Review from Tanya B.
I have only been for LUNCH but I've been about 15 times in 3 months. It's that good. I started out having the Cajun Chicken Ciabatta Sandwich. Really, really good until I had bad slaw on it one day and now I can never have it again. Needless to say, I still recommend it, coulda been an off day. Now I do the "Build your own Lunch". Such a good selection! You can choose 2 or 3 items from a large assortment of goodies. Pizza and 1/2 sandwich $14
Highlights:
Turducken paninni
Fry Bar (so many fries to choose from including yummy poutine)
Cajun Chicken Ciabatta
Any pizza
The bread used for the paninni and pizza is so freaking good!
Down side: They do not accept debit and if you order something without the side dish (ie fries) the price is still the same. $14 for a sandwich is kinda steep. I like it when a restaurant reduces the price when you opt out of something.
Food VERY good.
Service and decor good.
Huge TV screen playing sports non-stop, good if you like that sorta thing I guess. Apparently it's a sports bar so, there you go.
Enjoy. -

We came here to meet up with some friends for a few drinks after the hockey game tonight. We got in at about 10pm. The bouncer was super nice, as was the girl at the front. There was a $10 cover pp after 10pm, but she let us in for free which was awesome.
I had the apple aloe cocktail, which was delish! So now you are wondering why would I give a 2/5 if everything was good? Well, because the server we had was the most rude server I have ever had. She treated us as if we were going to dine and dash and repeatedly told (not ask, TOLD) us to settle tab, even though we were still there and intended on staying. So to get her off our back, we decided to leave and asked for our bill. She comes back with the bill. With over 10 ppl in our party, it takes a while for everyone to pay up (some pay cash, some credit ect.). So she come back and asks where her bill is and we tell her we are still figuring it out and a some of us were at the table next to us, as there was more room. She rolls her eyes and very annoyed she turns towards my friends demanding the money.
Needless to say, the server completely ruined a night that could have been awesome.
I would never return because of her. -

Went for lunch: friendly service, $5 beers, comfy seats with good tv viewing.
The food = poor. I was really disappointed in my burger, very bland, it came with a salad that was bitter tasting and over dressed. My friend had the cajun chicken burger, also very bland and it had cucumber in it? We ordered a side of yam fries and chipotle aoili dip that was very yummy. We got the bill and gagged at the price we had to pay for blah blah food.
I'd go back for drinks with friends and a side of yam fries - that's it... -

Snooze. Pressed for time before an event at SFU Woodward's, we ventured in to what turned out to be a blasé, dull, cookie-cutter experience. Service was frosty and distant. The menu is pretty run-of-the-mill, cut from the Cactus Club/The Keg/Milestone's ilk. Our fries arrived cold and soggy. My salad was a dressing conveyance, not anything vaguely resembling the healthy dinner option I was hoping for. Behind all this mediocre food is an unsympathetic waitstaff and a charmless setting.

You know what I like best about The Charles Bar? Its staff. They're cute, friendly, and interesting, and I've never noticed uptight management here. The staff do their jobs and do them well without an overlord making sure they avoid chatting and laughing while doing so.
I've never tried the food here, and though there aren't many options for me, I know that some day I will snack a bit here. Decent beer prices considering the fancy decor, and a great place to watch a game. -

I'm upping the anti on The Charles. Are you ready for it....The Charles has the best burger in Vancouver. I still think the rest of the place is meh, though the fact that some of the booths have their own tv screen is brilliant. Service was good at the bar, but the location results in a clientele that is clownish.
But the burger elevates this place. Was a great place to watch the Canucks. I accept the clientele and return mouth a'watering.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Was here a few weeks back... The guy tried charging me cover, I resisted as I was just there to meet a few friends for some beer and they let me in anyhow... 10 minutes later, they drew back the big black curtains (used for cover) and stopped charging cover. So If I wouldn't have resisted, I would have had to pay some obscene cover charge just to have a beer with some friends? On a positive note.. the room is cool and the TV behind the bar is quite impressive. I would say there is no definite theme to the room as there are a lot of different things going on at once with regards to decor. Beer was good. Service was good. I'll be back.

Review from Sheryl D.
The rating is more for ambience and the gorgeous, huge TV screens everywhere. Makes it a super awesome place to watch games. Typical gas town crowd but with more student/teacher types, an SFU campus just behind them.
Food was pretty decent. We came on a game night and got pulled pork nachos, which were served on this long rectangular plate. I didn't care much for the fancy decoration; it was actually a bit tedious trying to keep the nachos on that plate but everything tasted fine.
We were both sorely disappointed with the chocolate martini and Manhattan cocktail we ordered. Worst drinks we've had for the price and they call themselves the Charles "bar". Stick to the beer and wine you'll be fine then head to the Pourhouse for serious cocktails. -

