Review from Ellen L.
My 5 stars are reserved for one thing only: smoked salmon on multigrain baguette with roasted vegetables and olive tapenade, toasted. This is my Deli sandwich that has taken me months to perfect. Instant. Foodgasm. Guaranteed.
It's all about how you build your sandwich here. If you build a generic sandwich (you know, roast turkey on white bread with like mayo and lettuce), you get a generic sandwich. Put on your sandwich architect hat, and you will truly experience the sandwich wonderland that is The Deli. The order sheet is filled with interesting ingredients. There is no excuse to not spice it up! Experiment a little, and you too might attain your 5-star combo one day. -

I know it's just a deli but this place is always bustlin', so a good sign, more turnover, fresh ingredients. There must be 10 ppl working in this small eatery.
Ordered the chicken sandwich, you can tell its fresh tomato, nice and crispy.
for breakfast dessert, also bought a mini-size Toberlone. Love these triangle shaped chocolate. -

So it turns out I've actually been eating their catered food for a while without realizing it. Time to write a review.
Parking is available underground at Royal Centre if you have deep pockets. I'd suggest coming here in the evening, but this place is only open during business hours.
The consistent daily lineup here speaks a lot about the quality of the food. Yes, it is good. I've had a variety of their sandwiches, and even the vegetarian ones (which I usually don't like) are pretty tasty.
My only complaint is that they pack WAY too much lettuce into their wraps. Besides making the wrap taste bland overall, we all know it's a way for them to save some pennies. Something to keep in mind.
If you have $8 and are looking for a place, this is a good one to try. -

I've been to this deli place a number of times for croissants, scones, muffins, sausage rolls and sandwiches. I must say the quality has always been consistent except for sausage rolls. Sometimes you can get a perfect 10 sausage roll wrapped in warm flaky pastry, other times your order would be stale and cold (with hardened crust). The baked goods are (mostly) baked daily and sandwiches are made fresh to order.
I find their croissants to be very unique. From a visual stand point, they look - limpy. This simply is just my way of describing croissants that don't hold their perky shape like the traditional ones do. However, don't let the look fool you. These treats are delicious and they sell fast. They are light and non-greasy. This place sells plain, chocolate, ham and cheese. They used to sell ones with cream cheese and jam - my favorite. Now they only sell them if you pre-order in larger quantities. Boo.
Their sandwich breads are insanely good. I've never had multi-grain breads this soft. After you had a custom-made sandwich from this place, you wouldn't want to go back to your conventional sandwich joints. This place is not cheap, but again you can taste the x 10 quality.
Other than baked goods, sandwiches, soups, and salads this place also sells condiments such as mint oil, hazelnut oil, Hungarian dry rubs, jams and pickles made from Europe.
Please note this joint is for take-out only. And yes, they do catering (a lot).Listed in: Grocery…

* All about the toppings *
This little deli offers custom made sandwiches from a wide variety of toppings. In fact it is such a wide variety that the primary protein got a little bit lost in the shuffle. But perhaps that is my ordering. In any case, it was a tasty result even if the protein itself was not highlighted.
The sandwich came wrapped nicely in wax paper: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
My sandwich was served on very fresh tasting ciabatta. It was a decent commercial quality bread. The mixture of avocado spread, hummus, and dijon worked nicely to give a little bit of a kick. The goat cheese was a soft cream cheese version that added a richness to the overall sandwich. Tomato, cucumber, sprouts, roasted veggies, and roasted red pepper rounded out the toppings. But the schnitzel itself was lost in the toppings. Overall it was a tasty concoction, but definitely focused heavily on the toppings and not the schnitzel. In fact when I first started eating the sandwich I had to check if there was actually any schnitzel on it, as I couldn't detect it at all! Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
If in the area I would consider returning, and perhaps trim down the toppings a bit to order a more distinct tasting sandwich.Listed in: Which wich is which?, Thanks, Yelp!

I'm stunned, STUNNED, that this place does not have more reviews. Considering the fact that the line up frequently extends past the store next to it, I'm starting to wonder if this is the best kept secret from yelp.
The line up is long, but its efficiently managed. Often there are two people taking orders and relaying them back to the sandwhich makers so that by the time you've paid your sandwhich is ready.
God help you if you try and change your order.
And if you ask for your sandwhich heated, it may never be seen again.
Once you sit down with your sandwhich, you're in for a treat. The ingredients are all fresh, the size is just right.
Best sandwhich place downtown? I think so.
And if you don't want to go with a friend because you're thinking "I don't want a sandwhich", then don't worry. It's located in the RBC building food court, which is easily the best in downtown. -

