is romantic/hides things I don't want people to see, like my face
5. Friendly, knowledgeable staff
6. Indoor/Outdoor option
7. Own parking lot which I've parked in every time. The luck comes from being Irish.
8. Lots of beers
The only gripe?
1. (the loneliest number) It's kind of small for big group gatheringsListed in: ROTDs!!!!

Does The Old Monk really need another review? Probably not. But here are some highlights anyway.
Patio: Sunshine outside, shade and twinkly lights inside. Gets busy, get there early.
Food: Everything is good. Seriously. Fish & Chips, with sea salted fries and homemade tartar sauce with capers, will rock your face off.
Drinks: Looking for beer? You found it. They also have liquor. Take that, Flying Saucer.
Service: I've never had anything but great service, but I can see how it might lag on busy nights. Did I mention that this place gets busy at night?
Prices: Reasonable. Not dive cheap but not overinflated uptown either. Just right.
Parking: Show me a place in Dallas with abundant free parking and I'll show you a dead business. You could always valet at Victor Tango's and walk down. After having a Victor Tango, of course.
Bottom line: One of the best pubs in town.Listed in: Got booze?, Brunch - It's Breakfast with…, Henderson Ave.

I am such a fan of this place. The location is nice for me being right down the road, the beer selection is ridiculous, the owner is actually Irish, the food is tasty, and the servers are on point.
It had been years since I stepped foot inside this place before revisiting it a couple weeks ago. Sure, I've been there dozens of times and I guess I forgot how good my buddy was to me.
You definitely want to go early. The clientele and mood of the joint DRASTICALLY changes come sun down. It's perfect for lunch or an after work brew. The crowd is super chill, and you occasionally see kids sitting outside with their papa and mams. (Not many though, and leave the wild ones at home.) Stay late into the night and you will probably run into those popped collars that we love to hate.
As I mentioned before the brews menu is one of the best in the city offering all Chimays (God bless 'em), Franconi Hefe (McKinney represent!), Black Velvets, and about 1000 other drinks/beers I want to pour on my pallet.
I am interested in checking them out for brunch as their offerings include $14 bottomless Mimosas, $3 Red Stellas (holy sheeeet), $3 Marys, and $3 Greyhounds (vodka and jugo de grapefruit). The grub sounds gnarly too. Biscuits and gravy? Yes please.
P.S. If you go to their website you can see an article I wrote about them YEARS ago. I'm famous! -

A decent pub experience, but not the best in Dallas. If you're in the Knox-Henderson area, definitely stop by. They have a great beer and cider seletion, and the menu's not too shabby.
It's a little dark and loud inside, but if you sit on the patio (and the weather's nice), it's a great place to catch up with friends.
I've gotten some really nice waitresses before and some pretty rude ones, so the service is hit or miss. -

Dallas, TX
The Old Monk is a great pub with the typical dark interiors. Parking is the only negative about this place. If it's a busy day at the Old Monk their tiny parking lot fills up fast.
My favorite drink here is the chocolate truffle, which is Young's Double Chocolate Stout blended with a splash or two of Lindemans Framboise. It's so good. If that's not your thing they have an extensive beer list from the Belgium beers to the good ol US of A.
Don't stop with just drinks. The food here is delicious. The roast beef sandwich is one of my favorite dishes. It's piled with hot roast beef and horseradish. On my last visit I tried the goat cheese and tomato salad. It was huge, fresh and tasty.
If the weather is cooperating grab a table on the patio out front. It's a great place to be to people watch!
