Review from Stephen Y.
Oshawa, ON
A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I decided to try something new, away from our current cycle of restaurants. Normally I would not drive around looking for a random place, but I found myself doing just that. Having a hankering for some chicken wings, we decided to go to that wing place on Dundas, although we hadn't patroned that establishment in over a year. Out of a frustration of driving we decided to give The Dubliner a chance.
I have never been to Ireland, but something about this restaurant/pub made me feel I had been.
We arrived around dinner hour on a Saturday. It was immediately evident that this place will be much more exciting at night, but at 6pm, it was a quaint, comfortable restaurant serving authentic Irish fare. But tonight I wanted chicken wings and fries.
Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and personal; everything you look for in a waitress. As a picky eater, I yielded when she explained that their "Irish fries" were cooked in vinegar (ed. note: I hate vinegar), but she promised that I would not be able to tell the difference. She was right. Incredible Irish fries!
We ordered two pounds of wings as well to split between us. Normally, we find ourselves taking home three or four as a late night snack, but this time we found ourselves diplomatically fighting for the last one. Unbreaded, and lightly sauced, these wings were as good as any of have eaten before.
Rarely we order dessert, but cheesecake is quickly becoming a weekly temptation. We shared a slice and consumed every crumb. The food was top notch.
Although I am not a drinker, I recall there being a very good selection of beers, ales, and lagers. Check out their menu for a full list.
Throughout dinner, we noticed that members of a band were bringing in their own instruments. My guess is for a 8pm start. Made me wish we arrived a little later instead. In the meantime, a jukebox with selections by its patrons was our entertainment while we cycled through the wings, fries, and beverages. Unfortunately, Katy Perry didn't seem to fit into the theme of the pub. I don't blame the management of The Dubliner, nor Miss Perry, but we will chalk that one up to a couple of preteens and a few loonies in their pocket.
Now, without trying to generalize, stereotype, or prejudge, I tell you the following story:
There was nearly an altercation involving two obviously drunken barflies that were not welcome at this establishment. I even overheard the waitresses discuss how they didn't recognize them. In a very discreet fashion, the owner (manager) was able to firmly escort them off the premises and made very clear that they were not welcome. Only a handful of the dozens of patrons even noticed there WAS an issue at all. Very well handled.
I plan on visiting The Dubliner more often, perhaps on a weekend evening to listen to the band. As I revisit The Dubliner, I plan on revisiting this review and making any necessary updates. I hope you enjoyed this review.
