Toronto, ON
The Guvernment is a Massive Club venue specialized for Concerts, raves, after hours & is truly a club for the individual who is ready to explore the 8 different rooms and take in the Music.
The music is primarily House on most nights & hip hop on Fridays, & the Music system and Lights show can not be matched by any club in Toronto. the speakers bang and the crowd really gets into the music.
Ive been to many music festival & concerts here and Ive always had a phenomenal time. Ive seen everyone from the likes of Afrojack, Benny Bennassi, Laidback Luke, Nas & Deadmau5.
Now the Guvernment is also not for Everyone the majority of the crowd on house nights are usually high on mdma and other drugs & it gets hot and crowded. However due to the ravers code everyone is relatively harmless and in the best of moods. Drugs outnumber alcohol on most nights at this venue, & personally makes for a way more chill environment .
The Guvernment has a variety of 8 rooms to explore that range from lounges with cushions to bumping dance floors to patio's such as Sky bar. Koolhau5 is a secondary venue used for large concerts which is also amazing for sound and viewing pleasure
So if you're ready to really get into the music and are open to a diversity of different party goer's i recommend you visit Guvernment it will change your scope on Partying hard
Cover usually 20-40$ depending on the night Open till 6am on house nights =P -

Always overpacked, sweaty and crazy. I've been there only 5 times or so for clubbing but my experience wasn't really pleasant. (went there countless times for concerts though - Brand New, Coldplay, etc. But that's a different story.)
The DJs are excellent, and the music is just pure quality. You just want to dance your night away to it. That is, only if you can find a decent space to dance. And the stuffy atmosphere doesn't really help either. The smoking area is overpacked as well. And it gets really hot in there during summer - even in smoking area.
I've seen my fair share of creepers and wall flowers at clubs. But this seems to be their favorite place to hang out. Or just hang... One dude was standing in the same spot the entire night with his shades and jacket on. 2 old couple were drenched in sweat making out. Some old guys standing in the middle of the club with stunned looks as they check out the ladies (did they come here to look for their daughters?) Half naked sweaty guys jumping around. The girls are above average. And they were willing to have fun. I easily found girls that I wanted to dance with.
If you love consuming illegal substances, or if you need to be on something to dance, you will always find someone selling something here. But for the love of god, don't dance with your shirt off splashing all your sweat in the entire club.
At least parking is free at Loblaw. -

This review is based on Sunday's Benny Benassi concert and not on the typical clubbing nights. Also, it's 2.5/5 stars.
I was at Guv early least year to see Steve Angello so I thought I knew what I was getting myself into. Let's just say I was completely wrong. This event was MUCH more crowded and insane than Angello's. The line to get in was so long that it circled around the club. Luckily, I told my friend to run up to the front and see if he could get us in faster..and we did! We were planning to do coat check but it was very crowded inside that it would take us the entire night to reach coat check.
We got to see Swanky Tunes and Benny Benassi perform and it was fist pumping awesome! However, what I didn't enjoy was that it was wayyyy too packed and sweaty. When I say packed I mean that it's hard to fist pump and everyones sweaty body is rubbing against you. Usually there's breathing room by the sides of the room and the bars but not Sunday night, it was insane! I sobered up pretty fast but I still enjoyed it. Fist pumpers who were REALLY enjoying themselves were obviously on drugs. I would definitely go again...hopefully it won't be as packed as the past weekend.
Some things to consider when going to Guv: buy your ticket ahead of time so you don't have to wait in the long lines (if it's a concert), you will probably lose your friends, shower immediately once you get home.Listed in: Fist Pumping Time!

