Review from Diana L.
I've been here many times; I've been going for years. I have never been disappointed. I always know that I will get a generous portion of hearty food. Plus, the restaurant is an old house, so you feel right at home.
The portions are enormous; a schnitzel takes up the length of a plate. It is never overdone, and it can be dressed with an array of delectable toppings, such as in an Oscar fashion, which is hollandaise and crab meat, or Rockefeller, which is melted cheese, an oyster, and spinach. However, my personal favourite is the Madagascar: green peppercorns and mushrooms in a brown gravy. The plates are always served with a side of red cabbage, steamed veggies, and roasted potatoes. If I'm feeling adventurous, I like to add some spatzal to my plate: a German noodle that is boiled then fried.
I have a special place in my heart for this restaurant. I really enjoy it when I go with my family and friends. I would argue that it is the best German restaurant in town. If anyone can prove me wrong, please do so! I love me some good German food.Listed in: Fine dine with out the…

Walking into this place feels a bit like you've stumbled into an elderly European woman's home by accident. It would only be kitschy if it were intentionally funny - instead it makes me feel a little weird inside...keep thinking I need to take off my shoes or something...but the food makes up for the strange ambiance, to be sure.
The Combo Dinner is incredible- for just over $20 you get a generous serving of bratwurst, schnitzel and rouladen (my absolute favourite) with spaetzle, steamed veggies and perfectly braised cabbage. You can't go wrong.
Great service by people who live and breathe European food - they know their stuff, trust their recommendations.
The downside for us is that we're rarely in New West, and the restaurant is a pretty big hike up from the Skytrain. I swear, if the Deutsches Haus in East Van ever started pumping out food this good I would NEVER leave!Listed in: Ich habe hunger!

The ultimate comfort food destination. It's a real gem in the New Westminster foodscape...heck, I would say it's one of the top 3 German/Eastern European restaurants in Greater Vancouver.
Food is copious, calorie-laden, delicious, and the real deal. If you don't look outside at Columbia Street, you can easily pretend you're at a Frankfurt pub. -

Very classic, old school German like decor and setting. It is a great little place that serves great food. This restaurant is always busy so I recommend a reservation...
There is a very wide selection of offerings on the menu... The schnitzel is absolutely awesome though. so crispy and tender too. Before the meal they serve you complimentary garlic bread which is so tasty and perfectly done!
Service is great. Very cheerful and helpful. I will be back many more times. -

My family has been going to the Old Bavaria Haus for years - we love their variety of schnitzels. My favourite is the Schnitzel Pacific which comes topped with shrimp and sauce, and comes with spatzle and seasonal veggies. The restaurant is also famous for Schnitzel Wednesdays, when you can get any variety for $10 (normally $15 - $20).
The Bavaria Haus is impossible to miss, as it is located in a German-to-the-max house on 6th Street - we're talking the peaked brown roof with gingerbread trim, and bucolic scenes of Germany painted on the stucco. Inside is cozy - it feels like you're eating in someone's dining room, and there's a nice party space upstairs, too.
Although the service I have always felt has been quite good, I do feel I have to take off one star for a recent disappointing experience at the Haus. My friends and I decided to stop in for dessert and coffee one night. It was about an hour before closing time, and we asked our server if it was "all right" if we just had dessert.
Well, he said it was, but by his actions it would seem that it was not. Each time he came to the table, he fairly slammed the dishes down. It was very noticeable that he resented being taken away from some staff gathering going on in the other room. Passive-aggressively, our server let us know our presence was not appreciated.
I still loves my schnitzel - but that incident definitely put a damper on my enthusiasm for this restaurant.Listed in: Bright Lights, Royal City

My husband and I went for dinner here the other night, and we both thought the food was fabulous. I'm not normally a meat-and-potatoes kind of gal, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself nonetheless. I had the schnitzel cordon bleu champignon, and I would certainly order it again the next time I go back. My husband comes from a German background, and he said that the food reminded him of what his mom used to cook growing up.
Also, they have German beer on tap for a reasonable price, and I was suprised at the inexpensive prices on their wine list as well.
Another nice suprise was that they had an extensive vegetarian menu -not what one would typically expect from a German restaurant! I liked the ambiance of the restaurant, and our server was very nice. No complaints here! -

I went here a few months back with my friend who was here from Germany. I've only had schnitzel in Germany so I have have expectations, and obviously so did she.
I had wierner schnitzel which was delightful. My friend took some of mine and she cooed "oh, its just like home!" She had the cordon-blue schnitzel which was also very nice. We both had dessert, I had chocolate mousse which was one of the nicest I have had; she had the black forest cake which usually I don't like much but it was really good as well.
Service was very courteous, quick, and the server was really helpful.
Thinking about it now, I think I need to go for some schnitzel again soon! -

Before you come here and look at any photos, close your eyes and imagine in your mind the utter most stereotypical image of a German house.
Got it?
Perfect you now know what The Old Bavaria Haus looks like, you won't miss it when you look for it.
I enjoy the fact they're in New West where many fail to venture unless they are prodded or the restaurant comes highly recommended. This place is definitely great but probably isn't the first to mind for many.
Let's keep it that way. It gets a solid amount of traffic as it is and has been around for years, no need to blow it up with the latest fad eaters.
Schnitzel is the thing to get here as mentioned by Christine and I too share a love for the Pacific Schnitzel. It's just such a well balanced plate and delicious to boot.
I've always had a great time at this restaurant and have found the service attentive even when the restaurant is fully packed.
Parking in this area can be a bit of a pain sometimes. -

Let's start with the decor of the restaurant. You'll feel like you're inside someone's house! It felt so strange for a restaurant, and it was like someone decided to turn their house to a restaurant in a hour. The service is good, the food is decent. Their specialty is schnitzel but I find it was just average tasting schnitzel. After eating at this restaurant, I became extremely thirsty and I almost developed a reaction to the food which I ate at this place. It wasn't diarrhea or even upset stomach, but I became very very thirsty and a bit dizzy. This thirsty feeling was experienced first in my life after eating at a restaurant. Be warned, eat at your own risk at this place if you have unknown allergies.
