Snobby Chicagoan finds Chicago quality brunch tucked way up North in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That's right, this place is amazing.
You order at the counter from a few items. Everything sounded delish but I settled on something I didn't quite understand but intriguing enough to take the plunge.
Les Oeufs Habitant
3 Fried Eggs, Montreal Bagel Croque Monsieur w/ Montreal Bacon, Oka Cheese & Maple Baked Beans
I had no idea what I was about to get but all I know is if I return I am not even going to consider getting anything else. That being said, I'm sure the rest of the menu is equally delish.

Despite always needing some clarification on the menu options from the staff (big words, lots of different cuisines melding together etc etc), I love everything that I've tasted here! I've been a few times, and each experience is fantastic - the staff are helpful, they deal with allergies well, and everything is top-notch in the taste department.
They are always busy, so be prepared for a bit of a wait (well worth it, though) and do pay attention to the staff as they'll make sure that people are seated in the order they've arrived. It's a small shop, but you'll be so impressed with the food, you won't mind as much. -

A favorite of many Haligonians and always worth the wait.
With a total of perhaps seven tables, the menu is well priced and reflects a broad spectrum of tastes and flavors from across Canada.
My son, a ten-year old going concern, is particularly fond of the "Elvis" which is a careful combination of waffles, peanut butter, bacon, and banana. The coffee is great and I particularly like the no-nonsense style of paying befogging eating. If you can get a seat, it is worth the adventure. -

Highly recommended. I'm a fan of breakfast and I'm stingy with my stars. This is a great find. I was in Halifax for two days - ate breakfast there the first day and was back again on the second.
Its a somewhat limited menu, and since its not a large place it can get crowded quickly. But what they do they do very well. Good service and good coffee as well. I recommend the McCoastal; being from Texas I hope to try the huevos rancheros or one of the variations the next time I'm in. -

Coastal Cafe never fails to disappoint! I have been there twice and I am always impressed by the menu - it is small and selective but everything on it is delectable, and they offer a range of tastes and cater to both vegetarians and meat-a-tarians. Order at the bar and sit where you can manage to grab a seat! Great portion sizes too, although heavy on the grease at times when it could be pared back (say, in an omlette or fried eggs).
Be prepared to wait if you go with groups of more than two, there is limited seating but it makes the service that much better, meals are ready in no time! Coffee and espresso are excellent, and they have a great variety of coffee add-ins at the bar.
I will go back again and again, love the amazing food and the atmosphere (and the bar up front to people-watch!) -

I have been to Coastal Cafe many times, and it is truly consistently excellent. They are always changing their delicious menu so you can't get bored, and always have a couple vegetarian options. The service is really good, even when they're busy but if you're not careful about timing lunch correctly, it can be tough to get a seat! I find going a little bit earlier than noon usually means less wait for a table.
I took a friend here last week and both of our meals were perfect. I had a beans and rice that was spicy and filling, with tortilla chips on the side for dipping. She had a chicken burger with those delicious homemade fries. In the past I've enjoyed pad thai, the butter chicken nanwich, seafood curry and several breakfast items. I am drooling just thinking about it.
Check it out, and I'm sure you'll love it. -

I can't even begin to name all the dishes I have tried at Coastal. But what's important, it that everything has been consistently interesting, fresh, and delicious. From the McCoastal breakfast sammie (which reversed my distaste for sausage!) to the more daring dishes like the BBQ inspired Durty South, I have never been disappointed (ok their cappucinos aren't the best, but the dark coffee is always great). Coastal is surprising and cerative and I LOVE IT!

Snap me out of it, the Elvis waffle has my craving crying it's baby blues. Served with banana, bacon, syrup and peanut butter, the definition of dessert as breakfast is forever served.
The simple space and order at the counter system might make an unsuspecting customer believe the food would be of the coffee shop variety, but one look at the menu will have you singing a different tune: an overwhelming, "what in the world am I going to order" kinda one.
Seriously, it's been a couple of months since my inaugural visit, and I'm itching for a return. Plus the coffee is magic!Listed in: Sprinkled With Haligonian…

Not much seating and a little too hipster for me. But I'm rating on the food that I had and i most definitely go back -

