Given our limited time in Vancouver, I wanted to make the most of it by visiting a fantastic craft cocktail bar pre-dinner: The Diamond seemed like the ticket.

Although worried it would be too packed around 7 on a Friday night, we ascended the creaky staircase from the nondescript entry on Powell and were seated right away by a window with the view of the old street lamp on the corner below. The aesthetic was everything you'd dream of in the upstairs of an old building: exposed brick, thick slightly muddled windows, high ceilings, and plenty of old tiles and lights and mirrors to transport you to a lovely bygone era. And aren't all bygone eras lovely in memoriam....

The space wasn't all that was transporting, however; let's not neglect the cocktails and Diamond's reason for existence. The lengthy drink menu was a delight to peruse and a difficulty to narrow down to just...one...creation. But, we managed. I can't tell you now what we had, but both were excellently crafted, subtle, creative, and perfectly balanced.

For a pre-dinner nibble we also sampled the gyoza. Plump, in a savory broth, they disappeared quickly! Not quite the insanely addictive version that I crave and can never find since I first encountered them in a tiny storefront during grad school in Virginia, but tasty and well-priced for the serving size. The food menu isn't sizeable, so this isn't a spot to manage a full dinner and drinks, but there were plenty of tempting options. I did notice the man one table over literally moaning in rapture upon tasting the duck rillette, going so far as to keep stopping the servers walking by to tell them how fantastic it was...and then moaning some more. So, it appears to come highly recommended!

My instinct to visit The Diamond continued to be confirmed the rest of the night, as it was twice recommended to us at our dinner destination as a must-visit for cocktails. Those in the know say go!

I heard this place was great and missed out on a couple of opportunities to come here when there was a wait to be seated and we opted to find somewhere else instead, so I was pretty stoked to finally get my chance to experience the Diamond.

The place did not disappoint. First and most importantly, the drinks were amazing - very refreshing and unique. Also, I love the space - it's quite small but feels very open, and if you're by the window you get a great view overlooking the heart of Gastown. In terms of food, I can only speak for the spiced nuts that we snacked on, but even something relatively simple like that was awesome. Our server could have perhaps been a tad more accessible when we needed him, but overall the service was very good and we always got our drinks promptly after ordering.

Definitely looking forward to a return visit soon.

The Diamond is not only one of the best bars on the city but it is one of my favorite rooms to drink in. Simplicity in design transcends across the interior to the extensive cocktail list featuring classics and new twists on said classics.

The menu is a bit limited, but I know how their kitchen is set up and it's understandable.

I don't see the Diamond as a destination to go eat but a place to go drink where one might find ones self hungry. In that case all the food is totally competent. But me.. I will stick to my Blood and Sand and The First Word.

Do you like cocktails?  They you should probably go to the diamond.  They have good food and a fun atmosphere and amazingly it isn't too loud in there, but the reason to go is the cocktails.  If you're a professional drinker such as myself you owe this to yourself.  The drink menu is fantastic.  I highly recommend the Penicillin, which is Blended Scotch, Peated Scotch, Ginger, Lemon, and honey.  It's to-fucking-die for.  This is the kind of place where you can go there, spend 100$ on drinks, wake up hungover and totally not regret it.  what more can you ask for?

The Diamond is my favourite place to grab a drink.  Yes, the drinks are a bit pricier but they're mixed thoughtfully, never too sweet, and often pack quite a punch (I'm now thinking about that Portlandia episode - google it).  I've always enjoyed the Moscow Mule and, since I enjoy a scotch now and then, the Penicillin tickles my fancy. If you can't decide, the bartender will be happy to make something special for you.  Just make sure you're able to communicate what you're craving because they will make you exactly what you're asking for.

This place is always full of energy and it does get rather loud in there but people are enjoying their surroundings, their drink, and their company.  It's a place full of pretty people, pretty staff, pretty drinks, and pretty food.

Their small menu offers are equally satisfying.  I'm a big fan of the gyozas and the pickled beet salad, so don't ignore their edible offerings.

Come to think of it, it's been a while since I've popped by there.  Time for a visit.

The space is wonderful, the drinks are delicious, the food isn't amazing and the staff are - ok...

There are many stairs at the entrance, wheel chairs, crutches and canes beware.

The space I believe used to be an old ballroom? It's cozy and great for schmoozing. You feel special as if you entered some high society's secret hangout.

