Easily one of the best food carts in Vancouver! I've eaten almost everything off the menu and have never been dissapointed. If you enjoy smoked salmon you will be happy to know this salmon sandwich contains a thick piece of SMOKED ON CART salmon filet with perfectly seasoned coleslaw and bun.
If you enjoy fried oysters, their oyster po' boy is to die for.
They don't skim on the ingredients here. The items are all well portioned and fresh!

we stumbled upon this straight out of the skytrain station and gave it a shot.  we found out later that it is considered to be one of the best food trucks in vancouver.  expensive.

the venison burger was tender and the right amount of gamey.  flavor was natural and smoky.  the sandwich as a whole was a little dry and could have used some sauce.  also, it had a little salad mix in it.  more condiments would have added a little variety to the flavor and texture.  overall, a good burger, and a few improvements would make it great in my opinion.

My coworker was raving about the smoked salmon burger and the (vegetarian) poutine and convinced me to give the Kaboom Box a try!

I went with the Veggie burger and fries. I was a little concerned about the patty being made of rice, but it was actually really crispy and perfect on the outside! Not a huge crumbly mushy mess at all! It comes with some interesting (but tasty) coleslaw on top, which I've never encountered, but I went with it. The flavour was great! This is absolutely one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had. I think I read on the menu that it has nutritional yeast inside the patty, so you don't even need cheese!

The pricing was pretty average, the burger and side order of fries came to an even $10. They also take debit, which is nice. I usually expect to need cash handy for food carts. The service was incredibly friendly. I could tell they were really busy but they were very cheerful anyways!

I'll DEFINITELY be back. And next time I'll give the poutine a shot. Mmm!!

    Me likey likey!

T'was a cloudy day, so line-ups were non-existing, so my Venison burger and a side of poutine was in my hands quite quickly.

Fresh ingredients abound, the burger was great, but due to the weather, cooled much too fast. The poutine suffered the same fate, but those first few bites were sumptuous, with the gravy and green onions flowing over top of the fries.

I think on a cool day, it's best to go with something like fish'n'chips since they are guaranteed to be piping hot. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

The food at the Kaboom Box was so good that we decided to go by a second time while visiting Vancouver.  Today I tried the Salmon Salad and my wife had the Smoked Salmon sandwich.  The salmon that is served at the Kaboom Box is like no other.  It is smooth, plump, and juicy.  The salmon was so incredible that there is no doubt the cooks here make their food with lots of care and love what they do. The fish & chips and poutine are also worth the trip to find this friendly food cart!

I came for the hot smoked "salmwich", but quickly changed my mind when I saw the oyster po-boy. I'm a sucker for oysters - raw, breaded and fried, baked with garlic butter...it's all good to me. I scoped out the sides they offered - fries, poutine or salad, and not being much of a fry fan I went with a salad.

I dove into the po-boy and was immediately distracted by the heavy, goopy, over-powering slaw. Too much maple, too much mustard, too much sauce, too much slaw. I couldn't even taste the oysters. I scooped some of it off and continued eating, but towards the end I decided to pick out the oysters, wipe off the rest of the sauce, and eat them on their own. Much better. The oysters are high quality and obviously very fresh, not to mention perfectly-cooked. They're really not doing the seafood justice by drowning it in such an over-powering slaw (Kaboom Box chefs, take note!).

The whole wheat bun was really soft and fresh, I quite liked it. The salad was a big fat 'meh' - standard mixed greens topped with dried cranberries, slivered almonds and a run-of-the-mill balsamic vinaigrette. Not bad, but not worth the extra $$.

All in all good, but not a cart I'd hurry back to.

I always miss out on the food cart action since I don't work downtown so I was thrilled that The Kaboom Box was open on Saturdays :)

All I have to say is - poutine with mushrooms! Ahhh that is brilliant!!!
Also had the smoked salmon sandwich with their maple-mustard slaw. Fresh Local Wild indeed!

Now this is what I'm talking about...after my previous review, the owner of Kaboom, Andy Fielding actually tracked me down and messaged me, he was surprised by my review as clearly every other yelper loves kaboom, and urged me to come back with friends to try their full spread....and glad I was.

