The Met is one of the Donnellys that has managed to retain its own vibe best, I think. It's still a DTES dive bar with incredibly low prices, but Donnelly has brought in some local craft beers (they have Driftwood on tap) to augment the cheap beer selection. I haven't tried the food, but I love the menu concept here - it's separated into $2, $4, and $8 plates (if I remember correctly).

Big ol' dirty heritage Vancouver room, pinball, cheap prices, great location. I'm really, really glad it wasn't totally gentrified.

The Met used to have amazing dancing..

These days I only show up for a mid-afternoon beer and a half dozen games of Whitewater or Twilight Zone pinball - but for that, it definitely serves it's purpose.

It's nice that the drinks are cheap (for downtown) and there weren't any total sketch bags lurking about.   I appreciate that in a DTES bar (does that count as the east side still?).

honestly though - HEY METROPOLE! fix the taps in your women's washroom!

I like Metropole on a wet, dark, dreary day when all I want is a shitty beer and some warmth.

I headed over to meet a friend for a beer after work. We met up around 4 and the place was pretty empty. Games on the tvs a few people at the bar but mostly empty. We took up a booth and hung out for a while.

The beer was not great, but I didn't expect much.

The servers were cute and nice.

    I'd go back.

The Met is a dangerous place. $2 beers, $3 highballs, pool table, pinball machine, karaoke night and great music on Friday nights. Caution should be exercised. Last time I was there, one of our gals almost brawled some redneck in an arm cast who looked like Kevin Federline. It was quickly defused when Salt-n-Pepa's, "Push It" came on. Yes, caution must be carefully observed, because the good wild times can easily get out of control at a dive bar when drinks are dirt cheap and you are with awesome company. Drinking on a budget has never been so exciting.

How many times can a group of people say "Are you serious?!" in one sitting. Let's find out.

    $3 beer specials. AYS?!
$6 burger w/ chips and beer. I say AYS?!
$2 appies. $4 appies. We all say AYS?!
$4 burger and beer happy hour on Thursdays. AYS?!
$2 beer on Tuesdays. Can I get a AYS?!
Big screen hockey games and other sporting events. AYS?!
Walk right in and sit right down. AYS!?
Retro video game systems, free for the playing. We played 4-player Mario Kart until our thumbs were crying for help. AYS?! Fo realzies.

All this, and friendly staff. A no-frills, cheap but tidy pub that makes you feel welcomed. The food is not gourmet, but at these prices and this fun environment, a lot of fancy is quickly overlooked. The Metropole is very unlike the other Donnelly Pubs and the trendy new spots in Gastown.

Ahhhhhh the metropole.... How i love and loath you.

But seriously this place is just grand. Cheap food, cheap booze and great people. what more can a guy ask for? As well Tuesdays are $2 beers.... Too many hungover Wednesdays because of that.

Most of the time this place is a pub/dive bar. But at about 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays you see the place start to take flight. The servers and managers will start moving all the table and stools around. Next thing you know you're in a club. Now I used the word "club" lightly. Don't expect to see a bunch of geno gangsters in the met. This place is a great time. Not classy by any reach, but just a down right good time.

I would suggest the world try....... but that might make the line too long.

I love the Met. Perhaps it's my humble roots that favour a non-pretentious atmosphere, or the $8 veggie burger w/ chips. Or perhaps it's the goth staff serving a sporty crowd with a smile on all the same. All these things make me happy.

The Met even takes reservations for major sporting events when most places won't. Awesome!

I know it caused controversy when The Donnelly Group bought the pub last year. I felt much happier to come here when I found out that TDG donates 25% of their profits to charities based into the Downtown Eastside. So drink up, you're doing the local community good.

I don't go to the Met when most people go to the Met, I go around one pm on random weekdays after school. I really only go there to play pinball so I can't really say much about the crowd or the ambiance as it's always pretty empty when I am there. What I can say is that the servers are pleasant, and the pinball machines (currently Twilight Zone and Whitewater) are well maintained. Also, the beer is cheap and they have Driftwood on tap. Neat.

I really miss the old Met a lot.

The old Metropole had this lovely divey charm that has since come and gone. It was the type of place where you could walk in wearing whatever you want and you'd never be judged. It was like Cheers; the kind of place where you see the same people every time you visit.

After they renovated, they tried to make the Met into something that it isn't. I feel like the only things that separate the old Met from the new are several new TVs, higher priced drinks, and an allure that only a bro could love. They used to have those DJs that were so incredibly bad but were still somewhat charming. Now they're just plain bad.

