Just like Simon K has expressed, I also think this is my favorite Donnelly Group pub.  All locations have the same boring menu and food is always mediocre.  However, when I stepped foot into The New Oxford, I had a good feeling.  The place looked extra clean and as I was walking towards the bar, I was greeted with smiles by 2 different servers.

As I ordered my typical vodka tonic, the bartender told me that they had doubles on specials.  Drink specials on a Saturday and the special was 'doubles'?  I like!  We ordered our drinks along with truffle fries to share.  The fries were cooked perfectly.  I love fries that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  The truffle was really strong as well and it hit the spot.  It was the perfect snack and pre-drink before our dinner reservations at another restaurant.

I like this spot.  Lots of beer on tap, decent selection of cocktails, the game is on TV and the service is good.  It's a donnelly group pub, which is a point against, but it doesn't feel as samey as a lot of the other ones do.    It's loud inside and a little bit cramped but all in all it's a fun place to hang out.

Plus, they have a Chicken and Waffle Sandwhich.  Yeah, you read that right.  And it's amazing.

Out of the Donnelly Group of locations, this one is probably my favorite of the bunch. I have come here a few times, at lunch, and also in the night, and this one has that good 'vibe'. You go in, after passing the atm machine and you see this brick wall from the front, all the way to the back. You also see this every protruding bar that goes from the front to the back of the place (well, not all the way to the back... but it's long). The ends of the bar are a little wider, so you have seating on the front, the ends, and the backside, so there are times you see the bartenders or waitresses coming through to get their next batch of drinks to distribute amongst the crowd.

The nights in here get busy, it is noisy, with tv's going off, and people sitting and enjoying their drinks with food. If you want more action, and more things and people to look at, go sit at the bar, think of it as a big communal table. On certain nights they have drink specials, it's just what night are you at. For Yaletown, this is just another drinking establishment, yet it is a Donnelly's one, and the one that 'to myself' feels the best of the bunch.

The lunch specials here are pretty decent in size and price, and in the summers they play soccer matches on the tv. It's supposed to represent a soccer style bar, and does a good job at that. The night was packed, and the drinks took a while to get to us, but that is how it goes when you have a happening place, you may have to wait a little, but it will eventually show up. A good place to chill in Yaletown, especially if your looking for a place showing the game.

Came here because my friend wanted to come here.

My friend made a reservation... the place was busy for a weekday night. Since she had made a reservation, we were seated right away. Table in the very far back please. Up front, it's kinda dark and romantic--- like where you would take your mistress even though there's a huge window. In the back, it's lit up fairly well so that I can take in the decor.

We sat down and I immediately started gawking at the table beside us because of their food. They have a chicken and waffle sandwich! And it was big. Since they are a Donnelly establishment, they have the little postcards on the table telling you the specials. The special of the night was steak frites, but I had my eye on the prize. They have a Rueben sandwich. Me loves me a Rueben.

My two girlfriends order the burger (boring). Comes with fries. Meh. I opted to get my sandwich with a salad. Regular ol' garden salad. It's actually quite good, but I came here for meat. I take one bite of my crispy sandwich and I want to cry. Seriously... tears welling up... there is too much horseradish mustard in my sandwich. De-rection... I could barely eat it, but I made the most of it... I just ate the pastrami and scraped off the over zealous smattering of mustard.

Maybe I am just a wimp or maybe the chef was just extra generous that day. Either way, gonna get the chicken and waffles (if they still have it).

Our server was very friendly and came back to check on us numerous times. Why didn't I tell her about my sandwich you ask? It's not like I couldn't eat it...

I work next door, so New Oxford is a common spot for after work gatherings or an occasional lunch.

It's a fun atmosphere. A good mix of folks -- all ages, and not just your typical Yaletown crowd. Service is usually friendly and good, but they get busy fast at night and it can get slow/sloppy at times. A few of the servers are excellent, however. Great $9.50 lunch menu options, as well as their full menu. Overall, good prices and drinks are great as well. They also have a daily price special that's pretty outstanding. Burger and a beer for $11? Happy hour pound of wings and a beer for $6!? Why aren't you there already?

