So the first thing I have to say is shhh, don't tell my hairdresser.

I desperately needed my hair cut, I was starting to look like someone had dragged an old pigs hair paint brush through a can of orange paint. I told myself if they had an appointment from a walk in I'd get my hair done right then and there.  Well I did.

I love my hair cut, it looks very good, cut to my hair type, head all that.

I love my colour. Tobi did a really good job of matching my current colour with my roots given that she isn't my normal stylist and so far so good.

Then when I checked in on Yelp I found out there was a discount. So I was double excited about it.

I would go back to Tobi, the only problem I had with the whole thing is that she died my scalp pretty obviously. It washed out, clearly as it does, but that was the only piece that I wasn't too thrilled with.

Anyway, say hi to Tobi, she's entertaining and a great stylist.

I was lucky enough to win a $50 voucher to Chop Shop on a night out at Lickerish a few months ago. I have had awful experiences with Hairdressers in Vancouver so have been reluctant to go and my hair and been growing and growing and growing. Time for a cut!

I booked in to Chop Shop. They got me in right away. On arrival, I was seen right away. My stylist, Filippo seemed to understand what I wanted although a few strange comments regarding me dyeing my hair and asking if it was to cover greys set a strange stone for me (as I am only 22 and didn't think I was grey...at all...and I dye my hair for the change of colour...like most people).

The head massage was amazing but only lasted maybe...5seconds...I wanted moreee!!! A good head massage is what  will get you a big tip in my experience!

I loved watching him cut. He seemed like he was really into and loving being a hair artist. The cut, blow-dry and style went great! Although I notice a few strange random long bits now I have washed and dried it myself but perhaps that is the new, modern style of layering...I am not sure...I am not a hair dresser.

I loved the cool, biker, rocker style decore and the fun music that was right up my track!

Generally friendly staff. All in all, I like it.

I went here once, about a year ago, and heard good things about this place, including that short haircuts were only $30. I'm a pin-up girl at heart, and got suckered in, because I love a proper deal! Uh-oh!

Nikki was my stylist, and I asked her to change the shape of my chin-length hair into one of those angled bobs. Not as drastic as Posh Spice, eugh, but I wanted to see the silhouette of the back of my head, with a sharp angle in the front because I have a heart-shaped face.

She said it was no problem, and would even teach me how to style/take care of it at home because I said I wanted it to be low-maintenance (I'm a wash-and-go person). Perfect.

What I ended up with was nothing angular at all, it was almost a straight-across, chin-length bob, which was terrible, because I have very thick hair. I looked like the year was either 1960 or 1994, she didn't teach me how to style/take care of the cut, and basically shooed me out of there because she had another appointment following me.

Not only that, but she charged me $60, saying that $30 was for styling. All she did was finger-blow-dry my hair for three minutes. Everywhere else I've ever been has had styling service included in the price of a cut, but if you specifically just want your hair styled, the charge is for that. Does she regularly send customers out of there with damp hair stuck to the backs of their heads? I was so disappointed and felt severely ripped off. Wowza.

If it's a sunny day and you see a grumpy person walking down Granville street, looking like a wet dog, ask them if they visited Nikki at The Chop Shop.

I hear that Doug at TCS is a total sweetie who rocks with scissors, but I have a regular stylist now, who fixed this mess, and knows what to do with my hair.

I normally wouldn't bother to write such a poor review for anything, but my experience at the Chop Shop was so outrageously awful that I feel I should do my best to save anyone else who, like me, thought the hip, casual, trendy outward aesthetic of the place might be even remotely close to reflecting how you'll be treated. First, I should say, my hair disaster at the Chop Shop took place 3 years ago. Things change, right? So why am I writing a review now? Because the stylist who destroyed my head was the OWNER of this disastrous salon.

I made an appointment well in advance for a cut and colour. I informed them that I had to catch a train to Seattle that day at 6pm, meaning I was to be out of the store by 5:15pm at the latest, and if there wasn't enough time, I'd do either the cut or the colour and come back another time. I arrived and was greeted by a friendly, cocky, and very distracted man, who told me as he looked at my hair that he could do what I wanted "no problem", but that because I was going from dark brown to a bright auburn, there would be some damage from the bleach. No problem, I've had slight bleach damage before. We start.

