History

Established in 1846

The Regent Hotel building - as The Great George was originally named -  was erected in 1846 by James H. Downe to be sold as a combined store and dwelling.  Merchant Henry Haszard bought the building and in it housed the London House for the next ten years.  He sold everything from parasols, corsets, and boas to tea caddies, nails, and groceries.  In 1857 Mr. Haszard moved this store to Queen Street and remodeled this property into the fashionable Pavilion Hotel.  At the height of its popularity, the Pavilion had the distinction of hosting some of the delegates of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference on Union.  Over the years it has been called the City Hotel, the Davies Hotel and since 1930, the Regent Hotel.  In 1996, the property was restored and renovated to become the Inns on Great George - a prestigious four and a half star accommodation in the heart of Charlottetown's National Historic District.  In 2004, the Inns of Great George became the simply titled 'The Great George.'