Beyond delicious.
My husband & I made a shopping trip to Halifax two weeks ago & decided to eat at the cafe because we'd read so many great reviews here in Yelp. & the reviews didn't lie. This place is a true gem.
I was shocked at how small it was & although the place could be a little more pulled together & spruced up, the food more than made up for any lacklustre decor.
My husband ordered the chorizo burger, which was topped with guacamole & I believe a corn relish. If my memory serves me correctly I chose the turkey panini. Last time I checked the menu wasn't up on their website so I'm relying on my horrible memory. About halfway through our meal we looked at each other & declared that it was the best food we'd ever eaten. Fresh, made with care, good portion sizes & extras! Best of all [besides the flavor] - the price! Who would have thought you could get an amazing chorizo burger with great toppings, wonderful home fries & a great salad for under 11 bucks?! Baffling to us!
We'll def. head back to The Coastal Cafe when in the city. Great meal, great price [& wonderful service too]! -
Review from Adam S.
OK, so it seems I've been remiss with my weekend visits to The Coastal Cafe. After visiting earlier today, it seems obvious to me that the best time to eat here is when you have a free weekday.
When I walked into The Coastal, it felt quite surreal. Gone were the dozen or so people milling about the small dining room, sitting down and waiting to sit down. Instead, I found myself in a nearly empty room with a counter staff waiting for someone to show up.
After ordering, I sat down and started to feel a little odd about being in such an empty restaurant. So I played Tiny Wings on my iPhone. (Really, what did people do in awkward situations, before smartphones?)
It wasn't long before my meal arrived. I had a baked orange and poppyseed pancake with honey marscapone and candied walnuts. It was ohmygodsogood. My only wish is that it had a little bit more maple syrup, as things got a little dry near the end. It's a *big* pancake.
Another thing that caught my attention... When I had finished my glass of apple juice, the server offered me water, instead of asking me if I wanted to buy another glass of apple juice. I liked that and appreciated that the server was trying to satisfy my needs rather than the restaurant's needs.
I noticed on the "Not Breakfast" menu that The Coastal serves a Butter Chicken Naanwich panini. I think I will be back again soon.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This wasn't bad but it wasn't my favourite either. I had two fried eggs served on top of a tostada (crispy corn tortilla) with salsa and guacamole. It was pretty good, but I thought the price was a little steep for what you got.

You guys! Apparently the nutella muffin is back! This is huge. It's my official muffin.
I like more than the muffin though. I'm a big fan of the huevos rancheros and have trouble ordering anything else (I have and I've enjoyed it, but I can't recall what it was). The menu changes often, but I always return to my rancheros for super tasty times. Take the extra veggies if they offer it. The coffee is quite good.
Someday, I will be brave enough to try the Elvis.
My biggest problem with this joint is that getting a seat is a total crapshoot. It's tiny and there aren't a lot of tables. If you're not there early or just as someone is leaving, forget it. Since you order at the counter, it's kind of confusing to figure out if you're supposed to order first and then get a table or snag a table and then order. A clearly indicated system would be nice.
Bonus: if you ever have a chance to eat dinner here, DO IT. Don't think about it, just do it. I had a New Year's Eve dinner here in 2009 and it was amazing. The other customers provided dinner theatre (like the guy whose date abandoned him before the main course), the staff was wonderful and the food was superb.Listed in: North Ending, Nom nom nom

Review from Rhia P.
This place is divine. A regularly-updated menu of delicious and creative brunch and breakfast menus awaits. The place is small, cozy and welcoming, the servers are fab, and the location is handy.
Coastal has, in some ways, become a victim of its own popularity. Unless you arrive early, you're sure to have a wait. But do wait for a table, it's well worth it. Besides, the wait will give you time to contemplate the lengthy hand-written menu before you order at the counter.
Classics like The Elvis, the Huevos Rancheros (now in three varieties), the McCoastal, as well as seasonal specials like the recent scrambled-egg-duck-gravy-poutine mean you'll want to keep coming back to try everything.
If you're in the mood for something lighter, they make a mean coffee and incredible muffins.
I concur with people who've said that you should watch for their occasional dinners. Incredible food. Incredible atmosphere. -