It's a really sad fact that the only thing that is reminiscent of the old Met is the sticky floor.

Last night was my first visit to this little dive. We were going to catch a flick at the Odeon Cinema in International Village, and needed to get a quick bite beforehand. I had a coupon from the Entertainment Book for this place, and so we thought we'd check it out - namely because it was a Donnelly pub...and their pubs are all great, right? Wrong.
This place is certainly the most grungy of all Donnelly pubs - but I'm a small town girl, and can deal with a little grunge.  The service was pretty much crap.  There were only 2 other tables in there when we first arrived, and it took over 20 minutes to get drinks, or service.  I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, sans the coleslaw, and asked for a house salad instead of the BBQ chips that come with it. Sadly I was disappointed in EVERYTHING I had.  There's only 3 types of salad dressing to choose from (yah, yah, yah, but still, I'm used to variety).
Maybe if you're only looking for a place to have drinks, then this place might not be so bad - super cheap drinks, foosball, and shuffleboard! But, if you like good service, and good food, I'd go elsewhere.

    $2.25 APPIES!?

    Yes. It's true.

I found this out on Thursday night when I came in with a large group.

The appies are on special from 3-10pm every day (I think?) and there is a pretty good selection! I decided on the big soft warm salty pretzel with spicy mustard. SOOO good. Everyone kept stealing chunks of it. You can also order it with a side of cheese sauce if you want.

Other things I saw on the appy list included onion rings, chicken wings and mac n cheese (Yup.) and tons more.. check the online menu!

There is also a $6 burger + beer deal every day.

Not sure how long they've been owned by the Donnelly Group, but the inside has totally changed since my last visit. Now it looks identical to every other bar owned by them. All the tables and stools are really high up. Everything is black.

I'll be back to take advantage of their cheap eats.

The Met is the top of my favourite pubs list.  It's close to waterfront station (very important after a night of boozing), and the drinks are cheap(er).  That and the non-pretentious atmosphere makes it a winner in my books.

Last time I went they had live music, and pitchers were $12.  Not too bad!

Cheap and Cheerful, w/o the cheerful... Nice try on the appies and prices but don't mind paying a bit more for something more edible. No cheese with the mini burger, so tried again on the big burger. No cheese. Think they were out of cheese. Honey lager were like apple juice after two sips. Washing your pint glasses with loads of disinfectant can do this. But the worst bit is, the smell of deep frying fat, still in the clothes we were wearing. A walk home didn't help get rid!
    Over.

Having been a Vancouverite for 30+  I am sad to say that  never heard of, or knew or the Metropole Pub.

I was attracted by the cheap eats ($2.25 Appies 3-10) and multiple screens for Canuck viewing.

The food is best reserved for AFTER many beverages, Great deal , but a great deal in the 7-11 Burrito at 2 am type of deal.

Good value, lots of cheap eats, and good bar selection. Better than other options in the 'hood but don;t take mom there for eats( if she don't have a good dose of liquor in her)

The met used to be my long time friday night hangout spot in my early twenties. I was really into drum and bass music. Well those days are gone and I hadn't been to the met for years when I was invited for a mustache party last week. Sure, it was a wednesday night but it sounded like fun! It was!

If you wore a mustache you got shots of fireball. The drinks were cheap, the servers were rad and there was kareoke happening at the same time. I'll be hittin up the met very soon again!

Last night was the grand re-opening of Metropole .. with it's flashy neon lights on the outside (so I do not know if the current picture shown on yelp justifies itself).
I've never been to the old MET, but walking in - it reminded me exactly of the Lamplighter in Gastown, except smaller. Music was pumping and there was a large crowd with some dancing and others playing games in the back, or watching sports updates on the TVs.
Staff was friendly, drinks were great... so all is good :)

    Quaint and crazy karaoke bar.
It has a lot of character- me likes that!

It's dark, you've got a hodge podge of high tables with bar stools and low tables with mismatched chairs.  Random hockey stuff on the walls, off to the sides you have some sports on TV.  It's all pretty random.

Karaoke is the thing to do here.  It's free, so why not.  You'll be sure to hear a Beatles tune, some 90s rap, a few surprising songs, and a few BAD ones.  Expect some liveliness from the audience.  i.e. dancing on the table, coming up and singing with you, etc.

Bar is ok, limited on the beer options.  Food menu looked standard and cheaply priced, but I didn't order anything, so can't fully review that yet.

