One of the best breakfast places ever. I am very picky. The corn beef hash is to die for worth the drive and the wait if you have too!

Review from Deanna J.
If it were possible to rate a business Zero Stars, I would do just that.
Arrived at this location a little after 1pm on a Sunday. I had yet to eat for the day (nor had any coffee), so I was pretty much starving when I arrived. Surprisingly for a Sunday afternoon, it was busy but not so busy that every table was taken. Me and my guest got a table right as we were greeted at the door and was handed menus by the hostess. We waited 15 minutes for some sort of attention. No waiter came by to say hi, to offer water, to say another waiter would handle us. Nothing. About 8 or 9 different waiters (including 1 employee who looked to be a manager) walked past our table and when I tried to make eye-contact, they all quickly diverted their eyes away as if we weren't sitting there.
Did I mention I was starving? AND lacking caffeine?
Not getting any service at all and the fact that I was waiting to eat my first meal of the day around 1:15-ish in the afternoon made me reach my limit quickly so we left and went to another restaurant.
As I said, it was busy but not so busy that it justified being ignored. Especially with wait staff walking past my table towards the patio area while having a gossipy conversation about another member of the staff. Can't be bothered to even offer me water or coffee? I can't be bothered to give your establishment my hard-earned cash. -
Review from Maigen A.
I have to say, I'm teetering between a 2 and a 3 on this one. I've heard good things about The Egg & I, and as a brunchie without many options on her side of town, I was a little let down after dining at an establishment I really wanted to like.
* AREA & AMBIANCE: This Egg & I location is in the Energy Corridor area, near the intersection of Kirkwood and Memorial Drive. Anyone who's ventured into this side of town is familiar with its long, winding roads and its shaded, sheltered, and calm atmosphere - which only makes The Egg & I's outdoor patio the place to be on nice, sunny days. My family decided to give this place a try around noon-ish yesterday and found the place in a frenzy (church goers LOVE brunch, I'm guessing), so we looked over a menu during our 15min wait. Although the restaurant is part of a chain, it has a cozier look than its competitors, IHOP and Denny's - the "garden cottage" feel and outdoor patio set it apart for sure. It's a very casual place, with plenty of tables and booths, great for groups and great for kids.
* FOOD: With a plethora of benedicts, omelets, scrambles, and skillets to choose from, The Egg & I truly lives up to its namesake. The Parisian Benedict (sliced ham, mushrooms, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce on a buttery croissant) caught my eye (and my grumbling stomach) immediately, so I went with that. Corned Beef Hash, Crab Cake Benedict, Strawberry-Banana Waffles, and Waffle Eggspress were ordered around the table, as well. I *LOVED* and totally recommend the Parisian Benedict - it was sinfully, but deliciously creamy and perfect, and the ranch potatoes had a nice taste to them too. The Crab Cake wasn't bad either, though it wasn't the best I've tasted. Unfortunately, the rest of my family members felt so-so about their own dishes: Corned Beer Hash was overwhelmed with onions, waffles tasted generic, etc. My iced hazelnut coffee was disgusting and the carafe of OJ here is nowhere near as "freshly-squeezed" as Le Peep's.
* SERVICE: Yeah, so our waiter was a douchebag. Grade-A, first-in-his-class douchebag. I hated the vibe he was giving off. He didn't greet us; when my father ordered a carafe of OJ, he mumbled to himself and walked away without inquiring whether the rest of us wanted something else to drink; he laughed when I pronounced "Parisian" wrong; and he didn't even deliver our food (another waiter did). The only thing he was good at was clearing the plates off our table. Good thing my dad's a stingy tipper - I was all for it on this one.
So there's a lot of good and bad here. The area's great, the Parisian Benedict is scrumptious, and it's a whole lot better than IHOP and Denny's. Unfortunately, some dishes are lacking and some servers just shouldn't be in the hospitality business. We'll probably be back because it's so close to where we live and it's a good substitute for Le Peep, but honestly, I'm in no hurry. -

