Review from Robert G.
Original eat date: 12/5/2009.
Last time I was here had to be 5-6 years ago, and I recall the Bangers and Mash being good, so this time around (I don't get to YVR often, but last time I went to the Thai House in Richmond and both times were pre-Yelp), I figured I'd give a second go [also since we were sans transpo to get anywhere else]--were it not for this being attached to the Delta, I'm not sure how much business it would have given the number of restaurants nearby.
I went in after the lunch crowd and before the dinner crowd [but it was still early enough to get the lunch/breakie menu], so an open seat on the river/marina side was easy, and with the sun coming in just a little off-the-nose, I was both well lit for my Globe and Mail read and warm :) This time I tried the Shepard's Pie ($CN 11.00) along with a side of onion rings ($CN 6.50)--fried and fatty for the entree, I amused my guilty side by getting a side salad ($CN 4.00) as well. In order of eating: the side salad was big, and the greens were good as well--typical little cheese and tomatoes if I recall but nothing special--dressing was tasty. Good news: not an iceberg piece to be found, so thumbs up there. The SP was pretty good as well but only tepid and not really hot--it was filling, though not enough so where I couldn't choke down my OR. Honestly, I wasn't paying close enough attention to realize there were mashed potatoes in the SP or I wouldn't have also ordered the onion rings--um, no Atkins here :) [not now anyway]. The OR were nothing special though and I probably would have been fine without them. Diet Coke goes without saying--no worries, they were on the refill duty well, including sending me away with a to-go cup.
The prices were probably were a little high for the portions, though I've found [eating all over including YQB, YOW, YWG, YEG, YYC, and YVR) that Canada generally has higher food prices, so that doesn't really bug me: the exchange rate did, being 1:1, so that made this meal more expensive than a US equivalent. Can't hold that against the restaurant, though I can this: I was there a 1/2 before the next closest person sat down, and summarily closed the shade that was providing my heat and light. Guy did it without asking or so much as even looking my way--even though the change in the light was akin to an eclipse. Dude and chick were working on a schedule-looking thing, and given the waitress' interaction, I'm not so sure they were not fellow employees. Employees aside, that was rude [and generally unCanadian of them], as was the non-intervention by the employees. This is probably more a 3.5 star place, but the taste was greater than most of my 3-stars, and the service generally good.
Hey Yelp Inc, how about some 1/2 star ratings allowed? [or convert a 1-10 scale into starts automatically]. -
Review from Beau R.
The Elephant and Castle is evidently a chain of British Pubs, since I've eaten at the one in San Francisco. They're a little loud, have lots of beer and British food. This one is on the water by the Vancouver airport at the Delta hotel.
I had bangers and mash, because I had heard that they weren't very good. They lived up to their expectation. I don't fault the restaurant though, I think that a banger is just a bland bratwurst. I had some good beer, a local BC brewer that I cannot recall at this point.
The service was okay, but we were there late (in fact two kids fell asleep at the table).