The drinks are delicious, the mixologists' don't joke around when it comes to booze. You'll likely get schnockered cause these drinks pack punch. But if you're feeling redneck they also serve Pabst Blue Ribbon by the can.

The food is good, but not great. The prices are reasonable and the portions are small tasting size, so don't plan on eating a yummy satisfying meal.

The staff lacks charisma. I always feel as if they're put out by my very presence. Yes they will serve you and answer all your questions, but it's not a genuine feeling of friendliness as much as it is a necessity. I guess you can call them robots. Input forced smile here ________.

I once sat at the bar for over an hour drinking with a friend talking quietly amongst the 1am drunk yellers and I swear the handsome bartender did not smile once. You're handsome and working at the Diamond, would a smile kill you?

The atmosphere at the Diamond is absolutely lovely! Brick walls, chandelier and in a beautiful hundred year old building in Gastown. The atmosphere alone could have won me over on it's own!

Decided to stop here for a drink. It was the last day of Dine Out Vancouver 2012 so we decided to give the food a go... and boy am I happy that we did. I started with the ruby red grapefruit watercress salad followed by a lovely duck spread (fantastic taste and texture) and finished off with the food highlight of my night (and possibly week)... caramel tart! Mmm! Service was great as well, my water glass remained full all night (and that says a lot, I drink A LOT of water) and the wine recommended was great!

    Definitely returning!

Let me start by saying I would have checked-in to this place if I wasn't going to get international roaming charges on my phone!

I'm from the bay area, CA and went on a little road trip.  Ok OK, LONG road trip!

As a tourist, my friends and I heard about Pourhouse.  Got there at peak time and it was completely packed.  The hostess recommended the Diamond.

Good call!  The atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for - chill with good food and drinks.  It is ideal for a group of friends to catch up over drinks and small bites.

The cocktails were expertly crafted.  We each tried 2 different ones and we sipped off each others, too.  ALL very strong and tasty.

The menu there is meant for sharing - and that goes well with the chill environment.  For a party of 5, we ordered almost 1 of everything.  We did, however, order 2 different sandwiches to be split among 5 girls.  At one point, there was an awkward moment of fighting over the big pieces of fried egg that goes atop the sammie...that was split 5 ways.  So, just order your own sandwiches.

I've been to the Diamond a few times and really enjoy the vibe.

    Why they're great?

    1. The duck sandwich
    2. Their bartending classes
    3. Cocktails by the pitcher
    4. Friendly, attentive staff
    5. Laid back vibe, with cool, comfy seating options

It gets super busy, and a pretty loud.  This would be the perfect spot if the acoustics were a bit better with maybe different rooms or some walls to break up the space

The atmosphere was great, we even made our way to the "Elk - Room" for a great night of cocktails and bar stars over TOTC.

I only rate this a 3 star because of the service while we were in the front room. We had a manager come over a number of times and bark at us (we were a group of 15), and each time I asked for a recommendation (while suggesting a spirit), I was met with a glare and a clear "hurry the hell up".

I will be back, I will also look for more comfort and less "variation".

Thank you for a memorable Elk Room Experience.

Went here around 6:40/7pm after work one day and it was awesome!
The atmosphere was cozy and beautiful!! Very romantic especially cause you can see all the lights below from Gastown.

The night I went was Dine Out so I HAD to try the eats even though I was initially coming for the booze.

Overall the food (EXCEPT the horrible salad) was good and came in decent portions. The duck rilettes - AMAZING!! the fig and mustard was a nice touch to that dish.
The dessert I had was a salty caramel tart with banana icecream and it was delish! Rich but worth it.

The Drinks however, were stellar. I'm not the biggest fan of hard liquor but this place makes the bommbbbbest mixed drinks.

The craziest one I tried was this one called Blood & Sand.
Must try. The taste goes from sweet - sour - salty - spicy - sweet...

crazy.. .must try again and more.

Went here on a weeknight with a group of friends. The place itself is cozy with a chill atmosphere. You'd barely know it was there if someone didn't point it out.

    The problems...

The service was pretty weak for a time when the restaurant was virtually empty. The woman serving us was kind of bitchy. It took us a while for us to get our drink orders, then a while to get our food order taken. Whatever, it happens. But then my wife and friend (who both ordered the gyoza) took forever to get their food.