He spends the entire time he's bleaching my hair talking to his coworkers and random friends that keep popping in and out of the store, only stopping to let me know that he might end up with his own reality TV show like Miami Ink, and isn't he just the coolest. A good 35 minutes pass with bleach in my hair before he returns to wash it out. I'm blind without my glasses, so I really have no idea what he's doing back there. He runs the red through twice, because the colour isn't staying. By the time he'd combing it out after the second round of red, it's just past 5pm. He grabs 2 other staff members to dry it so that he can save time and cut while they dry my hair, but by this point I've put my glasses back on and been confronted with the pink straw that's sitting on my head.

I stop him and say that it's not the colour I'd hoped for, and he angrily grabs the photos I'd brought in, holds them against my head, and says, "This is as close as it gets, your hair was already ruined from your old dye jobs!" I tear up, apologize for crying, and say that I have to leave to catch my train, could I just pay for the bleach because the red didn't work, and he snaps at me for being "immature" and storms away to the front desk, leaving me standing there. I go to the front desk and ask again if I can pay for the bleach but not the red, and he yells, "I'm a professional! This is my business and I've never had a paying customer leave unsatisfied!" I ask what I should do, and he says, "Just leave."

I was in shock, I was crying (I've never cried over silly things like hair I dislike), and my hair was RUINED. It felt like straw, it was bright pinky-orange, and when I put it in a ponytail, bits started falling out. I managed to catch my train by pure luck, spent the weekend in hiding, and amazingly found a hairdresser in the town I was staying in to get my hair a deep red... nowhere near what I'd originally wanted, but she saved me from complete hair destruction. I had to cut off about 6 inches of hair soon after, and was using deep conditioners at least once a week for 9 months before I got sick of it and cut my hair off into a pixie cut.

I'm sorry this is long, but I just want people to see this. Even if you've had a great cut there, this is the person you are giving your money to.

First anyone who complains about a stylist should only complain
after a couple tries.  AND i am fussy!  It took me 12 plus years and I
NOW regularly go to Lucy... Ask for her.. chat her up for advise, become her client.
I have recommended her to many friends and those including my partner
have enjoyed her excellent ability to style.
    Thanks Lucy!
Chop Shop.... You are too pricy...However I expect prices to drop when HST goes away... :)

Of course I was attracted to the rock and roll theme of Chop Shop, to have that environment, with the wonderful personalities and personal service adds to the value. Of course rock and roll and nice people does not ensure a great haircut, but the amazing service I received from Britt topped off the whole package. I see a couple mentions of price on here, but if it is a couple more dollars than other salons I didn't notice, as overall the value was there.
Chop Shop Hair is my salon of choice, and I recommend it to all my friends and family.

Like any salon, it really is the stylist, not the space, that makes the difference.

If you're looking for a cool space with good music with easy access to a half-decent ghetto slice, this is good.

The Chop Shop was my salon away from home for years under the easy and comfortable care of one very talented colourist (who shall remain nameless) who has left the salon since it's "Miami Ink Wannabe" stage.

The combined expansion of The Chop Shop to a Langley and Commercial Drive location as well as the launch of the very unrealistic reality TV series seriously reduced its street cred- and lost them more than one of their talented staff members.

If you used to be a big fan of what the Shop did for you in the past, a little birdie told me that you can find a few of them at East Vanity Parlour, Bangtown Saloon, or Mishetti Head Art.

But if you feel like living dangerously (like I sometimes do), I'd head back to the original location.  Word on the street is that there are some new kids hoping to prove they've got the chops to stick around. And yes, the pun was fully intended.

    Yours faithfully: MJO.

I love this place. I have a great time every time I visit. The new shop is huge and really well done- the decor suits the personality of the awesome employees.

When I come in I make an appointment with Doug. He knows exactly what he's doing because he's been doing it for a while now. Don't quote me on this but Im pretty sure he's one of the youngest (if not the youngest) barber in vancouver. On any given day you can get your hair done by a great stylist and leave there feeling better about yourself. Doug usually brings in Shilo, his boston terrier.

It's great to hear the stylists banter with each other when you're getting your hair done. It kinda makes me feel like I'm part of a club or that I'm some how 'in the know' for going there.

Zach was awesome. I generally put off getting haircuts because I HATE the invariable smalltalk that goes with it. But Zach was funny, witty, and charming and REAL, as opposed to the usual bubblegum types who go into hair cutting.

And the haircut was great, too.

Super pleased, will let him cut my hair anytime!

I went here on Monday for a haircut. My hair was getting kind of poofy and out of control. I booked an appointment for the evening with Lucy.

I arrived and had to wait a bit because she was finishing up with a client. Once she was done, she came right over and got me ready.

