Delicious! Really not a huge fan of the Keg these days, usually opt for Hy's instead. But I was taken out on my last night in Ottawa and man oh man, was it ever a solid meal.

The steak was perfectly cooked, rare-medium rare, and perfectly seasoned. The double baked potato was a flavour bomb as always...really nothing to complain about.

Maybe it's just the Keg in Vancouver that was slacking, but if I ever find myself back in Ottawa, I know where to go for a solid steak dinner.

Typical Keg. Decent food and staff.
This is a great location in Ottawa. It is in the Byward Market, and close to all the government buildings and Rideau Centre.

This is definitely one of the best steakhouses in Ottawa.  Probably one of the best restaurants, just in general!  That being said, I didn't think it was anything super-memorable, and I've definitely had more amazing steak elsewhere.  But that's nothing bad about this place.  Just not rock-your-world 5-star-amazing.

The Keg always seems to be super-busy, too, located in prime ByWard Market.  So plan on having a few drinks at the bar while you are waiting for your table!

When you travel with kids they seem to gravitate to chain restaurants and what they know.  Unfortunately we were travelling with them this wknd and they wanted to go to the Keg.

When you have little people, little to me when they are 12 and 14 they sometimes call the shots and it's easier to go with the flow.  Hence some of my reviews of chain restaurants.

We got there at 7pm and Ottawa was full with people this long wknd for the Tulip Festival and Victoria Long Wknd festivities.  It was packed so was every restaurant in the Byward Market.  The wait time was an hour++ for the inside and over an hour and half for the patio.  We opted to sit at a table in the bar that was open for 6.  It was us four for our dinner and a smattering of 2  people thru-out our dinner sitting there to have a drink or two, appetizer waiting for their coveted table in the proper dining areas. Nice conversation with a couple from Belleville.

    The order:

2-12oz  New Yorks (came with beets, one with potato, one with rice)
    1 Mushroom Neptune
    2 Escargot
    1 Goat Cheese app
    2 keg size Daiquris
1 bottle of Folonari Pinot Grigio
    2 Virgin Staw Daqs.

    $172.94 + $20 tip.

Everything was "just ok".  The appt, order was mistaken and we got escargot and some dip first.  Had to re-order, the right thing was there in about 15 min.  Drinks ok, the booze daqs. didn't taste much different from the Virgins supposed to be 2oz, not sure if any booze was in them.  The steaks were meh,  the beet veg boring, the rice tasted somewhat Uncle Ben's.  Our server was new for sure.  quite busy and she was having a hard time keeping up with the flow.

The food is ok, and i'm sure most would like it even me sometimes but when your away for some fun $200 on mediocre doesnt work.  My fault for not investigating more options.  Tried Tripadvisor for some go to options but I think that site is loaded with retired boring people that don't have much time or diversity on hand to really know what hip young people want.  Someone actually suggested Swiss Chalet go figure??!!

I am pleasantly surprised to be giving the Keg a 5 star...but darn it was good. I had to take a few colleagues from south of the border for dinner and they kinda need to have their daily intake of meat and potatoes. I thought I'd try this Keg.

The place was packed on a Tuesday but the service was absolutely fantastic. The server got a well deserved  thank you note the next day. She was great with recommendations and the food and booze never stopped!

The ambiance is standard 'keg style'  and the wine list is average. The calamari was absolutely delicious though. Try the double cheese dip with your bread....I wanted to buy some for home!

The steaks were perfectly cooked. Try the Oscar steak with scallops and shrimp. She was more than willing to offer the scallops/shrimp on other steaks. The ribs were delicious as well. The desert portions are massive but try the Billy Miner....its for 2...trust me.

Overall we had a fantastic evening and I think its going to be my steak place in town for now.

Anyone else find it was tooo dark????  I mean its a steak house I know but I could barely see lol

The food was great.  I had the steak which was cooked as requested.  Steak was tender and juicy.  Service was great.

Prices are what you'd expect from a steak house.

Its located in the byward market so parking is non existent, especially if you don't want to pay for it lol.  Theres a municipal parking garage near by and parking on the street but you'll have to look for it, especially hard if its during the summer and on weekends.

On the recommendation of the cute waitress at the bar I had the mushroom crab sirloin medium rare. It was perfection. The juices were flowing and my side of sweet potato fries (I wanted poutine but she said that she has never been asked for that side option but it would be better to get poutine at a chip shop) were soaking up every drop of flavor off the steak. It was a crazy delicious plate. They probably didn't have to wash my plate-it was lick your plate good.

I also had an appetizer of escargot that I tried for the first time. The flavor was good considering it was drenched in cheese and garlic and the texture of the snail wasn't slimy as I imagined it to be

The experience started off on a good note... My 3 colleagues an I were seated immediately at about 6:30pm on a wednesday.  I ordered a melbec and it came in a glass with large lipstick mark on it. I know lipstick are difficult to clean off glasses but.... Isn't this a higher end restaurant?  She quickly returned with a new glass but the expectation has fallen at that point.

I had the prime rib that was promised to be medium rare but arrived with some pink but mainly gray throughout.

I am not recommending anyone who like steak to return to this one for sure.

We were faced with a dilemma: either wait 30 minutes for a table indoors or be seated immediately but contend with the cooler temperatures of Ottawa. We opted for the latter, were quickly seated, buttoned up our jackets and readied our appetites. The Keg did not disappoint.

If you don't like beef, glorious beef then the Keg isn't really for you. Sure, you can order a salad or ribs or chicken but the main attraction is the steak.

The Keg offered a price-friendly $20 option of a salad, sirloin and potato. The waitress effectively communicated my fiancee's desire for a well-done steak and the resulting plate was just what she wanted. My medium chunk of a steak was perfectly pink, not red, not grey. The meat had little or no gristle and tasted great.

The salad and potato were acceptable sides- they did not detract from the main attraction and complemented it nicely.  Our waitress was very friendly and seemed genuinely concerned that the steak meet (meat?) our expectations.

Waited 30 minutes for our table but was well worth it. The staff was organized, precise, and certainly made you feel welcomed. Cut of meat was excellent and probably the best I've had in a long time.
