Review from Kirk F.
Most people think of the Grad House as a bar. And it is! But it's also a cafe. I've only known it as a cafe and it's pretty darn good!
The staff make some excellent crepes and it's some of the freshest food on Dalhousie's campus. The few times I've gone (mostly at the end of semesters and the summer) it was pretty quiet. I think the name may intimidate some younger students from coming - but they really should! With fresh food, delicious baked goods and a broad variety of teas and coffees, there's something for everyone.
The decor leaves a lot to be desired: seating is a weird mix of tables which don't strike me that they would work as a bar or restaurant. It's more like they had the open space and just randomly threw in tables and chairs.
Fun fact: they frequently have daily specials that they promote via their Twitter. -

The Grad House is sleek looking but the food and beer is overpriced and there simply aren't enough tables and chairs (awkward layout doesn't help). The Rickard's pitchers are "on special" for $15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2 pm -4 pm. The liquor drinks are reasonably priced at $4.50, go figure. They have a decent looking menu that includes crepes, sandwiches and pizza. I tried the chicken sandwich with cheese and onions and a "side salad". It was served on a toasty baguette (a little too crunchy) with a sparse amount of fillers. The side salad was a few bites of lettuce with some red peppers. At $9, I think you are better off going to Subway, which is kinda sad. While I wouldn't go out of your way to come here, it's one of the few places to hang out on campus. Karaoke night on Fridays can be entertaining as well as the last Tuesday of each month when they offer trivia nights.

I've eaten at the Grad House many times now because Aramark, the University Club and the Grawood don't serve anything edible on campus, plus they have a patio. I've eaten at the Creperie Mobile's market locations a lot and the food here met my expectations for the most part. The crêpes and sandwiches served are excellent, made with fresh ingredients, local baguette etc. A few times I've experienced long waits for my food (30 min plus) and yesterday the side salad was rotten, not an edible green on mine or my friend's plate. Lastly don't order the pizza because it's made on a frozen crust, in fact if it didn't have a fresh basil garnish you would have thought it was a really cheap frozen no-name brand.

Just judging from the crappy official name and institutional presence on the web (see link), Dalhousie's Grad house has a way to go. It seems to have a lot of problems "crossing the road" from its old location to its new. It is now shinny new from ceiling to hardwood floor. Beers on tap is nice and it was a great treat to find some Smokehead Isley Single Malt scotch hidden behind the bar - I mean if you can only serve cheap single malt - then this is the one to have. The food menu is limited - although the two girls in berets serving up crepes for lunch is certainly unique for Halifax. It is small and feels surprizingly crowded even when it is empty.
With a big back deck and the promise of more room opening upstairs, this place might mature over time into something worth drinking away an afternoon or two. But for now, take a pass and keep your fingers crossed for better times.