Items I've tried so far and liked:

    parsley truffle fries
    pork sliders
    poutine
    chicken wings
    organic peppered chicken salad

Item I've tried so far and didn't care for:
BLTA sandwich. It was ok. Just ok. It was missing the avocado. More like barely a green smear.

Overall, great spot to hang out after work for a couple of appys and drinks.

Started visiting this establishment after BC Lions home games last season. It was away from the chaos so an easy choice.

Good selection of beer on tap and I really liked one food item, the BLTA. This is a usual diner standard but it was executed at the highest degree. it was one of the few sandwiches in my life where I didn't argue about toppings!

The service can vary dramatically. Perhaps I have always gotten lucky? if I was visiting for the first time I would sit at the bar close to a bartender to ensure prompt service. Apparently, this location is a major night spot on some evenings so expect delays/nonsense.

Why oh why are there so many Donnelly Group pubs around here?  So vanilla and cookie cutter.  The food menu is atrocious and it is exactly the same at each location.  If you are in the mood for uninspired food straight from the Sysco truck to your table, then stop on by.

The New Oxford made one of the most complicated Groupons I have ever seen.  They broke the days down to Sun-Thu & Fri & Sat.  They broke the number of people required down to less than 3 people and more than 3 people.  They had multiple price levels.  They even required a food purchase.  Man was I foolish to buy one of these.  I got there on the right group of days and the right number of people in my party and ordered my below average food item.  The nachos were even bad by pub standards.  Apparently the Groupon is not good for specials either so my bill was actually higher than if I used the Groupon.  It would have costed me another 17 bucks to use my Groupon?  My Groupon was for a $15 for $30 so I would have been a loser to use it... nope I was a loser to come to this place.  To make it worse, the manager poured gasoline on the fire and was very condescending.

I am officially boycotting all of the Donnelly Group pubs.  I won't even stop by for a beer at this point.  I hope you do the same and support a small non-chain local business that appreciates your business.

I've been here a few times and I still don't know what to make of it - in a word, it's 'inconsistent'.

Like most people here, I've not a fan of Donnelly (DHM) operations - it's cookie-cutter, plastic and uninspired.  Been to one DHM bar and you've been to them all.

However, they did reach a turning point with me with one of the Elite parties earlier this year (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...).  It wasn't just the free booze - service was spooky good.

So I gave them a chance - the location is pretty good as it's pretty central to the places I normally go when I'm downtown.  When I dropped by to grab a few beers by the bar - bartender was attentive and beer selection fit me well - they have Unibroue by the bottle.  Yum.  And to boot, they were playing Casino on the bar TVs - very nice.  From that visit only, 4 stars.

On my last visit, it was more a hard liquor night.  It was a busy weekend night, so the bar was full - so we grabbed a table.  For the first couple of rounds, waitress was quick and kept up with our pace.  However, when it came time to settle the bill - it took us about 15 minutes before we got her attention.  I'm usually extremely easy-going (even moreso when I've been drinking) but it was another long wait for our bill.  I got impatient, marched up to the bar and asked again for my bill -- which was promptly delivered with a long string of apologies.

Okay - not a big deal, I suppose - and I was pleasantly surprised that our top-shelf scotch was only $6 a shot (usually pay around $7 - $8).  But with so-so service in a bar that I feel a little guilty patronizing - 2-stars on that visit.

Anyways - going to nerd it up and equalize with a 3-star.  The good: location, relatively cheap drinks, less douchey than other DHM bars, reasonable noise level and good beer selection.  The bad: service is hit-and-miss and it's a DHM bar.

Maybe I'm just a hater - DHM is clearly doing something right - their bars are usually packed and they are springing up everywhere.  But it's like watching reality TV or listening to LMFAO - even when you're enjoying it, you kinda hate yourself.

The place is nice and definitely has that old London pub feel going on. While the place itself is dimly lit, husband and I were lucky enough to catch a spot under giant lamp. We're still pretty confused about the bicycles hanging from the ceiling. I know they're certainly old-school looking, but it just seemed strange to have them there for show.

