Saw "Sound of Music" this weekend - what a treat!  The acting is good, but holy moly 'Maria' can belt it out!  The first 30 minutes of the show is like a Maria showcase, and she certainly does not disappoint!  Added to the enjoyment/excitement was the fact that my daughter knows several of the cast/chorus members extremely well - they drew from the St. Albert Children's Theatre crew pretty heavily this go round, and nicely done at that - all of the music was incredible!  They've already extended the run by a week and hopefully by another week, so there should be tickets available (although the first few shows have been sold out I think) - an extremely well-done classic!
Oh, and kudos to the set designers too - have to say I was wondering how the heck they'd do so many different sets, and wow they did a great job!

Saw A Midsummer Nights Dream tonight. The cast was amazing. I always look to see how they did Puck when I go. Puck in this production was funny and agile and impish but loads of fun. The entire cast made this a lot of fun. Everyone was laughing (as they should have) and clearly enjoying the performance. Well acted. Well produced. Loads of fun. Exceptionally entertaining. Go see it!

I love the Citadel. It's a nice venue for live shows, but I find the layout of it kind of odd. In any case, it's easy to get to by LRT and close to all the amenities downtown, which is a perfect reason to make a play part of an evening out. A few years ago I also attended a New Years party here, with Shout Out Out Out as the main band. My friends & I had a great time, even though the food was really poor. I love that there's always wine & cocktails available before a performance, but I wonder why they let the Second Cup clothes. Sometimes I wouldn't mind a latte during a play on a cold Edmonton winter night! The Citadel gets 4 stars from me, because I want to support the arts, but I also want them the facility to get a little more modern.

I've been to a number of events at the Citadel... theatre, concerts, speakers. The theatres here are great and I love the indoor garden, especially in the winter.

As much as I love going to the theatre, it's not cheap. The Citadel offers rush tickets at 50% off, and they also have pay-what-you-can Sundays for the first performance of each show. I love that they do something to make the theatre a bit more accessible.

I fell in love with theatre and musicals at an early age and the citadel has been a big part of my growth and love with theatre all the way along. Over the years they have done several upgrades to the facility but the theatres have remained the same.

First there is the Shoctor Theatre. This is the most traditional of the three with the stage in front, room for an orchestra pit, and then the seats rising at an average incline out in front of the stage. In general this one is used for the bigger productions (like My Fair Lady, Oliver, Beauty and the Beast, etc.). I like that the seats are not too close together - there is lots of room for knees and elbows! My favorite seats are rows B-D numbers 12-22.

Next there is the more contemporary Maclab Theatre. When you walk in you are at the top of seats of the theatre and everything is below. The seats are at a very steep incline (the next person's head is at your knees) and then the stage is flat at the level of the first row's feet. If you sit in the first row your eye level would be at the performer's waist. There are entrances for performers from behind the stage and then two wings that disappear into the audience but not the traditional side entrances. My favorite seats are LC or RC row B-D any numbers.

Finally there is the smallest, most contemporary Rice Theatre. I have only been in this one once so I cannot accurately describe the overall feel and set up. When I was in it the seats had more of a bleacher feel to it. So you walked in on the stage level and then up into bleachers. The stage felt like a "black hole" and actors almost appeared out of nowhere. As I am not experienced with this venue I cannot recommend seats.

I think the ticket pricing (around $60 for an adult ticket) is really fair for the value (considering a ticket for a Broadway Across Canada performance is over $100). I really enjoy that all of the productions are professionally done and support the arts in Edmonton.

So far this year I have seen 'Hunchback' in the Shoctor and 'The Three Musketeers' in the Maclab both were phenomenal and I can't wait to see 'Little Women: The Broadway Musical' which is the season closer. They have already announced the program for next season and there are at least 4 productions that I will be attending!

I can't say I've ever had a less-than-stellar night out at the Citadel. They host a great range of performances, from The Wizard of Oz (great, but Toto kept running offstage!), to Studies in Motion (a very well-done, but extraordinarily nude production) to last night's Hunchback.

I love getting dressed up and coming here for a date or with a couple of friends. The quality of theatre is always high, even though the prices are, too.

Treats and drinks are available before the show and during intermission, including ice cream! Delicious.

I've recently been to the Citadel for two separate, non-theatre related events. The first was the launch of the Edmonton Champions Project at the Tucker Amphitheatre, which was a terrific event which included great music, a great presentation and a well organized reception with drinks and food.

The second was the 2010 ACE Awards held at the end of April. It's hard to judge the Citadel based on this event, since it was organized by the Ad Club, but I'm definitely impressed by the Citadel as a well-organized and well-run facility.

I also think despite its orange exterior, it's quite an impressive building.

I've never waited in line very long at the Citadel box office. Staff here know their jobs, and they're always tremendously helpful. The last production I saw here was the Wizard of Oz, which was excellent -- extremely well done, from set design, right on down to acting.

A lot of people shit on mainstream theatre -- they prefer to patronize the art-house, and independent ones. That's fine, but to do so at the exclusion of Edmonton's "big theatre" is to be shortsighted at best. At worst, you're robbing yourself of a great experience, which the Citadel has in spades.

Even if you're not a live theatre regular, the Citadel is still a great place to go just to do something different. I rarely see any plays here, because I am more of a Fringe person, but when I do, it's a good experience. Last time I went, I saw this play called Noises Off! It wasn't bad.

The theatre is big and nice, but it is old. The seats are comfortable, and there's enough room, so you can stretch your legs out. The intermission is a treat to look forward to, since they sell frozen desserts like ice cream on a stick... mmm. And although you can bring your ice cream in the theatre to eat, you cannot bring your garbage in there. I guess they don't want crinkly noises going on during the play. You can also get alcoholic drinks, pop, and water.

The tickets are usually quite expensive, but you can get discounted tickets. You have to check the website or call.

Okay, so I've never actually been inside the actual THEATRE part of the Citadel, but as a teenager I used to hang around in the Atrium sometimes after school when I didn't feel like going home, and still do on occasion. It's lovely, humid and tropical, with benches interspersed throughout its paths and a little stream/pond system flowing around, coming off a waterfall wall. In the wintertime, when it gets dark early and is freezing outside, it's especially lovely to indulge in a bit of escapism and sit for a while.
For the adventurous, there's also an upper level with benches and a large pond area, the waterfall's source.
Also of note: the resident wildlife. It was a long, long time ago, but the Citadel Theatre is where I saw my first-ever cockroach.

While working as an entertainment writer for the Edmonton Examiner I had the pleasure of receiving regular press passes for performances at the Citadel Theatre. Iâve always loved it there. The space is lovely, with vaulted ceilings and modern urban architecture. Thereâs also a indoor tropical garden thatâs a lush and humid respite from the cold winter weather outside. Itâs nice to just pop in and take a stroll sometimes. As for the shows here, Iâve been to Scrooge, Amadeus, Grease, A Christmas Carol (twice) and a ton of other smaller concerts and plays. The talent and quality vary. The big shows are always exceptional. During one of the smaller ones, I left partway through because it was insufferably boring (some post-modern German one-person extend-a-monologue). I like going for advanced screenings of the big shows or opening night, because they always have a great spread of food afterwards, wine and sometimes champagne. One of these years Iâd like to get a seasonâs pass. Itâs a great way to have an evening out every once in a while, and something fun to look forward to.
