I've been to the Mod Club a few times now. Here's a venue that isn't dripping with clubland douchebaggery nor is it a moldy hipster dive. It's a respectable bar and concert venue that caters to a mixed crowd. I like it.

The Diamond Rings / Twin Shadow concert was rad. I'm always excited when artists choose this over other (dreaded) mid-sized venues in the city. Thomas H's description of this place is apt. The sound quality is excellent and doesn't melt your insides with bass. Every view of the stage is great and because of this there is less "crushing" to the front of the hall, which means you can actually enjoy the show. No need to elbow anyone in the gut.

This place also does well as a bar. The bartenders here are swift, and the elongated bar ensures shallow queues. The beer selection is pretty blah, so I usually stick with mixed drinks here.

They have a coat check which is handy in the winter months, but the line up on the way out can be intense in their tiny lobby. Pull a Vivek and snake your coat before the encore. Smart.

    See you soon, Mod Club.

Obligatory Title Pun: A CLUB for the MODern era.

    Menu Readability: Whateves.

Need to mention: Their bathrooms are like a mile away. Make sure to tip the attendant.

What this place teaches me about myself: I wrote a novella about a bathroom attendant who learns how to travel through time, but can only stay in bathrooms, and ends up changing the course of the history all while handing out papertowels and spritzing men with cologne, but it turned out to be a dream. I mean the writing the novella part not the time travel. /drugs

    VIBE
It's a nightclub/concert venue. Dark, dank and pretty much your typical event venue. Kind of feels like it's hard to get to. I don't feel like it's a terribly convenient venue to get to. The crowd is dependent on the concert. Bar staff are quick. I've usually never had a problem with the security here. There are two levels here and those stairs are pretty precarious to walk on. Bring good shoes.

    THE GOODS
I've been here a few times. I was here once to see the Presets and they were AMAZING. This was the perfect venue to dance your booty off. I have also been here for an event called "Ho Ho TO" and it's fun but I feel with a lot of moving around it got to be too much. I'd like to see something like that at another venue to compare.

    OBLIGATORY CATCHY REMARK
Not exactly the 60s anymore but it's as mod as the Mod Club can be (oh that was terrible). #don'tquitdayjob

If you make guest list on The Mod Club website it makes half prices $5 for enter fee.If you don't it normal prices $10.

I asked a staff about a guest list before the day I went,he told me that I don't need guest list and come to the Club.
    So I paid $10+Coat Check $3.
This Club fee is the most expensive that I've known for just 4hours, between 22pm-2am opening time.

    Music:Techno,House.
I wasn't excited because there not many costumers and they didn't have play HipHop,R&B and Reggae also 2floor was closed on friday night..

Good thing is a good security control.

Trashy, Grungy dance floor in the middle with odd wet marks on the ceilings and a small stage. My kind of place.

Came here Thursday 28th evening for Glitch Mob...BOY was it epic. The bathroom is a cest pool of disgusting BUT when everyone is on something doubt it's noticeable.

The crowd here is interesting. You have the skaters, the odd old Asian guy looking to re-live his Saturday night at Guv, the 37yr old girls with bad dye jobs aching to be noticed, the occasional goths with cool contact lenses, The abercrombie and Fitch daddy's car -kid that knows nothing about the band, The random cool peeps, the phenom dance moves kinda folk and last but not least the beloved drifters coming to check whats up.

The bouncer is a Pakistani guy who speaks broken English and looks like a tank. It gets packed quite quickly and they DO check ID. smoking section is just outside. Which is fantastic - you can walk out.. take a left keep walking and there's a tiny fountain with some seats around it. If you choose to, you can smoke a J, do some planking, do some double planking, do some triple planking, do some cartwheels, what eves. Get chilled and go back in. It's pretty sweet.

There is a bar to the right side of the door that serves beer and standard alcoholic drinks. Don't bother ordering any mixes, it's so noticeably diluted with water. Shame shame.

Overall, extremely fun place to come watch an electronic band. The group IS REALLY nice, they totally come down to talk to fans and are so open to take pictures. I would love to come back here for any event.

Incredible music venue. The sound quality is awesome.

I'm rather sensitive to loud bass. This is one of the very few venues where I can see a hip hop or electronic concert and I don't need earplugs.

Also, the stage is raised to just the right level. It's easy to see whoever is on stage.

-one of the stars is to balance the inexplicable negative reviews on here. some of which admit that the sound is incredible. Isn't this the most important aspect of a music venue?

