TO THE WINCHESTER!
My friends and I have dubbed this Halifax landmark our go-to location when the inevitable zombie apocalypse arrives. It was the first pub I ever visited in Halifax and I have the beer selections memorized.
The food is hit and miss and so is the service, honestly. But maybe it's because I've been coming there so long that I don't even notice lapses. I enjoy the cornish pastie and the burger. The specials are usually pretty good, and of course the Granite beer is fantastic. Ringwood is my go-to brew and I'll occasionally be tempted to stray. Certain evenings just feel like a HH night. Whenever I put out the call, I inevitably have friends who will join me, especially on cold, dreary nights.
One day, maybe on the day of the zombie walk, my friends and I will grab our cricket bats and golf clubs, fake blood-up our office clothes and go grab a pint.
We've even started calling it the Winchester.Listed in: Where You'll Find Me

Finally stopped here on recommendation where the hipsters hang out.
Didn't really know about the 3 floors, we entered the middle floor instead of the bottom "pub" floor. The difference was that you need to order more food than drinks, unless you are REAL close to the bar.
Beer & wine menu is average, with more selection from Granite Brewery. The particular is very good.
the atmosphere nullified my impressions about the seat move - it's such a cool spot to hang. I'm sure the other floors are great. Shame that I don't spend more time downtown. -

The Henry House has always been one of my favourite higher end pubs in the city. You don't come here for cheap drinks or women with short skirts (although the latter is never frowned upon). The HH is all about good food and drinks in a respectable pub atmosphere where you're not trying to avoid stepping on glass or mystery spills.
Over the years, I've become a big fan of their Halifamous Ultimate Burger, so on my visit last week I wanted to get something more traditional from their menu and continued the fish cakes kick that I've been on this fall. Our orders are promptly taken by an Aussie waiter that my co-workers may have liked more than the food, if they hadn't raved so much about the fries, but I digress.
When our meals arrived I was greet my two sizable salt cod fish cakes. Golden brown and crisp on the outside, the cakes still gave way to my fork and knife without squishing, which always bothers me when this happens to a fish cake. The salt cod is, naturally, fairly salty but not in an unpleasant way, and the tasty fish is mixed thoroughly throughout the fluffy potato filling. The green tomato chow that is advertised on the menu wasn't available, and I found that the tomatillo salsa that came instead of the chow was too overpowering for the fish. Fortunately, there was a bottle of Heinz to save the day. Maybe it's unrefined, but I'm a sucker for ketchup and fish cakes.
Accompanying my fish cakes was an bowl of baked beans and brown bread. While the bread didn't seem particularly brown, it was fine, if unremarkable and served as a delivery vessel for the beans. The beans themselves had a delicious sweet onion flavour from what I would assume were caramelized onions as well as a rich earthiness from the sauce, although the beans were a tad too firm.
It was a solid lunch, and with rave reviews around the table for the food and service, and without a doubt I'll be back at the HH for food cider and general good times.Listed in: Pub Grub

I was here about a month ago for a workshop and stayed out of town but when we came in for a meal our hosts brought us to this pub. We loved it and would come back in a heartbeat.
The burger was great and the stout from Montreal was fantastic. We'll be back! -

I used to love this restaurant, but every time I go now I am more and more disappointed. The portion sizes continue to get smaller and smaller. It is always overcrowded. If you go for brunch and ask for your eggs a specific way they will quickly inform you that they only cook eggs one way, medium. The steak with the steak and eggs is about 2 inches by 2 inches in size. On one occasion four of us were crammed at a table meant for 2 and we were told we couldn't have the free bigger table beside us unless we had one more person... there was barely room for our food on the table. Another time I asked for a reservation, they don't do reservations, which is fine. I was told not to worry about it though, just show up and there would definitely be seating, there was not, but there were tables with reserved signs on them for someone else. Another time there was a hornet infestation on their patio. Another time my friends and I were told if we didn't get another appetizer we would have to move to the back of the restaurant to fulfill their license agreement, even though we told them before they seated us that one of us wouldn't be eating. It is a shame, because the food can be really good there and it's a great spot to meet with friends or family in an area with little options for affordable food.

This is a review for the upstairs cocktail bar. They know what they are doing, and honestly, i don't know why it isn't full (I suppose it might have something to do with the price of the cocktails). The barstaff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the drinks are really well made. The decor is dark wood paneling and a fireplace, the lights are low, and it is the perfect place for a date or to catch up with friends.