Review from Noel D.
I've only been here a handful of times and it's been for specific events that I'm interested in, such as concerts. But the times I have made the trek to the Guverment are definitely few and far between.
The best experience I had with this place was a Jurassic 5 and Beatnuts show, and that was about 7-8 years ago. They don't really do events like that anymore. Most of the time I catch their listings in the paper or online it's for semi-raves with international wack DJs. This place is definitely on the club tip, so if that's your steez then you may very well love it.
It's been a long time since I've come here but I was in the building a few days ago for a Red Bull event. It was on a Thursday but the out-of-town kids were in full effect -- girls dressed as semi-prostitutes and then goofball men who are trying to mack them. I actually got hit on by four girls that night! The place is like a drug and alcohol brothel.
So maybe I don't like the vibe there, but I don't like clubs in general. As far as the actual building it's actually quite impressive. They have a decent outdoor area with a bar and lots of levels inside, so if you want to see a show you can hopefully grab a nice spot away from the dancefloor. Though I imagine a lot of these areas are for VIP types and bottle service.
As expected, the sound system is pretty massive. In fact when I was there the DJs were destroying my ears because the place was so loud. The bass was making my bones rattle. The kids seemed to love it though as they were groping each other heavily and drunkenly dancing on tables and speakers. The place wasn't rammed like it probably is on weekends so getting a drink wasn't too difficult and beer was only 6 dollars, which is surpisingly cheap for this sort of place. My bartender was lovely and really polite to me -- probably because I was one of the only gentlemen there and would say "please" and actually leave a tip.
Bouncers were assholes. You get frisked when you walk in.
Side note: the movie Half-Baked was filmed here. -

I'm old and don't go to the Guv anymore but I was reading the reviews on this place and just can't understand why there is so many negative reviews.
This place is not a normal bar you go to and hang out with friends. The Guv is a place for listening to house music and partying until the early morning. If are into that seen then you would have to agree that this is the only club you would go to. The fact that this place has been going strong 15+ years and other great clubs like Turbo and System Soundbar closed down shows you that this is a top notch club. At one point I believe this club was rated Number 5 or 6 in the world.
If you are looking for a night to really party and have storeys to tell or talk about with your friends then go here - you wont be disappointed. If you are looking to have a beer and shoot the shit with your friends this is not the place.
Yes - I costs way more than you want to pay to get in
Yes - It is super packed with people inside - that's part of the experience
Yes - Water costs allot of money
Yes - The washrooms are terrible
Yes - There are some weird people hanging around - also part of the experience
Yes - You will stop going here because Sunday just isn't worth it anymore -

The Guvernment is Dante's Eighth Circle of Hell. Expensive drinks, overpacked, sweaty, and stuffed to the gills with college kids loaded on the substances that college kids do. (Though we can't hate on that, we were all in college once, too). Still, take all those factors and it leads to a shitty time. I was here to see Royksopp, though I use the term "see" lightly; I didn't see a second of the concert because there was nowhere to stand and see anything. It's a horrible place for a concert, especially if there's a full house, because the floor isn't graduated so that you can't see over the people in front of you. This place is certainly more suited towards DJ acts where "seeing" the performer isn't really that big of a deal. I almost got into a fistfight with some random girl here -- the crowd is *that* hostile. Bad, bad juju here.
The bouncers are dicks, the douche quotient is high, and if you EVER EVER EVER see me at this place again, you have every right to have me committed to a mental institution, because I'd have to be motherfucking crazy to ever come here again.Listed in: One Star Washouts