We decided to finally try out this spot this morning for breakfast. I had a craving for waffles and he did for bacon so we figured why not!? The hostess at this location on Memorial was super sweet... after waiting for about 5 mins and sipping on complimentary coffee, we were seated and our order was placed shortly after.
I had the Waffle Eggspress and he had The Flapper. Both items were delicious. The sausage was a bit on the oily side but none-the-less.. it was pretty darn tasty. Bacon were medium in thickness and came out perfect. The most enjoyable part of breakfast was their Belgian waffles with powdered sugar. It was cooked perfectly and tasted great with their warm maple syrup. As for the eggs... too bad I'm preggo, if not - I think I'd enjoy my eggs sunny side up as I normally get them. Eggs cooked any other way just doesn't cut it for me :( -

This place does a damn good breakfast...I can't speak about their lunch and dinner having never tried it. My girlfriend and I went there two days in a row. The first day I had this delicious texas scramble with vegetables, scrambled eggs, and steak. It wasnt the best breakfast steak I've ever had but it was still pretty tasty, and their signature hot sauce complimented it quite well. The next day I had their whole wheat pancakes and was amazed to find them to be the most succulent whole wheat pancakes I have ever tasted. WAAAAAY better than anything you would find at IHOP or Denny's. The staff was also very polite and accomodating...I strongly recommend this spot to tourists or residents of the Katy area.

I love a good breakfast more than anything and I can definitely say I'll be driving back to this location on other mornings.
I'm mainly an omelet person, but decided on the "MBA Frittata" this morning. My only apprehension was the thought that the asparagus might be canned and not fresh, but it certainly tasted fresh to me. I love havarti with dill, so finding this on my eggs instead of the typical cheddar or swiss was great. My husband got the morning specical, which was a gigantic banana, chocolate chip and walnut pancake (about the size of a regular dinner plate). He could only eat about half of it.
As for portions, I ate about half the ranch potatoes (which were very good), a slice of toast and about 3/4 of my frittata before I just couldn't fit anymore. So while the portions here may not be as large as at some chains (IHOP for example), there was more than enough to fill me up.
I keep seeing the IHOP comparisons and think that what IHOP does for the pancake/waffle crowd, "TE&I" does for us who love eggs. Just take a look at their menu and you'll see what I mean. Also, my last few visits to IHOP have been met with rushed service, poorly cleaned tables and floors, and filmy silverware. I didn't have any problems with this here or with the service. We'll definitely be coming back here! -

I love brunch, and this is definitely one of my favorite brunch places, despite it being a chain restaurant.
The Parisian Benedict is my favorite thing to eat here...two poached eggs with shaved ham, mushrooms and yummy hollandaise sauce on top of a buttery croissant half...absolutely delicious, and just the right size for a brunch meal.
The Ranch potatoes are some of the best I've had as well - perfectly seasoned and cooked. My boyfriend had the Belgian waffle and said it was delicious as well. I've had the Cambridge skillet and their Colorado Jack scramble, and those were tasty, too.
Service can be slow at times and if you come during the weekends, expect a wait. -

This place is so cute! It doesn't feel all chain-like IHOP (even though it is a chain). The food is grade A stuff with prices like IHOP's. Seriously. And they have fresh squeezed OJ that's always awesomely fresh.
The service is always friendly, pleasant and fast/efficient. I only have two complaints. Stay open till the evening and provide a better alternative to bottled salsa. -
Review from Chris L.
I think I would give them 3.5 stars for the food, but I'm rounding up because I had such a good experience this morning. One of the servers who was off-duty sat down next to me and chatted with me while I ate.
The food was excellent. I had the Hiker's Benedict, which was delicious. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce is delicious. The Benedict sauce mixes with egg yolks for pure deliciousness. The home fries are excellent and crispy.
My only complaint was that I just didn't feel full when I was done. If they served about 20-30% more food I would bump them up a full star! I would recommend you stop in. If you have a big breakfast appetite like me then you should order something on the side to fill out the meal. If I go back I'll probably ask for extra home fries since they are delicious. -

In a place dominated by IHOP and Denny's sometimes I feel like skipping breakfast all together until I found out about The Egg & I....
Egg is basically in everything (obviously from the namesake of the restaurant). My favorites include the Spinach Bacon Mushroom Omelette and the Colorado Jack Scramble Skillet. The portions aren't exactly huge but then again what really is a good serving size anyways?
Employees here welcome you with warm smiles and pleasantries that for me are well appreciated. Not that I am quick to sneer at the places that don't...let's just say that apart from the food I come back for the good treatment. Recently, I found out it was part of a chain/franchise...but it didn't feel like one of those places. -