All I wanted was for my hair to be shaped a bit, and have some subtle layers in the back. She seemed to know exactly what I wanted and got right to work. She likes to cut dry hair, so if you're not used to that, don't be alarmed. I prefer to have my hair cut dry and straightened because then it isn't a surprise once it's styled. All my best haircuts have been done this way. Anyway, she flat ironed my hair and then began to cut. She made pleasant conversation and my experience was good. She used a really nice hair oil on me that I wanted to buy, but found was $35. That was pretty much the only downside to my visit.

The price is kind of steep, as are ALL salons I have ever been to. I don't know, I always keep my length and just go in for shapes and trims so I feel a little robbed when I pay so much, but this how I feel every time, no matter where I go.

At the end of the day, I love my haircut and will go back again and again.

I have had a few good cuts here but will not be returning. I made a walk-in appointment and came back after 30 minutes to be greeted half-assed by the stylist.

Did the standard wash, but she spilt water all over by back and soaked my shirt. Ok, could have put a towel on the back of the chair to fix that. Strike 1.

She was actually helpful in getting my style choices figured out, thankfully I had a snapshot of myself on my phone that I showed her. She seemed confident. I proceeded, but with guarded caution.

The theme is conflicting. The stylists should have high-energy and be excited about working in such a unique place. She seemed like she was just there "for the experience rather than providing the experience". Fair enough, I get that you are still waiting to graduate. But don't make it seem like you are out of there as soon as you have your credentials.

We came close to the end of my haircut and she pulled out the buzzers. She was shaking while trimming up around my ears and nicked me once. I barely felt it, and she didn't say anything. Let's keep going, just get me on my way. Other side. Nicks me again, this time I feel it. Strike 2.

We finish up and go back to the sink to wash out, but my ear is stinging now. She says she must have knocked a "zit" on my ear. I'm not that greasy, and I don't know anyone with zits on their freaking ears. That was Strike 3.

No apology, hmm, I can deal with that, but Strike 4 just because. Give me your business card after I pay the receptionist? Thanks, I'll pass that along to someone if they need some beef shoulder and some spare ribs. This place was more like a butcher shop than a hair shop.

I went to meet my girlfriend later on, and she noticed blood running down the side of my neck. Not cool. I then realized that the stylist probably hadn't even disinfected that razor before.

If you are into being mutilated and want a truly "grunge" experience, then the Chop Shop will become a favourite of yours. However, I would recommend avoid this place at all costs, and I will not return for any price.

Oh my goodness!! OK so I got my hair done here like 6 months ago before they changed locations (Downtown Vancouver) by a stylist named T**y, I'm not sure if she is still working there or not. But because of her I will NEVER return to this place.
I made an  appointment for noon, n when I arrived she double booked me and another girl. So I ended up sitting and waiting forever, which already got me started on the wrong foot with this place. She started doing my hair and another girls hair at the same time. At the time I was dying my hair black, my hair isn't very long (shoulder length) n half of my head was shaved at the time. She left the product in for so long, that my hair is still damaged!!! I only brought $120 with me, thinking, I have short hair, I'm dying it black and HALF MY HEAD IS SHAVED!!! 3 and a half hours later, I went to pay n she tried charging me $150 plus dollars, I told her I only  brought $120 n she simply said "Oh that's fine." And took it.  What a weird thing to say if the price is a $150 dollars, you would think that was a set price, right? So she should have asked me to go home n grab more money or ask if I had a credit card or a bank card..... It's just blatantly obvious that she ripped me off big time.

TALK ABOUT OVERCHARGING! She obviously ripped me off, CHOP SHOP YOU NEED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO YOUR STAFF!!
P.S. Fire T**Y, she's a thief, a horrible hair stylist, and not someone you should have representing your company, she's rude and has the worst trucker mouth I have ever heard.

Am I here to get my hair cut, buy a fireballs record or get some custom rims fitted to my caddy. Luckily it was to get my haircut because I hate the fireballs and I ride the bus.

Home to a reality show and with a young hip staff you might expect the worse from this place. However the staff are friendly and laid back, the price is not too bad at all and the cuts I have had from there have been great.

My stepdaughter (who was eleven at the time) and I were watching television one day when this reality show about the Chop Shop came on. Excited, she asked if the next time she gets a haircut, if we can go there!