So little henry house. Your atmosphere and culture is tres cool. I must give you that. That is simply why you don't have a 2 rating.
Because your service is terribly atrocious. The last couple times I've eaten at the house our waitress/waiter has been anything but friendly. Even a half smile, I'd take that. Not once did they ask if we needed a refill on our bevvies. It took forever for our table to be cleaned and for us to get served in the first place. When all was said and done, we also had to ask for the bill, twice. Epic fail.
Aside from that. You have to give them street cred for their 3 level restoration into a restaurant, pub, and private dining area. Built in 1834? Hello ghosts. In combination with that, they have a solid stack of granite brewery ales.
In the summer, this place is great to grab a beer or 5 with friends on the side patio. Food wise? It's decent. They have a pretty good veggie panini and a semi-neat burger.
I'm not jumping at the bit to go here. But I'll tag along. -

Henry House is one of my favourite pubs in the city. It has a ton of character and two distinct levels, the main floor is more restaurant style, while the downstairs has a cozy pub style atmosphere. In the summer it has a lovely two tier deck on the side that catches the late afternoon sun, perfect for an after work drink.
The food here is pretty good for your standard pub food, and I enjoy that they have a rotating creme brule of the day, because it is one of my favourite desserts.
I like the unique selection of drinks here, including the ringworm beer with lime cordial, but 99% of the time I'm here I order the on tap cider. Crisp and refreshing, it always hits the spot.
The reason this spot doesn't get 5 stars is because of the service. I often find it indifferent and slow on occasion. Also, I get that you have to check ID's but when the a group of people slowly trickles in over an hour or so, is it still necessary to check the 8th persons ID when we are all clearly in our mid to late 20's? Why would we be hanging out with an 18 year old?
It's cool Henry, I'll still keep coming back, you've got a great atmosphere, good drinks, and you please just about all types.Listed in: 30 Day Challenge Lists

This was the first place my husband and I went when we landed in Halifax from the US West Coast. We got in late, and it was the only place near our hotel that didn't close before 10pm.
The food was great as an example of gastro pub food: slightly fancier than just bar food... and therefore slightly more expensive. My husband had a very good veggie wrap and I had a yummy soup. The waiter/bar tender was knowledgeable about the beer and actually gave his opinion when we asked what paired best with our food choices.
Both food and beer were slightly more expensive than I expected, and the service wasn't speedy. The atmosphere was great, though, dimly lit and very college town. -
Review from Cheryl C.
The food on the bottom floor is decent pub fare and the beer is good.
The service ranges from apathetic to openly hostile.
On one occasion we had a colleague with us who didn't have her id (28 years old) and we were told we would have to move our group upstairs, despite another table with kids near us.
We left. I've stopped going there as have many people I know. -

The Henry House is one of my go-to spots if I'm looking to have a drink with a friend to catch-up and maybe an appetizer or two. I've only had full meals there a few times and although I didn't have a horrible experience, I wasn't blown away either.
My favorite part of this restaurant is the many different atmospheres that it has. I like that each floor in the restaurant provides a different setting to suite different occasions - the patio and recently renovated third floor are my two favorites.
All and all, you can't go wrong with a visit to the Henry House - good prices, good food and good venue! -

Meh.
I found there to be nothing about Henry House that made me say "Hey, this place is great! I'll definitely be back". Its a pub. The lower level definitely has that old Brit pub feel going for it, which is kinda nice - though not a huge departure from just about every other pub in Halifax.
The beer was great (give the apricot wheat a try) the service less so. Definitely nothing warm or inviting about the service we received. He was rather gruff and seemed disinterested with providing anything beyond the delivery of our beverages (we weren't there to eat, only to have a cold drink or two).
I don't know if I'll go back. To me this was just another pub in an already long list of pubs in this city. -
Review from Ben B.
My favourite thing about the Henry House is how easy it is to convince people to go there. If you're ever stuck for a venue, or your friends are being picky, this is a crowd-pleaser. With three levels there are three different experiences that can cover all kinds of occasions: the downstairs is a low-lit Brit-pub, the middle floor is casual fine-dining, and the top floor is now a nice evening bar opened only for weekends.
While each floor offers a completely different kind of service (sometimes good, sometimes less so), the menu is the same for the main and lower floor-a combination of quirky items (black bean veggie burger) and fantastic pub standards (fish 'n chips). The drink menu is expansive and has plenty of snooty beers for those people that we all know need 'em.
The downsides? Well, first off, I've never found the service on the bottom floor to be even remotely warm-and-fuzzy. They're there just to get the job done and when it gets busy, even that perspective seems to go out the window. The other one? Well...um....the downstairs pub also tends to smell like urinal cakes which can be a bit of a mood-killer. But if you can get passed that, then you're good to go.Listed in: South Endery, Pub Crawl, Bringing Barrington Back!, Patio Season