I had heard this place wasn't very good, so avoided it for a long time. Big mistake.
They have a very extensive menu with lots of different tastes. My wife had traditional biscuits and gravy with 2 fried eggs and ranch potatoes. She said they were all great. The gravy was a bit spicy and we could awe specs of red pepper in it. She could only eat half of it.
I had a whole wheat pancake with granola and apples in it and cinnamon butter. To my surprise, the apples were actually fresh! I had a side of sausage, and it too was nicely spicy.
It was a bit pricey, but the food quality was high with fresh ingredients.
My only complaint was that the server left the check, but didn't bother to tell me you have to pay at the front door. I kept trying to get his attention and couldn't understand why after having had great service, he wouldn't close the sale. I don't think my family should have to wait in a line to pay...especially when the place is packed with people waiting to pay or be seated. -
Review from Jack H.
Heading out early one Saturday to take care of a few things on the west side of town, I decided to stop in at The Egg and I, thinking it might be a good place to grab a quick breakfast taco or something. When I walked in, there was a hostess seating people at tables - not a grab 'n go type of place. But I didn't have to be anywhere at a particular time, so I went ahead and got a table.
I elected to go with with a classic egg breakfast, the Eggs Plus: 3 eggs (I added one) over medium with potatoes and toast, a side of bacon, and a glass of orange juice. Not that I'm not adventurous, I just love a traditional diner-style breakfast, and probably get more done in a day with that in my belly. It was good, if unremarkable, except I prefer smaller, crispier, more seasoned potatoes. The service was fantastic howeer, and is worth another visit in itself.
The menu is extensive, featuring omelettes, frittatas, burritos, tacos, skillets, and Benedicts. In fact, they seem to have done with the egg what George Washington Carver did with the peanut. If only they could come up with some egg-based gasoline for more fuel oeufficient (sorry) vehicles...Listed in: Diner Breakfast, Breakfast Tacos, My Old Neck of the Woods

Did not taste anything spectacular about their breakfast. Neighborhood feel is what would bring me back. Honestly, my family and I still prefer waffle house. Hope I am not insulting to many people by saying that.

I visit at least once or twice a week. I'm known as the Grits Man!
I always get the Turkey Sausage patties and Eggs with Bowl of Grits.
I usually come with my fiance and the other breakfast items such as Belgian waffles and omelletes are great as well. Service is usually excellent. Quite busy most of the day before closing at 2pm each day.
What you waiting for? Go try it! -

Went for a late brunch yesterday. While food was good but not exceptional. The service was prompt and friendly. Place was full with people enjoying a late saturday breakfast with family. While its not the Fountain view cafe in terms of quality of food. Its convenient , close and efficient.. Would give it an extra star for the quick friendly service. Would go again.

Would have been 4 stars had it not been for the fact you have to pay at the register instead of paying your server. This added at least 10-15 minutes to what should have been a great meal. The food was certainly good.

Brunch me! The Egg and I get along great for brunch on the weekends. And when the weather's nice sitting out on the patio makes it even better. The staff has always been friendly and always seems to stop by at the right time.