The food was alright, but nothing amazing. The alcohol selection looked quite extensive; the wine list was plenty. The service was nice (we arrived around 6pm on a Friday), but we could tell the place started getting packed and they were slowly trying to scoop us out. They cleared away our extra chairs and talked openly in front of us amongst each other that there were already people waiting for the table.

We wanted to get out of there sooner, but the bill came out incorrectly. So we had to send it back and wait a bit longer. Overall, it's an okay place, but it's probably not on my top few choices for a pub after work.

For its location and the atmosphere, I would give this place 4 stars. Overall, it really only is a 3 star. I know, I'm a regular here, and the Donnelly group sure knows how to have their customers coming back.
Daily specials for food and drink, and they also have a good selection of beers on tap, including Kronenbourg Blanc!!

Wings Wednesdays at $5 a pound, with your choice of a dry rub BBQ, Thai, Hot, or salt & pepper. The wings are small, but they give you the full pound and it's a good deal. I like the hot wings best. Gold Lager is at $4 a pint, and their contemporary cocktails are $6.50 on Wednesdays. I'm liking the whole revamp of the Donnelly Group's cocktail list-adding more hand crafted cocktails to the mix. I had two cocktails: The Burdock Float - Spicebox Canadian whiskey, Gibson Canadian whiskey, fernet branca, egg white, simple syrup, Fentimans dandelion & burdock. Yummy! It tasted just like root beer! The second one was a Honeysuckle - Ketel One vodka, honey syrup, giffard apricot syrup, sprig rosemary, fresh lemon. So refreshing!

In terms of other food, I've only had their crispy Indonesian chili squid with dry roasted chilis, onion, cilantro, mint, fresh lime. It's surprisingly good.

One thing that bugs me about this place is their service. I've never had good service here. I'm not sure if it's the layout of the place (a long narrow space), but it's always hard to flag someone down. Water/ pop refills need to be requested, and it's just overall slow. We also got overcharged on our bill the past Wednesday we went, which only lengthened the time that we had to stay there.

I enjoyed The New Oxford more then any of the other typical Donnelly pubs.

I got the BLTA sandwich without the bacon with yam fries and everything was really good! They didn`t even make a stink about putting the bacon on someone else`s order rather then us just ordering it on the side. Drinks are typical, overpriced as usual.

The decor is quite interesting, i like the low chairs and table and brick walls but was a little thrown off by the boat that was mounted to the ceiling above my head!

The service started off good but then a big reservation came in and it became a bit of a game of cat and mouse to get the cheque, we coulda easily walked out with noone noticing which is so often the case with Donnelly pubs.

This is a decent place for drinks in Yaletown, a decent alternative to the expensive hotel lounges and bars in the neighbourhood. The food is atrocious, but there is a good selection of local beers on tap. A large group of us went on a busy Friday night, sat at the back which was actually quite comfortable - but service was hit and miss.

I've been on the fence about Donnelly groups places. However I have been to the New Oxford a couple of time now and figured that I will not judge them based on ownership but as unique establishments that happen to have the same menu ;)

The first time we went for a sunday lunch with family friends, service was slow and the place wasn't even packed.

Food was alright had the cajun chicken sandwich. We liked that it was kid friendly as our friends brought their baby.

Most recently, we went last night for cask night. On tap was a Mission Springs Espresson Stout which was to die for. So smooth and paired wonderfully with the chocolate brownie for dessert.

As for the food, wings were good, fish and chips overdone.

Service was mediocre and slow most of the time yet when my dining companion spilled his entire beer on my lap the server was kind enough to replace his beer. Even I think I deserved the free beer!

Since cask night is a regular thing here we may be back strictly for that purpose.

Also I will admit that the Donnelly group certainly has created a great atmosphere with this decor.

Cute and ever-so-slightly hipster interior decor (old movies & oscar wilde poster), nice selection of drinks and a fairly central location!

Oh...but wait, you're in Yaletown! So of course the music is blaring so loudly you can't even hear yourself think, let alone what you're friends are saying.

What's the point of going to a bar where you have to shout ad scream at each other? This isn't a club, is it?

