College kids and low maintenance furniture folks unite. The Futon Store & Pineworks provide a solid offering of all sorts of futon supply!

Various coverings to suit both refined and relaxed styles (But remember -- they are, indeed, futons.) make it easy to furnish the cottage or new college apartment with an easy investment and aesthetically pleasing product.

Its the busiest towards the end of the summer, so for best results pop in a little earlier. Fine service, and its all very straightforward-- what you see is what you get. Great prices and solid futons, its the equation to satisfy easy fixings.

With such an extremely large student population in Halifax, I was surprised several years ago when I went on a futon quest that only churned up one specialty store.

In the end though, it turned out I only needed 'The Futon Store and Pineworks.' I was a little disappointed with the somewhat limited exterior cover options but my futon did end up working very well as a couch/guest bed.

I definitely recommend checking this spot out for your furniture and futon needs.

I ended up trading my futon for a bed a year after I purchased it so I can't make claims as to long-term durability. 'The Futon Store and Pineworks' also specifies on its website that all futons are fire retardant. Call my a cynic but if my bed is at risk of catching fire... aren't I already pretty SOL?

When I first moved to Toronto from Montreal, my teenaged daughters were in awe of the number of futon stores.  It seemed they rivaled doughnut shops.   You could find one every couple of blocks or so.

And so the pendulum swings completely in the other direction.  Aside from some tacky, tinny versions at Walmart, you'd be hard pressed to find any futon stores in Halifax.

Lucky us just down the street is the magical Futon Store, where you can find hand crafted frames in a number of styles, some that fold out in half width-wise and others in third  length-wise and so don't take up as much wall space.   Mattresses in three thicknesses, the finest will are even guaranteed for 10 years!

And, as if that's not enough of a reason to check them out, there is a huge assortment of covers to match your decor...whatever that might look like.

Lots of stock, so if you're in a hurry, there are a number of models you can take with you or if you've something special in mind, it can be made within a couple of weeks.

The is usually a busy spot when the students hit town. This is one of the only Futon stores I know of in the city. They do have a captive audience for sure.

Futons are pretty much a staple in my mom's home. It has served many a friend a great sleep. We have also gone though a few covers, if nothing else to change the decor on a budget, answer is futon!

Moving across the country on a budget meant leaving behind all of our furniture, which meant a lot needed to be replaced. I had a great experience dealing with this shop, where I ended up buying a custom-made futon cover for a mattress and frame we found second hand. They keep a good number of covers on hand, so you may be able to find what you want right on the shelf (at a discount), but we were looking for a specific color and size that wasn't in. No problem, as they had one custom made (in Canada, bonus) with the fabric we chose from their swatch book. A made-to-order queen sized cover in one of the cheaper fabrics cost us under $100 after taxes, suitable for me. Service was timely - I picked up our cover about a week after it was ordered. Most importantly, the product looks great and feels sturdy. All of their custom-made furniture looks really nice, too, and if I were outfitting a home with a slightly better budget, this would be a fine place to shop for solid, real wood furniture.