Clearly, the oysters in my first Po Boy were either off, under cooked, or some other combination of atrocities. This go around, they were crispy, crunchy, white and pillowy on the inside, and certainly lacking the jizz that made my first visit so unfortunate. We also tried the fish and chips, which had a gorgeous thin layer of tempura, they were light and flaky, the fish was soft and melted in your mouth, it was quite delicious. Also tried the salmon sandwich...it was also really tasty, I'm not huge on cooked salmon, I much prefer it raw, but I still enjoyed the sandwich.

All in all, the food was great, but the service was even better. To me, that's what makes a good business....Kaboom, well done!!!

The smoked salmon salmwich was quite the awesome sandwich. Served in between a toasted bun, a soft, smoky piece of salmon, with a maple mustard coleslaw.

Mushroom gravy smothered over perfectly crispy fries, topped with green onions?! My favourite things all together in one dish!

A very satisfying meal. Can't wait to try out their Oyster Po-Boy!

    Nice stand, good service.

Our group got one each of the salmon sandwich, the oyster po' boy and the fish and chips. The dishes were delicious but they were pretty salty and the coleslaw left something to be desired.

I would say the best of the three is probably their salmon sandwich. The combination of the bread, fried oysters and coleslaw tasted somewhat tough and nearly cut my mouth. The fish and chips was definitely oversalted but it tasted as expected. Their salmon sandwich was a nice combination of meat, bread and veggie, though.

The Kaboom Box is a food cart on Granville and Robson.  At lunch time during the week days, the line ups get quite long.  I've always passed by when I'm in a rush so I never had a chance to try it... until today!

I had the Salmon Burger had a nice smokey taste and it wasn't the least bit dry.  The sauce and coleslaw like toppings brought out the flavours in the burger very nicely.  The bun was toasted, but still soft on the inside.  I didn't end up ordering any fries or salad and found that the burger was just enough food.

The man taking my order was super friendly and hilarious.  You can tell he was happy and really enjoying himself at work.  I love seeing that.

I'll be back to sample the other goods soon.  Fried Oyster Sandwich... watch out!

Having been raised in a family that owned a restaurant, I was never a fan of the puny, freezer burned pseudo McDonald burgers.  Get real, at my dad's restaurant, I could have 8 oz of hamburger steak smothered with gravy and onions.

But as I got older and my waistline bigger, well, as a girly-girl who is always perpetually watching my waist, burgers are practially non-exisent in my diet as the fat content and pure greasiness of it all is not appealing.

But venison, hello baby, and salmon, well here's two burgers I can squeeze into my mouth (just not at the same time).  Sure, deer are cute, but they're even cuter when pounded into a burger in between a thick crusty bun.  What I really liked about the venison burger is that it actually tasted like it came off a grill, there's nothing that says  freshly grilled than a smoky flavour.  The only thing I didn't like about this burger was that it only came with some organic greens on top which quickly became soggy.  Throw in some carmelized onions, some guacamole or mushrooms and then we're talking ultimate yummy.

Okay, food carts are called "fast foods" so why in heck is the salmon cooked perfectly then in the salmwich?  Not overcooked or undercooked, but just right.  And the julienned carrots and cabbage was a nice touch.  The mayo mixture had a slight kick and was tasty.  This i could see as a big seller come tourist season.

I took my food to go and it come in what I imagined to be biogradeable containers which were not sytrofoam.

The owners are thinking of maybe bringing bison onto the menu which I would love.  They're quite open to feedback.  What about ostrich?  I never met an ostrich yet I didn't have to eat either!

Loved it!!!!!  (they used to be called "Fresh Local Wild")

The owners/workers were super friendly and helpful with all my questions. I ordered The World Famous Hot Smoked Salmon "Salmwich" $7.14

"Hot smoked on the cart, our salmon is local, wild caught, Oceanwise Certified, and some of the best fish available in Vancouver. The salmon is smoked fresh and served on a toasted whole wheat bun with a touch of spicy mayo and our house-made maple-mustard slaw."

That burger was ahhh-mazing!!  Salmon was perfectly cooked and I loved the hint of the spice with every bite!!  Delicious!!!

I also ordered the poutine on the side.  BEST POUTINE EVER!!  I loved the mushroom gravy and the green onions on top!  Fries were perfectly cooked and crispy.  Wayyy better than Fritz' fries!!!

