Jade W, it is trip through a Harry Potter movie. You just have to love it!
Books piled as high as you can see, treasures lurking in every one.
The history in this store will take you through every age in time.
The staff are walking Rolodex's, they know what book is in row, 29, book# 45 down. Who needs computers for inventory! How they know this, I have no idea, although I can relate in a way, my desk to some, is not organized, but I know where everything is. I have my own personal filing system.
Give yourself the time, you might not know exactly what you want when you go in, but you will have something in your hand when you leave.
The staff here are just fabulous and you can tell they love being surrounded buy books, they live and breath them.
Happy Hunting! -

As a preschool teacher, I buy a lot of children's books at this wonderful store (and at a professional discount! Hurrah!), and I always look forward to a chance to drop in for a visit. Aside from all the treasures that may be found for the young ones (and the young at heart), this shop also offers a wide selection of adult fiction and non-fiction.
The store's owner is extremely sweet and personable, and I always enjoy chatting with her. As others have said, the store can be a bit disorganized, but if you can get past that, and don't mind doing a little bit of rooting through piles while you browse, it can be a very enjoyable experience.
I have found that, for a used book store, some of the prices are not always a bargain. To be fair, this doesn't happen often...but every now and then I'll pick up a hard cover picture book and see a price of 25 or 30 dollars, the same or more than I would pay for a new copy at a retail store. So it might pay to check prices and be a bit choosy before you head to the cash register with your stack of finds. Still, there are many good deals to be found in this friendly, charming shop, which is definitely worth a visit should you have a chance. -
Review from Laura P.
I popped back into The Jade W this week to pick up my very own copy of Moleskin's "Passion Journal". (As mentioned in my first review.) As cheesy as the title plays, I feel the $25.95 a worthy investment.
These booklets are a fantastic idea for those with the urge to archive. As a music and film junkie, I think it'll be a great apparatus in staying organized. The books take on a similar setup to the standard address book: A to Z side labels and asserted writing space for specifics. I purchased the film journal to start, and its pages alott for title, date and place of release, quotations, comments, awards, etc. Its all an easy-on-the-brain option for keeping track of notable films or otherwise! Besides film, the passion journals also accommodate wine, wellness, books, and music. I hope to invest in the music and wine versions at some point. They also come with helpful sticker notes, extra pages for notes and thoughts, a side compartment, fine leather cover and silken page markers.... all in the thoughtful Moleskin way.
The books are new on the market, and maybe available at places like Chapters, but for a downtown fix The Jade has it covered. Im pretty i lurve with this spot... its new and used combo allows some serious option.Listed in: Reading Rainbow

Review from Courtney M.

Jade W is a great place to go book hunting, just try not to mind the piles upon piles of books scattered all over the place.
Sydney, the stores proprietor has a veritable book rolodex for a mind and seems to know the location of every book in her shop, off the top of her head. I liked that when I was checking out she introduced herself. It's a much nicer way of computing someone into your system than just asking their name.
I tend to thrive off of disorganization and could while away days in bookshops but even I found the clutter at Jade W's a little daunting. How are you supposed to spy your ideal book if it's hidden at the bottom of a 4' pile? I almost couldn't see Sydney when I was checking out due to the piles of books on the counter. Sort of reminded me of something out of Harry Potter.
Be sure to check out Jade W's online. Lots of useful information whether you're a mystery fanatic or you want to know if your favorite author also published under a pseudonym.
I did manage to leave with a copy of 'Total Immersion' by Allegra Goodman and 'Novel Without A Name' by Duong Thu Huong, so overall- a pretty good book haul for a Monday.
ps- The folks at Jade W's will buy your used books as well! -
Review from Lacey H.
Raw blond wood and sun light pouring in through the many windows spurred my desire to peruse this downtown book shop. Space can make or break a store and Jade W's atmosphere is one that evokes relaxation and a desire to slowly stroll and take it all in.
The man working was sitting in a rocker, fully immersed in a book. I casually sauntered through the aisles taking in Canadian Literature, women's issue related reads, as well as a wide selection of children's lit. A kid's book about animals sneezing caught my eye and I smiled while I peeked through the pages, witnessing the sneezes of creatures big and small.
This literature haven is a special downtown shop, perfect for browsing and buying. The categories weren't at first obvious, but if you scan the shelves you'll find little signs proclaiming the genres. A treasure of a store indeed. -

I have had such nice experiences at this bookstore. On a whim I walked in one day to look for a novel. When the storekeeper approached me to ask if I was looking for anything specific, I gave her possibly the least helpful reply. Not really expecting it to do any good, I told her I was looking for something "really beautiful and maybe a bit lonely, it would be okay if it were kind of sad but it doesn't have to be." With that terrible description all she had to go off of she miraculously found me a wonderful book which I enjoyed immensely. Beautiful and melancholy, it was just what I had been wanting. Kudos to her for deciphering my request with such patience.
On subsequent trips I have had a lot of fun exploring the bursting stacks in the Jade W. I always on the lookout for good used craft books, but it is rare to find as good a selection as you will at the J.W. There is also a well stocked children's collection upstairs, great for gifting to new parents.