I thoroughly enjoy The Coastal, and often encourage friends to drop by for something slightly more exciting than Cora's or Emma's.
However, there are several things which keep me from being a devoted, weekly visitor....
First off, the hipster vibe is a huge turn off. Seating is way too limited, and you'll be hardpressed to find seating on weekends. Also, the menu needs to be expanded. There are many great ideas on here, and whomever created this menu is obviously a very talented individual. He/she has taken popular breakfast menu items and added a touch of class and originality. It's time to search for more great ideas, to keep me comming for more.
So overall, definatly better than Cora's and Emma's, however, not perfect.
Pros - Great variations on classic breakfast menu
- Best breakfast restaurant in town
Cons - Annoying pretentious atmosphere
- Way too small
- Menu need to be expanded. -

I was recently dragged to the Coastal Cafe for the promise of a butter chicken naanwich, but when I arrived, the naanwich was nowhere to be found. However, I was still not disappointed.
The greatest trouble was picking only one delicious item off the menu. Visitors will also reach a similar dilemma as the menu is quite varied and expansive. I chose the big ass bacon cheeseburger (10.50$) with an orange banana strawberry juice (1.50$.)
The bacon cheeseburger was both flavourful and moist, but the true star were the french fries. The fries had a hint of rosemary, which gave me some new ideas for the future, as well as showing me that The Coastal Cafe pays close attention to the details.
Be that as it may, I was not so fortunate in my choice of drink. The orange banana strawberry juice was a little too wild for my taste and tasted too much of cloying orange. Next time, I think I will try the smoothie...
The only other drawback was the noise level. At times, I could barely hear my friend's conversation, and at others, it was almost too quiet.
All in all, I am looking forward to my next visit to try what is new and exciting on the menu! -

Delicious food, always fresh and always tasty. It's a fairy small restaurant so it gets full quite easily. The "Frere Jacques" is one of my delights when I'm hungover and in need of an "unhealthy" breakfast - this is the one with eggs, fries, gravy and oka cheese. Try it. It's worth it.
The lunch menu is also good. -

A little expensive, but worth every penny.
The portion sizes are large, with really nice presentation, and the place is cute as a button. There isn't a whole lot of seating space, as it is in a tiny little building, but it's worth the wait!
I will defiantly being eating here again. -

This is a review for lunch. I live around the corner from the Coastal, and I love being able to stop by for lunch. The menu is limited (even more so if it is after 2 pm and there is no breakfast, or if you are a vegetarian). The food is always well-prepared and tasty.

I wanted to love this place, I really really did, but there was just too many "meh's" to warrant a rave review. That being said, some of these may be a "it's not you, it's me" kind of thing. I was totally prepared for breakfast wait, and wasn't surprised or bothered by having to stand for about 20 minutes before I could sit down. The staff are lovely and try to make sure that you get to eat asap, by getting you to order as you wait. It's a small place, and I don't mind small so much.
What really ground my gears though was that the door, on a chilly February morning, was propped open for minutes at a time by various people trying to decide if they were going to come in or leave. Jane's has dealt well with this by providing a little vestibule with a heavy curtain to block the wind. Coastal REALLY needs to employ something similar. I was wearing parka as a blanket during my breakfast, really not cool. And it means that your food cools down in 10 seconds when it actually arrives, which really does the food a disservice. My eggs were frigid, equally not cool.
So onto the food itself--again, I was willing myself to like it more than I actually did. I had Eggs Oslo (smoked salmon with poached eggs), and there were just too many competing flavours on the plate. I couldn't even taste the salmon because there was cranberry jam all over it. That should've been in a pot on the side, rather than dumped all over my eggs and salmon. There was apple saucy stuff under my potato roasti as well, plus bread on the side. All just too much. Boyfriend had eggs with asiago, pesto and lamb meatballs and his was really good though.
I will definitely be trying Coastal again, likely in the summer and when I'm not fighting off a cold, I just think it wasn't the right weekend to give her a try. I have faith that I'll love it the second time around. -

If you're in search of weekend brunch and want to try something new and different - this is it. I suggest reviewing the menu online before you go, because it's going to be a tough choice and you'll be ordering at the counter. Personally, I always feel on the spot in those situations, and rarely order well.
It's a busy spot and a small space, so be ready to wait . You'll have to lurk to grab a table when one becomes free.
I've had fantastic cappuccinos here, and the food is tasty and unique. Where else in Halifax can you get a "Durty South" brekkie: bbq eggs and pulled pork on sweet potato cornbread, topped with crispy tator shavings, and served with beans (see photo). Brunch is pricy, but you're paying for creativity and quality ingredients. They also use locally sourced foods wherever possible.
I haven't yet tried their "Not Breakfast" menu, but will make a point to do so soon. -

These guys are doing breakfast at a pretty high level.
It's a small place, so expect to wait a bit for a seat, but you can grab a latte while you wait.

