4 Words: The Pump is happenin'!
Awesome bar to go to for drinks. Situated on Elgin with neighboring bars and restaurants. The atmosphere is great, especially for an older crowd (21+).
Love that it has an outdoor patio - perfect for that outdoor drinking.
Also love that it's always so dark inside. Gives it more of a romantic/secluded feeling.
Some days it offers movie showings (usually old movies). If you plan to attend one of these events, I suggest coming a bit earlier. This place gets PACKED. Packed like, nowhere-to-sit-no-choice-but-to-leave kind of things, and I speak from experience.
Large selection of beers is a real plus.
Would come here a thousand times again. -

A fun place for a drink, this bar is pretty cool. There are lots of nooks and crannies, and you can really bury yourself in this below-ground watering hole. There is a fair selection of beer (although not fantastic). The food isn't bad, but nothing outstanding. I appreciated the excellent selection of wings in different flavours, and the service was great.

Despite the very weird name, I liked this place -- it's probably one of the best bars in Ottawa to wet your whistle. In my mind, for some reason, this is like a really popular Ottawa-version of "Cheers"

We come here weekly after our teams volleyball games as they have a promotion with our league.
The Pump is in the basement of the building and has a nice cozy feel. Yes it can get a little cramped in there but it's a nice feel.
This place has the best playlist for any of the pubs I've gone to multiple times in Ottawa.
The food is ok at night but I don't like the brunch to much. The wait staff is pretty fun and I do like the beers that they carry. -

The Pump brunch is an Elgin Street staple. And like an actual staple it's inexpensive!
I've been going to this place for brunch for months as most of the other regulars you find at the Pump. You get a massive breakfast with actual fruit, eggs, giant home fries (or salad), meat (or cheese) for under $8.
Today, like most days, you didn't have to wait for your food as they're quite speedy and they are quick to keep the coffee coming. Although the cream had turned which was a bit of a rude experience but hey, they were quick to correct the situation and apologize!
You'll find a lot of young hangovers here or just people sauntering around the city stopping in for a big cheap breaky. I don't have anything but praise for the Pump -- before sundown. The night time Pump experience is one that I can't speak to as I've rarely hit this pub after dark. -

AVOID THE BRUNCH: expensive, horrible service, overcrowded, very uncomfortable and the brunch itself blows.
GREAT FOR: pre-drinks or meeting a friend. Watching sport events are ok too. The food is actually pretty good. They also have a yearly 1984 night with 1984 prices. The patio is also great for people watching.
NOT SO GREAT FOR: brunch, meeting women, large groups, chicken wings. -

When you visit Ottawa for a weekend, invariably you take on a brunch of some sort. As such, everyone tends to have their favourites, so when it was one of my party's turn to pick, we hit Lieutenant's Pump. Found downtown on Elgin Street, you figure it's going to be packed with a line-up out the door. A quick glance as you approach confirms your fears.
The layout of the Pump is kind of, for lack of better description, all over the place. An atrium of seats exist immediately as you enter the pub, with a narrow hallway past the bar leading you to a large L-shaped area at the back. It's small enough that you can find your way around and find others in your party, but I feel sorry for the folks who may be drunk and trying to find a bathroom.
The place is definitely pubby in style and does not have any of the airs or affects of a franchise pub. This has the warmth of a local neighbourhood pub and I've experienced it several times at night. However it's on the brunch that it staggers a bit. The menu is genuinely wide enough to please most-to-all and as such does make it a great place to go. Sadly, it's in the service end where things begin to fall apart. The staff seems somewhat overwhelmed with the rush that they inevitably get every Saturday and Sunday morning, leaving you waiting for a longer time than expected, and reasoning exactly why it is they have a line-up outside. Once it's there the food is decent enough, though I wonder at times if it is genuinely worth the wait. -

The Lieutenant Pump is possibly the largest pub on Elgin Street. With a large patio and indoor space, it's an ideal place for large groups. However, this pub has managed to balance large space with comfy nooks. There are many different areas of the pub to inhabit, depending on your mood, interest in the hockey game on the TVs and the size of your group.
Their drink selection is pretty swell, with wine, liquor and approximately 15 beers on tap. The service I've had has been consistently good.
However, sitting out on the large patio on a summer night watching the people go by is probably the best feature of this bar. -

I've had drinks their at night a few times, and recently had brunch there earlier this month. If you are a coffee person you will like this place because they have someone going around with a coffee pot giving refills (i.e. they seemingly have a staff solely dedicated to refilling coffee and tea). I'm not a coffee drinker so it didn't really matter much to me though.
I had the omelette. I've had better, but I've also had worse. My buddy had the french toast. I gave it a try and my sentiments were the same as they were about the omelette.
I liked our server, but she didn't really come over to our table much to be honest. It would have been better if she checked in on us a little more. There is less ambience than somewhere like The Manx, but they have a bigger patio than most other places in the area, so if you like sitting outside you should definitely give them a try. -

I love this place. it is not the best food in town, but it is huge with 3 different bar rooms and it has space to sit almost anytime. the hockey games are on the tvs in all the rooms at night and the service is just fine. the beer is typical pub selections and so is the food, but they are friendly and it is a great experience. one of the best parts for us is it is walking distance from our home.