Didn't eat here, just beers and cocktails.  The decor and ambiance were nice and the service seemed good as well.  It does still have the Donnelly Group corporate feel though.  I also can't say that this is "the place" for a beer as I was there when the taps were all taken over by Deschutes Brewery (it was the 1 year anniversary of the New Oxford) which I wish they had on tap everyday.

Honestly, the BEST nachos on the planet. The only thing that's a challenge is the service. Training on "how to serve big groups" is required. Definitely recommend.

Came here for lunch one day: slow service (even though the place was empty), they ran out of the beer my friend ordered, portions for their lunch special were underwhelming along with the taste of the food.

Only redeeming quality was that the wine by the glass special was decent at a good price.

    Won't be back for lunch.

This will have to be my last Donnelly Group experience.  When we walked in the bartender greeted us with "Let's get wasted"!   At 4:00 in the afternoon? I don't think so, pal.

    The good:
    1)  Attentive server
    2)  Comfortable seating

    The bad:
    1)  Draught selection was disappointing compared to my Vancouver favourites (Black Frog, The Whip...)
    2)  The bartender (see above)
    3)  Sterile atmosphere (yes, it was a Saturday afternoon, but why not rope off the back of the room and try to create some atmosphere? There were enough customers for that to have helped things)
    4)  No character, nothing to distinguish this pub from any one of a hundred pubs elsewhere

Lesson learned for me.  From now on, I stick to independently-owned drinking spots.

I'm going to forget for a moment that this is a Donnelly Group Pub. I'm also going to try to forget the less than stellar experiences I have had at their other establishments. With that aside, I can say that the New Oxford is a clean, chill, and reasonably priced place for a drink!

I went in with a group of around eight on a Sunday night after a hockey game. We wanted a chill, relatively quiet place for a drink. In a place like Yaletown, where most establishments are food primary and don't always look kindly on a group of eight just having drinks, the New Oxford was a kind respite.  Great service, okay drinks, and a good atmosphere.  None of us had food, but for a simple glass of wine or cold beer, I recommend it.

I walked in here and I felt like it was still the tragedy that was Shakin' Not Stirred. I wanted to walk out as soon as I got here, but my party just wanted to get a drink. You would think you would at least try to redesign the layout of a bar that went under.

I had also heard that there were tasty microbrews to be found, but while they had some on tap, they certainly very interesting ones. I tried to get a bottled beer from California only to find they were all out. In the end, I just ordered a cocktail.

The bar staff cheered us on to get wasted. It was mid-afternoon and they totally misread us. We were just there for a drink. Maybe you to be some sort of Yaletown socialite to think this place is good.

I eat out a lot, I know. And we're a very lucky that we live and eat in a city that has a plethora of great restaurants.

Now chain restaurants can be hit or miss, I will tend to avoid the Milestones, Cactus Club or Earls - there really is no reason to ever go there. Same can be said about Glowbal, although I have recently found myself at Glowbal and had a great experience. We have such amazing independent restaurants that I'd rather support them than a chain mass producing underwhelming food at a ridiculous price.

Donnelly Group, you have just been added to that list. Sure, your lunch specials were fine and the food was okay, but what really nailed your coffin was the $3 charge on your ATM. I get you are cash or charge only, although there is very little notice on entering the restaurant. I find it a pain, but I can generally live with it - apart from the fact that on top of your ridiculous ATM charge are my bank fees,  it just cost me an additional $4.50 to eat my lunch. Granted part of that is my fault, as I was carrying no cash, but really in this day and age, it's not unreasonable to presume a restaurant will take debit. Shame on you for your blatant cash cow stance.

You have now lost my business.

Thanks for the authentic British pub feel, complete with British pub prices.

I haven't been to this location since it changed from the Soho and now I'm regretting that - the New Oxford is a great new find in Yaletown in my opinion.  I love what they have done with the decor and atmosphere - love the booth seats and the dark wood walls, and of course the 'decorative' book shelves and random photos!
The cocktail menu is pretty great, and the drinks were plentiful.  Great wine and beer selections.  Only sampled some of the food, which was good and arrived quiet quickly.  The service was also great - friendly and attentive.  All in all a great place for a couple of friends to chat over drinks.

    Where's the damn sixth star???