I remember reading about the opening of the Coastal and thinking "I need to check this place out". And I did, and have been back multiple times since. They make great mochas (including a rarely seen white chocolate version which will never replace the standard for me ... but I enjoy having a choice).
"The Steph" (high-quality granola, yogurt, warm mixed berries) was my favourite for a long time ... and then I discovered the McCoastal: a big, juicy, slightly messy (and totally worth it) pile of breakfast deliciousness! I have also enjoyed what I call the "Los" meals (Toros Locos and Huevos Rancheros), and they never fail to have at least one special that distracts me from the regular menu.
I dig the Coastal and I would go there even more than I do but for one small problem: the place is really small. And with such fine vittles, it fills up rapidly (especially on the weekends). I've lost count of occasions where I swung by only to be forced to break my fast elsewhere (or when folks I recommended the place to complained that they "tried to go" but couldn't get a spot.) I know the restaurant business is a a dicey one at times - better to stay small and turn people away than get big and have quality or service suffer. But I can't help thinking that the Coastal could be twice as big, and they would be twice as busy ... and I would like them twice as much.Listed in: Mocha Madness!

The only thing that stops me from giving the Coastal 5 stars is the space of the restaurant. It is too small and I don't like having to wait outside or being jammed inside.
We LOVE the huevos rancheros. The salsa should be bottled and mass produced. it is the best salsa in the world. This dish is my personal favourite and I could eat it every day.
I have been here for breakfast many times and everything I've had has been consistently AMAZING. Gourmet breakfast food at its finest. Even when I asked for a simple bagel (not on menu) for my daughter they brought it out on a lovely plate with fruit and jelly. It looked beautiful. I love the coffee here too which i was told is from Laughing Whale from Lunenburg. Best coffee I've ever had in my life.
The staff at Coastal are really nice and the service is quick.
Now please expand so we don't have to fight over a table!! -

What do you get when a fave local chef gets sick of fine dining and quits to open his own little cafe in the North End?
The best ever-changing breakfast menu in the city.
Griffin's breakfast creations are the designer jeans of the breakfast world. But you found the jeans on the clearance rack at Winners (and it's not too good to be true!).
*I gave this 4/5 because there is ALWAYS a lineup. Sure, this is technically a good thing, but I HATE waiting for breakfast. -
Review from Ben B.
This i truly the home of incredible, creative and delicious food in Halifax and if you haven't been to experience it, go NOW.
Their huge menu is split between two chalkboards on the wall boasting a full breakfast offering and a delectable lunch selection. While there's no culinary theme to the menu, I always appreciate that I can get Thai, Mexican, and comfort food all in the same place. Give everything a good read then place your order up at the cash - you'll be pleasantly surprised by how cheap everything is.
If there's one issue with this place, it's the lack of space. You'll be sitting pretty much on top of other people if you can get a table at all. I've given up on weekend visits because I don't have it in me to stand out on the street waiting, or lurk over people while the eat. That said, I've never had a problem during the lunch hours on weekdays. -
Review from Leo A.

