    Review for Afternoon High Tea.

A delicious slice of 'Britishness' in T.O.

A number of my friends and I went for high tea. There was a group of 11 of us.

The atmosphere is lovely, extremely relaxed and the decor is stunning. The table was beautiful, china tea cups as one would expect. To start with the group were served toasted crumpets and berries. My friend and I are gluten free so we had a bowl of mixed berries and honey dressing, it was lovely.

There is a selection of 12 teas, we were given a pot of each to try. Normally you order one per person. I tried several teas, I am an Earl Grey girl but I have to say the 1908 and cherry tea were amazing.

We then had sandwiches which included smoked salmon, lobster and a strawberry, goats cheese and balsamic.

The rest of the group had scones, jam and devonshire clotted cream and cakes. My only (slight) disappointment was that there was not a GF scone option, however we were offered dessert and we both chose creme brulee. Can I just say wow, I think I will dream of this forever! We could have the flourless chocolate cake, which came out on the beautiful silver cake stands and as with before...simply amazing.

The service was fantastic and our tea was accompanied by acoustic guitar.

All in all it was decadent and I really enjoyed the experience.

Dropped in one Saturday night after dinner at The Keg. Maybe part of my experience was the exceptional service we experienced at The Keg, but I was NOT impressed with the Fairmont Royal York. All ambiance, and no service.

My scotch glass was empty for quite a while and the server didn't notice. Staring at the server (well, glaring, eventually) failed to get his attention for an obscene length of time. After we were finally able to order coffee, we experienced the same challenge again with trying to get the bill. From what I could see this server was taking care of just three tables and couldn't manage.

Other basic rules of service were neglected as well. When someone pays with cash, you give them change in denominations which make it easy for them to give you a tip. In this particular instance, however, no tip was warranted.

One can always count on the The Fairmont to be a decent place to stay.  The rates for the holidays were perfect (sub $150 per room) and the rooms were very nice for such an old building.

Check-in sucked a bit... we reserved 3 rooms earlier in the day for same day arrival... when we got there, they only had one room in their system.  Not cool... they had some new girl at the front desk that got a reaming from my wife and I (sorry!)... but all said and done, the whole trip was a nice one.

    I'd go back...

    Old, stodgy, overworked.

After a weekend of bliss saying at The Drake Toronto, we ended up at the Fairmont due to a flight issue.

I'm shocked by the disrepair and overall state of this hotel.  Once you are past the stately grandeur of the lobby, you step into well-worn elevators that lead to dated, musty hallways that lead to unbelievably run down rooms.

It's not just a question of style. The carpet is at least 20 years old, the fabrics are peeling off the furniture (also true in the Library Bar) and the wallpaper shows water damage and is peeling in places.

The front desk was honest with me when I inquired regarding other rooms. They said that their last renovations was close to 15 years ago and the floor I was on would have been last renovated prior to that  Yeah, no kidding!!  I'll post photos.

I guess if you like the mis-matched floral look and crave musty with a dash of dirty carpet, then this place is for you.  Otherwise, there are many big and small cool hotels in Toronto. Avoid this one.

The Fairmount. I always wanted to stay here one night and dream finally came true. It's a pretty sweet hotel with high ceilings. Gorgeous main lobby with restaurants, business/faxing centers and other shops inside. Tons of cabs wait around here, so it's easy to find a ride or just cross the street and you will find yourself at union station, take the TTC, GO bus or GO trains. Very convenient.

We got an executive room. It was smaller then I had thought but I guess all the PH suites are taking the space haha. Nice comfy large king bed. Medium sized flat screen tv. The bathroom was average. Very clean and white. The room temp was always moderate. Never felt too warm or cold. The snack bar under the cabinet was cute! I ate one of the chocolate bars and Pringles haha.

I would def come here again. It's really old but has old school glam to it.

    9/27/2011 1 Check-in Here

This hotel is centrally located (Union Station) and is always very busy with conferences, group meetings, weddings and people passing by via metro station. However, this hotel has its charm - the décor is very grand and Titanic-era-ish.