After a long weekend of moving (lift heavy box, repeat x 10000) I was JUST. SO. HUNGRY. We needed a restaurant, and we needed one asap. Enter Henry House, conveniently located only minutes from my front door. The 3-level restaurant (plus patio) offers a different ambiance on every floor, but we just wanted to eat, and not necessarily be seen, so the cozy (and dimly-lit) basement pub served our needs perfectly. The menu has a great selection of pub food, from classic English pies, to nachos, to burgers. They've also got a great selection of beers on tap, and offer a delightful 'sampler' tray that gives you a little taste (3ozs) of six types of beers. For good food, generous portions, and a fun beer selection, Henry House is one of the best bets in the city.

I think the food here is OK to pretty good and I like the atmosphere in the basement and in the newly renovated third floor (it's gorgeous--check 'er out).
What I don't like is the passive aggressive owner who had my party moved from the basement to the second floor and then ultimately kicked us out at 6:45 PM because I didn't have my ID.
Unfortunately this experience has stuck with me more than any mediocre food I've had there. Being asked to leave mid-way through our meal because the owner thought she saw me sneaking sips of beer (how old am I supposed to be?) from my dining companion will do that, I guess.
When talking with other friends I've heard similar negative experiences when it comes to the owner and some staff. Decent food and the benefit of having Granite Brewery on tap will only get you so far. You also need to treat your patrons well so they'll want to come back. -

Need a restaurant that will please a large group of people? Need a place to take your parents? Just looking for some good ol' fashioned food? Then The Henry House is where you should be headed.
The food at The Henry House is good - not outstanding, but good. If you're in the mood for something simple, I'd recommend the fish & chips, but my favorite dish is the chicken pasta with carmelized onions. The atmosphere is cozy and makes me feel like I'm in an old-fashioned commercial for beer, and it's just an all-around mellow, likable place. -

This place is over flowing with charm and character. It breeds the aura of Halifax-- it's unique and offers a great experience.
Their menu of beers is fantastic, and they even offer a taster. This is 7 beers; dark, light, stout, etc. It's a great idea if you've not tasted locally brewed beers-- it'll leave you with a decent buzz which is never a bad thing. Also, they have a super artichoke dip-- very very good.
If you're looking for a place to have a few beer and indulge in a unique atmosphere this is the place! -

A nice little pub with a lot of character. I've only eaten in the downstairs portion of the restaurant, but I've enjoyed it every time I've been. The food is delicious. Especially of note for me are the smoked salmon sandwhich (on toasted marble rye) and the beef stew. The burger is tasty as well.
I've only been here a few times, but personally I've never experienced what I would consider poor service from the wait staff. I'm not saying it's amazing, or that they necessarily go out of their way to ensure a fantastic dining experience for their customers. But each time I've gone, they've gotten my order right, and the food has arrived hot, before I reach the point where I'm ready to eat the table, which is really all I ask. I can't say that I've never been disappointed with the quality of a meal here.Listed in: Good Eats!, Pub Style

Review from Lacey H.
Charm and character abound in this old British style pub.
The multi-level bar/restaurant allows patrons to choose from a more formal dining experience to a laid back bar area, serving drinks and grub by the fire in the basement.
For me, the Henry House is more about having a drink than dining. They serve some interesting brews created at the Granite Brewery with Maritime flavor in mind, and also have a wide selection of scotch and whiskey. In addition, they serve fairly inexpensive wine by the glass and the half-liter as well as standard bar drinks.
Last time I visited, my friends enjoyed a huge tray of nachos as well as veggie burgers. The food seemed fine, nothing extraordinary but good quality for a bar. Also, it's always nice when a pub serves a veggie burger, so they get points for that!
The Henry House is a great place to meet friends and enjoy a cozy bevie by the fire. It's great for large groups or even just for two people, enjoying a quiet nightcap. -
Review from Deanna D.
The bartender at the Propeller Brewery recommended we try this place out especailly for their beer selection. So off we went.
Cute restaurant and the pub downstairs is a great place to have drinks. We sat on the patio which was really nice but became very dark and had minimal lighting so I really couldn't see my food. The server was really friendly and attentive.
The french onion soup was great. Really flavorful with lots of melted cheese and of course the crouton. That was the best part of our meal.
The salmon served with rice and stir fried veggies was pretty dull but the fish was cooked properly. My bf had some sort of meat pie which he thought was flavorless and a bit dry. The food was moderately priced but the quality and flavor was not there.
They have a pretty large selection of draft beer which was nice. The beer flight was pretty good and really cheap.
Bottom line=
2.5 stars for the food
3.5 stars for the beer selection=
Great place for a drink, fast & friendly service but I would skip the food.Listed in: O'Canada

I want to love the Henry House so badly. I like the beer, the food's great, and the atmosphere downstairs is just so cool. But the service is so beyond inconsistent it makes it hard to love. I like it, but I don't love it. Sometimes you have the best server ever who makes everything fabulous, and sometimes you have someone who seems to wish nothing but harm upon you. And that's a shame.

