Review from Yvonne T.
I have never been a huge cupcake fan, but boutique cupcake shops have been popping up around Toronto everywhere and foodies are yapping a lot about cupcakes... Have they replaced macarons as the newest sweet craze?! And with deals popping up for cupcake shops, I just couldn't resist! I wouldn't call myself a cupcake connoisseur, but I have tried quite a few in Toronto (For the Love of Cake, Bobbette & Belle, Prairie Girl, The Sweet Escape, and Cupcake Diner).
For me, the qualities of a good cupcake lie in the cake, the icing, and the overall pairing of flavours. The Design Cookie definitely has won my heart because it has one of the moistest cake bases I have tasted to date. The icing is not too sweet nor heavy, and was a great afternoon snack to accompany my cup of coffee. My only complaint is that for $2.75 a pop, these were quite small in size.I ordered the following flavours:
Donna Carrot
Red Velvetino
Lemon for All Mankind
Mocha
Chocolate
Banana
I like how they play off fashion designers in the naming of their cupcakes. Very cute!
The decor of the space itself reminds me of a boudoir. It is definitely the type of place that would emasculate a man, but would be a great place to check out with the ladies! My voucher was accepted without any condescending looks or frowns, and I walked out a happy camper with my 6 cupcakes.
Verdict:
I think that The Designer Cookie has won me over with its moist cake base and quirky namesakes! I may not be able to afford a Donna Karen, but I have a feeling I'll be toting a few Donna Carrots on weekends... Now if only they could make their cupcakes bigger... but I guess that wouldn't fit in in the world of fashion where beauty is defined by size 2 waistlines. I'll leave the calorie-counting up to the models! -

I probably wouldn't have set foot in this part of town had it not been for a special little Groupon. I enjoyed some delicious cupcakes and while my order was being filled I gazed upon some of the cutest little cakes I'd ever seen. Sushi cupcakes? Sure why not!
This place definitely made me want to flex my creativity in the kitchen. I'm getting over my cupcake cravings though... so many other awesome places in TO. -

I was in a state of trepidation as I ventured forth yesterday afternoon. The ominous rumblings and dark skies had given way to torrential downpour, and I was quickly reduced to a soggy mess within seconds of stepping off the bus. After reading the reviews for this place, I worried I might end up making the trip with nothing to show for it, except perhaps the sorrowful squelching of my water-logged sneakers and an utter lack of dignity.
Fortunately, I was amply rewarded with cupcake glory. Although the a/c and debit/credit machines were down, the selection was not! I ordered a dozen, including Roberto Cavanilla, Christian Diorio, Jean Paul Brule, and S'mores. The Brule (caramel) ones were my favourite - these are not cupcakes you can eat as you multi-task....they are worth a pause and even a few moments of reflection. SO SO SO tasty! I brought these to the Mani/Pedi party at Nailsense (wisely opting to cab there in lieu of further busing adventures). The cupcakes were a real hit!
I'd award 5 sexy stars except the cost per cupcake ($2.50) is quite high for the smallish size. Still, it's a good thing I don't live near this place because I'm sure the lure of frosting would trump my good sense and my wallet on most days. Service was great - I didn't have any problems whatsoever. -

Thanks to Kelly O. I too got me 4 free cupcakes. I shared them with my coworkers but I managed to score me a Creme Brulee one, which happens to be one of my favourite desserts.
There seems to be a rash of new Cupcake places sprouting up all over the GTA (see: the Yelp Cupcake crawl we had a few months back), and they're all good. But they're all fairly expensive for a couple of bites. Instead of Omnomnom.. it's more like.. Om.
The Cupcake itself was awesome, but it'd work out to be $1.25 a bite, really I could probably do it in one.. Omnom.
For the same price, you can definitely get bigger ones in Toronto, and yes although size isn't everything when it comes to some things (*ahem*)... when it comes to cupcakes, it means something. If you develop a cupcake addiction here, I'm sure heroin would be cheaper.
I'm interested in trying their printable cookies though. You can send them a picture, and they'll make an edible cookie out of it!! If I do, I'll report back. -

