These guys know how to make a delicious salad.  Somehow I always passed this place by when I was going to school at the U of A, and now I deeply regret that, because their salads are delicious and also much healthier than pretty much anything else you'll find on campus.  I particularly love the Sol Caesar, which is by far the best caesar salad I've ever had.

The salads here are fantastic, without a doubt. I had a Running Wild, which is a grilled chicken breast, spinach, quinoa, carrots, trail mix, chickpeas, sweet potato, boiled egg, and a light balsamic dressing. The chicken was freshly grilled, and the flavour combination worked well (although the quinoa added more texture than flavour). Service was friendly and the place is nice.

So why did I not give The Greenhouse five stars? The prices. I had an appetizer which cost $10 - it was the perfect size for a mid-afternoon snack, but a little high. A full meal salad costs from $13-$15 and if you want bread service, that is extra. Many full service restaurants have a variety of gourmet salads for that price range, with bread. It is difficult to justify spending that much in a (slightly one step above) fast food salad place. Despite how good the salad was, I could not see myself ordering one often.

However, other items on the menu intrigued me, such as the frozen yogurt and fruit, wraps, and paella rice bowls. These items are a bit lower in price, so I would be more likely to venture back to try one of them before shelling out $10-$15 on a salad.

I love salads, though have never found them suitable to be upgraded into a meal.  The Greenhouse certainly does upgrade the salad into a meal with a fine selection of salads.  They have various kinds of protein choices like boiled eggs, steak, salmon and grilled chicken.  I would suggest going for the "undecided menu".  One can really make several kinds of salad combinations here!  It's a healthy, balanced, filled with energy and more than sufficient afternoon meal.

So why the 3 stars?  I'd love to give the place 4 stars (or maybe even 5) because I've certainly not been disappointed with my experience here, however I cannot seem to justify spending $15 on a workday lunch and really haven't found their salads to have such a lot of cachet.  Don't get me wrong, the salads are certainly very tasty and great but I don't understand what the price is for.  The ambience is nice, but certainly doesn't warrant that price.

I would certainly come back here and maybe even several times, but I haven't the clue as to why it costs so much.

I would say that The Greenhouse is a secret indulgence for me, but with a menu of healthy healthy treats, it's not much very indulgent, and I don't keep it particularly secret!

My favourite salad here is the Sol Caesar. It has a light but creamy caesar dressing on top of crisp greens and is loaded with bacon (the 25% naughty in a 75% nice salad, as their slogan goes). I added chicken breast, too, for some additional protein, but never fear, herbivores! Tofu can be substituted into any salad.

And if you aren't inspired by a healthy and delicious meal, I'll let you in on what is indulgent about The Greenhouse: the handsome servers! Their ultra-friendly service and mega-watt smiles are worth the price of the salad alone.

The greenhouse is a great university area gem. If you're looking for a healthier meal amongst the calorie laden selections at other restaurants and fast food establishes, then this is the place for you. They offer a wide variety of unique salads, with a selection of proteins (including tofu), and the build your own option is available as well. They also have a couple pasta selections, and daily soups as well that boast unique flavour combinations. The food is delicious, and the caloric information posted is very helpful too. You can tell that the owners take pride in their food, and the customer service here is great... I walked in a couple minutes after the kitchen closed one evening, and they still let me place my order.
Admittedly the prices are a bit steep for what you get, but if you're trying to stay on track with a healthier lifestyle, it's a great little restaurant to go to.

I really love this place.  It's the perfect meal without any guilt.  You know exactly what you are eating and how many calories is in everything.  And most importantly the food tastes great and is locally owned.

Fantastic Healthy Fast Food. Locally run and owned, this Salad Bar is a hidden gem amongst the crappy greasy places that serve food in and around the University. The portions are large and price is great. The co-owners will most likely serve you so there is heart behind each order taken and served. And the kicker is almost all meals can accommodate a Gluten Free lifestyle. Celiac Friendly!

Okay, this place is like going to confession for me.  Every once in a while, if I need to grab something quick out, I snub the Wendy's up the block and have a large salad at the Greenhouse instead.  The fact that I'm paying $15.00 for rabbit food only appeals more to the Catholic in me.  Just like receiving absolution, I manage to feel much better about myself after I leave.  I've done my penance for the evil of coveting meat and cheese.

To be honest, the salads here are really good and if you don't like the set items on the menu, you can make up your own from over 30 ingredients.  Basically, the Undecided option lets you choose one of a dozen protein options and then it's onto leaves, dressing, veggies, egg, cheeses, beans and croutons.  I almost always go undecided.  The cold beverage selection also seems to favour Glaceau Vitamin Water, so I can add a $3.00 water and shout: "Look at me, God; it's water and vitamins, not sugary pop!"

I like that I can have Smoked Salmon at no extra charge.  The chicken, sirloin, salmon, scallops and tofu are cooked to order.  The greens have snap and you can have a whole hardboiled egg to boost the protein count if you're into that sort of thing.  There are probably 15 different dressings.  Did I mention these salads are really good?