The lobby can be busy at times, but I have never had a longer-than-usual wait time for check-in.

Check-in is always a pleasure. There is a separate check-in line for Fairmont's President Club members which I find can be just as long as the non-member check-in. This is probably due to the fact that anyone can sign to be a member (you don't have to stay a million times to get privileges, just go on-line and sign up). I am a Platinum member and the line this past Friday was very short. The gentleman was very kind and asked me if I had luggage and directed me to the East elevators. Fast and efficient with light-hearted banter.

    Room Number 6-267.

There are many floors in this huge hotel and this time I stayed on the 6th. My room had a perfume-y smell which I attributed to the air freshener. First impressions: clean, compact but comfortable that included all the basic amenities of mini-bar, working desk, sitting chair, ironing board, and television. Signature expensive items such as bottled water for $5 and overnight kit (toothbrush and toothpaste) at $12.95!!

Bathroom was small, but clean. Hairdryer is in a bag (5 star). My only beef with a basic room is it does not include slippers, but 2 bathrobes are provided. The Royal York hotel carries Miller Harris products which I love - they are from London and the scents are very fresh: citrus-y and woodsy all at the same time.

    Noise Level.

I could definitely hear people walk by, doors banging and since my room was close to the elevators, noisier than I would have liked. Since I was here for one night only, it was not an issue, however, when making reservations, be sure to request for a quiet room (or away from the elevators).

    Extras.

As a Fairmont member, you receive a variety of perks. I can only speak for Platinum guests who receive complimentary local calls, Addidas fitness apparel (should you forget), bikes to travel within the downtown core, complimentary shoe shine and internet (use your Platinum number), discounts on spa services, newspaper delivery and yoga kit delivered to your room.

Gold Floor. Guests staying on this floor (14th) get their own check-in counter (so you check in on the 14th floor and can avoid at-time chaos in the main lobby) and a lounge which offers food, booze and snacks (some with a charge, others complimentary). I love the gold floor and if I really wanted to indulge, I would always stay here.

    Conclusion.

This is a great hotel at an unbeatable location. My basic room (King Bed) rate for Friday, September 23rd with a discount code ran at $145 (without taxes). Rooms are small, but I never felt cramped. Service has always been excellent - from check-in to room service. Considering the unbeatable location, I think this Fairmont delivers.

    Hotel Rewards Program.

In my opinion, the President's Club membership has its value. Being a Platinum member (highest level) means having access to special events (golfing, spa, exclusive dinners with special Chefs, etc...). However, there are also immediate benefits such as free internet, shoe shine, discounts on several services, etc...In my opinion, there could be more benefits for Platinum members such as exclusive use of certain areas/floors, separate check-in just for the programs highest-level guests and complimentary water! For example, Diamond members (highest level) of HHonors program (Hilton) get a separate check-in counter and receive complimentary water (at the Chicago Hilton that I stayed at - there is another check-in area for HHonor members as well).

As a FYI, Royal York's Gold Floor is only reserved for guests staying on the Gold Floor. You pay for that floor as rooms start at $275/night (last I checked Sept. 2011). I initially thought that President Club Platinum members could also access the check-in and lounge, however, I was wrong (head-in-shame).

At the end of the day having a card to get points for stays is never a bad idea, and if you are a die-hard-Fairmont-loving guest, than this membership is a no brainer. It costs nothing to sign up. For more information on this rewards program, visit the site at:

I stayed here with a friend that is a travel agent. He was able to secure the room on a friday night for a TA rate of $79 a night all in.

"Holy Allah of Shit!" I thought. A fairmont in downtown Toronto for $79 all in? We managed to find street parking a block away, so we walk in with our tiny rollaboards. None of the bellhops bother to help with the door.

As we carry our bags up the stairs, we realize why it's so cheap. This hotel is extremely dated. Some people think it is charming, but it's just campy. The Banff Springs Hotel is charming.  Yeah, I like the hyper-modernity of the W and Westin, but I can show some love to old. But this is 1970s london. Ugly.