Review from Fabio N.
Toronto, ON
Before reading my review, please take a long hard look at the people who have a positive opinion (4-5 stars) of this place. See what they value in a place like this.
See any trends? I thought so.
The Guvernment is the place where Jersey Shore-wannabes come to party. The place is huge and looks - intentionally - like a warehouse. This may fool (at first) those old enough to remember the origins of the term "house" when applied to music and the grandiosity of places like Factory 51, but the magic doesn't last long: the interior gets the worst clues in decoration from LA-decadence and MTV's Cribs.
Believe me, you WILL see orange people and guidos. Actually this is like a zoo for every possible variation of douche. The Guvernment tries very hard to make the species feel at home, providing everything to simulate their natural habitat: extremely expensive booze (that they will gladly buy and pay with their parents' credit card), parking at $20, huge size and the feeling that someone with a camera will show up at any moment to make you internet-famous.
"So Fabio, what were you doing there since you hate the place so much?"
Well, I indeed had a very clear idea that I would hate it even before entering, but I had a good reason: Royksopp. Someone apparently though The Guv would be a good venue for them.
You see, while Royksopp has a few very danceable tunes, you could really spend half of the show sitting down. You can't really call them a "dance" act; in fact I'd say they're just a tiny bit less chilled than Air.
But Air played at the Phoenix Theatre, a perfect venue for them. There were places to sit, and you could see the stage more or less clearly from everywhere. Since The Guv is a club, it's not really designed so you can see the stage; the only options were to squeeze in front of the stage and see nothing or go upstairs and, since everybody was pressing against the railing, see nothing.
Don't get me wrong, there are a few positive things: the sound system and lighting are amazing, but that's the very least you could expect from a place like this charging $25 cover. Anyway, there are smaller clubs with very good soundsystems and better live acts/DJs in Toronto. Wrongbar comes to mind - and they tend to book excellent (and much fresher) acts on a regular basis.
I don't see myself coming back to The Guvernment, except for two situations:
1. If I go seriously back to DJ-ing and they pay me a buttload of money to spin.
2. Chemical Brothers concert. Luckily they're big enough to play stadiums these days, so I really hope to never set foot again in this douche zoo.
PS: Royksopp is still amazing. I hope they play somewhere better the next time. -
Review from Aviva S.
I really dislike most of the reviews here. All quite biased.
I'm going to be objective, and from a point of a view of a person who's been there on concert night, regular nights, not on drugs, and someone who's been to most of T.O.'s clubs.
This club is amazing....FOR CERTAIN TYPES OF PEOPLE.
This is the only legitimate world-renowned Canadian club. It's not your shitty little Peter/Richmond TINY club. It's more European-style. It's very impressive, and very much worth your money.
It's HUGE, has MANY rooms with different music playing each so there's something for everyone and it's fun to check them all out. Extremely impressive light shows, go-go dancers (on a regular, not concert, night), surprisingly decent prices for alcohol considering the reputation of this place. And I love that there is so much LESS grinding here than other clubs. People are actually here to enjoy themselves and dance.
Amazing techno/electronic/trance artists from Europe visit here so always look out for that. These concert events are OFF-THE-HOOK. They are EXTREMELY crowded so that is a little offputting but the atmosphere is electric as everyone's united in their love of the artist. You have to check it out, if you're into techno/trance etc.
Now, here's the warnings. If you're not into trace/techno, go into the other rooms. There's a room with stripper poles (fun, and suprisingly not sleazy), a hip-hop room, a more top 40 room, an alternative electronic room. There will be people on drugs who are ridiculous. Ignore them. Just enjoy yourself.
They have fun stages where you can dance, and very cool outdoor smoking patios that have heating during the winter and are refreshing during the summer. The decor on these patios is GORGEOUS. And I say that as a non-smoker. Coat check's only 2.50. Two ATM machines.
You meet such interesting people and you can make friends for just the night quite quickly.
This club's $20 before 12 (defintely more for concert events) but it's worth your money IF you know how to enjoy yourself. You can't go wrong here.
It's truly the best club Toronto has. Period.
Oh and you know I"m objective if the first night I was there my coat was stolen (kind of my fault) and I still enjoyed myself and came back many many times. And to the reviewers who felt like being insulting, I am not a techno douche. I consider myself a very sweet down-to-earth girl, so thanks for assuming.
P.S. Their female go-go dancers are AWESOME.Listed in: Dance the Night Away, Concert Venues

After waiting in line for a small eternity, my friends and I got groped and had parts of our clothing removed to be sure we weren't smuggling in some contraband, An uncomfortable, but sadly necessary experience.
Here's the thing though. First kid we see when we get inside is carrying a backpack full of drugs and offering to sell us some.
I don't know where the security was when the paid dancers were being harassed by a guy angling cameras underneath their skirts, but they sure as hell weren't around when I had to scream for help repeatedly after some guy took to getting super touchy on the patio.
Fortunately, some friends saved me and we left instead of hanging out.
I would've rated this place a single star, but the bartender was super sweet and fast.
Maybe I went on a bad night, but I won't be going back again to find out. -

