I'll be the first to admit that I'm a die hard cupcake fan. My mind just switches off at the notion of cupcakes.
So when I heard about The Cupcake Shoppe at Yonge and Eglinton, I made it my mission to head down there to check out what I was missing. My only problem was that I didn't live in the area and had to wait until I had an opportunity to swing by when I was in the area.
It was worth the wait. There is a reason why the store is still in business and one can tell right away why they are so successful. I could immediately smell how great the cupcakes were as soon as I stepped in. More importantly, the staff is passionate about their product, they were eager to answer my questions and tend to my needs as a customer. I was well impressed.
Yonge and Eligible - Vanilla Cake and Vanilla buttercream. Fantastic! I saved this one for last when I tried them. ake was moist and butter cream was just right.
James Brown - Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream. I was worried about this one because I find that a lot of chocolate cupcakes go strong with the chocolate flavor and kind of bash you over the head with it, but this cupcake was well balanced and well worth it.
Pretty n' Pink - Vanilla cake and raspberry buttercream - A nice change of pace with one of my favorite berries. Delicious Deliciousness.
If you haven't dropped by, check them out! -

Everyone seems to have his/her own preferences when it comes to cupcakes. And the criteria for fine cupcakes are very subjective.
The first thing I noticed about this store's cupcakes is the frosting. There isn't much on the top. Very stingy. And it has a greasy and slippery texture. I would have loved to used the word "rich" and "creamy", but that wasn't the case. I didn't get sugary rush when I tasted it. There was no technique at all. The sensation of vibrant sweet tastes exploding and spreading in the mouth wasn't there. And if you prefer frostings with grainy firm texture like I do, you won't like it.
Then there is the cake itself. It was very sticky. It wasn't spongy or fluffy. But sticky like oversaturated doughy bread. But it did have subtle ambient flavors instead of strong tastes of main ingredients. I enjoyed it at first, but it started to taste like a pile of glue.
Cupcake is $2.50.
Overall, the cupcakes have very muted flavors. Very boring. -

The Cupcake Shoppe was one of the first establishments I visited when I moved into the area. Their window displays definitely make it enticing.
I'm not a cupcake connoisseur by any means, but I've tried a number of different cupcake places since they seem to be a dime a dozen nowadays. The cupcakes from The Cupcake Shoppe can hold their own. They're not too sweet, have a variety of flavours, and have great texture. They're also very consistent in terms of quality. I've ordered custom cupcakes and cakes in the past, and they never fail to impress.
I've never had any issues with customer service. I always found the staff to be pretty helpful when I visit the store. Then again, I'm not incredibly picky when I go in. The only complaint I have is that it's damned near impossible to get in touch by phone. They're always too busy to answer the phone. They do seem a little stressed at the end of the day; they're not as cheery and upbeat when I visit near closing.
The Cupcake Shoppe is not cheap by any means. I ordered a dozen custom cupcakes and they cost $45. The only reason I come back is because I get what I expect and it's very convenient for me. If you live more than a walking distance away, I can't say it's worth the hassle/cost of coming here (parking alone is a pain). -

I love this place, I have been to many cupcake shops around Toronto and this has to be one of the best places to go to if you are dying to have a cupcake. Def worth the hr bus ride from scarbrough to get one. IMO. I also love the set up of all the cupcakes. Everything is so bright and welcoming. It is easy to miss though so keep your eyes open when walking down the street.
Pretty n Pink, is rasberry buttercream icing. The icing is not over powering like I find some and it dosen't leave any sort of strong after taste of the coloring used. The cake is really moist, which you might think is a givin to be a good cupcake but some places make their cakes more densir I almost want to say for some reason....maybe to peserve shelf life I don't know, either way amazing.
Price was 3 something which is good.
Other ones to try are strawberrys n cream, and cookie dough. -

I was very happy when my bf bought cupcakes for me. After we each took a bite our excitement disappeared. The frosting tasted like grease and had no flavour at all.
Loblaws makes better cupcakes than this place -