Next time, I'm trying the Veggie Burger!

You're going to see a lot of reviews that are like "oh, it's organic" or "blah blah local blah" but I don't give a shit about that.

It's delicious.  The veggie burger (new recipe!) is so good I died a little and the poutine is as fine a poutine (simple, vegetarian-friendly, cheese and onion laden) as you'll find.

    A++ would eat again etc.

It's actually called something else now, but they are still on corner Robson/Granville so you can't miss them.

My sis opted for the smoked salmon and i tried the venison burger. Both delicious, yummy fresh bun and so fast!!! It took a little for our order to be taken but only about 5 min to serving. The service was with a smile and super friendly!

Might seem like a bit much for a burger (mine was 8$) but given I had spent about 6$ on a Blenz smoothie the day before, it was way more enjoyable.

    I heart food carts.

3.5 stars.  Tried the Salmon burger with poutine for $11 incl. tax.  Salmon burger was good - the salmon was a generous portion:  it was fresh, flavorful and grilled nicely, but a tad on the dry side.  The mustard/chili mayo sauce mixed in with the slaw on top of the salmon filet was tasty - although I still do prefer the slaw at Go Fish - because it has more acidity and complexity with the lime/cilantro flavours.  The poutine was okay:  I found the cheese curds to be tangy, and the fries golden and crisp but the gravy was a bit too rich/creamy.

Go for the burgers skip the poutine and go for a side salad instead.

Still tasty and good, worth a try!

This kickass food cart (thank you, relaxed street food bylaws!) has actually changed their name to KABOOM BOX, just in case you are confused. :)

I popped by today with boyfriend and we shared the Battered Salmon and Chips. Delicious! The fish was fresh and flavourful and the batter not too heavy. I doused it in malt vinegar and dipped it in a mix of the tartar sauce (yum!) and the housemade slaw (double yum!). Each bite was salty vinegary creamy crunchy fishy oily good! More more more. MORE.

The only thing I was a bit disappointed in were the fries - they seemed like McDonalds fries to me, too skinny and processed seeming. There was also none of the chantarelle poutine today - :C I will be back soon to try the fries again - hopefully this time drenched in gravy, cheese and mushroomy goodness!

Don't hesitate to think outside the box - or outside the office - and grab your lunch outside, in the sunshine!

Whoaaaa a food car! Wow wow wow!

I'm a fan of food cars. I ordered the venison burger, and it is pretty tasty! However, for a $8 the burger is pretty empty. I only has the venison patty and some veggies. Well, I guess it is the venison that makes it pretty pricey. But the patty was juicy and tasty. I can't really taste the difference between beef and the venison patty though... The sauce isn't that tasty... well there's not really any sauce to begin with; they only put mayo. The bun is crunchy and juicy, which is perfect!

I didn't try the fries, but they look so-so. In total I spent $8. The salmon burger is better though! The service was good too, the dude who was taking orders was friendly. If I was richer and not a stingy Asian dude, I would've tipped him, but unfortunately... :P

    Will definitely comeback someday :)

    * Continues to perform with great customer service *

I went back to try some more of their menu to be greeted by the 3 friendly guys behind the counter.  Should I call them the 3 stooges of fresh local food?  I'm not sure if that is an insult or a compliment.  In any case they are entertaining as they work the crowd.....

Today I tried the local smoked salmon sandwich with a side of locally harvested (by one of the 3 guys) chanterelle poutine.  Here is a photo of the lunch combo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The salmon was delicious.  It was very smooth and buttery and had a pleasant hint of smoke.  They thankfully have reduced the mayo level of their slaw so it didn't overpower the salmon at all.  Perhaps I got lucky today, or perhaps they heard similar feedback about it having too much mayo and have changed.  There was also a pleasant chipotle sauce which gave a bit of a kick to round out the flavour.  As you can hopefully see from this photo, the salmon was generously sliced and very fresh tasting:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The chanterelle poutine was nice, but was non-traditional.  The mushrooms were delicious, and turned into a very nice mushroom based sauce.  The cheese curds were unfortunately not squeeky though, and melted a bit too quickly.  The fries were perfectly fried and worked well.  Overall it was tasty, but didn't give the full poutine vibe.  Here is a closeup:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

    I will definitely be back.....