My review is based solely on the Mod Club being a concert venue.

I've seen numerous bands play at the Mod Club, and have always had a positive experience. The acoustics at the venue are great, feedback is rarely heard and the bass is kept to a minimal level. Therefore, even if you forget earplugs, your ears will not be ringing for hours after the concert.

The venue is small, compact and has air conditioning (unlike other venues in Toronto, they actually turn up the air conditioning before a concert; therefore creating a cool environment).

The stage is quite high off the ground, therefore enabling even the shortest individual to see from far away with ease. And, there are also seats beside the dance floor allowing people to take a break, and watch the concert without having to stand or push to the front of the stage.

Overall, the venue is awesome. Whenever I see that one of my favourite bands is coming to Toronto and playing the Mod Club, I rush out to buy tickets.

The beer selection is mediocre at best. No Tankhouse...not even Steamwhistle or Creemore! $6 gets you a bottle of Molson Canadian or Coors Light.

I've seen some great bands here and the sound is alright. A decent place to stand is to the right of the stage on the sort of elevated area. The worst place is along the main bar because you end up contending with bar patrons as well as being situated on the route to the WC.

It gets mighty hot in here and it frequently smells like wet garbage.

Also, there seem to be a lot of all ages shows. Take that any way you like it.

    Total joke!

Unfortunately I will probably never go back to this venue. This was not my first time here but will be my last.

We went to the Chalk Circle/ Blue Peter show this past Friday, january 21st. We had bought our tickets in advance for the show so we wouldn't have to wait and could just go in. HAHAHAHAHA so much for being pro-active!
The concert by the way started at 8:00pm??? okay we can work with that, got to the Mod Club and had to wait in line????????????? For what I have my ticket!!!!!!!! missed the first half of the show because I had to wait in sub-zero temps, just so the bouncers at the door had something useless to do. WHY am I waiting in line to see a show I've already paid for????  Oh and we didn't get to check our jackets because we would have had to wait again and miss even more of the show!

The show once we were in was really great and I can only say good things about both performances. (that I did get to see!)

The show ended promptly at 10:00pm, okay we will stay and hang out for awhile.HAHAHA they shut everything down on us!!! They turned on the overhead lights, shut the bars ETC..........because they were setting up for a DJ.
Honestly, there is nothing like being kicked out of a place at 10:00, no one announced last call!!!!!!!! I felt like a geriatric being forced to go home to bed!!!

That is the end of my rant.  :)

This is actually not a bad place to see a show. The stage is so high up that even in a crowd, it's easy to see the performers. I have been for a few NXNE concerts, and those don't tend to fill up, so I've gotten a good spot near the stage.

The only negative I can think of is the beers on offer are pretty generic junky beers.

I have no comment on the "dance party nights" as I wouldn't be caught dead at them.

I was here last night for a Bell X1 concert and it was sweeeet.

I love how there was empty space in the middle as well as tables and chairs along the sides with warm glowy fake candles. It really set the mood. And you can stand and dance, or you can just sit and enjoy!

    Acoustics were nice too :]

(My review might be slightly biased by Bell X1 since they're all amazing.)

Defintely overhyped but a solid place.

I"ve been to it for two types of events.

Concert - Meh as a venue. 2/5 stars, I'd say. It's just WAY too small and crowded and for the prices the concerts usually are, it's not worth it.

Events like Saturday's UK underground thing - AWESOMMMME!!!! 4/5. Extremely enjoyable, great music selection, atmosphere, cute tables where you can put your booze and chat with friends, and then bubbles from the ceiling at the end of the night. And ladies: you can haggle the cover cost from 10 to 5 bucks ;)

    Booze prices are average.

Now this is a story all about how
I made a mistake and went to hell
I'd like to take a minute
    Just sit right there
I'll tell you about The Mob Club
And how it's fucked beyond all repair

In West Toronto born and raised
On my computer is how I spent most of my days
CSing it up, getting headshots, pwning the n00bs
    Thinking I'm hella cool
When I noticed my fiancee was up to no good
And gave me that look that I understood
She wanted a night out, and there was no doubt
Otherwise for the next week she would not put out
She said "I want a nice night out with the man I love"
So we went out to dinner and then headed to The Mod Club

The dinner was nice, but before I knew
My fiancee wanted to dance - the night wasn't through
We headed for the club, and it seemed like it was packed
I face_palmed because there was no turning back

The cover charge was absurd and the drinks were overpriced
The club was small, people were terrible, it was a horrible night
My fiancee liked The Mod Club, but I thought this was a terrible bar
And for that I am forced to give it two stars

Mod Club started with 1 star in my iPhone.  Sarah T and I stood outside in the rain for almost 30 mins past "doors open" time and it made me really mad.