I was at the Coastal for Saturday brunch and the food was so good that it inspired me to write my first Yelp review. Being a half-Mexican in Halifax, I find the best Mexican food tends to require staying home and my expectations for Latino food at a Maritime restaurant are low to say the least. So when I heard that some of the best Mexican food in town can be had a breakfast food joint mostly famous for pastries and good coffee, I was skeptical. Truth is the chef at Coastal understands how to serve up complex, well-balanced flavors, Latino and otherwise.
If you have a hankering for spice, I highly recommend the Huevos Los Toritos, a deconstructed breakfast burrito with poached eggs, fresh guacamole atop a mole-braised shredded beef. Flavors were fresh and varied with every bite. I've also had the Huevos Ultimos, another vibrant layering of duck sausage pozole with poached eggs. Not for one that does not like spice, but offering more combos of flavor than just hotness.
Other breakfast offerings are freshly prepared with an emphasis on pure flavors. Open-faced omelettes and sausage-accompanied egg dishes file past out of the kitchen at a mouthwatering pace. The food is fresh, expertly designed, and best of all doesn't leave one hungry.
Wish the restaurant had more seating as folks often camp out for tables, but the cramped dining space is worth it to get some of the best food in town. -
Review from Sue A.
This is easily my favourite breakfast in town. Downtown meets uptown at the Coastal, a small, cozy space off Robie Street. Owned and operated by a former chef from Bish, one of Halifax's best known restaurants, the Coastal offers delicious, upscale breakfasts in a casual setting. This ain't no typical North end diner.
The Tex-mex influenced breakfast menu consists mostly of egg dishes with a few things like French toast and waffles thrown in.
Sometimes I look at the menu and think for these prices (mostly $9 and up) maybe I should be cooking up some eggs at home. After all, I could buy three dozen eggs for that price. But there's no way I could recreate the culinary magic that appears on the plates here. It's the little touches like the chipotle cream corn and the homemade guac and pico de gallo that make the difference. Even a simple dish like French toast known as Pommes Pain D'ore at the Coastal is elevated to heavenly status with a delicious blend of sumptuous flavours. You can tell these dishes are made with love!
The portions are generous. For example, the Harvester breakfast could easily be a serving and a half and the Huevos Rancheros versions are made with three eggs making them very filling. I always make sure I arrive on an empty stomach.
I often bring my kids here and the sides menu is a plus for us. At 75 cents an egg, it's like having a kids menu.
Seating can be tight, especially on holiday weekends. There is now a waiting list for seating when the cafe is busy. When ordering you say you want to eat in and they will keep tabs on the tables and find you a suitable spot. That being said, going with two people is perfect and four is manageable. If you're more than four, try to go in the off-peak hours like right at opening or later in the afternoon. -

If you can get a table at this tiny spot on Yonge - you're set for a great experience. It's my new fave brunch spot in the city. Coffee - always made with love - and always perfect.
The presentation of the food is always gorgeous - something you don't normally expect from brunch, but I've not come to appreciate at 11 in the AM.
I highly recommend this spot.. although maybe I shouldn't because then I don't run the risk of waiting ages for a table. -

I finally made it into the Coastal for a meal earlier this week, and boy, was it a delicious vegetarian surprise.
Not many places in this town serve up soy bacon and sausage, so when I ordered the McCoastal sammy sans meat, I was delighted to be offered a veggie version of the meat treats that usually come with this menu item.
The food was quick and the service was patient (I was very indecisive). My only qualm is having to order at the counter. I enjoy mulling over a menu, and the chalk boards aren't necessarily conducive to a relaxed perusal, as you chance getting in another patron's way.
The McCoastal was super tasty; served on a puffy white bun, with havarti and a creamy home sauce, topped with two eggs and the cherry on top, soy sausage!
I shall definitely return to this grand breakfast joint, serving up the best meal of the day until mid afternoon daily. Perhaps I'll even head in today to sample one of their other offerings.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Sunday mornings have never been better. With the end of another week, it all about the rainy day remedy of a morning at The Coastal.
Its a quaint little North End cafe with the right attitude. The Coastal exists on its own sweet merit, and remains as unpretentious as they come. Full-bodied plates for both breakfast and lunch meals are what people come for, and the hot bevies aren't bad either.
Breakfast here is s u p e r. I've been into the "The Steph" lately-- a
mixed berry salad with granola and honey vanilla yogurt for 8 bucks. There tons of fresh options for day starting meals that stray from the monotony of everyday breakfasts. I digress. Take for example, "The Elvis", which is a buttermilk waffle sandwich w/ peanut butter, bananas, and bacon, and maple syrup. 10 dollas later, and its worth every glorious bite. (Veggies: sans bacon) The menu is just a positive burst of delicious to read through, with the fresh and flavorful innovations. I've never been disappointed with a meal.
Anyone looking for a nice, casual spot for some grub should head to The Coastal. Its delicious, cosy and has a great overall attitude. -