Most people's food came around the same time. I held off eating for a bit before thinking their's would arrive soon. It didn't so I finished off the salad. Still didn't come, so I shared some of my sandwich with my wife. Still didn't come. My food is finished along with most everyone else's. My friend asks the server where his is and she gives him attitude about going to check it.

She comes out with his plate finally. He proceeds to finish his and it's still about another 10-15 minutes before her's comes out. She gives an explanation about how it's takes longer to cook. Using my wife's as a comparison it looks like the first order was burnt but they just brought it out because my friend complained. When all was said and done, the gyoza wasn't even that good. Apparently it was super heavy on the salty soya sauce.

So we ask for the bill and there is a 17% gratuity added to it for the party. My wife (less inclined to let it slide) was polite about saying she thought the 17% was a little much given she waited about 45 minutes to an 1 hour for her meal. The server conjured up the bitchy attitude again. In response to the comment about how long the food took, she said "she could go check when it was ordered", like we were trying to lie to her about it.

The other people's food had come, been eaten and the empty plates removed before she got her meal. My wife WAS polite about it, she said she'd still tip but just didn't think 17% was justified. Again, with more bitchy attitude the server said she'd just go take the tip off and we could tip what we want, or not at all. Overall, kind of a surreal service experience. No "sorry for the wait", just excuses and snippy attitude.

Slow kitchen and snarky server mean we won't be going back. It's entirely possible the server might be reading this and think I'm an a-hole. Whatever. You earned your 3 dollar tip.

I took the money I saved and bought a hobo a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter as we left the restaurant. He at least was polite and apologetic.

Sounds good in theory. Packed establishment, great view and music and that's where it ends.

Way too bright to be called a "bar." Wine list is okay; food is certainly nothing to write home about. In fact, the appeal behind the food here is baffling. So rather than to review the food, I say, eat at The Irish Heather first. Period.

When we tried to sit at a table with our huge group of six people they were having no part of that! Nor did they care if we stayed or sat here at all. But I've been here a few times over the years, so I was not surprised.

Same attitude of apathy, all around. We finally had to secure two tables and then yell at each other across the way. After that, the service was fine.

The best thing about this place is imagining that it was your apartment, instead. Then again, I once did live in an apartment with the same exposed brick and beautiful windows, back in the day, in Brooklyn, NY.

I didn't sleep the entire year that year, and I won't be losing sleep if I don't return here any time soon. 2.5 stars. Maybe I'm just getting too old to appreciate when something is just not a great thing.

Before I start, I need to get something off my chest: near the entrance to the Diamond, they have a sign that says "I live in Gastown by choice. Those who are unfamiliar with IT'S particular allures are entitled to wonder why" (emphasis mine). It drives me absolutely bonkers that someone actually hand-crafted this sign with such a glaring grammatical error. This has no bearing on my review, but it feels just so much better to have gotten that out. Ahhhhhh...

Now to completely contradict the tone of my first paragraph: I love the Diamond. As others have mentioned, the space is absolutely beautful, and it always feels as though you're entering some secret club when you go through the unmarked door and climb the stairs. SO cool.

The waitstaff here give some of the best service I've ever had. I mean, how often do you feel like inviting your server to join you and your friends at your table? And not just your server, but the *other* servers as well!

The Diamond is known for their cocktails, and this is for a good reason: they're the best. I really wish I could remember the name of the cocktail I had (it was Pink something -I can't find it on their online menu) and it was topped with whipped egg whites. Delicious! Their drinks are pricey, but they're worth it on the occasional night out.

The food is likewise wonderful. The last time I was there I had the duck sandwich, and it was quite possibly one of the tastiest things I have ever put in my mouth. A word to the wise, though: the Diamond isn't a place to come when you're super hungry, as it's more of a cocktail joint. Also, when I was there the menu was different than the one posted on their website, but the online version will give you a good feel for the type of food they serve.

I'd have to say that this is one of Vancouver's best cocktail joints. I can't wait for my next visit.

I stick by my 4 stars!

I just had to add that i always tend to get bizarrely drunk here. I had 2 drinks last night (and i am not a lightweight) and i was seriously off my tree. Weird thing is I could tell i was drunk...it was like an out of body experience...but could do nothing to control it. I was slurring and ranting and I knew it...yet could not shut up.