This has been my favourite food cart in the city by a pretty fair margin since they opened, back when they were called Fresh Local Wild.

I'm not downtown at lunchtime all that terribly often, but man oh man, the oyster po'boy is something else. There are apparently a few negative reviews here about the toughness of the bread it's served on; it's only ever made me want to chew the thing to bits in a feral four minutes, so I suppose your mileage may vary.

Despite the freezing temperatures in this bizarre winter (seriously, what is up with this weather!), Thu and I took to the streets with giddy excitement for a Fresh Local Wild lunch. We arrived just before 12, so there weren't that many people there, but were disappointed to hear the poutine wouldn't be ready for another half an hour. No matter, I still wanted to try some of their amazing sandwiches, I would just have to come back another time for the poutine.

Thu picked up the oyster po-boy, and I ordered the smoked salmon burger, both with a side of fries.  The owner was even nice enough to split up our burgers since we were planning to share, and put half in each container. The wait for the food was probably about 5 minutes, and the chefs were so friendly the whole time while we were waiting, talking to us and greeting people on the street.

For $10, the oyster po-boy is amazing. Really really amazing. It's the perfect blend of textures with a light taste that really makes the oysters sing. It was bliss, I'm not kidding! The $8 salmon burger was delicious as well, with a juicy portion of fish that falls apart easily. I think out of the two, I liked the oyster one better. Their fries are delicious and I like how crispy they are, but they're nothing amazing. I will definitely need to go back and try that poutine though.

Overall, I'd say it was well worth my money. I will be coming back here again at least once more this winter, and a few more in the Spring, but I can't wait to try their other options!

They got my order wrong...but by the time I realized, I was already home.

I had the Oyster po boy with fries (well, poutine, cuz that's what they gave me), and I gotta say, it was just okay. Perhaps it's partly because it was slightly cold by the time I walked home, but that isn't entirely it.

The deep fried oysters were wonderful, for sure, but the sandwich itself was disappointing. The bread was too tough for the sandwich to be enjoyable. The slaw inside was also okay. If it came with different bread, I would have loved it. The poutine was pretty good, can't complain!

Been here in Vancouver with the rents and bff for about a week--was waiting all week to try the food, especially the poutine!

We got 3 orders of oyster po-boys, all with a side of poutine, and one order of the sockeye salmon burger. I didn't try the salmon, but the oyster po-boys and poutine were YUM!!

The po-boy had plenty of perfectly fried, hot oysters in them, included in every bite, with a layer of cole slaw on top. It was runny / messy but veeery good. Poutine would make a good dish in of itself ($3 as a side, $5 as a whole serving). Decent gravy, crispy fries that stayed hot the entire time we were eating, and good cheese curds (though not squeaky fresh).

My parents were a little taken aback that I was so excited over a food stand, but it sure was worth it and we left very happy indeed.

Biiig bonus: the chefs were nice enough to give us a 1:1 exchange rate for US dollars. Hehe :)

My first food truck/cart/trailer experience was a very, very good one. By chance, I was walking down the street and found a bright red trailer sitting to the side. At the risk of obtaining belly worms, I ventured over to the little trailer only to find New Orleans inspired cuisine on the side of the road.

The venison burger was delicious with a bit of mixed greens and honey mustard as a companion to the venison and delicious, crusty roll. Yum! Served with fries or a salad, it is the perfect after work grab and go or a nice treat for the late night.

Keep in mind, this little trailer is open longer hours in the summer, so feel free to enjoy your delicious treats into the evening. If I lived in Vancouver, I'd probably be 500 pounds after visiting this little gem 5 days a week. Look for the trailer and have a delicious meal!

I had been waiting so long to try Fresh Local Wild, and the newly renamed Kaboom Box did not disappoint.

    Things I loved:

    * Sustainable and Ocean wise fare!

    * Locally sourced ingredients

    * Super friendly service

    * Good prices for what I would class as cafe/restaurant quality food ($11 including HST for the Oyster Po-Boy and side of Poutine)

    * Tasty, tasty, tasty! My oysters were crispy and delicious, the coleslaw creamy and my buns were indeed toasted to perfection.