I can't remember where I got my voucher from...perhaps LivingSocial?
Anyway...who cares...what really matters is the deal... FOUR FREE CUPCAKES! Woot...
Enroute to the airport we drove by this place and since traffic was crawling at snail pace (as it usually does along Eglinton) I asked my fiance to pull over into a rockstar parking spot right out in front.
I ran in and was disappointed to see all these cupcake stands with no cupcakes.. only three stands had cupcakes... I presented the voucher and took the last two Oreo cookie cupcakes, the last Banana chocolate and the last Peanut Butter and Jelly cupcake.
They packaged them nicely into a plastic container and off I went... I even asked if I had to buy anything they were all like "nope!".
I took me two days to devour the cupcakes but they were delish. I know alota people say cupcake places are overrated but this place...you gotta try their Oreo cupcake...the icing is mixed in with Oreos!
The PB & J one was kinda...overwhelming...PB icing is reaaaally filling and fatty, so I only kept it to an index fingerful. The cupcake was filled with jelly but it was literally one big drop of jelly.
Banana chocolate was good -- the cupcake mix had really ripe bananas in it and the chocolate icing tasted a bit like banana and had banana chips on top.
Would I return? Absoutely. This place knows how to market their shiz! And of course, I love supporting small businesses who know how to do it right.Listed in: My tastebuds and stomach said…

I'm not sure how badly I should complain about this place, considering I got 4 free cupcakes with a coupon off of http://FabFind.com.
But quite honestly, there's no way I'd return.
When I got the free coupon last week, I went to there website to see what kind of items they had. I'm hosting my sisters' wedding shower in November, and was actually excited when I saw the collection of cupcakes. I thought I would be a good opportunity to try the cupcakes, before buying them!
My boyfriend and I drove down to 'that' end of the city, and presented our coupon. The young girl behind the counter took my coupon, and then asked me what flavours I wanted.
I looked in the direction she was pointing at, and realized that that weak selection of cupcakes was what I had to pick from.
There were about 6 cupcakes out on display. There were only 3 flavours to pick from - lemon, lime & a chocolate-oreo type.
Nothing exciting. And they looked surprisingly & sadly small.
I know it's free and all .. but really?
That's it?
It's 2pm on Sunday. They'd only been opened for 1 hour.
And that's ALL you have left?
I left, without an upsell. They had NO inventory to buy.
and I"m a sucker. I would have bought *something*, but there was literally nothing!
They had some pre-packaged box of rice crispy 'sushi'. It was basically a roll of of rice crispy, sliced to 'look' like sushi. It came with a set of disposable chopsticks, and quite honestly, looked amateurish - It reminded me of something I'd made in Girl Guides to get my cooking badge. Plus, it didn't help that most of the boxes were set up on the small shelf on an angle, so all of the 'sushi' rolls had fallen into each other, and had started to crumble.
I'm not sure how this place would survive without it's custom branding cupcakes.
The cakes I saw in the back fridge looked okay, at best. Nothing impressive at all.
My boyfriend observantly said the place "smelt weird. weird being not good".
I have to admit, it didn't smell like a cupcake should. Or that you imagine it should.
Oh, and the cupcake was ok. I guess.
Nothing outstanding, that's for sure. -

I have to say I'm really surprised to read the bad reviews on here. I've made several visits to Designer Cookie over the last couple months and have been impressed each time.
Their cookies are so good, I crave them and find myself being thankful they aren't open after 5 during the week or my behind soon wouldn't be able to fit through their front door.
I've tried many of their cupcakes, and have been really happy with them all. They don't taste like they are made from a mix (like a certain other shoppe in the area), and although I am not a fan of their vanilla icing - somethings just not right with it - i love the Orea icing, thier Peanut butter icing is delish, and the chocolate is super yummy also.
Yes they are a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.
I have to say this is my favorite cupcake place in Toronto! -

I can't speak to the cupcakes here but when I went, I designed a cookie. It's really neat, like the marble slab of cookies. You pick your dough, and two mixin's and they bake them fresh on site in just a few minutes (literally approx 1 1/2min). I had oatmeal cookie with peanut butter chips and skor - it was huge, delicious and not all that expensive.
