So my ex boyfriend was not a gushy type of guy...he was very much a manly man. Well I begged to have afternoon tea here, since I love tea so much. He agreed.
First...totally random, I ran into my co worker here all the way from San Diego....that blew me away immediately. She and her boyfriend had rode their motorcycles all the way to the Ferry and decided to come to Butchart....strange right?
So we ordered the High Tea service. This came with a creamy berry trifle to start. If you have ever tasted heaven then this way it! The tart of the berries with the contrasting creaminess was immaculate. I could have stopped there. But then the multi-layered sandwich and dessert tray came. I think this is where I fell in love. Watch my oh so manly ex better half eat these little sandwiches was hilarious, because he was actually enjoying them. This was a very nice experience indeed. I did learn something about their tea. There tea is made from the flowers and leaves

We ate there May 7 for tea at lunch.  It may have been a little overpriced, but the food was good.  The sausage rolls were just spicy enough, I loved the "smoked ham", which I think it redundant, but it was a ham salad on a  cracker that was really good.  The curry sandwich was good, the egg salad was ok.   The sweets were nice, and the starting parfait was excellent.     I left full (and I am big big eater) and did not need more food for at least four hours .     I am glad we had tea there , it was a nice break from the 6x10^23 tulips we spend the day viewing.

I was able to get a last minute reservation for Afternoon Tea and I took full advantage of it.

The gardens themselves are beautiful, but ambiance and scenery sitting around sipping tea and eating sandwiches and desserts is awesome.

First and foremost, everything is homemade and locally sourced.  The starting Berry Trifle was light, bright, with the slight sour cream contrasting the sweet berries.

The sausage roll was so good, peppery, and the mustard actually went well with just about all the savory dishes we were served. The veggie and cheese quiche was light and flakey, and wonderful.

The sandwiches were so delicious... except for maybe that mango curry salad done in the shape of a pinwheel.  The cucumber sandwich with ginger cream cheese was delicate and balanced, the salmon was smokey and sweet, and the egg salad I wished came in a larger size.

The candied ginger scone was soft on the inside and crumbly on the outside.  The cream and jam went so well with it I wish I had a larger scone to lap up all that cream and strawberry goodness.  Unfortunately, strict Canadian health laws will not allow you to pack any of that cream to go, and they wouldn't let me take any leftover jam home.  #leftoversfail.

I'm not a huge sweets fan, but the desserts were light and not heavy, and not overly sweet.  Even though the portion sizes on everything was small, I still wasn't able to finish everything.  It might have had to do with the tea.

The teas are just amazing.  We ordered the 100th Anniversary, an earthy black blend, the Teaberry blend, a fruit flavored Ceylon, and the Mixed Greens, an earthy green tea blend.  The teas tasted great without milk and sugar until you got to the bottom of the kettle, when the tea flavor gets super strong and potent.

Service was prompt, super attentive, and my server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made the appropriate recommendations.

It was great way to end the day at Butchart Gardens.

Didn't know they had High Tea service till we got there! Great discovery and highly recommended. At half the price of the Empress High Tea, this is a must-do.

Awesome scones, sandwiches and service; knowledgeable staff and goes the extra mile to help.

A great way to finish your day at the park (which is a 5-star experience as well).

    Did I say must-do?

If this restaurant wasn't inside Butchart Gardens then it would just be OK.

We went there for the high-tea recently and were disappointed.

For the quality of food I'd put it below the Empress or the White Heather.

Sandwiches were dry, I think they were probably made early in the morning (we ate at 12). Fillings were good though. The trifle should be served at the end in my opinion, and needs pound cake in it. More like berries in custard with whipped topping than a proper trifle. Cucumber sandwich should have been served on white bread. Ginger scone was odd and didn't go well with the clotted cream and preserves.

Sausage roll was excellent (although a four-biter), as was the mini-quiche. Desert plate was very good.

Table was too small to serve tea for four. Service was very good. Location is (of course) fabulous.

Overall, a good choice due to location and price. White Heather has better food, but the location isn't good. Empress has great food and a nice location but is *way* over-priced.

If this is your first time having high-tea, or you are visiting the Gardens, are hungry, and want a true "Victorian" experience then I would recommend Butchart Gardens.

If you are looking for the best food at very reasonable prices then try the White Heather.

For a special, "everyone should try it once" experience, go for the Empress. I've had high-tea at the Peninsula in Hong Kong and the Pump Room in Bath, and I think they do it better at the Empress.
