Hi there,
My boyfriend and I recently took up eating raw oysters. Honest to God, out of all the places in town to eat oysters (Nautical Nellies, The Oyster Bar, underneath Wharfside Eatery (not served on ice), The Fish Store is the ONLY place we go!!
Other places serve Little Wings for their "buck a shuck" or try and push the Alcohol. Little Wings shouldnt ever be on the menu, it's a very small oyster! Almost non-existent. Or serve with no ice underneath the raw oyster which can't be Foodsafe! Yuck! You have to give some credit to The Oyster Bar for their attempt to have several dipping sauces and a good piece of property situated near the Empress. They could do without Little Wings everyday tho. Nautical Nellies had a major switch over and hired completely new staff except the guy with grey hair. Must have done something wrong because he doesn't say 'hi' to us when we are there. Will never go back there again! We used to like going there but the staff that we did like are gone! Not exactly the freshest oysters there too, had to send some back. So I will pass on these restaurants for these reasons.
When my boyfriend and I go the The Fish Store it's a different experience. First off they are located on a dock so it's a good reason to go take a walk an have the freshest shucked oysters too! :) Peter and his crew of helpers greet you and they are prompt, friendly & chill, & best of all won't push any alcohol at you. Makes you feel like your having the ultimate experience with nature. Best of all, you can sit on the water to enjoy them with their awesome mignonettes! They have several kinds but
if you like food like I do, nothing tops their mignonettes. Service-9 usually busy to arrive 15 mins early ! Attitude- 10 Experience-10
To get this rating from me is a compliment and we owe to these guys. They have outdone themselves, well done! -

Well I got a pc of Cod with chips... Average.... the batter on the fish got really soft, pretty quick. It was a good pc of fish and the fries were good. the TarTar sauce was really good. There were some kinds spices laid ion there. Now four stars what the ef? well you can buy some seal treats here. Grab some herrings and you can feed the local seals, just steps from the order window. There is one with one gimped eye. There is a fat one, one with a gimped eye, and a cute little one. Just a tip... keep your head up!

After we had checked in our luggage at the Victoria Clipper for our begrudging return to the U.S. (Victoria and Vancouver Island have captured our hearts and we can't wait to return) we had a bit of time so we walked off in search of fish and chips.
Even though we thought we were going to end up at Barb's Fish and Chips, it was closed for the season. But we lucked out because next door on the pier, The Fish Store was open. In addition to take-out orders, they sell fresh fish too.
We ordered the two-piece cod and fish to split.
As we waited for our food to be prepared, a sea lion right next to the deck popped his grizzled head and torso above the waterline and stayed there treading water. Damn, but that beast's head looked just like a dog. Those eyes! Apparently, the sea lion was a regular because one of the restaurant owners came out and was able to induce the sea lion to spin around in circles by coaxing him with a piece of fish.
At $12.99, the cod may have seemed pricey, but the battered cod pieces were huge. They were very good with a nice tarter sauce. Good fries too! Of course, we didn't get the fish and chips for the coleslaw that accompanied the dish, but it was curious. While it was a pleasant and attractive blend of veggies, it contained absolutely zero mayo, cream, dressing, or vinegar. It was just...veggies.
But anyways, The Fish Store, tucked away near a cluster of houseboats, was a great find. While this is a food stand, there are several picnic tables nearby to enjoy your meal.
Dang though, the seagulls here are super aggressive. As we sat down, one huge bugger, literally the size of a large chicken or turkey, sidled right up to my tray and snagged a fry! It squawked with indignation when I tried to brush it away with my arm. Pushy! -

Looking for fish and chips last night and ended up in line at "Barb's" next door on the warf, a woman walked up and said to the lady in front of us, "Oh, not here, there!" So being the busy body I am I followed them to the Fish Store and thank goodness! My husband had the fish and chips adn I had the Halibut and prawn fritters both were great and mine had a REAL salad (!) with baby lettuce, pepinos, cucs, radish and carrot! PS. the stirfry they were making for employee dinner looked great, too! Wish I could have tried it.
Specialties
Since 1985 the fish store has delivered the freshest local seafood available. Since 2009 the current owners, Peter and Colleen have embraced that philosophy and taken it even further. We are proud to say we take the sustainability of our oceans seriously, and from locally grown Shellfish to wild West Coast Salmon or Halibut our entire store is endorsed as 'Ocean Wise' through the Vancouver Aquarium. In 2010 we said 'why have all this wonderful seafood here at our fingertips, and not cook it' And so our menu was born: large flour tortillas filled with fresh sushi rice, seafood and sauces; fish tacos with house made smoked tomato salsa and a variety of local fish; local oysters on the half shell; live crab steamed to order; curried mussels; house smoked fish, all ocean wise, all sustainable. In December 2011 we installed a dedicated Gluten Free fryer, and now offer a GF menu, including GF fish and chips.
