I bicycled across town on a very hot day to have one of their well-reputed veggie burgers. I had to ask if it was vegan, and the cook said it was. I hope he was right, because one of the best things about it was the creamy avocado dressing - the kind of creamy you can't normally get without mayo - or "nayo," which very few restaurants stock. So how was it? Very tasty, but mostly because of the fixings. The patty, like the burger itself, was small. It tasted okay but without adding much to the flavour - or was it the source of a vaguely curry-like flavour? So, a kind of subtle patty, if you will. For $4 or $5, this would have been a very good deal. For $7 (all their prices include taxes), not so much.
The regular size fries, on the other hand, were abundant for $3. But they got boring pretty fast (they come unsalted, which is good; I salted and shook them in the bag). Despite being as soft as could be, I was surprised by a slightly raw potato taste in one or two of the fries, though not enough to spoil the flavour. As someone else has pointed out, they weren't much for crispness and kind of weighed themselves down into a rather soggy mass. I brought most of them home as leftovers and will refry them. -

I've grown up watching different businesses come and go in this location. Ice cream, Pazsteaks and now North Star. While I realize the challenges of this location and how well North Star is doing, I simply never come here.
Why? Price.
The staff are friendly and the veggie burgers are amazing (top 3 quality and made in store). But their prices are the only thing out to lunch when you come here. Otherwise, 10 bucks later and you are still hungry.
If they're gonna set up in Winnipeg (North end no less) and play the local card, the least they can do is try to keep prices down.
I'd buy stock in this place, but there's no way I can afford to eat here. -

I was excited to try the North Star Drive-In because I love burgers and heard great things about this place. Like most burger places in the city, you order your meal to go or you can stay and eat your meal at one of the few picnic tables nearby. This place definitely has one of the cuter exteriors, it's painted in a dark blue and looks fairly new and clean.
They serve the usual assortment of burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, hard and soft serve ice cream, and fries. But they also offer some things that other places don't - blue cheese burger, curry mayo dipping sauce and even a veggie burger! Though their prices are a tad higher than competing burger places.
I went with my usual order - cheeseburger, fries and a can of pop. North Star has a combo for this and it came to $8.25 tax included. First off, the cheeseburger was a decent size but I noticed how hard and crispy the patty was. First bite...yup, it was hard and dry. Unfortunately, the patty here was not juicy and had no flavour! The rest of the burger included red onions, pickles, cheese and a special sauce. The special sauce didn't do it for me - it tasted like the big mac thousand island concoction. The sauce was too tangy and overpowered everything. Next came the massive bag of fries. I was very much turned off by the very dark color and the sogginess of the fries. The fries tasted mushy and it seemed like the fries were cooked in old oil, hence the dark color. This is how much I disliked the fries here - I threw out the entire bag after eating only a few fries. I hate wasting food but I just couldn't make myself eat bad fries. I really felt guilty for throwing it out but it had to be done.
The chocolate milkshake ($4.50 one size only) was rich and creamy but the chocolate had a slight gritty taste to it. Okay shake but not great.
I wanted to like this place so much but I was so disappointed with the burger and fries. If I were to come back here, I'd probably get the veggie burger since so many people rave about that item.
This place is cash only! Staff are pretty nice here. There's parking on the side for about 5 cars and 2 picnic tables on the right side.