This place ain't half bad.
Every time I've gone I've had great service, super friendly and attentive, good food, and great caesars.
The nachos, however blew me away on the most recent trip. Topped with pineapple, squash, baby tomatoes and cheese they were perfectly cooked and really flavourful. It was a huge plate that came with guac, sour creme and salsa and made for a perfect patio lunch.
Of the things that keep me coming back, the patio has to be one of them. Nestled right at the foot of the Woodwards residential tower it's a bit warm in the summer as there isn't much breeze but it is glorious nevertheless. You can people watch the lovelies coming out of the Cambie or stare longingly at the Contemporary Arts School at SFU.
All in all I'm a fan. Prices are decent, on par with other bars of it's kind, the foods good and the drinks are fab. -

Bit of a surprise - this place looks hoity-toity from the outside, with the name and the decor. However, not sure how I'm missed the huge TVs - this place is more sports bar than anything else and they have mini TVs in the booths as well. More expensive than neighbouring dives like Metropole and Cambie - but if you don't feel like standing in line or yelling over music, they have pretty decent $3.50 and $4 beer specials from Sunday to Wednesday. But if avoid on 'game night' if you're not a fan.
Bar wraps around and there are some pretty good seats. Last call on Tuesday night was 12:45AM. Meh - maybe I should be ashamed that I know this? (shrug)
I have it on good authority that the patio is pretty spectacular during the summer time. I avoid sports bars like the plague.. I'm easily distracted by TVs... but this one is half-decent.
Your mileage may vary - but I was treated to a show that a drunk couple put on across the street in the parking complex... I'm not a voyeur - I just thought it was more interesting than Canucks highlights. Like the Stanley Cup chants and celebrations - this performance was premature.Listed in: A Compendium of Fine…

Where do I start, I walk in, no service people to be found. No signs to seat yourself! Awkward.. And weird. After waiting for a while, we grab a empty table. I order my drink, didn't come. The one and only server in the place comes back and asked me again, " do you want a drink?" I responded that I already ordered one and never got it.
Washrooms are unisex. I walk in and breathe good ol' outhouse urine smell. Where are the flies? The floor is pooled with urine, I had to use my heel to knock down the toilet seat which then caused major splatter on my leg.
That is pretty much my last straw. Service bad, washroom horrible, food was ok but expect to wait a few hours for dinner. The set up is triangular and awkward especially when they set up a mini dance floor that is by the entrance. The crowd was decent but sound system was also bad -

The boy and I recently stopped in here on an impulse on our way to The Diamond. It was a Tuesday evening so the place was pretty much empty, which was nice because it meant fast service and the ability to sit wherever we wanted. We chose to sit in one of the booths that had it's own flat screen television in addition to all the other larger ones plastered around the bar. The atmosphere and decor is very black and modern which I think would be much more enjoyable if visiting this place at night when there were more people.
We browsed over the food menu but nothing really stood out at us so we just settled on drinks. B got a beer and I got the Gastown Lemonade. Everything was great but we just stayed for the two drinks. I would like to come back here again on a busier night. -

Didn't try a ton of food but the buttermilk onion rings were so good they couldn't be good for you. For $7? I can definitely handle that.
Presentation of all the food was 5-star.
I'd definitely return to try out more stuff. -

In particular, they have a pizza with Caramelized Onion, Okanagan Goat Cheese, Portobello Mushroom, Golden Beets and Balsamic Glaze.

I came here during the Social Media Unplugged conference and I will say empathize that they didn't expect the huge influx of traffic. The wait times were long but that can be expected when a conference is held within steps of a gastropub. No probs.
The interior is modern and very black. I'm a fan of warm colours myself, so the interior didn't inspire me though I find the private booths neat. We covered up the tv inside ours with menus because it was just distracting (no accessible power switch). I'm just not a TV girl, that's all. The layout of the space is open and easy to mingle in. I do like that.
I ordered some mac n' cheese balls as a quick snack and they tasted really... fishy. It was strange. And unappealing.
I can't say I'd ever be drawn back to come here but I certainly wouldn't be strongly against it. It's just ok. -
Review from Christine R.