    The good:
    - The sound in here was good - really good actually - not too loud but still loud enough for a concert, crisply mixed and each mic was clearly articulated
    - The ambient temperature was nice
    - Good size room - a couple hundred people

    The bad:
    - The inappropriately advertised start time (-1 star)
    - Lady in the bathroom that gives you soap and expects you to give her money.  This is a particularly sore point for me, because you have NO option except to take her soap - she holds the ONLY soap.  And I refuse to pay her for that. (-1 star)

    The weird-and-hilarious:
I saw my landlord here at a Brandi Carlile show.

    Would I go back here?
If there was a concert I wanted to see I think it's a good venue.  I would never ever ever set foot in this place for dance party night.  Even if Jennifer L wanted to give the danceparty another try.

Don't expect me here on a dance club night, because, well, I don't go out dancing nor do I like sweaty rejects who can't keep their shit together after a couple of drinks.

On the flipside, I've seen some pretty great concerts here. Great sound, nice sized venue, cool flashing lights, each concert experience has been quite good.

HOWEVER, sad to say, some amazing shows have been held on these lameo club nights, which means a) early show, thus having to have shorter and rushed sets for these wonderful bands and b) having the horrific dance music from the club downstairs (?) filter through the floor and interrupt these musicians' perfect sounds. i.e. Joanna Newsom with her pretty voice and angelic harp rudely interrupted by the harsh club beats vibrating through the walls and the floor. also, Grizzly Bear/Beach House performances shortened because club night just couldn't wait.

Concert Promoters & Bookers: avoid booking shows on club night, please.

Easy peasy, go on the website, sign up for guest list, they email you, and make sure you get there before midnight. You won't have to wait as long in line, I think. AND you get a reduced cover of five bucks.

DJ MRK was working it on Saturday. Gotta say, it is really nice to go to a dance place that plays more than top 40 (not to say I didn't dance my heart out to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance", mimicking the strange choreography from the music video projected on huge screens, because I did and I liked it). I'm just saying, I like the variety. I like that I can booty shake to some pop and then power-stance-dance to some rock, whether I've heard it before or not.

Word of advice: Don't take the lollipops or use any of the products in the lady's washrooms. I paid two dollars for a chuppa chup. As I reached for it, the attendant raises a money dish and said, "only if you show me some love". Duped.

Ok, the number one reason to go? Seriously, I'm not sure what nights it is limited to, but at midnight the answer is clear: bubble machines. All of a sudden, millions of perfect bubbles are everywhere. You just dance in them! Don't worry, not that gross spring-break-foam-why-did-I-wear-this-nice-outfit bubbles. Just pretty, delicate bubbles surrounding everyone. It will take your inner four year old to a new place of happiness and wonder.

Mod Club is a classic nightclub with DJs and live acts. I went there on a saturday, when the weekly party "UK Underground" takes place.

The Mod is a big place with a large dancefloor, a stage, two bars in the lower level and a mezzanine with two more bars, tables/booths and theoretically a second DJ. "Theoretically" because while there *is* a DJ there, it's absolutely impossible to hear anything that he's playing. There isn't any form of sound isolation from the main dancefloor - which has a considerably powerful soundsystem.

Overall it's a cool place, but the crowd is a bit of a mixed bag. There's your regular clubbers and music fans, but be prepared to face a fair amount of douchebaggery and 905ers. On the other hand, if you dig the idea of turning your saturday night into an anthropological study once in a while, this is the place to be.

Oh, before I forget: Mrk Mod is really one of the best pop DJs I've ever seen -- not so much because of the technique, but for being a genuine entertainer.

Hey I read the review below, and I'm not really sure why all these clueless Americans are even allowed to review a city they aren't from.

There are some great sound systems in the city, and I would hardly call someone living in Toronto for one year an expert on it.

Would you say i was an expert on New York after one year? Doubt it.