It must have been the weird artichoke alcohol (Cynar! mixed in the Uncle Neil - seriously odd and deliciously bitter) or maybe the second bevvie that was "bartender's choice" - if he put absinthe in it that would have done it for sure.

Regardless, i provided the entertainment. My gift to all this holiday season!

No sophisticated night out in Gastown is complete without a visit to the Diamond. Either for dinner or after dinner the charming waitstaff never cease to put a smile on my face.

I cannot even estimate how many people I have sent to The Diamond so they can experience the glistening bricks in Canadian Maple Square at night through one of their antique windows.

The scenery inside is pretty good too ;)

Eye candy aside these folks are professionals. Custom drinks made with subtle flair, friendly service and a unique setting make The Diamond my favourite cocktail lounge in the city.

Who are these people? For real though, where did they come from? I'm talking about the bartenders, the mixologists, the comedians, the charmers behind the bar -- I'm talking about these otherworldly human beings who are fixing and mixing my drinks to perfection. I'm talking about the Diamond (in the rough? *ahem* too easy).

In a neighbourhood known for its 'cooler than the rest of us' -- or even them -- vibe, The Diamond somehow is. It *is* cooler than the rest of us: because of the drinks that aren't on the menu but are waiting to be made, because of the unaffected staff who don't bat an eyelash at the short skirt across the room, because, first and foremost, the experience is to be about the quality, the clarity, and the spirit of a perfect drink made just for me.

Best view of the cobblestone, best drinks in town, best, best at what they are. Ignore the short skirt and down a few of the best Vancouver can offer.

They have an awesome collection of bartenders and every drink is made with more than love, that's for sure. I've never been disappointed going to The Diamond.

The food is really lovely. I love that they have a selection of appetizers and sharzies as they make the evening quite right.

I am absolutely in love with the space here. Walk up a long flight of stairs, and you are welcomed with all around large windows that overlook the Gassy Jack; the hustle and bustle of Gastown right below. Brick lined walls, plus a turquoise tiled wall add a hint of a retro feel. It's not a big space, but I like the wide openness of it.

A good list of cocktails and wines provides something for everyone. Skilfully handcrafted, I've always been happy with my drinks here. I recommend the Isabella, with sparkling wine, mango and ginger basil. My other favourie is the Bicicletta #2 with Campari, Italian Vermouth,Gerwurztraminer and a grapefruit twist. Both are light and sweet drinks, perfect on a hot summer day.

The crab cakes are quite delicious too. Rock cod sub is also yummy-the Moroccan spice rub adds a unique flavour to it. Coconut Panna cotta dessert should also be ordered.

Drinks, snacks in a unique second level Gastown space. You should come.

I love coming going to The Diamond for drinks. It's a charming little bar in Gastown.

We strolled in fairly early after work and stayed a few hours. I won't lie, some of the fun, fancy cocktails can be pricey, but it's fun and kitschy.

After my Colin's Lawn, I stuck to good ol' beer for this adventure in weekday drinking. Both were solid.

It's difficult to keep all the different cocktail mixtures and concoctions straight, but their cute menu is fairly straightforward and the servers are very helpful in helping you choose.

I've never actually tried the food there apart from some bar peanuts (which were actually quite good). However, evidently the Gyoza was pretty tasty. It certainly looked so.

The space is fun with a great view overlooking the centre of Vancouver's historic Gastown. Upstairs, you'll miss this standard in bars easily.

It's certainly a more than suitable place to drop by and grab a drink with friends. I recommend it surely for its cocktails and experience.

An amazing hide away of creative cocktails and fine food. It's such a quirky but classy place, it's great for a date or just dinner with a few friends.  It's also a great place to try out new cocktails.

I've only been for late night tapas, but the food is delish. The Tom Yum soup is made with fresh vegetables, and the gyoza dish and the egg and beet dish are both good. The charcuterie plate also comes with really, really good cheese... oh man they were good.

But the best thing on the menu has to be the Chicken Sub. What they do to make a sandwich so heavenly, I do not know, but I know that my friend and I reached a higher plane of wisdom while sharing that sub....

I considered ending my review right there.

Who thoughts a Mojito could be fancy. With vodka, sake, kaffir Lime and mint, this drink put me right where I wanted to be. With long picnic tables made for sharing with friends and strangers, this friendly Gastown hot spot offers hand-crafted cocktails, a small share-plate menu and a great view of Gassy Jack and the Maple Tree Square.