I tried three flavours (don't remember name, don't care to) - a chocolate with blue icing, a mint chocolate one, and just your typical vanilla cupcake.
They all taste like something I could make at home but only I'd do it better.
The cake parts are dry and honestly, it's just the look you're paying for.
The worst part about this place (and hey, I was PSYCHED to go visit this place, my sister surprised me with a $20 gift cert) is that I took out my phone to snap some pics of my cupcakes and the chic behind the counter was all "sorry no photos".
I looked at her with my jaw dropped - did she just say something THAT stupid?
IN this DAY and AGE, did someone with a total lack of understanding the power of social media and the BASICS of running a business just utter the phrase "sorry no photos" ????
Here's my phrase .. "You're an idiot".. on wait, here's a better one "This place sucks"...or how about "Spend money elsewhere". -

so i thought i'd give the cupcake shoppe a second chance
YOU CAN NOT JUDGE A CUPCAKE BY IT'S 'COVER'
Again, the cupcakes are very cute, however, the taste....*sigh*
WHYYYYYYYYYY MUST YOU DISAPPOINT!?????
I got 'Pretty N Pink, Frost Me, and Crummie.
Pretty N Pink (Chocolate cake w/raspberry buttercream) 1/5 - chocolate cake wasn't too sweet, but the raspberry buttercream was HIGHLY disappointing. I could barely taste the raspberry flavor.
Crummie (Chocolate cake w/cookies n' cream buttercream) 1/5 - again.....I could barely taste the cookies n' cream flavor....(at this point...i was shaking my head)
Frost Me (Vanilla frosting on marble cake) 2/5 - the "best" out of all 3. The frosting was green, which was..uhh..cute? BUT, and there is a big BUT....the frosting was hard/cold...didn't seem so fresh..and i really doubt the cold froze the frosting, esp since i ate them as soon as i got out of the shop.
Overall statement: I learned my lesson. I shall never come here again. PLUS, TALK ABOUT OVER PRICED!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Genevieve M.
Having recently been to Red Velvet cupcakes in Washington DC and Magnolia Bakery in NYC, I was curious how The Cupcake Shoppe in Toronto would measure up. I stopped in and picked up 4 flavours: Curious George, Sticky N Sweet, one with chocolate chips, and Frost Me (Vanilla frosting on Marble cake).
The cake itself is moist, fresh, and slightly dense with a homemade gourmet flavour, making it so far the best cake of any of the 3 cupcake shops I have recently visited. The frostings are well-proportioned to the cakes and come in a variety of textures and levels of richness. Being a real sweet tooth, I preferred the vanilla frosting as it is richer and denser frosting.
I believe they have approximately 9 cupcake flavours available each day, which provides a good variety to choose from.
I would recommend these cupcakes and would visit again. -

I love the vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting from the Cupcake Shoppe. They have a long list of flavours to choose from but only a few are available each day. Sometimes simplicity is best. My boyfriend knows that picking up a half-dozen cupcakes from here will quickly make me very happy.
They have a daily rotation of flavours so you never know what will be for sale until you stop by. Their little space on Yonge St. is mostly bakery space with a little counter and till at the front, and some gift cards in case you are in a pinch.
Their cupcakes are moist and not too sweet, and their frosting is smooth, rich, not too sweet. There is just the perfect amount of icing on each cupcake. They are priced at $2.50 each, but if you come late in the afternoon you can buy their "day old" ones for less. -
Review from Stefanie L.
I love cupcakes and when I go on vacation, I sometimes go out of my way to taste/try them. These were okay. The selection is reallllly small and I didn't like most of the flavors, so I just bought the 3 that I did (red velvet, caramel vanilla, and chocolate). They were good, but I really am yelping my overall experience, not the cupcakes themselves.
What really got me was just how RUDE the lady behind the counter was. I thought Canadians were known for being nice! Definitely not an applicable blanket statement.
The shop was empty, so I took a few minutes (not that long, ~ 3 minutes) to decide and I was asking some questions about the cupcakes (~2 questions). She answers them, but starts to get annoyed that I'm asking questions and not being faster to buy my cupcakes. I order 3 cupcakes and on the way out, I asked one more question. She rolls her eyes, answers and walks over to a colleague and starts whispering to her about how annoying I am. I'm still standing there.