Ok, full confession, I have been excited about this place for a while and I was caught more than once sneaking in past the contractors to see how it was progressing.

It soft opened on Saturday--if a room jam packed with friends, bar industry regulars and familiar Yaletown faces could ever count as a "soft" opening and I have been in The Ox (as it's already being called) every day since.

The Donnelly Group has made a real commitment to doing something different with this room and the English-style decor with stuff animals, dark wood panelling and large photos of Oxford grads. They are not only offering a much more interesting selection of craft beers than they do at other venues, but the menu is different from the standard issue at other Donnelly Public Houses as this will be the testbed for menu development. I've had the Short Rib Dip, Blackened Chicken and Pastrami Sandwiches so far and they've all been exception.

Niggles? They need to add more men's restroom space, but that's underway and I'd enjoy a pub game other than shuffleboard but that's about it. I've had to drag myself away from the great times each time I've been in there, and isn't that what we're all looking for from our "local"?

    Did I mention it's a block from my apartment? . . .

Definitely be sure to try the 8 1/2 cocktail. It sounds a little odd with the ingredients, but it's delightful! Vodka, pink grapefruit juice, and Stella all swirl together to created a little piece of heaven in your mouth. Drinks are quite strong and I enjoyed their method of pouring wine. First in to a metal cup and then in to your glass. Equal amounts each time to ensure you're getting what you paid for. The cocktail list features many bourbon mixes and there are also beer and wine options.

Love the typical tv's above the bar playing old movies and the shuffle board in the back of the room. There is a wide variety of seating options available and servers are very helpful with suggesting different drinks to try.

This is a nice new option in Yaletown and thankfully gets you off of Mainland and Hamilton. Next round will include a food tasting and I'm already pretty excited!

haha I agree with Brittany W. - this is what you might expect if Sherlock Holmes designed a bar. Very sophisticated and "academic" feeling atmosphere; I felt compelled to be discussing Jane Austen or something other than more uncivilized modern matters. But don't worry lads; there are still TVs at the bar to keep an eye on the game. Oh and speaking of the bar, ladies, there is eye candy to be found behind said bar. Just sayin'.

The staff were fantastic, the cocktails and wine were great, and the appies I sampled were different and awesome as well. (Many verbotten gluten-laden options - boo-urns! - but also an amazing bite-sized polenta appy with a mushroom mixture on top. I would return just for that.) I did feel a bit cramped in the narrow part directly by the bar, because it was so busy while I was there, but this place is definitely worth a return visit. (If you're claustrophobic just go to the more open space at the back.)

I love this beer. It's a great place to chill and hang out. The drinks are good. It seems a little pricey but worth it. The staff are super attentive and friendly.

The appetizers and food are tasty. I don't have much to say. I really like the joint. Good drinks and food, nice atmosphere. It has a cool charm. I know it's a part of the Donnelly Pubs chain, but it still manages to stand out.

I really enjoy and look forward to dropping by or going to any event there. The drink variety and quaint, British pub interior is refreshing. It's comfy.

Tasty cocktails, a warm and cozy interior, and some really great (and different!) items on the menu - this place is a win. I don't tend to hang out in pubs often, but I can see myself coming here a lot - it felt much more comfortable and cerebral than a lot of the standards in Vancouver, which is sometimes exactly what the day calls for.

    I'm a fan!

If Sherlock Holmes was commissioned to design a bar, one could imagine it would be something like this:

"An academic upwardly sophisticated spot where gregarious socialites converse, discuss discourses of all proportions and copiously consume wine."

These are the feelings The New Oxford exudes, at least during the brilliant event tonight. Yet again, the Donnelly Group has successfully opened another fabulous venue with a friendly and attentive staff and manager. It's definitely a comfortable little spot I'd hit up any evening of the week.

It's true guys, what they say is true!  Went to The New Oxford yesterday and it was just jumping with awesome energy and vibe!  It was Thursday and there wasn't even any games on, I can only imagine the turn out if there was!

DHM has done a fabo job on the renovations and decor, from the long glossy bar down to the retro chaise in the front, every detail is well thought out and put together.  Although I couldn't help myself still picturing the space as Soho Billiards way back in the day.