I *HATE* the Guv'. It's crowded, full of pretentious ignorant, drugged up thugs. It has to be a very special act to make me even consider the Guv' and even then, I'll usually pass rather than deal with all the crap.
No thanks. -
Review from Gina K.
This is literally my favorite club I've been to. Their laser show is amazing!
There is usually a long line to get in and it gets SUPER crowded, but the lasers make up for all of that. Getting in has always been sort of a hassle with the ticket windows and everything.
The Guv brings in all the big name DJs and as a New Yorker, I've taken the occasional trip up to see them. I came here for deadmau5 once and the crowd sucked so bad and was super pushy, but when I came for Markus Schulz, it wasn't bad at all. Crowd was pretty tame and into the music. Luckily, our friend got us backstage passes.
The venue itself is pretty big, and you meet all sorts of characters. They even have different rooms for different music within the club.
The bathrooms are okay, never really a big line. -
Review from Keith C.
Used to come here quite a bit when I was younger and still living in Toronto. When my friends came to Toronto from the States and I was not in town, I told them to go to the Guvernment and they loved it.
Well. The building is massive. If not for the giant Guvernment sign on the side of the building, you would think this place is a rundown factory building during the day. However, at night is when it starts getting hot.
There are multiple clubs inside to suit whatever style of music you're looking for. There is a 2 bottle minimum if you want VIP which is of course what I do nowadays. That way, I don't have to wait in line. Never actually had to wait in line back in the days either because I knew someone who worked there and could put me on the guest list. Haven't been there in a while so I don't remember how much bottles cost.
Well. The crowd was good. The music was hot and the girls were very attractive. Our waitress was really nice and checked up on us pretty frequently to pour us drinks. We ended up leaving around 4:30 am because we had all drank way too much and it was just that time where we could not party any longer. Will plan on hitting up this place whenever I come back into town. -
Review from Stacie F.
WOW! Never have I hated a place more than I hated Guvernment. Too bad it was NYE, we came from out of town and someone recommended we go here.
My friends and I pre-purchased our tickets for $30. Good thing because they were $60 at the door. Then coat check was another $5. Water-down drinks $11. And did I mention that you can't run a tab and all the ATM's don't work. Important to know.
Next, the place was sooooo packed. The staff were total jerks. Everyone there seemed to be on ecstasy or falling down drunk. And I am 99% sure I got a contact buzz from all of the weed that was being smoked inside.
Basically, this place is just awful. -
Review from Kaiping S.
great open dance floor area with tables surrounding it. rooftop was open but had snow on ground and was cold so nobody was up there, but it looks like a dope spot for summer/fall. big ups for all of that.
now if you're looking to party with ONLY punjabis (and younger punjabi girls), be sure to come on a friday night. was recommended this place by dudes who came here during their undergrad days and other grimy/unsavory characters of note in my life so i figured i would have to check it out.
but i'm not mad at the indos, i am mad at the fact that this place cost 30 to get in. i love toronto, its people, the diversity there, and the fact that ppl of different ethnic backgrounds actually hang out with one another, but yo toronto is not SF/LA/NY/Vegas. don't u dare charge 30 to get into a has-been club on a friday night. what's even worse is when we inquired about bottle service, the dude doing guestlist said we'd still have to pay the 30 cover anyway. never heard of any club that ever does that. may also be the fact that the indos i came with were not punjabs and we were clearly not locals.
i can def see it being a great time if ur trying to get real grimy with punjabis of a younger age on friday nights, can't speak to other nights. the venue is still nice tho. -
Review from InfodivaMLIS B.
This club is HUGE. I love the different levels and themes of the rooms. My favorite area is the Roof. You have to ascend via a maze of staircases.
The first level is the largest area and stage. It is the next 2-3 levels that are tricky. The variety of music is excellent also. Salsa, Island , Dancehall, House, Hip Hop, Dance you name it.
More than a club it is an adventure. I love the "White Party" I went to hereListed in: Canada Eh?