The room is the same. Dated as hell. Typical American urban size: smaller, but not Europe small. Oily/drool/bodily fluid stain on the sofachair, located center and slightly towards the front. Lolz. Very motel 6.

The beds were comfortable, but they got nothing on the W. Nice shower and amenities. I was amazed there was a flat screen TV in such a dated hotel.

Walls were paper thin, we heard some girls at 0430 gossiping about their night at KoolHaus. Not a big deal unless you are a light sleeper.

Good location, but this place needs a reno. This is America, not Europe. Hotels here need to be renovated every few decades or so. We N. Americans don't give a fuck about history.

Royal York is a good hotel. Not too pricey for standard room. I payed 200$ for a room in novotel which wasn't as nice and a worst location than the 150$ Royal York one. I never ordered from room service so I can't comment, the lounge/bar in the lobby makes pretty good food tho. At a price!

It has a nice retro look that I enjoy as well, refreshing from most new hotels and their modern type decor. Only thing missing is a guy operating the elevators. Hehe..

The lobby is spectacular, it definitely gives an air of royalty and luxury with vaulted ceilings and enormous chandeliers. The rooms on the other hand are relatively small and rather ordinary. Service was acceptable and the pool area was small but lovely. They charge for WiFi and billed $1.70 for a local call (when most luxury hotels comp them). All and all, a pleasant stay for tiff, but not a royal one.

NB: CN Tower is within spitting distance. 10-15 minute walk to Elgin or Bell Lightbox, not trivial in heels, but reasonable. Starbucks 200 ft west down Front, and another in the pavilion next door (to the East).

Average hotel with rooms tinier than NYC and furniture older and uglier than what you'd find in your late grandmother's spare room. (No offence to her). Clientele about the same age as her, too, which is fine if you are also in that age bracket.

Bathtubs like a holiday inn; the only part that even resembled a Fairmont was the glorious bed.

Clean but so dusty. Oh and the whole non-smoking floor REEKED of smoke. What, is this 1950's in London, England, or are we actually still in Canada?

Still, a fine place to stay when you are in a bind on a layover. Location close to coffee shops and that over-hyped, overpriced restaurant, Canoe, which you might as well try for the view.

Of course, wireless comes at a premium, but you can go to the Second Cup across the street for free.

We enjoyed our stay at the Fairmount Royal York mainly for its proximity to everything downtown.  Conveniently located in the financial district across from Union Station, the RY is also within walking distance to some great venues such as CN Tower, Rogers Centre, and the Lake Ontario waterfront.
Our room was quiet and clean though a bit small.  Maybe if we had royal last names we would have recieved an upgrade.    Loved old the vintage decor.  Historical hotel where many dignitaries stay while in Toronto.  Ample selection of shops and restaurants (Epic, Piper's and Benihana) on the lower level.  Easy access to subways too.

    Had quite the stay here!

The gorgeous hotel's main facade is under construction at the moment but that doesn't take away from the glory inside. All of the staff are super friendly, smiling and willing to crack a few jokes with you. Not a stuck-up place like one could think. The main lobby is very grand and if you poke around you can see mementos of famous people staying there (ie the Queen of England!).

The room itself, with a queen on the 11th floor, is a bit on the small side but still very nice. The products in the bathroom were amazing and the room service looked really great though we didn't go down that road. All in all just a good place to be, cool magazines, a paper in the morning. Wish it came with bathrobes though!

Best of all was the the gym and pool facilities! The pool sits under a glass roof so you can look up and around at the sights of cold Toronto, all while in the comfort of a pretty pool! Just get a locker key from the gracious staff and you're good to go! There's a little wading pool for kids and a nice hot tub as well. The change rooms have every toiletry one could ever need including but not limited to mouthwash, q-tips and lotions of every kind. There's even a bathing suit drying machine in there!

Fairmont Royal York is the place to be. Steps away from Union Station if you need it and a few cuts above with their service. Yum, let's just all move in already.