I`ve been for dinner once and bar-hopped here on a few occasions. It`s atmosphere is lively, but I can`t say anything really stands out for me. What I've tried:

    Drink-wise:
    - Pink Lady. Well-made, but no zip or zang to it.
    - Vesper. Very good.
    - Bicicletta #2. Should have known better not to go for the Campari since I only enjoy it in small doses

    Food-wise:
    - Rock cod sub ($12), Tuna Tartare ($13), Crab cakes ($13 for 3-pieces) - all just "good." For such a small menu, I`m surprised the menu doesn't evolve seasonally.

    What`s more:
    - Doubles as a bartending school by day
    - Drink menu ranges from $9-14
    - Busy on weekends
    - Similar vibe: Alibi Room, Irish Heather Long Table Series

This is a good place for a couple of drinks when you're in Gastown. I've been here a few times before, and the service and quality is pretty consistent. Large windows allow a lot of sunlight in during the day, and by night you can expect candles lit at each table for a more intimate atmosphere.

I'll be honest, while the drinks are good, they are a little pricey. That's why I said it's good for a couple of drinks. Not a place you should go if you're tight on budget.

The Isabella drink under their "Delicates" section was anything but. I could handle it though, but delicate was the wrong word to describe this drink. And if it is delicate, then you can expect the other drinks to be even stronger. It was tangy and the ginger was quite strong. If you're not a fan of real ginger, or bitters, I would suggest sticking with what you know, as they can be generously used here in their cocktails.

I wanted to snack on something, so I ordered the Duck & Soy Chicken Sub. It came out just like a Vietnamese sub, and it was delicious, but for $8, I could very well have bought almost 3 subs from a Vietnamese cafe. And of course, I'd have to travel out to either Chinatown or somewhere on Kingsway.

I also ordered one of each dessert item from their menu. It was shared among half a dozen people, and it was just okay.

Overall, I'd definitely keep coming back for drinks, but I'd make sure to eat beforehand, or have another place in mind for a nice sit down meal to wash the alcohol away.

My visit was brief, but I take it that a little chill and a little rain is part of the package in the beautiful city of Vancouver, and thus, you need a cozy getaway to warm up over a custom cocktail and a warm bowl of tomato soup. You may think that such a combination is not possible, but you would be wrong, wrong, wrong! The Diamond gave me just that on a drizzly Tuesday evening, along with some very notable gyoza. We were even lucky enough to land a table right next to the large windows overlooking the streets of Gastown. The atmosphere is just what you imagine when you visualize a cocktail hideaway, lots of brick and candlelight. Service is superb, and I enjoyed my stiff, bourbon number. (The name has already escaped me!) The list of delights is long, and I love that they have creative eats to accompany your libations. The combination of all of this creates a sum that is greater than its parts. I could definitely see a barstool with my name on it here.

If I could afford it this place would be my new hang out. Amazing decor, great staff and even though the drinks are on the more expensive side you can actually taste the booze in them!

After a "Corpse Reviver #2" I was certainly feeling it and so was my boyfriend after his "Tequila Martinez". Sadly, we had wasted most of our money across the street at Chill Winston and could only afford to stay for the two drinks but I will be back soon!

I am not sure how it took me so long to finally spend an evening at The Diamond. This place is a gem, pun intended - the cocktails are absolutely incredible, using fresh, innovative ingredients, and the olives are pretty darn good too. My favourite cocktail of the evening was Colin's Lawn - fresh and tasty.

I sat at the bar and was blown away by the level of knowledge the bartenders had.

I wish there were more appetizer choices that I could eat, but it's not something I expected. Still, a bowl of peanuts and a bowl of olives were not quite enough to soak up the alcohol.

I've been hearing so much about The Diamond lately, so I was really excited to finally go for a friend's birthday. I was told the drinks were on the pricier side in advance, so I wasn't shocked to see a $10-13 range.

I started off with an apple cocktail called a Picket Fence, it was delicious and so cute and came with little slices of apple in it. I can't remember what the second drink was, they were both refreshing and perfect.