Great local taps and GI Winter Ale on tap, woot!!  My veggie sandwich was delish, and service is top notch.

I have indeed found my new hang out pub.

Another great Donnelly location. My newest afternoon favorite.

I'd come here any day of the week. So far I've only been in on afternoons, and the food is delicious. Best bets: Poutine, or the House Soup (Cream of mushroom with Truffle!)

Another reviewer remarked that the old english feel is something you'd expect if Sherlock Holmes designed a social house. Yes! And it works.
I love the canvas portraits of old oxfordians that line the dark wood-panelled walls. (And a shuffleboard in the back room! is a nice touch.)
There's a variety of seating options, window tables up front, cozy back area for couples and groups, and a long central bar area for solos to mingle while watching the game.

I went here with a friend of mine on Wednesday night, and it was a great! We had a couple of pitchers, wings, and nachos. the beer, wine, and cocktail selection is quite good. Whenever I can get a pitcher of Philips for $12.75, i'm a happy camper!

Nachos were delicious. With two layers of cheese, every chip is tasty. Lots of other tasty toppings as well - plus guacamole is free (many other places charge extra...ridiculous!) Wings were on special for $4 a pound and were good, too.

The ambience is quite nice. It's a very long room, dim lighting, and comfy seating. It's definitely a place I can spend hours in. The bathrooms were also clean, albeit slight small.

Service wise, it was good, too. Everyone was kind and knowledgeable, but not intrusive.

The only qualm I have is the seemingly constant disappointment of certain beers being unavailable. I was dying to try the Granville Island Raspberry Ale, but alas, all out. The same thing happened with quite a few other beers as well. Too bad!

All in all, a solid 4/5. I'll be back when i'm in Yaletown!

I remember this place as Shakin Not Stirred and to see the Donnelly Group turn this place into the New Oxford is fantastic. They have lots of TV for sports viewing, a good selection of beer, and they offer gluten free sanwiches!

Food was good, but considering we were the only people in the restaurant it shouldn't have taken 45 minutes.

We ordered and 15 minutes later our server told us they were out of what my husband ordered - so he had to order something else.  We asked if she could bring out the rest of our food right away, and yet that still took another 30 minutes.

There was no explanation and in my opinion, no excuse.  I could understand waiting a bit if it were busier.

Nice pub, and the noise level was reasonable, for a Donnelly pub. Pleasant surprise there. Had a pitcher (lots of head ruined the 'value' aspect) of Driftwood Ale from YYJ and it was excellent. Lunch portions were so-so. Nice bench seating by the window. Would go back.

I recently went to the New Oxford with friends. We hadn't planned on making it a drinking night but the house cocktails that were on sale were delicious!

I had a Streets Ahead (strong but good) but preferred my friend's Double Dutch (a little sweeter). She, on the other hand, really liked our friend's Springtime Collins. So you really have your choice of cocktails.

The food was quite good. After one taste, I coveted my friend's appetizer mussels. Good sized mussels & a delicious sauce. They were also smart enough to add bread to sop up the extra sauce.

My roast beef sandwich was delicious and the fries were beautifully crunchy without feeling oily. I kept room for dessert; they serve Trees cheesecake, one of the best cheesecakes out there. *On a separate note, if you pass by a Trees that has mango cheesecake, you MUST have some. Must.

Back to the pub, I would definitely go again. The staff were attentive & fast. Our waitress was bright & friendly. The chairs are comfortable. My only warning is the same as a few other reviews: they don't take debit cards. Make sure you either have cash or credit on you. I believe there's a $2 surcharge for the ATM in the front.

    Outside of that, very good.

Walked up from the QE Theatre after Riverdance on a Sunday afternoon.  Great ambiance, comfy seating, good prices, great staff - attentive and whoever picked out the  girls skirts get's my vote for decor enhancement.  Draft beer and Caesar's were good, the menu just pefect.  We had mussels, warmed olives, fish and chips, pastrami on rye, and a veggie sandwich, all with fries - tasty!!!!  And the prices are good too!  Thanks to our server Sarah - Penny from Big Bang Theory.
