I can't believe I have found the perfect watering hole!!!  I can go to the Common for lunch, after work drinks or a night out on the weekend.  Mhy girls and I are already planning our next "Common outing"!

As sad as it may sound, my friends and I are usually pretty psyched when we hear of a new place to check out for drinks and sociables. It's almost like we're a little A.D.D. for new bar & pub discoveries - "ooh. That's shiny! Wait. What's that over there?!"

So upon hearing of the Grand re-opening of The Common - we were down.

This past Friday was essentially The Common's public opus since its move from 124th street and most of us were pretty impressed. The décor is nice (similar to the old location); the square footage is at least double from previous; and for those who complained about the size of the old dance floor, this one is probably 3 times bigger.

The raised DJ booth is situated just slightly off the dance floor with a pretty cool bookshelf backdrop filled with (what looked like) a ton of records and books. Black Curtains covered the outer wall of the dance floor that made it feel more like private party than a bar.

Booth seating, Bar stools and tables were positioned fairly effectively so that casual walkarounds/cruises to the bar, dance floor or bathrooms were pretty accessible.

And perhaps being the inaugural weekend for the "new" common as it was, the crowd was quite a bit of a different hodgepodge of what is usually hipster heaven. But I'm confident once the glow of initial fanfare dies down, their faithful demographic will surge back to their familiar and conquer again as The Common's core clientele.

I wanted to go out and get a taste of Edmonton's night life before I left. My friend and I decided to come here at the suggestion of a local Yelper. And what a great suggestion it was! Apparently the Common is in an area where there aren't a lot of other bars, so people come here for the Common and not just for a drinking establishment. It's a chic little lounge with ample seating, but also room for mingling and a bit of dancing for those who are happily impaired and enjoying the night.

We arrived around 9:30 so that we could grab a table. There was a charity event going on that evening, and I'm so glad that I crashed the party because every single person in that venue was good looking. Either Edmonton has this untapped market of ridiculously good looking people, or the host is ONLY friends with good looking people. I also learned throughout the night that everyone at the bar was over 22 AND educated! You never see that in Calgary!!

I can't rave more about this place. It was a perfect ending to my week in Edmonton. The drinks were reasonably priced too - $5.25 high balls. I definitely took advantage of that. And the truffle oil popcorn? To die for!

Love this place. The Common, I'm coming back to Edmonton just for you.

The Common is one of the best clubs/lounges in the city, for sure, and one of my regular spots. The room is long and narrow with high booths on one side and low seats on the other, with the bar and bathrooms all the way at the back. The art on the walls is always nice and constantly rotating to keep things fresh and interesting.

They usually play great music (hip-hop and disco for me please), and even when they play something that isn't exactly my cup of tea, it's not something so terrible that I can't stand it. The DJs know what they're doing. On the bad side, the dance floor is absolutely tiny. Like, eight people could dance on there comfortably, and it still really isn't that comfortable.

The crowd is definitely more mature than folks at most of the other clubs in the city, so the vibe is much more chill and relaxed and positive.

Drink prices are fair and there is a food menu, although the only thing I've had is the truffle oil popcorn. Staff, from the bouncers to door girl to servers, are generally nice.

The place usually doesn't get jumping until later in the night, around 23:30.

So why am I giving a four star review instead of a five? While I do love The Common, there are a few points that take it down for me:

-$5 cover. Every night (Thurs Fri Sat). Even if there's not a special event going on. I don't like paying cover just for the pleasure of standing inside a place and paying more money on drinks/food.

-Limited seating means you might end up standing all night if you don't get there early enough.

-No coat check, which is really inconvenient, especially when it's a) winter and b) such a small place that you might not even have a table for the night.

-There are only two bathrooms of the single person variety, and they are both unisex, so there is almost always a wait, even though the club doesn't hold that many people!

The Common is proof for me that Yelp really works. This venue deserves all of the five star reviews it has.

I never like getting to a bar too early in the evening and finding out that awkwardly you're the only group there. However there was a charity event going on earlier in the night and it didn't take long for a real crowd to grow. At the same time, it never got uncomfortably crowded.

Maybe I'm just used to being treated like garbage at most nightclubs but I was surprised by the friendly, attentive nature of the staff. The server came by our table multiple times in the night to make sure we were doing alright. It was nice knowing you didn't always need to stand by the bar the entire night to get service.

Overall I found The Common was chic, fun, affordable, and unique. I will definitely be making future plans here in the future. My only critique is that I wish they had a coat check. If we hadn't snagged a table at the beginning of the night, I wouldn't have wanted to carry it around all night.

Want a great night spot without the clingy just-turned-18 crowd? Nothing against them, but occasionally you're going to want a nice place to mingle, talk, and still enjoy amazing music. The DJ really didn't let us down, and he kept a great mix of music to keep you moving in your seat.... or on the floor - hey, don't let us stop you!

The lounge itself is fairly small, with the DJ located as soon as you walk in, seating lining the left and right walls and a simple walkway leading you straight to the bar at the back.

When we went on Thursday night, there were drink specials on, and halfway through the evening, truffle popcorn was brought out for everyone to nibble on. The Common also has a fairly decent menu selection, but unfortunately that will have to wait for a follow up visit.

The atmosphere was fantastic, the staff were great, and I will definitely be returning!

This is my favourite night spot in Edmonton. Why? The sound system is a big reason. While it's a relatively small and intimate lounge, the owners haven't skimped on the sound system. The clarity of the sound in the lounge is incredible. As a test, a friend of mine and I were playing with Shazam on our iPhones the other night and the application had no difficulty determining what the tracks being played by the DJ were. That isn't a feat you could pull off in many local bars. The system is also such that while it's loud, it's not blaring.

The sound is good and so is the music. The bar is run by DJs for DJs and it really shows. Always great music to be heard at the Common: house, disco, hip hop. The staff is always friendly.

The food at the lounge is also excellent with a nice range of affordable entrees and appetizers. They usually have a wine and cheese plate special every Wednesday.

There are also rotating art and fashion shows taking place at the lounge on a regular basis.

The Common isn't along a strip of bars so it's definitely a destination location. However, it's well worth checking out.

The Common is a nice little bar in downtown Edmonton. The space is really nice itself with booth seating on the right when you come in, couch style seating to the left and a bar at the back with really nice local art being hung on the walls (bonus on being able to purchase the pieces to). There is also a DJ booth, little dance floor and disco ball.

I want to mainly talk about the food though. Do yourself a favor and get the truffle oil popcorn - oh man, best popcorn ever. It comes in a medium size bowl (good for sharing) and is salted perfectly. I also had the burger sliders and a chocolate lava brownie dish for dessert and both were great.

The Common is a really neat place - the direct opposite (in a good way) of the huge bars that are common (no pun intended) everywhere else. You gotta give it a try (oh...did I mention to get the popcorn).

Great little space, good beats and eye catching local artwork on display.  Awesome food the sliders and the truffle butter popcorn are perfectly paired with a bottle of ice cold Innis and Gunn!  It's all in the details...and this place gets it right.
