SUB food isn't known for being cheap but the Delly is pretty great. I'm not gonna lie - half the stuff I've had here tastes the same. I'm pretty sure the stuffing in the Jamaican patties is the same as what they use in the vegetable samosas, which also tastes fairly similar to what's used in one of the wraps that I had a while ago. To be honest I don't like any of those much but they keep me pretty full and after 3pm on Fridays, most things are 50% off so it's not like you're left with a gaping whole in your wallet afterwards. Definitely try out their spinach and cheese pastries. I've also heard that the soups and sandwiches are quite good!

I eat lunch here almost every day. The sandwiches are easily the best on campus, and their Indian takeout is surprisingly legit! Breakfast is pretty good from here as well. I also enjoy the friendly staff, really nice and happy people!

    10/29/2011 1 Check-in Here

This review is not about the food, because I honestly haven't tried it yet.  It's purely about the service I received here.

The department I'm a student in was having their annual Halloween party on Friday night, and I was in charge of getting a platter of sandwiches and wraps.  I went to the Delly right before 3pm (fully aware of the sale, but I couldn't leave the lab earlier) and I was stuck in a huge line for 30 minutes.  It was an inconvenience, but I was still set on getting the platters.  Once I finally got to the front of the line, I asked the cashier what my options were for the platter, since I saw they still had a selection of supplies for sandwiches plus a wide variety of hot wraps.  Money wasn't an object.  The cashier said that because it was after 3pm (not my fault when I was stuck in a huge line) they wouldn't do anything for me.  Now, the group throwing this event has gone to the Delly even later (around 4-4:30pm on a Friday) and they happily put together platters.  I was told to "see if anything was still on the shelves".  There was nothing.  I asked if I could order a platter and they could prepare it and I would come back in an hour, and they said that the person who makes sandwiches left an hour ago.  So how were people still ordering hot sandwiches?  I asked if I could just get a bunch of cut up hot wraps (there were tons in the heater), but they said no.  To top it off, they asked me to step aside so other people could pay.  I was so frustrated that I just left.

I'm sure this place is fine for food, and if the line up is so huge for half price sandwiches it must be good, but this was quite possibly the worst attitude I've received from an establishment.  I don't care if you're busy, if someone waited a half hour in line they deserve more respect.  One star.

UBC is seriously lacking in the good/cheap eats department. This place is my mainstay on campus. A freshly made-to-order sandwich is $5-$6 which is really the best you can do on campus. They also offer several curries and assorted wraps and samosas which are very tasty. If you go at lunch time do not be scared off by the line... it usually moves along pretty quickly.

Get a tuna sandwich with sprouts, mmmm. They pack their sandwiches so full too!

Every Friday after 3pm, everything is half price!

This part of town really doesn't have much in terms of high quality food offerings - so I give a bonus star when comparing to the local options. In other parts of town this would be a 3 star spot.

The first counter focuses on hot dishes, with a heavy influence of South Asian and S.E. Asian flavours.  The chicken curry is generally decent, and a generous portion of chicken with the bone in (the way I like it) with a rich creamy curry.  It normally needs a bit extra in the spice department for my taste, but they are happy to give you extra heat in the form of chili if you request it.

The other counter focuses on sandwiches and they give a generous amount of veggies on any type of sandwich you order.  One of my favourites is the chicken breast sandwich - which is more like a chicken schnitzel (cold though).  It comes with a mound of veggies on top - so much so that my big mouth actually has a hard time biting into it.  And as many friends and family have assured me - I have a BIG MOUTH!

MA GOODNESS GRACIOUS HOLY MOTHER BALLS OF BUDDHA

    i love this place.

    Why? WHY? WHHYYY YOU ASK?

Its cheap. I'll repeat, yes its cheap. Its so cheap you can rub a 10 dollar bill on your ass and spend it on something else that's cheap too.

That doesnt make sense. anyway, as far as I know The Delly is cheap and the food tastes great! So far I've tried their ham and swiss sandwhich, burrito wrap and meatball hoggie and they all satisfied me. It costs like... 5-6$, 6$ at most probably for a sandwich. Service is pretty quick, and the manager of this restaurant is also very friendly.

However, some of the staffs are not so fluent in english, so you might have to listen well for what they're trying to say.

I gave it a 5 star because its well within budget of a broke international student and its fast, and good! If I compare it with other places probably it wont stand a 5 star, but hey, this place is great for students.

P.S. grab an AMS Handbook that UBC gives out in the beginning of the year. They have free discount coupons for The Delly!

In the basement of the Student Union Building, in the west corridor. One of the quickest, easiest, and tastiest options for food in the SUB. The sandwiches are made to order and they have a good selection of curry, hot wraps, and samosas. This is my choice for lunch at the SUB.

It's usually mobbed, but that's certainly for a reason and the lines move fast. The best part is that they give a serious discount on their hot wraps and samosas (or anything else in their warm cases) every Friday in the hours before they close down for the weekend. I usually pick up a couple things for a late lunch and dinner. It's a great deal and they've never let me down.

I'll give it four starts because of the area overall is a disappointment and this place is good given the cheap prices. a sand which will set you back between $4-$6.

chicken salad, egg salad, chicken breast, are all standards but the portions are huge. they really pile on the veg and their fairly efficient at making them. I like that the have fresh avocados for a dollar extra as an add on.

i have tried the butter chicken and it was 2 stars and not worth trying again.

The Delly has some of the best grub on campus if you're looking for a filling meal and don't have much in your pocket (which is pretty much every student's story). Located in the basement of the Student Union Building, they specialize in mainly South Asian cuisine.

They often have some great specials for lunch, so be sure to check that out, but beware of the lines, as lunch hour is their craziest time of day. Best to get there early.

I love the butter chicken here, although to my disappointment it comes with rice and not naan. On the upside, they give you heapfuls of the stuff, you can barely close the styrofoam box. If I'm in a hurry and just want to grab a quick snack, I usually get the stuffed cheese and spinach roll -- so good! It's always warm and filled to the max with cheese and spinach, I love this stuff! It's almost like a meal in itself really.

The folks at the Delly are always great, delivering fast and friendly service. One of my favorite joints at UBC for sure!

Beware the Delly at 3pm on a Friday. That's when the vultures come out. And by vultures, I mean poor students who know that 3pm on Friday is when the Delly starts selling their food for half price to clear it out before the weekend.

Good prices for sandwiches. If only there wasn't such a huge lineup I'd eat here more. Haven't tried the Indian food though it smells pretty good, but I'm worried, because if it's bad it'll probably taint my image of that place. I just go here for the sandwiches, and definitely not the "warm service."