I bought a 6-pack to share with a friends. We were dissappointed with the flavour of the buttercream on the ones that had it because there was none. The only one that was good was the "opposites attract" cupcake.
However, they were moist I just wished that I could taste the flavour I paid for. -

I'm a cupcake fanatic. In every city I travel to, I make it a point to try every cupcake shop from Magnolia Bakery and Cupcake Cafe in NYC to Sprinkles in Vancouver.
I was excited when The Cupcake Shoppe opened years ago. I wanted to try all the flavours. A dozen cupcakes and $25 later, I was left disappointed. The cake itself was light but lacked depth of flavour. The "buttercream" tasted more like vegetable shortening rather than butter.
Next time I crave cupcakes, I'm making it myself. -

I work in the area and it seems to be the only cupcake place I can go to for a sweet tooth craving.
I think the cupcakes are beautifully decorated but I dont know if they are suppose to have flavours? They seemed bland and dry the last time I had them but I just like the way they look.
It would help if they were more moist. -

My boyfriend is actually the one that introduced me to this shop!
A few years ago, he lived in this neighborhood so sometimes he'd surprise me with a box of cupcakes from the Cupcake Shoppe. It wasn't until he moved out of the neighborhood and moved in with me that I actually stepped foot into the shop myself.
The Cupcake Shoppe is a tiny little shop that has enough standing room for like 3-5 customers. I am a fan because you can always count on them for having a variety in the store at any given time so you never leave empty handed. Since I am always in charge of buying my family's birthday cakes, sometimes I get a dozen of cupcakes instead of a regular cake. The cupcakes here always get rave reviews so there's never any left overs.
It's probably not the best in the city but I never found it to be bland or dry even after a day or two. I am a fan of their frosting but not the gum balls that they sometimes put on the cupcakes.
The prices are $2.50 each, $13 for 6 and $25 for a dozen. They also sometime sell a mixed pack of the ones left from previous day for a substantial discount. I've had them and they were still good. -

Disappointing: that seems to be the consensus about The Cupcake Shoppe.
Something about their cutely decorated confections appealed to me as I walked by their window, and I felt I had to give it a try. But, it's always best not to judge a book by it's cover, as it is a cupcake by it's....icing. (?)
The service isn't anything worth mentioning either. Even still, I'm always willing to give an impartial cupcake a chance. However, the only thing I walked out with from The Cupcake Shoppe was a bad taste in my mouth. -

Not as great as people have raved but also not as bad as some of the real cupcake connoisseurs made it out.
However, this review is based on two cupcakes: A vanilla and a caramel.
The Basic Vanilla: Very light, moist, fluffy and tasty. Everything I like in a cupcake (I'll wave it artistic merit since it was a very basic cupcake).
Not at all as dry as some warned me, until...
Caramel: Yawn. The cake was a tad dyer than the regular vanilla (though I think it might have been the same vanilla type cake) and instead of a frosting they used a caramel glaze. Not necessarily horrible but I would've gone with a fluffy frosting to offset the bland cake. Plus it was topped with a yellow ju-jube (the hell?!). I would've opted for a candied pecan but that's just me ;) -

I've only had the chocolate cake with raspberry icing, and it was GOOD! the cake was moist, icing was not too sweet - definitely hit the spot for my sweet craving!
i still miss Crumbs in NYC the most - but before i get to go back there i'll have to come here... -

So YUMMY is all I have to say!
Best Cup Cakes in the city and rich and moist and in multiple flavours such as, After Eight, Creamsicle, Vanilla, Marble and list goes on and on....classy looking and delectable! You can purchase by the half dozen....and mix up the choices to taste a bit of each!
A place not to miss in the city! -

There are some great cupcake places in Toronto, but based on my one visit, The Cupcake Shoppe is just ok. The cupcakes have cutesy names, which is funny, but also a bit annoying because you have to ask what's in them. I had a Sleepless in Toronto, which is a chocolate cupcake with coffee buttercream. The cake was a little dry, and the coffee flavour was barely noticeable.
They have a nice storefront, the place looks good, their website is well designed, etc. It's too bad the cupcakes aren't great. -