    * Vegetarian mushroom gravy Poutine - squeaky cheese curds, crispy fries and a good whack of flavor.

    Food carts rule!

Theresa beat me to the review of our experience at Fresh Local Wild.  The 4 stars is for the customer service - Josh Wolfe and Andy Fielding are super friendly, engaging and just in good spirits in the cold weather.  So the Po-Boy oyster sandwich and the salmon sandwich were AMAZING and great quality.  The reason for knocking off 1-1.5 stars is that I never did get to try the chanterelle mushroom poutine.

We stopped by one day but their cart wasn't working so well, so Chef Wolfe gave us a coupon to come back.  When we did come back, we got the great sandwiches, fries and a Jones soda...but this time the poutine wouldn't be ready for another 30-45 min.  I do understand that it's a food cart and not everything on the menu can be ready at all times, but going out of my way downtown for poutine twice is probably the most patience I have for a place.

If we didn't get the great lunch deal, I think I'd still come back to Fresh Local Wild but it is quite steep to pay over $10 for lunch that you can't sit in a warm place for so it'd be a special treat.

    Try the Po-boy!

finally made it to Fresh Local Wild - I've heard a lot about this food cart and I've been very excited to try it.

This joint is the brain child of Chef Josh Wolfe, who left his executive chef position at Coast to start this venture with Andy Fielding. Both guys are committed to bringing a new perspective to street food - food that rivals restaurant quality and is environmentally conscious.

One of the coolest things I like about the concept is that their seafood is Oceanwise and all their ingredients are locally grown.

The downside is that being a street cart, there's no heated seating area, and it was freezing cold when I stopped by. The solution: take it to go.

I ordered the Hot Smoked Northern Coho Sandwich ($8) -It came with homemade coleslaw on a whole-wheat bun. It was massive. The Salmon had a smoky, almost sweet taste to it, and there was a lot of it. You can taste the difference wild salmon makes compared to farmed salmon. The texture was firm and it had a deep, rich, red color.

For $3 more you can pair your sandwich up with their Quadra Isle Chanterelle Mushroom Poutine. Ohhh... I was in poutine heaven! The gravy was fantastic, very creamy, wasn't overwhelming and it had a great texture. They use white cheddar cheese curds and they were firm and juicy. The fries were crispy and well seasoned. I love that they topped it all up with chives. It gives it an extra layer of flavour.

Overall, I really liked it! The price is a little high for street food, but I think you get your money's worth, and you have to take into account the quality of the product you're consuming. Follow them on twitter @FreshLocalWild for up-to-date information on operating hours and daily specials.

$5 Chanterelle Mushroom Poutine that is like ten steps from the bus stop? What an evil little red truck.

The poutine was not as mind blowing as I expected, but very satisfying indeed. I did not taste anything that screamed fancy mushrooms, but for the price it's pretty kick ass.

The guys serving the food were super friendly, chatting up everyone while pumping out the food expediently.

Smoked salmon sandwich with a side of poutine. Incredibly satisfying. The poutine is a little mushroomy, which I liked. Floppy fries, solid and unmelted curds, but hot enough to melt if you mix it up. The sandwich was perfect, thick cut of salmon, crunchy slaw, well chosen bread.

We had heard about this place from a couple friends on Wednesday and made it down today (Friday) to check it out.

They finish up their day at around 5pm, we got there shortly after and they were still open thankfully!

I ordered the po' boy sandwich and my bf ordered the fish and chips. We also had a lemon-lime soda. The soda was great! We got it before our food.

Sadly they were out of cheese for the poutine, but the chef saw the disappointment in my face and said he could easily give us the mushroom gravy on my fries.  He didn't charge me extra for this.

$26 for the two of us which is pretty good. We had high hopes!

Unfortunately after waiting about 10 minutes the chef turned to us and said, "I'm so sorry guys, but I'm out of propane!" (I guess the long day and the fact that they're normally closed by 5 led to the propane running out!)

We were both really really bummed, but they were so good! They gave us a free dinner for two for the next time we visit and gave us our money back too! ALL OF IT! (free soda!)

Their customer service was great! Really friendly.

Not much more to say as we haven't even tried the food! But we will soon!

