Review from Adrienne S.
Toronto, ON
Note: now called "The Meat Dept". Still fabulous.
Every time I'm in the Danforth area, I make a point of stopping in. The meat here is fabulous; my husband thinks their steak is absolutely top-notch (compared to other local butchers like Cumbrae's and Rowe Farms). The meat comes from local Ontario farmers; may not be organic but definitely local. I usually buy their chicken legs (yes, I prefer dark meat!), marinated pork chops, ground beef, top sirloin steak. The last time I went, I tried one of their sandwiches - wow, it was yummy. Soft egg bread bun, arugula for a hint of peppery-ness...drool.
Other things I love: they always play cool music in the background. The staff are also sports fanatics, so capture scores on the blackboard. Very cool. And yes, the staff are very friendly here (before and after the name change).
Highly recommended! -

TFB should be called The Freaking Bomb.
This is my regular spot for clean, sustainable, humane, and pasture-raised meats. The farms they source are small Canadian farms.
I love:
* The accommodating guys behind the counter; I'm always remembered, greeted, and assisted with a smile or a joke or both.
* The marinaded cuts of chicken--the Dijon honey is a hit with our boys.
* That custom cuts are no problem: they will butterfly chicken breasts and turn boneless lamb leg into stew meat.
* Lovely in-house-made sausages.
* That you can buy great house-crafted Wasabi or Chipotle Aioli in a squeezy bottle--swoon!
TFB is the only reason to go to the Taste of the Danforth, by the way. This summer, they set up a grill outside their shop and grilled up their fantastic sausages and steak burgers. This is special just for the festival. And they served 'em up on soft yellow rolls and provided a number of toppings such as pickled banana peppers and the aforementioned aoilis.
wow
I love having conversations with the TFB guys about whatever. They invite my boys into the store (even when they're happy scootering on the sidewalk); one jokingly flirted with me by saying that he got to help me and not his co-worker-- as he always gets to help the pretty customers (hey, flattery helps!); one offered me a free half-carton of duck eggs that had been left by a farmer as a sample (he said, Here, take these home and tell me what you think).
TFB: This is a real place.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Turns out the friendly butcher is in fact friendly! I went here after work yesterday and was happily surprised by the helpfulness of the guy behind the counter.
Honestly, my four stars are tentative, because I've only tried one item, thus far. I got some mango curry(?) chicken breasts, though, and they were delicious. This place is pricier than I am used to, and i had a bit of sticker shock when I saw the two chicken breasts added up to $15(!!!). However, when I got them home I realized the two were so big they should be counted as four. Fed two for dinner last night, with pasta, and made delcious chicken sandwiches for lunch today. Really delicious sandwiches.
I'll definitely be returning to try out more delicious items on the menu.