I always love going to Henry House! The beer, the food, and the ambiance in general is always satisfying. Love the mixes of the draught beers and with my first visit there I was pleasantly surprised as a vegetarian to find promising looking food on the menu. Don't bother with pastas though, they're usually overcooked and oversauced. But that's silly to order at a pub anyway so I don't really fault them. Also, don't bother using the upstairs restaurant area - it's for the elderly; stick to the pub downstairs.
One reason why I just couldn't give them a full 5 stars: The downstairs will occasionally smell like urinal cakes if you sit too close to the exit. So go deeper in if you can. -

I love the selection here, and the prices. Great place to grab a few friends and hang out for some wobbly-pops, as the kids are calling it these days. Great laid back, chilled out atmosphere. Lots of local beer on tap and everything in between.
The menu is diverse as well, and most meals are under $20. I had the fish cakes and molasses beans -- better than my mother's recipe! But don't tell her I said that. -

A year ago I would have been throwing stars around this joint like a ninja. The atmosphere is still pretty awesome, the Ultimate Burger is still pretty great but the staff is either lazy or surly or both. When you stray on the menu to proper entrees things are really patchy and inconsistent. I used to go a lot but now not so much. Go for a drink, enjoy the room but eat somewhere else....they're just not trying anymore.

When heading to the Henry House I almost always avoid the main level. It feels like it's trying to overcompensate for what's going on underneath it. The downstairs at Henry House is where you want to go if you decide to give this place a try. It has a much better atmosphere and feels like an authentic pub.
If you come for the atmosphere, definitely stay for the nachos. They are probably among my favorite in the city. Tasty and stacked with toppings, they are definitely worth your time! The rest of the food is good, nothing stands out as being especially wonderful, but that's fine with me as I tend to always get the nachos.
Henry House is a great spot to meet up with friends in the south end. I wouldn't say it's a great spot to start an evening and is usually closed before you can cap a good one off, but a light duty evening with friends in the basement of the Henry House is always a good choice. -
Review from Judy C.
A pub located in a historically preserved building. There were many areas to sit from the main dining room to the pub downstairs to the outdoor patio area. The patio looked nice, but we sat in the pub as it was slightly too chilly to dine out.
Even though it was downstairs, the pub has windows that don't make it stuffy. Service was so-so, but we got what we wanted: our dinner. We started our meal with a vegetable beef soup that was a tad salty. However, the grilled haddock and fishcake with molasses baked beans as the entrées stood out as simple but delicious. The "Peculiar" ale from Granite Brewery went well with the fishcake.
A good place for a casual time with friends and a decent meal. -

This one's for you J.
So i'd like to believe that i'm one of those who can admit when they've made a mistake; judged things too harshly as it were. Henry House, I condemned you too quickly.
Now that i've frequented this spot a few more times (and had something to eat besides nachos) i've found this spot to be a lot more enjoyable. The ultimate burger is of particular note in the food department.
I also really like the draught beer options at Henry House. Unique options such as the ringwood with lime and the amber and tan (best bitter mixed with the peculiar) are both delicious!
Great ambience too especially on a Saturday night when there's live music!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Probably the best pub in Halifax, for an amazing selection of beers, as well as whiskeys. The fact that their food is absolutely incredible is a nice touch. As most of the reviews will tell you, the Henry House has two distinct parts - a more formal upstairs dining room and a more cozy pub downstairs. The same menu is available for both parts - you just can't go upstairs for drinks only because of the license.
One of the more impressive features of the Henry House is a variety of samplers for beers - they offer an assortment of micros available in a series of 3.5oz sample glasses, including Garrison and McAuslan's. They also offer the same for scotch, with tasting notes all along. As far as meals go, recently I joined some friends for dinner and everyone was impressed - chicken and leek pie, curry, bangers and mash, and steak and kidney pie were our choices, and no one was remotely disappointed. -