Here's the run down on the MOD club:
Not the best club in the city, but then again, College is not known for the best clubs.
The sound basically becomes garbage when you get to the top floor ad the layout is like a theatre.
The bouncers are some of the worst in the city, BUT, when they hit it, they hit it right.
The bookings are great, and definitely reflect their distinct personality.

Gary Numan was fantastic at the MOD club. The show, the music, the sound, the everything. But I saw Tegan and Sara there and hated it, and I love that band.

Mark Holmes really gives it the personal touch which transfers into everything they do. If you're a concert goer, don't go on the weekends for club night, and if you're more of a clubber, don't go for the concerts. The crowds are never the same.

And Vanessa, most bands bring their own sound and lighting techs (if they're real pros), maybe your music tastes needs an adjustment?

    Just a suggestion.

When it comes to concert venues in Toronto in the 400-500 person capacity range, NOTHING comes remotely close to testing the Mod Club. Nothing.

The lighting at The Mod Club is unparalleled for venues of this size. It really is unfortunate that concert lighting is usually an afterthought, at best. Lighting really helps create a sort of 'star-power' for new indie artists, and adds a huge element that is missing from most small-mid sized concert venues.

The acoustics are head and shoulders above the competition, and the warm vibes continue to churn out fantastic live shows.  Fast-forward to 2:35 in this clip to check the lighting, sound and vibe in effect: http://www.youtube.com...

The hardwood flooring and deep velvet curtains around the stage give the Mod Club a nice warm energy.  The shape of the room is as such that a medium turnout (300 people) still looks good, while the spot can pack in up to 550 patrons when the balcony is open.

The only downfalls in my mind are the power-hungry staff (the bouncer's are pretty immature) and the horrendous LCD displays behind the bar which rotate a reel of cheesy brand logos.

    Mixed feelings about the place.

Their guestlist system works like a charm and I paid only 5 bucks. I arrived at 10:30 and the place was empty. I had cheap Jager while danced like a crazy to old 80's hits, until the guy decided to play trashy 90s dance.

I didn't like the band who played yesterday May 15, but this is very personal. The next DJ was one of the WORST DJs I've ever seen in my life, totally unable to mix tracks, trying to make mashups like a 3 year-old, and I almost left the place because of him. BUT...
    ..

OMG DJ MRK-MOD IS AWESOME. Really. I couldn't stop dancing for a single second. The guy understand the concept of "fire on the dancefloor". I don't like Lady Gaga and I was so excited THIS GUY MADE ME DANCE TO LADY GAGA. There's lots of special effects during his presentation, I strongly recommend his show.

The next guy was good too and I stayed there until 2AM, when I was totally exhausted and had to go home.

Drinks are not expensive, but not cheap also. If you're in a group, I'd suggest asking for their bottle service - seems a good deal for lots of people drinking.

There's 2 ATMs inside, very helpful, as they seem to only accept money at coat check and bar.

I remember when this place used to be a pool hall that catered to the what-appeared-to-be wise guys in Little Italy.  It had been through a few different changes over the course of the years, but it appears that the Mod Club has found its niche, and though not found in the downtown core, it's definitely a place that does live music well.

A relatively small room, raised stage, and beyond adequate lighting and sound stage help make the night.  Though good for DJs, the venue shines as a live music venue.  The acoustics are surprisingly good for what amounts to a high ceilinged box, with balcony views available for those that like a bit of height.

Two bars run the length of the club, one on dance floor level, the other on the raised lounge area house right.  Picture the Kool Haus (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) but scaled way way down and with much better sound.  The other great thing about this area?  When you're done with the show, there's Little Italy for food, drinks, and the looks from dejected wise guys that got thrown out of their pool hall.

What to say about the Mawwd Club?

Now, I can have fun anywhere. I am not a nightlife snob, I even used to go to the club district for retro Sunday nights, back in the day. But most of the time when I end up here, it is for a specific reason (being taken there by a specific person), or because I have not wanted to venture very far from home (usually in the winter), since it's about a 5 minute walk from my house.

Our British cultural fascination is not what it once was, five years ago. Even when the Mod Club Theatre opened, it felt like it was kind of already over. Once Blow Up (remember? At Lee's Palace??) had its last hurrah, things didn't feel the same, and it's cuz they weren't. This has always seemed far more contrived than the other, and way less fun. However, I have the utmost love and respect for Mr. Mark Holmes, that I promise you. http://en.wikipedia.or...

I remember strongly disliking: the go-go dancers on the stage, which I assumed were a part of perks I got with the ludicrous $15 dollar cover charge. I would have voted no, had they asked.