Supposedly the sound system here is only 1 of the 4 in the entire world that is all computer driven and let me tell you.. I felt the bass go boom!
If you are a die hard partier, you haven't partied until you've partied here, I stayed here until 10:30AM...
There are 8 other rooms/lounges that play other music. One of the rooms (I believe the Orange room) was REALLY trippy. Good place to just relax and chill your mind.
Definitely gotta check out this place before it goes away (let's hope not!)Listed in: Party like a rockstar

To reduce confusion, you should be aware that "The Guvernment" is a club which is a part of Guvernment Entertainment Complex which engulfs Kool Haus, Orange Room, Sky Bar and at least one more small club.
On to the club itself, this is one of the best venues I have been to in any North American city, from TO to SFO to Boston, Montreal and even NYC! The sound system is amazing, and very clear. While this also depends on the DJ, you can at least be assured that the setup has potential (fully utilized by Markus Schulz during my last visit).
The second floor deck overlooking the huge dance-floor/DJ is almost perfectly done. It is the perfect place to take a break away from the dance floor without overcrowding the bar.
Additionally, the laser setup and fog machine are pretty cool. My only suggestion is to bring some shades if you are going to be there for a while!
The DJ lineup is often impressive and the place stays crowded through the night.
The cons include the fact that it is isolated and it is not too close to public transportation. Within the club itself, some waste containers would prevent people from tripping over empty water bottles. -

ok, let me paint you the picture.
You arrive at about 1-2am and the line is wrapped around he side of the building. you wonder if you should schmooze the bouncer or just suck it up and wait. You decide to wait as the line seems to be going fast. The line DOES fgo fast. within 15 minutes your in and you didnt' even have to talk to too many creepy randoms while at it.
Once inside its full of people on illicit substances, packed bodies, ridiculous warehouse -rave scene that you remember when raves were cool.
You shmooze your way up to the less crowded behind-the-velvet-rope area and you can breathe. But only for a moment and then you will yourself back into the crowd because that seems to be "the thing to do."
you emerge at 6 am and realize this after hours club really does go on all night. You dont' know whether to go for breakfast or just to take the cab who is eyeing you and go home.
The cab wins.
If you're into the rave scene, which my dance-all-ngiht company was, you will love it. Myself? I don't need to be in a sea of sweaty, drugged-out people until morning. -

I went here on a relatively quite night. Didn't encounter anyone on drugs but still hated the place.
The atmosphere just feels stuck up, and pretentious.
The staff were rude. There is just no need for it, yes they have a job to do, but they ultimately help create the atmosphere here. -

I haven't been to Guvernment in over a year.
I went last weekend. . and now I remember why I haven't gone!
Firstly it was $20 to get in. The line moved quickly but it was only because we were on Guestlist. People not on Guestlist waited a lonngg time to get inside.
Secondly, they changed the entire club! The inside is not how it used to be.
There is no dress code. And anything goes it seems like...
ALOT of people are messed up on drugs. And its very obvious..
When someone is dancing infront of an ENORMOUS speaker that can probably blow your ear drums.. something is wrong with them..
I went for an hour. And left.
I do not like this club.
The interior is the only good thing about it.
Its huge, and decorated neat but the croud is discusting.
If you are an "e-tard/crack head" you will love it!
Oo! And.. the light show is amazing! But other than that..
dont go!

This may be the smaller than the Kool Haus (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) complex, but it still is pretty massive. Housing one of the larger dance parties on Friday and Saturday nights, it also makes do as a performance venue for bands and other acts.
Definitely upscale, you're able to hear some top-shelf DJs when they come to town as well as some really great local talent. The sound system is one of the better in the city for dance music and for what it is, and given the scale, the drinks are not priced that far out of line. Still a wee bit outrageous, but definitely not out of line.
Where I find it loses a bit is in its attempt to house live music shows. Because the same speaker layout isn't used to fill in the acoustic holes, bands tend to have a harder time making the place sound just right. A small point, but more a case of using the wrong tool for the job. This place is build for DJs, not guitar heroes. -

Impressive nightclub and music venue where the best come to party. The site of many celebrity parties hosted by such celebs as Paris Hilton, Verne Troyer (Mini-Me) and P. Diddy, the sound and light system outrank some of the best nightclubs I've been to around the world.