The menu isn't really vegetarian friendly at all, aside from a few desserts and side dishes. So I would definitely recommend eating in advance. I decided to ask our waitress what could be made vegetarian for me, since I wasn't interested in just eating the side dishes and she offered to have the kitchen make me a Veggie Sub. It was simple but it was soooo good! Hot and pressed with PLENTY of flavorful cheese inside, mixed greens, tomato and cucumber.

The location is fantastic and it is bright and spacious and I'm sure if we were next to a window the view would have been great for people-watching.

As it got late The Diamond got veeeeery crowded and loud, so maybe start your night here, but finish it elsewhere.

If a carefully crafted cocktail is your goal, this is the place.  Door on the street level of Gastown looks sleazy, and steep staircase is daunting.  But upstairs the bar is terrific.  Bartenders take immense care to do it right, from oversized ice cubes to vintage cocktail glasses.  We were there early and it was quiet.  Suspect later in the evening it would be a noisy crush.

You want the best mixed drinks in town?  Look no further!  They have a mixologist here that will blow your mind.  Caution:  the drinks are so good, you could find yourself ordering more than your body is used to.....and there's a long set of stairs to get out.  I would recommend starting your night here as it gets quite busy and you'll want to dance some of the alcohol off before going to bed....

The Diamond was amazing! Only stayed about 30min at the bar with a friend. The taxi man was fruity with a kick. My friend had a tequilla based drink with a lemon rind but that was wayyyy tooo strong...
The atmosphere was relaxed with high tables and airy ceiling. Watching the bartenders mixing up drinks in front of us. The funky vintage glasses that they were pouring drinks into were interesting to watch! Too bad we didn't stay longer to try other drinks!

If you love secret little spaces, The Diamond will make you swoon. Though not such a secret with locals in the know, the fact that one could possibly walk past it hundreds of times without knowing it's there makes it oh-so special.

Walk through a nondescript door in Maple Tree Square and venture upstairs to a magical space. Exposed brick. Aged wooded floors. White painted beams. An absolutely unique antique chandelier complete with miniature antlers. Gorgeous.

Obviously the space merits 50 feaking stars. So classy, elegant and vintage... ohh if those walls could talk...

The service is a home run as well. Classy, friendly, eager to please.

The food? A solid 4 stars. My tuna tartare was delish and my soup was good. I could have eaten a whole lot more but when combined with drinks turns out to be an expensive (and not so filling) meal. No complaints, it's Gastown.

The drinks there are well made. Cocktail lovers unite! My Moscow Mule was good, though I'd order something else next time. Good kick of ginger though.

In my rushed/buzzed stupour neglected to notice that the gratuity was already added to the bill so my generous tip on top of that made for a pricey small meal. My mistake though. I'll look out for that one next time!

Cute decor, and nice setup. Great potential for a place to bring a first date, for these reasons 1) lit by candles and dim lights to set the mood. 2) It was filled with patrons and it was pretty loud- don't have to worry about any awkward silences. 3) They played some great music.

The Diamond gets three stars and not four for the following reasons. It was a little pricey. The waitstaff was really good looking to match the good looking patrons, but there was an air of snobbiness that didn't sit well with me.

I read in a guidebook that this place housed the best bartender in Vancouver. I was a little skeptical, but the Yelp ratings were good, so off we went to find out for ourselves.

Ascend the stairs and you enter a beautiful, classy space with an eclectic collection of chairs and a great view of Gastown. Our server was very friendly and knowledgable, which was nothing less than I expected of the great service we received in this city.

For $10, my cocktail, the Taxman with London dry gin, French and Italian vermouths, orange and absinthe, was everything I anticipated and was very well balanced. The boyfriend's cocktail was good too, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Best bartender in town? I'm not sure, I'll defer to the locals on that, but the drinks were well-crafted and damn good. Everyone in there seemed happy with their drinks and it is another place that I would have loved to come back to and sample more menu items if we had been in town longer.....

One star only because there is no zero star option.

We live in Gastown and had been meaning to check this place out for awhile as it had received a number of positive write ups in different papers etc.