We made an appointment by telephone a week in advance. We showed up for our appointments only to have to wait for our stylist, T**y to set-up her station, mix up colour for another stylist and had me fill out a form with our information. I was done filling out the form but T**y was doing something on the front desk computer so i picked up a magazine and started to flip while we waited. I guess she was waiting for ME to walk up to the desk and let her know that we were ready. Grr..she couldn't glance over at us and see that we were ready minutes ago? I guess the computer is more important? Jeez! I have to admit that T**y was NOT very friendly and had poor chair side manner. The impression that I got from her was that she had better things to do than do our hair. It seemed that anytime when I asked her a question, she would answer me back as if I was dumb and it made me feel bad for asking. I think my stepdaughter was intimidated by T**y's attitude too. She is always a happy kid and always enjoyed getting her haircut and conversing with the stylists but that day, she looked so unhappy in the chair.

The salon was a funky looking place that just relocated into a larger space. Music was kinda loud and we heard the other staff talk to each other across the salon about how drunk they got the night before etc. LOL, they are only human, right? Save that conversation for the lunchroom please!

My stepdaughter went first for her haircut. Her hair was still kinda damp from the shower earlier that morning. T**y asked if she washed her hair and when she said she did so, she did a thumbs up and just spritzed her hair down with a spray bottle. She was happy because she didn't have to shampoo, condition etc at the shampoo sink! Laziness, I wonder? My stepdaughter was growing out a bad haircut from a few months back so T**y really only re-cut the back of her hair and barely even touched the front and the sides as she wants to grow out the layers. Then it was my turn. I was only having my bangs cut and the rest of my hair flat ironed. She did an ok job on both of us but the "not so friendly" attitude really dampened the whole experience. My stepdaughter was so excited to get her haircut at the Chop Shop and it was such a let down and disappointing experience!

Then when we were paying, our bill came to $95.00. $95.00 for an eleven yr old's haircut, a bang trim and flat iron service? Ouch! My step daughter's haircut was $60.00 alone! She is big for her age and may look older than eleven, but it is quite clear that she is still a kid. They are charging high end salon prices and the shop does NOT reflect high end. It was more like half a haircut because the stylist really only cut the back of her hair and barely even touched the front and sides. And no proper shampoo service either! I feel VERY ripped off! Oh well, they got my money now so I don't think they care if we return or not!

When I called a few days later to speak to their salon director about our Chop Shop visit, she was actually very nice and concerned and even thanked me for calling. They offered$15.00 off our next visit.  Woo-hoo!! $15.00 bucks! I guess that is their policy and she has to go by it. Thats too bad.

To be honest, we'd rather go to the dentist than sit in that stylist's chair again!

I was walking by, needed a haircut and they were able to take me.  My friend and I had fun, drinking from our traveller and chatting it up with the stylist.  She was sweet but seemed young and not very experienced.  She decided to try something different with my to-go style but it ended up being a total mess, like i just got stuck in a pigeon coop and escaped.  I knew she could tell it was a disaster too.  Though admittedly it coulda worked if I were in Texas - it was big, like scary big.  She must have used half a bottle of hairspray too.  Poor thing.  I went out immediately and bought a hat and pulled that off for the rest of my night out.

I had my haircut years ago and have told everyone since that it was bad and judging from the reviews, I see nothing has changed at all. The stylist was rude, did a really bad haircut, was in a rush, blamed me for making the last minute appointment even though it was a walk in that was okay'd by the receptionist. I asked the receptionist if they accepted MC which she said they did and then when it came time to pay they said that they didn't and had to borrow money from the BF. Nice looking edgy store, however, service all around was just pathetic. I haven't been since and was able to convince others not to either. This was 2 years ago and things haven't changed at all.

There's a reason me and my bff have been coming here for two years straight. No stuck up attitudes, just laid back rock vibe and awesome styles. The girl we go to is amazing, super sweet, and really talented. And did I mention the free bang trims between cuts? Oh yeah. So freaking great. I'm taking my mom there this week, cause they actually listen to what you want at chop shop! I've never had a problem with a stylist being too stuck up here- they're always full of suggestions on how to make our ideas into better haircuts.

Can we say tattoos, anyone?  I feel like I need to get inked to get my haircut here. No, I'm kidding.  This hair place is actually really cool, funky and scarier than it looks. Most of the hairdressers have tattoos and I could say they have no problems expressing themselves.  But, I've heard that one of the girls is amazing for cutting bangs here and the colourists are also really good. Then entire salon is a rock and roll homage to everything that is bike,s babes and living in the fast lane. It's almost like a barber shop meets ghetto glam feel. Everyone is nice and they'll do a great job.  Don't be shy and get in touch with your wild side before you make an appointment.
