Good thai food... but really expensive prices.

My first experience at the King & I was years ago for my Wedding Rehearsal Dinner.

The atmosphere is quite grande - I would definitely feel out of place here in jeans and a t-shirt.  It definitely is beautiful for a special night out on the town.

I found the quality of food to be good but no better than a few of my other favorite little gems in town - consequently, I did not find their high prices to be proportionate to the quality or quantity of food.

With vegetarian dishes starting at $17.00 and most curries and meat dishes starting at $19 and ranging up to $25... it's definitely on the pricey side.

Their current menus can be found at http://www.TheKingAndI.ca

Had a friend and his wife visiting so decided we'd all head out for dinner.  After a few of our usual backup places proved to be full, we were able to make a reservation here - a first time visit for all of us.  With a big side of rice, we all picked a main course dish to share (5 in total).  The portions were quite large (we took away a small doggy bag) and the food was quite tasty, but for what we got I believe the prices were a bit on the high side.  Also, the tables are so packed into the main room that everyone eats in close proximity of the tables  around.

I have been to The King and I several times since moving to Edmonton (and once before we even moved here), and every time, I look at the menu, and my eyes widen at the prices.  This is easily the most expensive Thai restaurant I have been to in Edmonton, maybe anywhere.  The food is good, but simply not worth the price, not when there are so many other, better Thai restaurants in town.

They have a decent vegetarian menu, and I like that they will make many of their soups vegetarian.  The tofu on their dishes is served in larger pieces - velvety smooth on the inside and crisped to perfection on the outside.  This tofu is obviously not pre-fried and then frozen.

The location is nice, right on Whyte Ave.  And there is usually not a wait, so when you're walking along Whyte and realize that your famished, craving Thai, and want a sit-down dinner right away, well, then this is the place to go.  Just be prepared to open your wallet.

Personally, I think I'll keep my wallet closed and hail a cab to take me to one of the other gems in the city.

If you're the boring chain-restaurant type, or think Tropika and Hoang Loang are actually good asian restaurants, then you'll probably feel so cultured to be dinning at  The King and I.
The best way to tell if a Thai restaurant is authentic, is that there are pictures of The King!
The curries here are nothing special, and it's pretty hard to mess up spring rolls and the other drab appetizers. You really can't go wrong with the Tom Yum :)
But it's really  just another white washed, asian restaurant. Gotta cater to the average joe - "oh this curry is so spicy, I should have just gone to Red Lobster, or my other favorite, the Olive garden."
You'll probably find tastier, savory Thai dishes at Nomchokwilai , Bua Thai, even the cute little place in Whitemud Crossing. They have better quality food, lower prices, and they actually serve sticky rice!

Tom Yam, you spiced up my night and my life! The broth was exactly what I was yearning for as I fight my way through a tickle in my throat. And the mushrooms, carrots, cauliflower and beans added a crunch and a hearty dose of veggies.

Dining with a gal pal who isn't so adventurous with her food, we also ordered ginger beef and sweet and sour noodles. I will never ever order these again here. I have a feeling these are the types of dishes that are ordered by those who also frequent Chinese style buffets - of who, I am not. She, on the other hand, really seemed to enjoy both dishes. So perhaps there's a market for them. If you do go down the ginger beef route, the big chunks of ginger pack a strong punch - yum!

But where its truly at? TOM YAM all the way. The sweet, sour and spicy flavours give me much confidence in The King & I's ability to rock out an authentically Thai plate!

The King & I is the first Thai restaurant I have ever been to. The inside of the restaurant was beautiful with marble tables and impressive art hanging on the walls. It looked a bit like a rich mansion. I came here dressed super casual (jeans and a t-shirt), and I felt very out-of-place. Virtually all the customers were dressed nice or came straight from work, so they were definitely a step up from casual attire.

I thought the menu had good variety--many different plates of veggies, chicken, or beef. I had an iced tea & milk to drink that was awesome and spring rolls that were full of deep-fried tastiness. The person I was with insisted on getting coconut rice, that I had a hard time getting down. I like coconut, but coconut rice does not appeal to my tastebuds. We had this with a plate of chicken and veggies. It wasn't bad--nothing amazing. Actually, it was fairly bland and plain--kind of a waste of money really.

This place just didn't impress me that much at all. It's a lot of fanciness with mediocre food--I won't be going back.

My wife an I had dinner here and is was terrible.  The first seafood dish my wife ordered was off, not cooked enough and had to be returned.  The second dish was a beef dish with asparagus.  The asparagus were like hard little sticks and the beef was bland and tough.  There was no flavor in the dish....she could no eat it.  Mine was a beef dish as well and even though the preparation was different the beef was the same poor quality strips with no flavor and tough.  We had to leave there and finish dinner at Chiantis across the street.  It has none of the original finesse, quality or flavor of the original restaurant of years ago.

I do like the food here but I am not exactly sold on it. I have never eaten in so I can't comment on the service or any of the decor but I have ordered take out so I can talk about the food.

The food is good but I find that some of the things don't have much flavor and some others taste the same. I really enjoy their spring rolls and peppercorn chicken wraps. The coconut prawns are really good too. I haven't been able to try everything yet so I am going to hold back on it's rating right now.

Mediocre Thai food; not really tasty, not spicy at all, and quite expensive.

    Delicious dinner with coworkers.

Tom Yam Kung (prawn soup) was really good. Of the appetizers my favourite was the Salad Rolls - reminiscent of a Vietnamese spring roll (both are not fried).

All of our entrees were great - ginger beef, pad thai (with tamarind sauce), duck green curry, and prawn green curry.

Unfortunately we were so stuffed there was no room for dessert.

I went here on a first date and thought it was a classy place and quite busy yet still intimate. The food was exquisite - points scored for the guy who chose the place (although the date later bombed; at least he picked up the bill). The flavours were exotic and distinct. We started with the salad rolls which came with an amazing chili sauce. Then we shared a few dishes: pad thai (but of course), tarmarind prawns, and seafood curry. It was all fabulous. The main dishes were between $15 and $20 each and appetizers were $10. With a bottle of good wine the dinner was over $100 including tip. The ambiance, while full to capacity on a Saturday night, was still very pleasant, with background ambient music and thai decor that was not garish. I would definitely come back here - just with a different guy!

This restaurant has been voted one of Edmonton's best Thai restaurants by See magazine several years in row, and I can see why. The food here is delicious. My husband and I came in at 5pm, and we were the only customers there. After 5:30 groups of people began to pour in. The greeting person sat us at the table by the window and handed us the menus. I have noticed that the restaurant is decorated with mostly red colors which gave the place an elegant and clean look. Upon the first glance at the menu, I was astonished to see that most entrees are priced $20 and up. Rave reviews in local newspapers never mentioned anything about this place serving the food at the prices of upscale restaurants. So I reached for specials menu and ended up ordering marinated chicken breasts with roasted eggplant and basil on a bed of French fries. My husband chose to order Yam Yai salad (noodles, BBQ pork and shrimp in honey sesame dressing) and Phuket Fisherman soup. To make our wait a bit more pleasant, we also ordered two cups of coffee latte which turned out to be strong, sweet and plain amazing. When our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the dishes. After splitting the soup and the salad, we already felt full and happy, and we haven't even touched the chicken and eggplant dish! It was fresh, with lots of spices and a generous amount of sauce. We could really taste the basil which gave the dish balanced flavor. Finger licking good is what I would call this dish. Our server was very pleasant and polite. The tab for two people was $50 and I believe it was money well spent. The King and I has every chance of becoming my favorite Thai restaurant.