Thanks to the Wagjag promo - I enjoyed a lovely afternoon of High Tea in the Library Room.
Has anyone else gone for it? It's devine!
The staff are very friendly and they explain everything, included all the types of teas you an choose from.
The pastries and finger-sandwiches are all made in the hotel.
SCONES were to die for... and that butter creme was soooo good as well.  Instant heart attack!
The room itself is for a small setting of people and can get quite loud.
I wish it was more spread out and not so crammed together.
I don't think I would pay the regular price of $35/person, although the food was good.
If you do go - you'll end up with a doggie bag though! You get a lot of food for your money.

What a lovely, comfortable and relaxing stay we had!

The best part is by far the decor - the lobby is amazing, there are beautiful light fixtures, detailed work on the ceiling and furniture, the elevators (LOVE), and of course the staff is great.

I think the Fairmont speaks for itself - it's a luxurious hotel that gives you great/central location and spoils you while in the big city!

Special treat - we ordered breakfast in the morning - came with a complementary Globe, and was DELISH. Croissants = amazing.

I'm a fan of the Fairmont Hotel chains, but this one needs to be renovated.  It's really showing its age.

I booked a regular room with a king sized bed and the space felt a little cramped.  The toilet looked old and the wallpaper was starting to peel off a bit.

Besides the fact that this hotel is very old, the service is still attentive and strong as always.  This is a great location and was right in the Financial district of Toronto which was convenient for my visit for work.

Fairmont Royal York has a business center which costs $5.50 for internet usage.  I kind of hoped it was free, so I didn't get a chance to use it.  There's also a Shoppers Drug Mart connected downstairs in the underground if you need to buy any toiletries and etc.

How many times have you stayed at a five star hotel and were told by the Fairmont Gold woman "obviously this hotel is not for you.  Nothing makes you happy.". Wow!  Did she really say that to a customer?  It was like "please don't ever come back here because you are an annoying guest.". Ever since I had issues here, it just kept getting worse and worse.  I am actually very shocked after staying here for 3 weeks and having to change 3 rooms.  Obviously, they never wanted me to come back and I won't.  And yesterday was Sept 11th and I had friends I had lost on my mind.  I didn't need more stress from a "service" I was paying for.

I had this fantasy that since I was staying on the executive floor, I would get a decent room and be in one place for the full 3 weeks.  I over packed since my assumption was that I would unpack once and pack once.  I usually go to 3-4 countries in 3 weeks.  I needed a home base as I was starting a new job and needed to focus on work.  I had just been a caregiver for the last few weeks before this trip so I was at capacity.  And on my first day in Toronto, I had to go to a funereal.

This hotel is old..  It is not built with easy access.  There is a flight of stairs at the entrance where the limo driver dropped me off.  I waited for someone to help me with my bags, which I usually easily wheel all the way to my room.  I went to the special lounge where someone very cheerful greeted me and informed me that I was booked for two nights.  I had to let him know that it was actually 3 weeks and that I want to be in one place for the whole stay.  I should have known then.  I won''t bother you with all the details - here are some highlights:

I had to move 3 times because of them telling me yes, we have wireless.  No, we don't have wireless.  And after telling them how important it was for me to have wireless (I am recovering from an injury) they put me in a room with no wireless access.  I told them I was allergic to feathers.  I woke up at 3 am with an allergy attack from feathers.   On an executive floor, there was screaming and yelling from 2-6 am one night.  No sleep for me.  The next day I was told that they had to ask the guests across the hall from me to leave the hotel.   And it doesn't matter because it is an old hotel and you can hear EVERYTHING through the walls.  One of the guys who worked there decided to share with me some stories about this.

I hate drama and this was just drama all the time.   I felt uncomfortable going to the lounge for breakfast and drinks because the people who worked there made me feel uncomfortable as I was the problem guest. I chose not to go to the lounge as a result.