Fun fact: 'twas after a trip here that I threw up for the first (and only) time, for alcohol-related reasons. Which seems about right. It also, incidentally, marks the last time I ever drank Smirnoff Ice. These things all seem to encapsulate the way I feel about this place.

I can only really speak of this place as a concert venue, because I've never ventured in on a club night.  It's a good sized venue with a decent (albeit not amazing) sound system.  I've seen a few different acts play here.

The first band I saw here (The Killers...) was so bad that I thought the venue must have had something to do with it: "well, they were bad, but they couldn't have been that bad... it must be a bad venue."  You know what I mean.  We've all had those thoughts of a venue at one point or another.

Eventually I went back for some other shows and have found myself consistently pleased by the results, the best being an acoustic show featuring John K Samson, Bryan Webb and Christine Fellows.  Considering each of them played songs acoustically, and that the show itself was a blast, leads me to decide that this venue is actually great for these kind of shows.

Since then, I've been other shows with full bands, and they've all sounded good, too.  This is definitely a place you should give more than one chance.  It's not the best, but occasionally it'll provide a gem for you.

Best live music venue in the city, in my opinion.

After suffering through years of combinations of bad bands, bad acoustics and crappy locations, I've finally found the winning combination and The Mod Club is it.

From the Cold War Kids in 2007 through the Shout Out Louds last night, the Mod Club consistently delivers great indie bands and incredible acoustics all in the middle of Little Italy.

Check out a live show on a whim and you'll be happy you did.

My only beef, live shows start early and end early on Saturday nights, so pay attention to when the doors open, because the bands hit the stage on time.

Lovely little venue. In a day of awful concert venues and stadium shows this sweet  little club hits the spot. Saw cutie pie Matt Nathanson here last week, nice crowd (why are Canadians so stiff at concerts?) Not much dancing, but the layout of the club is comfy with a backwall of seats and full bar. Reminds me of Slim's in San Fran. Got a chance to see someone perform here- you'll like.

i was just at the mod club last night for a brmc show... it reminded me how awful the sound here is. and the lights. plus it's kind of hard to enjoy a show while the vent system above is leaking.

i'd still say that if a band you like is playing here, it's a very intimate venue and probably worth the ticket price, but you will not be able to hear a word they say or a note they play-- it all just becomes a loud jumble of noise.

the lighting is always very predictable. i'm not sure if the band decides this or not, but every show i've been to here has the same lighting setup-- strobes, three colours of overhead lights, and a grid in the back with red/blue/white. they pretty much just flash the various lights on and off, trying to keep the beat, but it ends up looking very contrived

and merch is a full 50%+ more than what you'd expect to pay at any venue in the states. i've been going to shows in nyc my whole life and have never seen band t-shirts for $40. it really sucks that they think they can take advantage because everything else is more expensive here.

I always have a fun time at the Mod Club. Sound is great. Lighting and stage setup is always excellent. Staff seem cool. One of the best clubs in TO.

i suppose it all depends on what you see here, but having seen Ben Kweller here and coming here for the first time it was a great experience.  we were farther back for the opening act and still the sound was great.  in between sets, while other dummies went to the bathroom or snagged some run of the mill beers, we shimmied up front to catch nose hair glimpses of Kweller himself and were all the more delighted to have done so.  he is awesome and so was his band.

but this being a review of the mod club, i shall move along properly.  adorning the ceiling are these huge white discs, im guessing made of fabric.  perhaps they are for sound.  i dont really have anything interesting to say about that. sorry.  just noticed it is all.

okay. let's try this:  there were really, and i mean REALLY cool light patterns on the wall man. ya dig?

    (hows that?)

well wit's end here folks:  the beer was standard in its selection, the coat check girl needed some help - too many people, two hands only, the bouncers need to find a sense of humour - which bouncer doesnt.  (do they have awards somewhere that all bouncers go to - the most miserable award of the night...goes to the ENTIRE CROWD OF BOUNCERS ATTENDING!!!!)

for the right band though, id definitely come here again because its...

    rad at the mod.

I went there for The Hush Sound show in July, all ages show and it was still good. The bouncers didn't have to do much and the bartenders were quick too.

The sound quality was fairly good, it wasn't overly loud like at other venues.

As another reviewer said, it has a theater layout, not too much of an area for sitting, huge dance floor. That could perhaps be adjustable.