The place to go if you are an electronic music fan!
The Guvernment has a worlwode reputation (which I did not know beofre I went there).
Regular DJ shows are organized, and let me tell you that it is not the local DJ, indeed international DJs are the guests there (e.g. David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren)!! Of course you will pay an entrance fee around $20 (sometimes more than that) but it is worth it (again if you really lik electronic music).
The place is very impressive, with 7 rooms (I was told there were more than that, but I counted the one I have been in and the ones I saw). Only one room is dedicated to non-electro music, more specifically rnb, reggae and hip hop.
If you come with a group, the better is to have a rallying location and timing (that's what I do with my friends). The place is too huge to look for someone, plus it is kind of dark...
Ah yes and the Guvernement is one of the rare night clubs in Toronto to close at 5am!! So for sure you can maximize your entrance fee ;-)
The only drawback that I see for that place is its location. It is in the middle of nowhere on the quays.
Anyway as an electronic music lover, I highly recommend this place!! -

You really have to know what you are coming for and getting yourself into when you go to Government...
If you are in the mood for a serious fixing of House music, then enter and party till the sun rises...
If you are looking for a place to come and have bottle service and show off your trendy jeans... Probably best to stay away...
This is where you come to get down and dirty and hear some of the best DJ's in the world.
My two personal favorite shows in here were Moby and U.N.K.L.E. But I have seen Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buren, Deep Dish, Junkie XL and on and on and on... Some of them, in the same night...
The Government has great booking skills. I wish that other music festivals had the proficiency and roster that Government can get for one night of clubbing...
On those big nights there are so many options. If you have had your fill of house, move over to the Orange Room and get a dose of some crazy Drum and Bass, or to get away from it all, go up to the rooftop patio, get some air and listen to some chill tunes...
This is the place you go to for a night of music and letting loose...
The main drawback for me is the overcrowding and the washroom situation.
Because this is a big place, management gets greedy and on the big nights they defiantly go over capacity. It can get very messy and you will get sweaty...
As a result the washroom scene gets absurd... So I hope you can hold your liquor or are very patient... Other than that, it is a good time... Get there early; avoid the lines and just chill out.
This is probably one of the most honest club experiences in the city and it is defiantly unique. The sound system is flawless and the light show will keep you going strong. -

My first review on yelp and when you are saving for the first it should be special. This club made me and my friends go Damn!! Not seen something like this in NYC, SFO, Miami and I don't think LV has something of this size. To get this sized club filled with people speaks about the club itself. What I like:
Huge dance floor
Unbeatable sound system
Laser lights
and finally people dancing their ass off..
We got in at 2:30 on Saturday and were in the club till 5:30 all on Red Bull and Mark Oliver music!! There are some parts in the club where bass can get your heart pumping so much it's scary.. I agree with K.D., this has to be on your things to do list in Toronto.. -

everytime i went it's been a nightmarish experience. $50 to get in only to be almost killed by the crowd - they go overcapacity like crazy to the point where you can't move at all and people constantly push and step on your feet. i have also never seen so many people passing out unconscious - disturbing! unfortunately, it's the only club in toronto that has a decent sound systems but what's the point if you can never actually dance there - if a good dj is playing it's always overcrowded.

the experience of going to the guv is absolutely torterous... this family day i went to see dubfire - waited about an hour in line, paid $50 to get in, the place was so totally overcrowded it was horrible, people were constantly pushing and my shoes were absolutely destroyed from people constantly stepping of my feet. dubfire was absolutely amazing, but it was really impossible to enjoy youreself - way too overcrowded and the people - omg - the people - they are absolutely horrible at that place - vast majority don't care about the music at all and are there just to get messed and pick up someone up and it really creates a nasty atmosphere. last summer i went to see steve lawler and saw a chick sucking a dude off right in the middle of the dance floor !!!! the guv is disgusting and it's really depressing cuz it's the only place in toronto to regularly feature amaizng djs and to have decent sound and lights. the owners only care about making as much money as they can so they allow anything at that club and they let in waaaay to many people at a time totally going over what's legal in terms of capacity. my idea of great time in a club is when the music is great, the sound and lights are amazing and there's lot's of room to dance. sadly, currenly none of toronto's clubs offer this basic package :(