So, what to do on a Saturday morning when the baby is up early (before 7 a.m.), the hubby is still sleeping, and grocery shopping was done on Friday? Go out for breakfast, of course! After checking out the reviews for this location and the one at Beltway 8 & I-10, I chose this one on Memorial. Excellent choice!
Since so many of the other reviewers kept referencing IHOP I just assumed that at the least it would be an IHOP in a neighborhood setting that would probably be cleaner than most. I definitely underestimated this establishment.
First impressions: TE&I decor appeared to be a more small-chain version of IHOP. There were probably only 6 tables that were seated, which I was happy about b/c I wasn't about to wait for a table or risk extremely slow service as the lone adult with a 10-month old. My server, Parker, appeared to be making the most of his summer job: eager to please and extremely friendly. The menu looked a little less glossy, but with ample options. So, I decided to jump right in and go for the gusto - Corned beef hash, poached eggs over-medium, English muffin. I've always been a fan of corned beef hash even in all of its canned dog-food appearance and glory; everyone has their guilty pleasures, right? AND this version was to be accompanied by a side of Hollandaise sauce. Unless you suffer from heartburn or fear the potential grease-fest how can you go wrong with that?
Food: It took a little longer than I was expecting for the food to arrive. This can be a good or bad sign. It's good if you're in a "real" restaurant b/c it usually means that your food hasn't been mass produced, reheated, or reconstituted. It's bad if you're expecting a mass produced breakfast - like IHOP (b/c really how long could it take to open a can, heat it up, and put it on a plate?). The food arrived piping hot and nicely presented on dinnerware that did not look as though it had been used continuously for the last 20+ years. The corned beef hash didn't have its usual cubed appearance or the red food coloring; again, I don't mind that type of corned beef hash. It was topped with the two poached eggs and a small ramekin of hollandaise. Immediately after setting the plate in front of me, Parker offered to bring a new order of English muffins if the ones on the plate were too crispy. It was only then that I noticed they were a little dark around the edges. No biggie. No need to waste these. Okay - on to the important part. Taste. The dish looked and tasted as though they really chopped the beef, potatoes, and onions themselves, and according to Parker, they did. The egg yolks were perfectly runny and the whites perfectly solid - just how over-medium should be. YUM. The hollandaise did not have the usual bright yellow food dye appearance. It had a nice slightly lemony, not too salty flavor. 2 thumbs up! Nothing greasy about this dish!
I ended up throwing in a last minute order for a small OJ (they carry Odwalla) and a single pancake for baby. 2 minutes later I had a cold glass of OJ, and another 3 minutes later I had a hot pancake in the shape of a mouse. No butter. No syrup. The pancake was tasty au naturel.
Summary: I will definitely return. And no, it won't be just because of the "prize envelope" I was given as a first-timer with the promise of something good inside if I return w/in 30 days. It was nice to have an option of fairly inexpensive breakfast food that doesn't taste cheap. -

HORRIBLE. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. It's no different than your chain breakfast places, just more expensive. We were a group of 7 and we waited an hour for our food, and half of the orders came out completely wrong. After we sent them back and got the right orders we were there for over 2 hours. AND the food was NOT good, undercooked pancakes for example, and the omelets were VERY salty. The waiters and the manager were jerks, with NO customer service skills. We asked politely if they could comp our meals or discount our ticket because of the issues we had, and they said there was nothing they could do, and gave one person a $10 gift card to come back... which we will NEVER do!

Went on a Sunday afternoon about 1pm. Still had a short wait, but because we decided that sitting outside was okay in the 90 degree sunshine we got our table rather quickly. We had to ask the waitress for silverware and we were never brought the water we requested. The food quality was average, although the menu was unique, and not what I would expect for a party of three cositng $40. Hoping that I can find some better breakfast fare outside of the chain restaurants at some point...........

One of My Girlies and I decided to stop in for a quick breakfast. Boy was it quick. Our order came in no time. I had the deluxe breakfast sandwich (ham, bacon, eggs over hard, and dill Havarti all on grilled sourdough) with ranch seasoned potatoes on the side. It was delicious. To top that off I had hot cocoa with whipped cream on top. Yummy! The food was good, the service was fantastic, and the hot cocoa was bottomless. That's what bumps this place up from 3 stars to 4 stars. I've never had bottomless hot cocoa! Never.

The Egg and I is an interesting alternative to the more widely known chain breakfast restaurants. They were really, really good though, and I liked them better than the others, despite serving the same basic menu as everywhere else. The two things that really stood out for me were as follows. First, their home fries were excellent, and a lot better than both home fries or hashbrowns at any other breakfast chain restaurant. Second, as someone that doesn't drink coffee, I was happy that they give refills on hot chocolate for free. That alone made it worth my while because usually I finish one cup of hot chocolate before the food even arrives, and end up drinking water with my meal because I'm too cheap to spend $2.25 on another tiny cup of powdered mix hot chocolate. At The Egg and I, I don't need to worry about it. Other than that, everything else I ate was delicious and really good quality compared to their competition.