The scariest part was when I woke up on a Monday morning and found a hand written note from another guest under my door claiming they saw someone steal something from my room and could I knock on their door before noon.  What???  I felt so awful that another guest was contacting me directly.  It wasn;t about stealing anything but the fact that another guest was trying to contact me directly was so creepy.  I have been travelling all over the world and this was the creepiest thing that has ever happened.  They ended up calling security and I had to waste my time giving a report.  Later, I was told it was a prank.  At a 5 star hotel?  What kind of security is there for a single woman?

They did upgrade me to a suite.  They did provide me with fruit and sparkling water.   But they did not provide a good experience.  A home away from home.   They did not offer to comp me for the night where the guest they kicked out kept me up all night.

Their staff went on strike and it probably explains why they did not put the roll of toilet paper on and just left it on the floor for me to change, even when they were not on strike.  And how, I was gone from my room for 7 hours and no one came to clean it, when there was no strike.  I guess my expectations are way too high and I am just a difficult guest, as I was told?

I know, I should have switched hotels.  But I was tired and stressed with the new job.   It is my fault for wanting to give them another chance.  But after checking out and being told I was the difficult guest, I am done.  I am sad.  I am in shock at how bad the experience was and how no one really cared.  The irony is that those who know me know that I am low maintenance.  I just wanted a good experience.  Is that too much to ask when you pay for a 3-week hotel stay at a Fairmont hotel?

Our room was so cute and cozy I wanted to stay there forever.

Pink floral wallpaper, classic drapes, and the comfiest bed ever. We stayed here over a long weekend. Great city view, and a great location (right across from Union Station.) Lots of restaurants and pubs all around the hotel.

Always a fan of Fairmonts, as great service and great amenities are always ensured.

You know, I love the Fairmont hotels chain. The combination of updates, cleanliness, courtesies and customer service is truly appreciated every time I travel.

Something was just a BIT off in this hotel, however. Not enough to knock off any significant star ratings. BUT... there was a significant problem with elevator operations here that truly left a bite-my-tongue taste in my mouth. Sure, it's an old hotel, but I have stayed in their other historic locations, with no issues. When I saw a group of handicapped kids who couldn't get an elevator for nearly 20 minutes when the loading/valet area was just steps away -- within sight -- it kind of broke my heart. Can they install a ramp there at the very least to rectify this? Checking out, three couples crammed into the tiny elevator that FINALLY arrived because we all stood there waiting for WAY longer than acceptable.

We stayed in the east wing (I believe) where we had our own section of three elevators, whereas there were perhaps 8-10 main elevators further down the hall. And people were waiting FOREVER. Do they need reprogrammed? Repaired? I mean, at one point all three were working. Then... just one. Then, seemingly, none. The boyfriend was even caught in a non-operational elevator trip on one occasion. Thankfully, it was NOT ME. Or I might have gone all Jerome Harrison on someone.

As for the suite, it was created by permanently "opening" the door between two smaller rooms of comparable sizes. It was nice to have two bathrooms and a sitting area that faced the city (and a corner... nice!). But that "second" bathroom was hard to move around in AND reeked of cigarette smoke throughout the entire stay. I'm not sure if it was leaking up through the vents or stuck to the walls from a previous guest, but it was quite apparent, and I couldn't handle it for long periods of relaxation. (Note: The Royal York is a non-smoking hotel).

With that, be prepared that it *is* an older hotel, so there is audible evidence of noise from next-room guests (and bratty kids jumping around and screaming consistently in the room above ours... all the way past 11pm. DO NOT LIKE. AND drunk neighbors at 3am woo-woo'ing in the halls. But it's my fault for not complaining). Housekeeping starts knocking at 8-freaking-30 am. So while you place a privacy hanger on your door, you WILL hear her knock on every. single. door. around you. Also, since we had two entry doors, and only placed one privacy hanger, of course, they knocked on the OTHER door. You would think they know the layout of the hotel...

I know that this might sound like a negative review -- it's not -- but I thought I would bring certain issues *I* had to light for potential guests. The Royal York is a gorgeous hotel -- has the MOST comfortable beds -- and contains some fabulous restaurants (we only had room service; we didn't venture to the dining establishments within the hotel). None of these are reasons to NOT stay here for me, but they may be concerning for you.