I don't know what I could have been thinking giving 'Coastal Cafe' only 4 stars at first; this place is awesome! I have yet to try a single thing at this restaurant that didn't taste phenomenal. Even when i'm with someone and they order something bizarre, and I think to myself 'oh, you're gonna regret that...' - It still sends up tasting delicious!
It was tough but most recently I migrated away from my beloved Los Huevos Rancheros and tried out The Elvis. Think: Buttermilk waffle sandwich with PB, Bananas, and bacon inside and drenched in maple syrup all over. Oh yeah. mmmmm.
I gotta throw some kudos out to the staff too. I am always immensely impressed with any establishment that manages to run like a well oiled machine without the aid of definitive rolls ie: bartender, barista, server, hostess. Everyone at The Coastal seems to just chip in taking orders, running food, clearing, cleaning and well i'm sure, pretty much anything. Well done you little jacks and jills of all trades!1 Previous Review: Show all »

It's always wonderful to find a place that's just as awesome...or better... than it was when it first opened. It's a small place, but it's huge when it comes to flavour and variety in the menu. Breakfast features The Elvis -Buttermilk Waffle Sandwich w/ Peanut Butter, Bananas, and Bacon, drenched in Maple syrup, Los Huevos Rancheros - 3 Fried on Crisp Corn Tortillas Topped with Sauce Ranchero, Jack and Cheddar, then Topped with Guacamole and Salsa and everything in between.
And trust me, you'll be back for a really fantastic lunch too, Menues change and vary depending on what Chef Mark Giffin finds at the farmer's market and from local producers.
I stopped in today just for a delicious cappuccino but was entirely won over by the lunch menu...Honey Chipotle Duck Tostados with quac & mole cream, curried leg of lamb naanwich, lamb meat ball & provolone ciabatta, tofu peanut green curry...I'm still drooling and that's not even half the menu! -

I started to feel left out of the group when all my fellow Reviewers had given a review of this Cafe and I haven't actually been to it before.
So naturally I had to check out this place and see what all the fuss was about. Well everyone was right! This tiny cafe is worth going to. They have a great breakfast and I was pleasantly surprised to find out Saturdays and Sundays are all day Breakfast days! I had the "Jamaican Me Crazy" simply because it had roasted Sweet Potatoes. My favorite! And they did this dish well.
The customer service is pleasant and helpful. They aren't too loud, in your face, looking negative or anything. They really help add to the nice atmosphere. I will give the same warning others have given however. And that is Saturday's and Sunday's are very busy days. This isn't one of those secret treasures. This is a treasure everyone knows about and visits religiously. I don't know how I lucked into having a great seat as soon as I walked in when I did. But if I didn't, I can honestly say that this place is worth the wait if you need to hang around before a table is available.
Coastal Cafe is about a twenty minute walk from downtown which is good. In my mind, if they were downtown, they would be even more busy and I'd never go. Its a very cute Cafe with amazing food for really good prices. Definitely check it out and be patient for a table. -

It doesn't look like much from the outside, or really from the inside either, but what's on your plate is always sublime. I'm not saying it's a dump - far from it - but this simple café has an awesome, ever-changing menu that will blow your brunch socks off. Portion sizes are not huge, so if you're looking to cram your hung-over belly full of greasy eggs and flapjacks, this is probably not the best choice. If, however, you want a slammin' good poached egg atop a perfectly fried baguette slice drizzled with maple mustard dressing with a side salad of local greens and goat cheese, step right up. Lots of local ingredients, conscientious meat, and veggie options to please thoughtful eaters. I whole-heartedly approve.

I like the atmosphere at Coastal - laid back and a little "indie", but I really like that it's got a great and, frankly, adventurous menu - for Halifax. I've only been for breakfast or brunch, but I love the fact that they have huevos rancheros on the menu, even if I was a little disappointed with the execution. I prefer my huevos on a soft, rather than a crisp, tortilla, but hey, that's just me. Good coffee here, super hot (I like it hot, but this is crazy hot). It's a little tricky to get a table, or have an intimate conversation once you get one, but hey, the indie kids don't mind laying everything out there, so why should I? Great local business, deserves lots of support.

Delicious, inexpensive lunches...one of my new favorite spots in Halifax.
