The Kathedral has a very special place in my heart, when I was a younger lad it was where I got to see my first indie show.  My friends' band was opening for Moneen and the Dismemberment Plan and at the time it was one of the pivotal moments of my life.  Looking back the significance is not nearly as great as it was then but the Kathedral is still a pretty neat place.  The Kathedral is a starting point for most bands.  On any given night you will find at least one band who are not of age or perhaps an entire lineup, which has it's strengths and pitfalls.  The advantage is that you have the opportunity to see young bands before the crushing weight of the world has fallen on top of them and the disadvantage is that while they are unburdened by the injustices of the world they are most often equally unburdened by talent which can lead to a long night.  The Kathedral is a dirty little hole where you don't really want to touch anything and you definitely don't want anything touching you. In other words it is the perfect place to watch a rock and roll show.

Battle of the Bands. Everyone who was ever into any kind of music has seen a friend's band play Battle of the Bands at the Kathedral, those "Our First Show" kinda things except they make no money from it and it's put on by a crappy company that preys on children's dreams. Phew. So it is very likely that the Kathedral holds many memories of underage drinking or all-ages shows that start in the afternoon for most Torontonians.

This should tell you that it is a hangout for the young and underage. Which is fine if you are one of them, or just a little older. They used to hold "Dark Raves" which are basically a nightmarish drug trip turned into real life. Most nights are for shows, but the couple that aren't are definitely not worth attending if you are over the age of 20.

If there is a band you like and they're playing at the Kathedral, you should definitely go -- just keep in mind that you will be searched and tossed around by the less-than-kind security guards, you will pay far too much money for your beer, and you will want to take 20 showers as soon as you leave. Also they are crazy about checking ID -- all those years of underage drinking have left them a little paranoid I guess.

There are better venues in the city, with better sound, but if you are lucky enough to see a huge band play a small show here, you'll get to be closer to them as long as you're OK with being squashed against the front of the stage.

The Kathedral is part of The Big Bop complex. I'm not really sure the whole thing behind the Big Bop, but from what I gathered it consists of The Kathedral, Reverb and Holy Joe's. I've only been the Kathedral, on the ground floor, which from what I remember looks like the house in Fight Club.. Hey there's nothing wrong with that house, especially if Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are working up a sweat fighting naked.. But sadly, no naked Brad or Ed..

I know locale clubs are suppose to have a dingy feeling to them, but I didn't think it would be so extreme. There's a bar on the far left, and then the stage is to the right of the building. There isn't any seating except for some seats near the bar.  My friend and I grabbed a few chairs and made our own seating area.

The club feels very intimate. Seeing locale acts there is a treat (that is if they are half decent). Definitely worth checking out at least once. But bring hand sanitizer and DO NOT wear white. You have been warned!