One year for Caribana, I do undecided to splurge on a stay at this classic hotel. This is Queen Elizabeth's official residence when she travels to Canada.

The hotel is ornate and is full of history, especially the lobby. I enjoyed the spa facilities.  It is in an excellent location for activities on the waterfront.

I stayed in a Fairmont Gold room. These are special rooms special access keycards. The Gold lounge grants special privileges such as access to various newspapers and magazines and email access on complimentary computers.  Throughout the day you can enjoy coffee, tea, an honor bar as well as complimentary cocktail canapés.
There is also a daily continental breakfast included.

There is a Business center for more serious computer endeavors. I enjoyed the retail shops and the minor restaurants in the basement lower section.

We ordered a pre-cooked turkey for Christmas and I believe it might just be one of the greatest turkeys I have ever had, everything was wonderful. You could of ordered the whole Christmas dinner which came with soup, salad, turkey, stuffing, fresh cranberry sauce, gravy, and some side vegetables or just the turkey. We ordered just the turkey because the whole meal didn't interest us and then we could make our own sides but with the turkey it came with everything you need, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce. It was expensive but beats making a turkey and especially where I live in a small unit with the smallest kitchen in the world, it was perfect!
If you are looking to find somewhere who makes pre-cooked turkeys I recommend going here and picking one up!

I was very disappointed during my stay at the Royal York.  We stayed I. Their deluxe guest suite which was okay.   I had to call guest services 3 times as they had challenges getting "slippers/towels/toiletry" wrong.  In the end I just said forget it and they just let it be.

We ordered in room dining breakfast and again disappointed... For $55 breakfast, I would expect fresh fruit (not fruit that gas been sitting so long that the color started to blend onto other fruit), we expected warm toast (not cold burn toast), hot Danishes (not cold sticky pastries)

No turnover service and they charge extra for a microwave/fridge... $25 extra for each...  I would expect more from a 4 star hotel in Toronto.

On a positive note, their valet / concierge service was prompt/helpful/professional.

Probably won't come back.  I recommend the Ritz.

Okay - Yes I know it's the "Grand Lady" of hotels in Toronto, but why?????

It's outdated and its accommodations need a face-lift, but it does have location, location, location and some amazing staff!

What I like about "The Fairmont Royal York" is its history and how it treats the motion film industry with open arms - very important to Toronto's economy and film industry.

Being a fan of history - I love "The Fairmont Royal York"

Nowhere near the nicest overall hotel I've ever been in, but it was definitely nice in its own way. Everything feels like it's done with a sense of old world grande elegance, which is certainly a nice departure from many other hotels. Apparently this hotel has been around for quite sometime, so its not just faux history inside, even the Queen has a suite here. The proximity to everything around Toronto (especially being right across from Union Station) makes this place great for people visiting. It's even attached to the RBC mall below, so if it's a crappy day outside you can have a stroll around a decent amount of shops. I didn't pay for my 2 week stay here, so I can't speak to the price-quality ratio, but I did see the bills come across for services which I will go into later.

To start, the rooms feel kind of small, considering the scale of the hotel itself and everything else in it. Some of the rooms have upgraded televisions, but most don't. The shower feels old and a bit wobbly in the bottom, and the layout of the bathroom is a bit cramped. I will say they make up for the tiny room by having a super comfortable bed, with ultra plush pillows. I slept wonderfully every night. The service here is also very nice, as I usually left notes each morning requesting certain things which were always responded to promptly.

The catering staff here does a pretty masterful job putting on large meals with a lot of different options, although I did really start to get sick of chicken in multiple forms. The breakfast is the one area they failed to deliver repeatedly, but lunch and dinner were usually pretty decent. I never did order room service, but there are also a variety of restaurants downstairs to choose from if you feel like staying in the hotel for the night. There is also a bar which several people visited frequently and seemed to sing the praises of each time.