This place is Burrard & Georgia's worst kept lunch secret. The lineup often extends around the corner, but don't be dissuaded - it moves quickly. The order takers will come to you in line with a clipboard and take your order. They have all of the options listed on a piece of paper and you just tell them what kind of meat, vegetables, spreads and bread you want.
Note for the vegetarians: While they don't advertise a vegetarian option, you can simply build a sandwich without the meat option. They do have roasted vegetables, hummus, and avocado spread, along with the usual vegetable toppings and cheese. It would be nice if they had marinated eggplant, an Italian sandwich favourite of mine. Vegans or gluten-intolerant people will be out of luck.
Expect to pay $7.00-$9.00 for a sandwich (inc. taxes), but it's worth it. Everything is so fresh. If sandwiches aren't your thing, they have a daily selection of deli-style salads and soups. Most of the salads are vegetarian; the soups usually aren't.
One thing to note if you arrive and there is a particularly long line: There are usually two daily specials posted on the chalkboard at the back of the deli, but you can't see them if you are around the corner. The shrimp salad special is a favourite of mine.Listed in: Lunch on the go downtown

Buried deep within the Royal Center, this gem crafts some tasty sandwiches!
I was lured in by serval hot men in suits waiting in the long line. Too bad the line didn't move slower, it was so quick I didn't have a chance to accidentally bump into any of them.
Next thing you know I've ordered a sandwich and it's sitting all wrapped up in my hands. I take my first bite.. mmmm!
Note to self -- Following hot men in suits at lunch time is like following a rainbow to a pot of gold. A tasty pot of gold.Listed in: The Lunch Diaries

My last review was about the catering. This is about the store in the food court of Royal Centre.
The food was still delicious, but I considered bumping it down to 3 stars because of the very frustrating experience. Bring CASH if you are ordering something not sandwich during lunch time, and you'll avoid that.
The Smoked Salmon/Ribbon Pasta salad was so delicious!! The smoked salmon wasn't in every bite, but the flavour was there. The Chicken Noodle Soup was good, too. It had a tint of red... red peppers, maybe? But it had the yumminess that could be tomato.
The big lineup is for the sandwiches.
+ Employees come out to the lineup to take orders, so someone can start making them before the line comes up to the counter. Efficient.
+++ I wanted only a Soup and Salad, so I was escorted past all the people in the sandwich lineup and helped.
+ The lady rang up my order at the till at the back of the store.
-- then sighed at me because I didn't have cash. How was I supposed to know??
--- so it turns out I have to rejoin the sandwich line to pay debit/credit.
Next time, I'll be sure to bring cash.Listed in: FTR (or Second or Third), farewell, Downtown

I cant justify going to Subway or Tim Hortons again! This place is sandwich heaven. The sandwich is ordered completely customized to what you want. The bread is homemade fresh, a variety of veggies to choose from, and a list of condiments that include an array of flavours- I personally love the sundried tomato pesto. There is also a selection of meats and cheeses to choose from. I chose the roast beef which is served medium rare-omg meat heaven too! So tender and juicy! The sourdough cranberry roast beef ends up being $6.71 with tax and is huge! Enough for lunch and dinner! ( if you can wait...) and if you pack on the veggies like I did, you'll need a stack of napkins and a shovel to eat it!

What is it that makes deli sammiches so good? Is it the fresh veggies that don't come in a plastic bag, pre-cut to speed up the process of slapping some bread around them? Is it the soft bread that you get to pick from and the freshly shaved meat that they pile up so high that you can barely wrap your mouth around the darn thing?
Or is the kosher pickle that you ate while waiting for your sandwich that you can still smell on your hand even though you washed it twice? I mean, what's a great deli sammich without the pickle? The only strange thing I found here was that the price of a veggie sammich is the same as one with meat.... odd. -

If you are a firm/company looking for caterers, it's best to avoid the Deli. We put in an order and as each individual was paying out of their pocket, we had an agreement with the Deli that it would be $15 per person all inclusive with taxes.
We received the invoice and they had added taxes. When we called to discuss the issue, the individual who we spoke to was extremely argumentative and his response were these exact works, "well, isan't it a tax write-off for your company? what's the big deal" and proceeded to hang up. Needless to say we were pretty shocked to be treated like that.
If The Deli wants to keep being a caterer for businesses in the downtown core, it better smarten up or their catering side is going to be non-existent pretty quickly. Large firms do not treat their clients that way and they expect better service than what The Deli provides. The food may be good but if the customer service is lacking, people will go elsewhere. There is too much competition in the city. -

Great spot for lunch if you can beat the lunch crowd. As other reviewers said, the line can be quite long, but it moves pretty quickly. The breads are fresh and there are lots of options in addition to meats, spreads, and veggies. They also have daily soup specials. I have not sampled the soups yet, but my co-workers give them their thumbs up.

Best sandwhich place in the city. I'd line up for 30 minutes to get my hands on a Turkey on cranberry sourdough. My only gripe is that I have to walk 20 minutes to get there from work, open another in Yaletown!