Hate me if ya want, but it's nothing to write home about. Had the fish and chips and here are the cons, there is more of those. Coleslaw, weak, limp and not appetizing whatsoever. Fries were very similar to McDonalds and let's face it potatoes are dirt cheap so ya got a heap of them. The crows were happy. Now, getting to the cod, small pieces in tempura batter, did I say small cuz the two pieces of a $10 overpriced fish and chip dinner were very small. Anyhow, tried it, unsatisfied and will stick to tried and true Cockneys Fish and chips. When it comes to the food carts, this is unfortunately at the bottom of the list.

YUM...and very friendly and helpful staff.  Thank you Patrick and Matt!  I had the Po Boy fried oyster sandwich and my boyfriend had the venison burger and french fries.  Highly recommend both but especially the PoBoy - so good and the oysters were cooked perfectly....Try the fries with an extra side of maple mustard - you are in Canada, right!  Definitely writing home about this one.

Although I've given it 4 stars, it would probably be 3.5 if I could.  I work just down the street and this cart taunts me every time I walk by.  When the craving for Poutine hits, I must obey.   Bonus points for adding one of my favorite funky fungis.

I ordered an Elk burger to compliment my Poutine, only to find out, it was actually Bison or Buffalo.  No biggie.  The guys working the cart are über friendly and kept us pretty entertained during the 15-20 minute wait for our food.

Ahh tabernac!  I was disappointed with the Poutine - bland for me regardless of being meat or vegetarian.  No squeak either.  Admittedly, living by La Belle Patate has spoiled me.  The fries were delicious, but they are just a vessel for the cheesy-gravy goodness.

The burger was cooked very well; slightly rare to keep it juicy.  However, my beef (it had to be done), is that the meat to bun ratio was off.  The bun should be smaller for the size of burger you get (or maybe a bigger patty, hint hint)

By the sounds of the other reviews, seafood sammies are the way to roll.

Overall, I was content with my meal, but perhaps not the best value for your money.  Big props for keeping it sustainable.  I get the feeling this place is only going to get better with time.

first off, the people here were awesome.  they were friendly and silly and seemed happy to serve up my food.  its always nice to be in a good mood when you wait for your meal.

as for the food, i got the smoked salmon sandwich with poutine.   i really liked this a lot.  good smoke.  yummy slaw.  and the poutine...who would get plain fries?

i would definitely come here again.

This is based mostly on their poutine.  I had their po'boy.  It wasn't too bad.  Their poutine however might be the reason why Quebecers want to secede from Canada.  Seriously it was an atrocity.  I've had many a poutine in my life, and I would easily take a Burger King poutine over this.  I have never had such a bland poutine in my life.  The 'gravy' and I put it lightly was gritty and more cornstarch than anything else.  The fries were subpar at best.  Actually it says a lot when the green onions were the best part of the whole thing.

I tried this the other day, since my mother became a food network junkie I've has a fascination with food trucks and carts and the unique food that's in them. It was the end of the day so most things were sold out, certainly not complaining. The folks in the truck were friendly and charming and we  chatted while I waited for my food. I looked at the other things on the menu and resolved to come earlier next time if I liked this. I had some poutine, mmmmm, love love love the mushroom gravy, and the green onions really added something. The fries were crispier than I expected, I really devoured this one. The helping was generous, could have been warmer, but oh well. I want to go back again.
I've gone back a few times since and I LOVE their Smoked Salmon burger, so, so good. You know what else? I don't even like coleslaw, but this, I like. The guy who works there remembers me every time, so charming!

I came to try out their fried oyster po'boy because I never had it before. I also had a side of fries to go with that. I actually enjoyed the fried oyster itself and I liked the panko that was used to fry the oyster with as it was crunchy and delicious. However, I felt that they added too much cole slaw and the bread was ok at best. Fries was not bad, but I've had better fries before. I might consider trying the salmon sandwich the next time I'm around the area.

MMMMmmm!! Lovin' the chanterelle mushroom gravy poutine!! The fries are awesome! Fresh cut, real potatoes, fried before your eyes.  And the guys serving it were soooo nice! Way to get customers to come back!  Unfortunately I don't eat salmon or oyster po-boys.  And considering poutine is only a once a year event for me... I'll see you in January!