I would recommend that before coming here you sign up for their President's Club. It cost nothing to join and it gives you free internet access in your room, which would normally cost you $14 per day. It also gets rid of the phone service charges, normally a $1.50 hit every time you pick it up. The laundry service here is by far the most expensive I have ever seen, and my bill for 2 weeks worth of clothes was near $500. Just to give you an idea of some of the charges, socks and boxers are $5 each, jeans and dress shirts are $15, and a suit is $25, and they also add on tax for each item as well.

It's a great place to stay on someone else's dime, because they will treat you like first class the entire time you're here, but I'm not so sure I would ever come back and stay if I was paying. I'm sure there have to be other places a little more updated in the city where the amount you spend stretches much further.

    Updated - 4/11/2011

This update is to thank the Royal York manager in reaching out to me to get more information on the room i stayed at. In business you learned that hardware is easy to fix, but its the soft skills that bring repeat customers. I am definitely impressed with the responsiveness of the hotel staff.

This is the Grande Dame of the old Canadian Pacific (now Fairmont) chain.  It's a hotel that is classy in so many ways.  This includes the afternoon Tea, the Library Bar, the art deco architecture, the Lobby, and of course its place in the middle of downtown and across the street from the train station.  The latter is why the hotel was built in the first place (along with the Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise, the Palister in Calgary, the Hotel MacDonald in Edmonton and others).  They certainly don't build hotels like these anymore.

The staff is first class and the property itself has nice shopping, restaurant, and recreation choices.  It's also connected to the Toronto underground.

It's not a bad place to stay, per se, but it's getting a wee bit worn and tired.  It's a beautiful piece of art deco architecture and history, but so needs some updating.

Old school tiny rooms, very fusty public rooms, etc.

Library Bar?  Awesome and worth the trip for a v.spendy cocktail or two.

I had the pleasure to stay at the Fairmont Royal York and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I had some difficulties in my first room (phone power was poor, door didn't lock properly, etc.) and without hesitation they moved me. The next room they moved me to was grand and very spacious on the 14th floor. The bed, although firm, was comfortable and the washrooms were clean and reasonable.

The hotel is old and thus one needs to be cognizant of this. The TVs are small...very small and not LCD (channel selection was also very poor). Also, much of the furniture is requiring an update, but this won't likely happen anytime soon.

The key to this hotel is the exemplary service. From start to finish I was treated like a Prince (or a King). There wasn't anything that the staff couldn't handle and they did so with charm and grace. The dining experience at the hotel was also excellent with a wide range of options.

A tip would be to utilize the free shoe shining service. This was a nice touch and they did a good job on a very timely basis. Another thing I enjoyed was the fitness room and large pool area. Very nice, clean and a wondrous place for relaxation.

The location of the hotel can't be beat right on Front Street. Great proximity to Union Station for the subway and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (for major conferences). Although restaurants are a little more difficult to find in the area (at a range of price points), its still worth it and just requires a bit more digging (through Yelp of course).

    Enjoy Toronto!

I had the privilege of attending a conference here at the Fairmount Royal York. I knew of the hotel, right across from Union Station, but I had never gone in before.  From the outside it looks like a big grand ol' hotel. Absolutely stunning on the inside as well. I think it caters to the older crowd, I get a sense of "old money" when I walk in.

The staff here are superbly friendly. I couldn't find the room my conference was at, the lady at the front helped me find it. When she couldn't, she directed me to the business centre and I was able to check my email. I know i know, disorganization on my part, but if it wasn't for the helpful woman at the front or the business centre lady who ultimately told me which room to go to, I probably would have been completely lost.

The amenities on the MM floor where lots of their conference rooms are located, are amazing. They have a bunch of yummy light refreshments (i use the word lite, lightly because it depends how much of it you eat), I had a muffin, i don't know what kind it was, but it was absolutely to die for!

I don't know about the rooms, but if you're planning a conference, the Fairmount is a good place to consider!

I was disappointed in this Fairmont, as my other Fairmont visits have been lovely. Not so at the Fairmont Royal York, where I, a local, stayed 2 nights with an out-of-town guest.