Cute little shop on Yonge street with bad service.
I accidently said I wanted 12 cupcakes but then apologized and said that I wanted 6 instead. What I got however, was attitude after apologizing three times. I even said thank you after paying and she didn't even keep eye contact while mumbling a "your welcome".
Putting service aside, I found that the cupcakes were okay. I think making cupcakes from a mix would've been more satisfying and less dry. The only good part about the cupcake was the icing but it was squished around the box after walking about a block. I'm quite glad that I bought 6 cupcakes instead of 12.
Overall, I don't think their cupcakes are worth $3 a piece and their service could definately improve. If you're willing to travel for moist cupcakes, Cupcake Lane is the place to go. -

Everyone loves cupcakes! So make them right. The Cupcake shop does a beautiful job merchandising the cupcakes, buy falls short on taste!
The fact of the matter is, you will never get a better cupcake than making your own, or at a local bake sale.
If your looking to dazzle your guests with precise designs, and beautiful colors, then buy a dozen....but replace them with your own when your ready to serve them!
Economically speaking, they are very pricey! -

I lived at Yonge & Eglinton for 3 years and it wasn't until my 2nd year in that I discovered The Cupcake Shoppe. I'm surprised I didn't notice it sooner. The space is small... 500 sq ft give or take. The display window is magical with whimsically decorated cupcakes fashioned to look like little animals, ladybugs or other animate objects. You can not see the displays without taking a peek inside.
Two words: Real Buttercream. This is probably why I love this place so much. You will find these little pieces of heaven perfectly topped with different flavors of not-too-sweet buttercream. My favorites are: Creamsicle, Crummie and After Ate.
I live in Manhattan now... fabled land of the best cupcakes. I would skip them all for a Young & Eligible cupcake!
Tip: Sometimes they close before their actual closing time if they run out of cupcakes and you will be greeted by a sign telling you to come back another day... which happens more often than not. -

Kudos to The Cupcake Shoppe for great marketing. They seem to have a little bit of a cult following but I've always found that their cupcakes were lacking a little something.
When you need to fulfill the cupcake craving they do the job, when you need something to impress they definitely look pretty, but I've always found their cupcakes to be on the dry side.
At almost $3.00 a cupcake there's definitely better out there. -

Yumm! these treats are delicious and always fresh. Personally I'm a big fan of the buttercream cupcakes and vanilla bottoms but they are all good. These also make a great little personalized surprise for someone special as they can custom make the cupcakes. The display window and the smell in the morning are enough to lure me in!
A fun little fact - this place claims to be the original cupcake shop in Toronto that started the frenzy, it's been around for 6 years! -

I have a HUGE sweet tooth so the Cupcake Shoppe always comes in handy when I have one of my chocolate or buttercream cravings!
Sadly, I have mixed feelings about this place and I will tell you why.
The Cupcake Shoppe does put a lot of effort and care into everything they bake. I have bought cupcakes for my boyfriend's birthday dinner and I had the store create a doctor-themed cake for my dad's birthday. Both of these desserts were eaten with only compliments but no complaints!
Also, in terms of cupcake selection, the store has several types and always has at least 10 of the cupcakes made fresh every day for people to buy.
Unfortunately I have a few iffy things to say...
The cupcakes do not come cheap. If you wish to buy a single cupcake, it is close to $3 per cake.
The custom cake orders are not inexpensive either, BUT what you pay is what you get. And what you get is something customized and unique for your special party or gathering.
One other thing that bothered me is when I ordered the cake, each size is WAY bigger than they estimate. So put it this way.... a third of my dad's birthday cake went bad by the end because it lasted a full week after his party.
As well, sometimes the icing flavours do not vary even though they are suppose to be different on your tastebuds.
However, the Cupcake Shoppe is a really cute place where a lot of love and effort are put into every baked good! -

