I stopped in here mainly because I had some Downtown Oak Park gift certificates that were expiring soon, but I'm glad I did! The salesman was knowledgeable about the shoes and gave me some good recommendations based on the type of running shoes I like and the fact that I pronate. He also found a pair that was on clearance! So I was able to get some Wigwam socks as well.

Also, this store will take your old running shoes and donate them to Share Your Soles for you, so keep that in mind so you can bring your old kicks when you go to buy new ones!

Running stores are the ONLY place I will buy my running shoes.  Why?  Because the staff actually run and they know what I'm talking about when I say stability control and overpronate.

I went in to see if they carry the new Mizuno stability control shoe.  While they didn't carry that specific shoe in stock, I tried on a comparable Asics style.  They laced them up for me and even let me take it for a quick spin, I mean sprint, down the street (almost like test-driving a car).  That shoe didn't exactly work out for me, and they offered to order the Mizuno Alchemy...but I still need to try it on before I can commit to purchasing it.

Really great staff, very helpful and knowledgeable.

I want to like The Competitive Foot. I really do! It's awesome that Oak Park even has a store like this. For accessories like water bottles, pedometers, watches, shirts and Smart Wool socks, this place rocks.

But for a casual, bum-kneed runner like me, I have no idea what shoe to buy and need some guidance. They were unable to give me any good advice besides, "make sure it feels good." My feet pronate pretty bad when running and they didn't even watch my stride in the shoes I asked to try. The shoes I bought here felt great at the store, but not on a 5k jog.

I really like Naperville Running Company or Fleet Feet much better. They watch you walk, jog, run and even video tape you to discover what shoe works best with your stride and your particular biomechanics. I end up with far less knee and ankle pain after getting fitted somewhere that takes the time to do this.

The Competitive Foot does a lot of really nice community-building like hosting weekly runs from the store, doing sidewalk sales, etc. But when it comes to selling running shoes, I think they could do better.

I stopped in yesterday looking for a new pair of New Balance 606's.  A sales associate asked if he could help me, I told what I was looking for, his response was, "we don't carry those lower cost shoes", in a very snooty tone.  Didn't offer another walking shoe for me or any other help.  I was rather offended.  So much for shopping locally.  I went to a New Balance store in Oak Brook, they did not have the shoe, BUT offered to order it for me AND ship to me for free!!  I now know where I will go for my walking shoes, not Competitve Foot.

This is a very impressive little store. I just wish it was bigger, with more selection, which is why I gave it only 4 stars - and I'm still debating since maybe it's not fair considering how much they do w/ their little space.

The young salespeople here always amaze me with how good they are at fitting shoes. I am not a very big runner and I spend very little time researching brands and styles etc. So I like to be able to rely on the store to sift out the stuff for me.

Lately I have switched over to barefoot running and I was even able to buy a pair of Vibram Fivefingers here. It's so nice to be able to try things on rather than relying on mail order. Plus I really like to support the small businesses in my neighborhood. Anything I can walk to - so green and so convenient. Yay.

Once I was looking for a particular shirt that they did not have in the store, but I knew they carried the brand (Saucony), so I emailed the store and sent a link to the product I wanted. They special-ordered the shirt and matched the online price, and I walked in a couple days later and picked it up. Yay again.

Final note, although this is a small boutique-looking place, it does not have boutique prices. It's very reasonable. I have bought clothes, shoes, accessories, a gym bag, all for good prices and/or on sale. I get coupons from their email list too. Damn. Ok, I give up, they deserve 5 stars.

Impressive this little store is not.  While the service is friendly, the selection has gotta be the worst I've ever seen in a running store - no shoes, no running shirts, no running shorts, NOTHING.  They've got maybe 2 pairs of shorts to sell.  I went in looking to spend some cash on a bunch of running stuff I need and managed to buy a visor, and nothing else.  Bah.  Not going to return.

Disclaimer -- I'm not much of an athlete.  I try to walk about 10 miles a week, so I get a new pair of sneakers (yes, I call them sneakers) once a year or so.  This is where I get them.  Normally I'm a discount shoe shopper, but sometimes you need full service, and the service here is excellent. They'll bring you 17 pairs if that is what you require before deciding.  For such a small space there is a great selection of shoes for men, woman and children, plus athletic wear and socks.  As a bonus, a great location on the newly-repaved Marion Street in lovely leafy Oak Park.  Check out the sidewalk sale in August.

This place is nice.  I got a great pair of sneakers here; I had wanted an upgrade for a more supportive shoe.  I also was looking for a watch but they only had a couple to choose from so I will have to go elsewhere for that.  The service is very friendly but not necessarily helpful--I don't know too much about running shoes so I was relying on them for that, but it was mostly just them telling me to try them out and saying it's most important how I feel in them.  I agree with that but some information would be useful too.