From the street, you just know you're going to love Henry House. This solid four-square Victorian is constructed with local stone in a style well-developed in Halifax in the 19th century. It contains three dining options: lower-level pub, main-level dining room and upper-level private dining room. I've only eaten in the pub - because I love it that much.
The Henry House pub is accessed from the side. After you descend the stairs, you enter a cheerful bright room. One side wall is graced with a large fireplace, and tables and booths are arranged throughout the room. There are at least two large oval booths that are suitable for larger groups to relax and unwind with one of Henry House's authentic beers.
The Henry House has a varied selection of tap and bottled beer. They feature six brews from the Granite Brewery as well as specialty beer blends. Try the Black and Tan - Best Bitter mixed with Keefe's Stout. Just thinking about it makes me want to ditch the computer for a outing.
After a libation or two, you'll be interested in what's coming out from the kitchen. Henry House offers mainly Maritime foods prepared from scratch in their own kitchen. Try the steak and Guinness pie - melt in your mouth good.
One of the nice things about Henry House is its location. It's close to downtown but away from the congestion that rules at the other end of Barrington St. It's also diagonal from the train and bus station, making it a perfect stop after a long trip. -

There are two parts to the Henry House. The upstairs is sort of like a regular dining area. Their foods are a bit more fancy. And then you have the downstairs which is authentically Pub-style in look and food. The pricing for the food is very fair and you get exactly what you pay for. I have been there on their brunches as well. Not my favorite in the city but they have a few unique items and the pricing is very competitive.
The staff are nice except there was a time I went in with a Vegetarian friend of mine. I wouldn't say they made fun of her directly when she asked if they had anything for Vegetarians but they made some offhanded joking remarks that made her and myself never want to come back. So the staff really need to understand that one must be sensitive to the customers and their preferences in a situation like this. And unfortunately that incident is why I'm giving them a three star rating and not a four star that I would like to give it.
But if you are not a Vegetarian and love the Pub scene, this is definitely a place to go. -

The downstairs pub at the Henry House is a nice cozy spot for dinner and a beer with friends. Serving traditional British pub food, the menu offers a variety of options, but I tend to go with the burger. When in a pub, eat pub food, that's my rule of thumb, I guess. And the burger is good - not spectacular, but good.
Local Granite Brewery beers are on tap, the Peculiar and Best Bitter being my favourites.
Servers are always friendly without the fakery common to many restaurants. A nice, unpretentious pub. -

When you walk into Henry House you know you're in for some good food. The smell alone is enough to make even the fullest person hungry. I always get excited walking into this place because I know my meal is going to be delicious.
And it is. The food here is prepared quite fast, but it always hits the spot. I haven't found a favourite item yet, but that's because I want to try everything. I like that they have created different things from the typical pub food. And I especially enjoy all the specialty beers they have.
I actually prefer to eat in the restaurant section, as opposed to the lower pub section. As soon as you walk downstairs the smell turns from tasty food to stale beer. It's too much like a basement down here in that the ceilings are low and it's kind of dark. I feel too cramped and claustrophobic down there.
I do like the building itself though. It's an old stone house, which makes the dining experience interesting and authentic. The meals are reasonably priced, so it's not specific to special occasions. I certainly enjoy going here on a regular basis. -

I'm so glad the Henry House is close to my apartment because it's exactly the type of place I want to have on hand if the desire to grab a drink after dinner comes over me. Cozy, bustling but not deafening and with a good beer list to boot. Their house line is the Granite; Henry House is actually the original brewery location. One of my favorite ways to get to know a new brewery is a tasting sampler and I recommend trying that here with Granite. On tap or in bottles you'll also find varieties of Propeller, McAuslan and Big Rock, plus many others which I haven't committed to memory. Of course you second food-shaped stomach will want in on the action, and Henry House has the answer in the form of a mountain of nachos. I am a big fan of the pineapple they throw in there, but some are not. Customize as you desire.

Great little bar with a restaurant upstairs, spent some time downstairs in the bar, very friendly bar staff who knew their beers and the area well. Enjoyed some great local brews- they have a good range on tap and some great bottled ales too. Nice atmosphere downstairs and the food smelt damn good upstairs too. Definitely worth a look if you're in town. If you're a local you know this place already...

Review from The I.
At the recommendation of our tour guide, my wife and I had lunch here recently. We both had fish and chips, which were really good including the hand-cut french fries. I had one of the specialty beers, which was excellent, and we shared a very good slice of pecan pie for dessert. The restaurant is in an historic building, which includes a cellar area, first floor room with windows, and an outside dining area. We had a great time and highly recommend this restaurant.