    1) Our suite was not ready on time. So we left bags w/ the bellhop. Alas,
    2) The Bellhop gave us the wrong baggage ticket, leading to confusion.
    3) When we finally checked in at the Front desk (and they learned that my friend was from San Francisco), the clerk trash- talked Canada and waxed nostalgic for the States--not only unprofessional, but offensive. And long-winded. We took leave for our rooms, where we found
    4) We had a mattress cover that was meant for a double- on top of a King. So mattress was exposed on the sheet. We complained, so the next night had a full featherbed. As for the bathrooms, there was
    5) No robe. This is what sets luxury apart from efficiency.
    6) But worst, our VALET experience was a NIGHTMARE. We had an early flight to catch the following morning, so valeted on a Sunday evening. When we handed over the car, the valet said, "I'll take REAL good care of it". With a howl and a gleam in his eye reminiscent of Willy Wonka in the tunnel of horror, he screeched away with his leg hanging out of the driver's side.

The next morning, we called the suggested 20 minutes in advance, at 5:45AM, having been assured there was 24 hour service. Car was not there at 6:05AM....we checked at front desk again...nothing, they could not reach the valet on his walkie talkie thing...no sign of valet. 6:20 rolls around. We find the valet and tell him we have a flight to catch. He grumbles and shuffles away. 6:35AM...finally, our car arrives after 50 MINUTES! (And it was NOT busy--we were the only ones there). When I told him we could not give a tip because our wait was unacceptable, he crumpled our ticket, threw it on the ground, and stomped away. Revolting service.

I stayed here this past week for four nights and I have to say it is one of the most stunning, beautiful, and well-serviced hotels I've ever stayed at in my life. We stayed on the 12th floor, which is the VIP floor. I highly recommend staying on the 12th floor because you have free food all day, free wifi, free computer and printing services, and concierge services specific to your floor. The service and food at this place is impeccable!

I didn't think to get afternoon tea when I stayed here when my mother had a reunion.  I could see into office windows from my room.  I loved that there's a mall underneath.  Our window could be opened a little for fresh air.  Room service also offers Japanese style breakfast.

I've had great experiences at the Royal York; I love it for a romantic in-town vacation, or for delicious afternoon tea in the lobby.  The location is great, and the building is beautiful.  I know some people have had problems with service, but I've always found it attentive and smooth.  Only have the room service breakfast if you're an incurable romantic - the buffet at the Hot House is the same price and far superior.

We stayed here for 3 days and really liked it. The staff (Gold 4th floor) was
very nice and very helpful . The room is "old fashion" in a good way and
    the bed/bathroom was quite comfortable.
Breakfast was excellent as was afternoon tea....almost too good if you let
    yourself go.
Location was tops & self parking a breeze. Get a room w/ a view of
    Parliament if you can .
Overall, it was a very nice stay.

I would never pay full price at this old school swanky hotel but whenever they drop the prices I am there in a heartbeat. The rooms aren't huge but they have great beds, small but very nicely done bathrooms, good quality room service and you don't have to outside to get to the subway in the winter!

A long time ago i was looking for a romantic hotel to stay at during Valentines Day with an old girlfriend, so behold The Fairmont Royal Hotel. Opened since 1929, this hotel still holds its art deco vibe and it's just freaking amazing. I booked the hotel directly through them and got one of their romance packages that included a deluxe room with over 500 sq ft, king size bed, city view, large sofa, bathrobes, a bottle of sparkling wine, and 1dz chocolate dipped strawberries. Gotta love romance right? The lobby is just amazing if you are into old school art deco hotels and buildings. Checking out took a few mins since there were a lot of people staying overnight for VDay. The service was fantastic, i asked the front desk to see if my suit could be dry cleaned and they took care of it within 2hrs. The package also included breakfast in bed the following morning. I would love to stay here again if i was in Toronto visiting. Btw, the canadian exchage rate was way better then. I got the package for roughly $230 U.S.
