A little Gem in London's downtown - go for a drink & stay for dinner. The owners are there and very friendly. Try the burger, but there is lots of choice on the menue.

What a difference a year makes. Although, it's more 3.5 stars. Service is still a bit dismal and it's quite possible we had the same server. But she did automatically add extra crusty bread to the mushroom/parm dip, which is what really added the stars here. Oh my, soooo good. I ordered the chicken pot pie and liked the big pieces of chicken but the rest was lacking something. Curry fries were shared and everyone was impressed with the fresh spicy tang of the curry. My dining companions all said they would return, so kudos to the Key. I would go back for that delicious dip. Perhaps requesting a vat size portion.

We rank this establishment highly for what it is, a bistro-pub. It is not competing with fine dining restaurants, so it shouldn't be denigrated for not being one.
Why give it 5 stars?
--friendly, quick service;
--comfy, some tables with high-stool seating (careful);
--wonderful pub grub, particularly the fish (cod) & chips;
--reasonable prices;
--location, downtown London, Rchmond Street, across from the Grand Theatre. -

Great location right beside the Grand Theatre. I had the beef stew which apparently is one of the best things on the menu. It was very flavourful with good texture to the beef & it came with a tasty dumpling on top. Not what I was expecting, but top marks for flavour! Good beer selection.

Cheers it's not, likely they won't remember your name or yell when you come through the door but they will give you the stink eye if you ask for a seat by the window. A friend and I ate here for lunch with her mother and I can say what first put me off was the dimness of the place even in the afternoon it was so dark in there. When her mother asked for a seat by a window the waitress abruptly said it was reserved (someone did come in just as we were finishing up but that was a good hour later and there was a bigger table behind that which remained empty). The wooden chairs and old keys on the wall (guess that's the church key part) made it feel like an English style pub to me...so I guess that's why I chose Fish & Chips. That was okay, but I stress OK not the best as the fish was very well done the tarter sauce as bland and the chips well at least mine undercooked. My biggest problem though had to do with two things. The mis-matched menu items: Pub food trying to be gourmet so they can tack on a couple extra dollars and justify it is how it read to me but for the decor and atmosphere seemed wrong, they'd be better off with general pub fare and likely a lot busier too. The second being the service while I am sure the lady was a very nice woman, her tableside manner was ridonk-u-lous. She didn't describe the special merely spat out what it was adding "the goat cheese is what makes it a twist on the classic" ummm...no, goat cheese has been done before in a melt that's not a twist. She didn't offer up suggested substitutes when prompted (though I pointed out to my friend in front of her that there were bbq sauce and other sauces on some of the items she could have subbed for), nor did she offer a list of sides only assuming that my friend's mother would know what they serve though it's not listed. Also no basic drink menu, no list to go from. All and all it was very off-putting to me. From the curry dip (which was like carrot slaw in a bland curry) to the tiny bathrooms and poor service this is not likely a place I'd reccommend or go to again.
