Coming from Toronto, with many great fish & seafood shops around town and moving to Halifax - right on the ocean, I definitely expected to find many more fresh fish sellers about. Apparently, most fishermen actually export their wares. Thank goodness for Peter and the crew at the Halifax Farmers Market every Saturday.
The fish is always fresh -they can even tell you who caught it and when it came ashore. It's no wonder there's always a crowd. And the best thing with really freshly caught fish...it's always a surprise as to what's on hand...aside from the standard awesome giant scallops, gorgeous salmon steaks and fillets, halibut, cod...well then there's shark steak, tuna and many more surprises.
If that's not enough, then you haven't tried the smoked fishes from St Mary's River Smokehouses...but that's another review. -

I haven't bought fish here to take home, but I have tried the fish and chips twice. It was delicious both times! A one piece fish and chips is only $8.50 and a two piece is $10.50 and you get a good amount of chips. The fish pieces are HUGE and both times I have made two meals of it. My friends both got the lobster roll which is not cheap - somewhere around $14+ - but there is a good amount of lobster on a long roll. They put a lot of mayo sauce on it, so if that is not your thing, beware. They also do a combo of a bowl of chowder and half a lobster roll which is tempting.
I have to dock them a star due to the picture which indicates they sell shark meat- shark is not sustainable to fish and I don't like supporting places that sell it. No more fish and chips for me at the Fish Shop :(.Listed in: April 2012 - The Underdogs

Working close to The Fish Shop means working close to an awesome lunch of fish and chips. I've been twice now at lunch and have ordered the two piece fish and chips both times.
The service is quick and friendly. The batter is slightly crispy and gets out of the way. The fish is very high quality, as I'd expect for a fish shop selling fresh, local seafood. On top of the wonderful fish, the chips are great. They're fried well and tossed in salt and fresh cracked black pepper which I love.
I would definitely recommend The Fish Shop, not only for its fresh seafood, but also as a lunch option. I'm happy to have this close to the office and home!