After trying two flavors -- chocolate and vanilla -- I was sold! The cupcakes were moist and the icing was delicious! It's the really sweet kind, which I love! The staff was very sweet and the price point is good.
It's a long trip to the Cupcake Shoppe for me, but if I lived closer, I'd definitely be a regular. -

Doh! Here I thought I was going to be a first on this one.
Well, I too felt a little disappointed as Jennifer N. did. Although I thought the cupcakes tasted fine, not bad, but not the best cupcake ever, I was more appauled at the price of $2.50! Now, I'll be honest, I think I'm forgetting that they are just as expensive in NYC, but they at least taste delicious enough to make me crave one whenever I'm home (god forbid they're putting some crave causing chemical in them!).
The place does get some points for their plentiful options of cupcake flavors/frostings and the girls were friendly.
However, I was shocked when I walked by on my first attempt last week to try this place and it said "sold out". How do you sell out? Make some more cupcakes!
Aight, soooooo....if you REALLY want a cupcake, you'll be fine (as was my situation), but don't expect to be like "mmmmmm....delicious" -

I picked up 2 cupcakes this weekend:
curious george (chocholate with banana frosting) & Creamsicle.
Both were moist but very bland, infact I could hardly tell the cupcakes apart in flavour. I feel as thou I can make this better at home with betty crocker mix and homemade frosting. I was disappointed in the seleciton, very basic. Was hoping to find some unique flavours and combinations. They need some new ideas, maybe they should watch cupcake wars! nevertheless I was dissapointed and will not go back. -

Not bad. I think we'd have to try this place again. My friends like it, but we didn't like it so much. The cake was good, but the icing didn't have a lot of flavour. The raspberry even had Nerds on it. That was a nice touch. Prices were pretty average.

Offering a total of 17 nut-free flavours, with nine available in-store each and every day, The Cupcake Shoppe wins the award for having the most creative cupcake names. Some of my favourites include Yonge 'n' Eligible (vanilla or chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream), Sleepless in Toronto (vanilla or chocolate cake with coffee buttercream), Curious George (vanilla or chocolate cake with banana buttercream), and Eh? (vanilla cake with maple buttercream). Unfortunately cute names and beautiful presentation isn't everything, but these cupcakes are still a solid choice when you need that mini-cake fix.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have worked here a few years ago, because frankly it is one of the best cupcake shops. They use real buttercream, they have original flavours and they have really high standards of what they put out for the customers. It is amazing the amount of cakes and cupcakes that are produced at such a tiny bakery. Congrats.

Heather B, you are right on. I used to live in the area and was excited when I saw the shop in the works....but I get the distinct impression the owner (I don't recall her name, but recall it's a woman) was way more excited about the surfacey stuff - the beautiful presentation of the cupcakes, the uber-girly pink awning with girly font, scalloped edges, the smart plastic travel cases that ensure the cupcakes don't slide around, etc. And at nearly $3 a pop, they'd better taste good at the end of the day, right? But I find the flavour rather dull, and same with the icing. I would not mind paying that much for a cupcake if the flavour was exciting and vibrant. Like, why not have a chili-chocolate cupcakes? Or a banana-chocolate cupcake with rich banana-chocolate flavour? I also didn't like the candy decoration on the icing - it was too hard to eat! I would rather go to a hole in the wall bakery with okay presentation but crazy-good flavour to their cupcakes. And based on most of the reviews, I think most people would agree.

I bought some cupcakes from the cupcake shoppe for my birthday and here goes my review.
The first thing I will say postively is that the actual cake part is nice and moist, and quite fresh.
The second postive point is that there are a variety of flavors for to satisfy everyone and this is important as there are some shops that do not make enough of a variety.
However, the buttercream on the cupcake for my taste buds anyway, is not sweet enough, it needs more sugar. Don't get me wrong, its a good buttercream made well, silky and buttery but for me, I need a little more sweet.
And I think that is the thing about cupcakes, they are so subjective. Some people like really sweet icing, others not so much and it depends on how sweet your sweet tooth really is.
While I felt these were not sugary enough for me, I also can say that the grocery store bought ones are just gross and overwhelmingly sweet, so hope that helps.