What an awful experience.  When we arrived they were pretty full and the place looked fun.  So we had to wait a bit - not a problem at all.  But then the hostess came up to us and asked us to follow her. We were lead through a curtain, through a dark cubby hole storage area, past a locked door and into the 'elk room'.  The girl (who was very polite by the way) then stops, turns around and gives us the spiel about the room; how we had to be quiet and that no phones are allowed (what?!), there is no menu, its for 'our friends' (what a load of garbage - it is the overflow area and to try and pass it off as something else is insulting to people's intelligence).  Oh! And finally to keep this room a 'secret'...  I am assuming this room is suppose to be a secret either because it is not covered by their liquor licence or some other reason like that.  I did notice that when we left we had to unlatch the deadbolt in the door - by that point in the night nothing would have surprised me - but this horribly illegal set up (violates fire code) was still a little shocking.

The bartender (yes, the term is bartender: I don't know when it became 'mixologist' after completing a weekend course).  Asked us what we would like.  I ordered a dry grey goose martini with olives.  I thought it was a simple order.  The bartender didn't like my order and said he doesn't like vodka.  Suggested to make me something else, I kindly thanked him and asked again for my drink.  He inisisted it was not a good order and suggested I try gin...  without wanting to be rude I explained I was pretty sure what I wanted to order.  Eventually he made the drink - horribly wet, watered down, with one olive and in what could charitbly be called a large shot glass.

After being condedscended to by a bartender I was soured on the night and ready to move to a better bar where we could use our phones to call our friends in order to arrange a place to meet up we decided to leave.  I asked for the bill and was even more shocked to see that I was charged $33.60 for 2 'Elk Room' drinks.  I guess they feel its okay to gouge you like that when there's 'no menu'.  I pointed out that my drink amounted to less than a shot of vodka and an olive, wasn't what I asked for etc.  I was told that nothing could be done.  We left quickly (see the barracaded door comment above).

This was just an awful experience and is shady business at best.  I plan on sending a note to the city to inquire as to whether or not this 'elk room' is legal or not.

I can't comment on the main room - every there looked to be having a great time...  So if you decide to try this place out (really you shouldn't there are a dozen better places within 200 meters) just make sure they don't escort you to this room - if they do, turn around and just walk out (after removing the deadbolt of course)

I totally enjoyed The Diamond!  Visiting Vancouver for the first time, I was looking for a unique, local bar with a foodie flair and I think I found it.

They were full on my first visit, which was going to be drinks-only due to a dinner reservation at a nearby cafe.  We returned a couple of evenings later to find the place much more subdued and easy to nab a table for drinks and food.

I must say the bar menu was extremely accomodating, with the various levels of drinki-ness.  I couldn't get past the Boozer section and snagged a Jersey, a manhattan-ish cocktail.  My partner went for the Moscow Mule.  Very refreshing.

For food we tried seversal small plates and a couple of the larger ones (tuna tartare, red snapper carpaccio, gyoza, fish panini, green salad).

The waitstaff and hostess were very friendly, and long with the cool, relaxed vibe, it made for a wonderful, easy evening of drinks and eats.

Currently holds the position of my favourite bar in Vancouver. The bartenders here are top notch...all of the drinks I've had here have been expertly mixed. My beverage of choice (gin martini with a twist) is so often butchered at lesser establishments, but not here. Prices are relatively high, but worth it for the level of craftsmanship. Hallelujah - a drink menu that's not inundated with horribly sweet, artificially coloured atrocities! Lots of selection too, guaranteed that there will be something for everyone. If not, I'm sure the bartender would be happy to whip something up for you. Also, my obsessive tendencies appreciate how well organized the drink menu is!

I like the ambiance (pretty bathrooms, too), but I'm not really a fan of the crowd...definitely industry oriented, lots of large (and loud) groups. It's always been busy when I've gone. I haven't sampled much of the food menu, but the menu isn't particularly exciting to me. I have tried the togarashi peanuts, which were AMAZING the first time I had them and slightly disappointing the second time. Third time's the charm maybe, but the cocktails are definitely the main attraction.

I love it when the drink list is longer than the food list.   I thought that only happens in my house!

The Diamond is a little hidden.  We ended up walking driving by twice and couldn't find it.  When you find it, ... it looks like you're entering some secret upstairs chamber.  The brick wall and dark wood is very Gastown.  The old dark wood floors and patterned green wallpaper makes this place very comfortable and I liked this place right away.

The food was average and the portions are a little small.  I expected that and wanted to eat less while drinking more.  Unfortunately, the drinks weren't anything special either... don't get me wrong, they were unique, but I've tasted better.

Overall, I still like the atmosphere of The Diamond and it would be a great place to take a date.