So for the price of two Baconator combo meals, I get to go home feeling smug about not contributing to the obesity problem.

This Greenhouse is a new addition to Edmonton's growing Green Scene. It has been open since October 2nd, and according to one of the owners, things have been busy! They are located in a great spot, right across the street from the University and the U of A Hospital and in the always busy Strathcona area.

I have been looking at the Greenhouse sign every time I go to work for what seems like the last couple months and I have been waiting every so patiently for the day they opened! I took the first opportunity I had to get down there and my first impression is that it was worth the wait. The menu is compact but offers something for everyone. Their salads feature tastes from around the world including Jerk Chicken, an Asian Soba Salad, Cajun Tofu, and a classic Italian Bocconcini. Calories are also clearly listed below each item, except in the case of the "Undecided" salad which you build yourself from their choices of protein, greens and dressing. I decided to try the salad at the top of the menu called the Running Wild. I ordered a large size and the total came to $13.13.

The salad took about 8 minutes to prepare, so I would not call this "fast" food, but "faster" food than most restaurants. Everything was prepared fresh and put into a cardboard box to go, with the chicken separate in order to keep the greens crisp and fresh.

I opened the box when I got home to split the salad with my roomie. The serving size was much smaller than I expected, to the point where I am honestly wondering if they accidentally gave me the regular size instead. Either way, we split what was there and it was all delicious! The chicken was perfectly cooked and compliment the hard boiled egg, quinoa, trail mix, spinach, and grilled sweet potato with roasted garlic balsamic dressing. It was a perfect salad. We just wished there was more of it!

I think this place would be great for a lunch stop or a snack after a work out. I am especially excited that this is right across the street from my work as well! I am looking forward to trying it out again!

Don't get me wrong ladies, the Greenhouse definitely has some great salads. Probably some of the best in Edmonton, although I've probably eaten two salads in town that weren't made at a relative's house.

But as a man, I just can't justify $13 on a freakin' salad. That just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it's because salads just don't fill me up at all so I don't feel like I'm getting my money's worth. You could get some kick ass gourmet burgers for that kind of money!

You'll definitely love this place if you're a woman, I can count on that.

YUMMMMM!!!!!! I love love love this place! I wish I could afford to eat here everyday. I get the brainfood salad, and sometimes sub out the salmon for steak, delicious! And the combo appetizer salad with a soup is the perfect amount of food!

The only thing is that it's a little bit expensive, but seriously so worth it! It's owned by young people, prob in their late 20s I'd say, and they have a smile on there face everytime I see them. Great service! Great food!

    GO THERE!

    I am in love!

My boyfriend, my mom and I went here on a Sunday afternoon and I was so impressed with the quality of the food. The owners who work here are so super meticulous and you can tell they really care about their products.

I picked the bocconcini salad. It came with bocconcini cheese, chicken, red onion and tomatoes in a balsamic reduction. My boyfriend got the "undecided" salad and made his own. My mom got the ratatouille and it was super delicious as well.

The prices are okay, not great. I felt like my salad was super small, but I was also really hungry, so I probably should have ordered the large instead of the regular.

We will definitely be going back!

My first impression of The Greenhouse was very positive.

The salads come in two sizes, regular and large. I find the regular salads to be just the right size for me. The regular sized salads run from 8 to 9 dollars. The larges run from 12 to 13 dollars.

The salad I got, brain food, was very well proportioned. The grilled salmon on top wasn't skimpy and wasn't too much given the other things in the salad. The greens were well-dressed (not too much, not too little), the apples, peppers, and greens were very fresh. And I liked the dressing, it was original and well-paired with the other flavors in the salad.

The owners are a pair of very friendly brothers.

I will definitely come here again.

I always feel bad ordering salad from a restaurant since I can easily make salad at home, but when I am on the run and need a quick bite, salad is a much better option than a burger, in my opinion. And what better place to get a salad than at a place that serves salads exclusively?
The Greenhouse is adjacent to Good Earth cafe which is great since you can come for the salad and stay for the coffee. When my husband and I came in, both places were rather busy. Students with their laptops occupied almost every single table. We managed to find a spot and then proceeded to the salad counter. The guys at the counter were very friendly and made recommendations. We were intrigued by the "two can eat for $15" sign, and so that's what we decided to order. Our $15 got us two identical salads (we chose Sleepless in Seattle) with our choice of "protein": I went for smoked salmon, while my husband chose blackened chicken. The salads took approximately 10 minutes to arrive. Once they did, and we dug in, there was no stopping us - the salads were amazing! Crisp spinach, sauteed mushrooms, red onions and red peppers topped with feta cheese and white chocolate shavings(!). My salmon was arranged in a form of flower, and tasted fresh and mildly salty. The blackened chicken my husband ordered was tender and savoury. Hands down, best restaurant salad we've ever had!

These salads are pricey, but healthy and mouth-wateringly delicious. Yams, smoked salmon, blackened chicken, and not too much dressing. Even better, they provide live entertainment: you can sit and feast while watching the steady stream of women customers blush and stumble over the menu as they attempt to place their order with the hilariously flirty owners. They really did think of everything!