I love the met. 2 dollar beers on tuesdays are never good for my liver or figure but great for me and my friends to be able to go out and drink and hang on a night that usually wouldn't not happen. Also met has a good veggie burger and incredibly cheap food in general. I think you can get a burger and beer anyday for 6 bux. I used to live closer so id randomly go in for the karaoke or a beer now im not sure what the nightly events are but its a great spot to just go and have a cheap fun night out, not common in this city. Also the servers and all the staff are babes, total babes. The vibe is good and the crowd is totally random so everyone feels welcome here.Close to skytrain if you have to get home for work the next day or whatever. You might even get a piece of lovely art from a street person on your way out with the 10 bux you saved on the awesomely cheap drinks. The music sucks but the cheap drinks make up for that too. Overall worth checking out if your up for getting pretty sloshy and having fun. Huge booths so you can chill or theres a decent sized dancefloor as well.Great place to watch the games if thats your thing, tvs everywhere and everyone gets really into it. You also pick a player from a stack and if your player scores you win a free pitcher for your table. I have fun here...did I mention the smokin hot staff?...

Tuesday they have $2 sleeves and a fun DJ. There is a pool table and Big Buck Hunter.

The Music is some nice old hip hop and oldies. It's got the Vancouver hipster thing going but I don't really think Vancouver hipsters go here. It's mostly anyone that wants cheap beer.

It's hard to rate a dive bar more than three stars. By being a dive bar it obviously lacks some of what just about anyone looks for in a place. And man, The Met is a dive bar.

It features cracked floors, busted chairs, shitty beers and arguably the dirtiest toilets in Vancouver.

That said, I've had nothing but good times here. Mostly, through their karaoke nights, the met has brought a lot of charm to its modest bar. The nights used to be a little to hipster-ish and pretentious but nowadays they are more open and fun and anyone can join in.

Personally I had a great time here a few weeks ago. There was a big long weekend party and shine and being unable to get in our group of about 20 came here. Even though it was near last call we all got served, it was way cheaper and the place had a pretty good crowd. the bartender even pushed their early closing a bit because we were spending so much.

If you're stuck for a place or looking to save money in Gastown, give The Met a try. It's got some interesting nights and you're at least never going to feel like you're being ripped off.

I guess seedy would be the word to use here, but I prefer humble. Non-descript and average from the outside, The Met is exactly what you would expect for being located right in between Gastown and the Downtown Eastside, sort of a rich girl / poor boy thing. Kind of run down, it's still got this classic feel, simple and small town, the opposite of hip.

In fact, it's the kind of place you picture when listening to Journey or Bob Seger songs. Which also usually happen to be playing inside, especially on karaoke night. That's another thing, the song selection for karaoke is perhaps the very best in the city, sung by both the younger crowd doing Brian Adams and some old lonely guy singing "My Way" by Frank Sinatra .

The cheap ambiance and the respect for an older generation has kept it looking like a legion, but that just means that there's no cover to get in. It's right on the metaphorical railway tracks of two very different neighborhoods, and as long as you're capable of showing respect to both groups you can dress like a bar star or street person and party like an alcoholic.

i kinda miss the old met, but the new met is alright too. karaoke on wednesdays, a regular assortment of rotating specials, and at the end of the day it's a bar, nothing too special; at least that much hasn't changed. since donnelly bought it out it's not as comfortable and has acquired an "image" (whatever that means), but it's pretty good for a donnelly joint, alot better than most of them to my way of thinking.

i've had friends get purses stolen twice there while dancing, and have heard of others getting the same treatment, so heads up girlies if you're looking to boogie~

The Met used to be a great little dive bar.  Donnelly took over recently and did the same garbage they do to everything they get their hands on.  Tons of LCD screens and paint everything black.  Drink prices went up, and it's college douche town supreme now.  Just like the lamplighter.  Thanks for helping make our city great, Donnelly!

The met rocks, beer and a shot for eight bucks, forty dollars can get you ripped if you pace yourself. The TVs always show great sport including ufc, the staff are great and the Djs are normally prettygood. Wendesday is karaoke although they should change the name to lesbian karaoke but hey, it's a friendly crowd and there's rarely any idiots there. The bouncers are cool to, they're approachable and do a good job. The food at the met is great value, five dollar bacon and eggs sat and sun equals a tasty bargin. The crowd at this place is going to get more flash over time with the woodwards building now opening slowly, definately one to watch.