It's called the Charles Bar after Charles Woodward, the founder of the Woodward's department store that used to occupy this spot and still has a spot in every true-blue Vancouverite's heart, especially those who remember Woodward's Food Floors and the "$1.49 Day, Tuesday" jingle.
To me, the name Charles also denotes a certain 19th-century gentility, so while I was not disappointed with the classy atmosphere of this cozy little lounge (a sharp contrast to that enduring dive, the Cambie, a door down), to socialize, you had yell over the blast of the hockey game coming from not only several big screens, but also tiny ones built into the little tables. Someone out there likes TV - and is also unfamiliar with the concept of volume control, especially when it comes to modulating the sound of commercials.
Do I sound bitter? Well, it's only because I'm a hockey widow (Canucks widow, mostly) and on that particular night, I'd escaped the glare of the game at home to hang out with a couple of similarly non-hockey-fan friends. But this is Vancouver and there is no escape; when the Canucks play, every bar is a sports bar.
When I wasn't going deaf every time the crowd groaned "UHHHHH!!!!!" at the game, I enjoyed my Gamay Noir from the nicely organized list of by-the-glass wines. It was a nice surprise to find out that first drink was gratis, due to being in the party of a very well-known blogger. I would have gladly paid for a second glass of wine, but of course our server was nowhere to be found from the time I took the last sip to the time we had to say goodnight.
Come now Charles Bar, don't rest on those pretty looks, try a little harder to inhabit the spirit of customer service in your namesake. -
Review from Sarah D.
A nice, perpetually-hoppin' bar in the newly renovated Woodwards building, the Charles Bar is a good place to come and watch the game. I was here with some excellent company the other night to watch the game, and I was excited when I noticed that the waitresses were handing out Vancouver 2011 Playoffs towels to all the patrons. What a great idea!
As far as the food goes, I had a very nice burger with poutine on the side. (Healthy choice, right?) I can be a bit of a poutine snob, but I actually really liked their gravy. It was a bit different than your normal poutine gravy. I'm not 100% sure, but I want to say it tasted slightly of rosemary.
So why did I knock off two stars? Well, I must admit that I have a little trouble paying $20 for a pitcher of beer. Sure, this place has a lot going for it, but it's a bit tough to shell out that kind of dough when there are places serving $13 pitchers in the vicinity. Still, "A-OK" is a good summary of how I feel about this place. -

I attend school close by so I was curious when the Woodward's complex opened!
I love the look of the restaurant. I find it refreshing (the tables look great!) and modern.
The food hasn't disappointed...
The poutine-packed with flavour and not one fry is left uncoated.
The beef shortrib flatbread-flavourful and just enough for a nice lunch.
The pulled pork is tender and flavourful.
The only negative I have (which I don't believe I can really blame them for) is on a busy game night, my bf and I requested a table and they said there were none, but we took a quick look around and found a small booth in the corner.
I think it's a place to try-but don't go on game nights if you're looking for a relaxed lunch/dinner-it gets pretty crazy! -

The Charles Bar is a great place to go and hang out .. the servers are great .. the food is better .. The Beer is decently priced for a Vancouver bar .
If you get a chance to eat here I recommend the pulled pork nachos, lobster mac and cheese balls ... the onion rings .. really all the food is good and well priced -

Came by the Charles last Saturday waiting for a movie to start at Tinseltown. We had the falafel with a side of classic poutine ($2.00 upgrade from the fry bar) and a Rickards Red.
Service was good considering a hockey game was on with only 2 servers working. Friendly staff and the poutine side was fantastic. The falafel was fresh but little lacking on assembly. Overall the Charles is a nice location to have in my neighborhood and I will definitely be stopping in again for a bite and a beer. -

Ok...so despite the great location and the nice look and feel, this place is just awful. The drinks and food are overpriced. The service is sub par, and the menu is very limited.
Take for instance the $12 Nachos "Grandes"...which are barely Nachos, and definitely not Grandes.
All the food seems to come served on top of this newsprint imitation paper that just gets shredded as you eat and sticks to the food. Paper under your food is fine if you're eating out of baskets, but these are plates! I had to stop more than a few times to yank bits of paper out of my mouthful of food...yum...paper products...
The poutine was made with shredded cheese, so instant fail there.
Honestly, I feel really bad giving such a bad review, but it's the truth. If you want to go to a bar in the hood, head up to Pender and check out Jagger's. Way better food, service, prices, and atmosphere.
The only reason why it gets 2 stars instead of 1 is the nice industrial design. But sadly, you can't eat or drink wood beams and brick... -

I stopped by for a quick pint before the hockey game yesterday and was drawn in by a mix of curiosity and a thirst to imbibe on some $3 Whistler lager. For a sports fan this is an amazing place; the best TV screens ever including little personal flat screens for the booths at the back. I looked at the menu which was uncomplicated, mostly pub fare with some classics like giant onion rings but also a wide array of interesting looking flat breads. I was in a rush but I will come back with friends and an appetite.
Also: not sure if they do this all the time but they had a Twitter and in-bar contest for hockey tickets which any Canuck fan realizes is huge. Even pre-season tickets in the lower bowl go for $140 so that is a big draw and the bar is within walking distance to GM oh I mean Roger's Arena.
Negative: the girls seemed to be wearing black hot pants/mini skirts. But I'm not a guy so maybe that is a positive?
Can't rank it higher without eating there but I will be back. Maybe with some tights for the girls. Aren't they cold, I wondered? -
Review from Derek W.
I don't know if any bar has been more precisely three-star than this one.
The food is good, but not great. The drink list is good, but not great. The servers - you guessed it.
I don't know why I'd go here instead of any of the host of great bars just to the East in Gastown, except perhaps for location, or for the giant TVs. When Canuck-season gets in full swing, I can imagine Charles will be hoppin. Until then, it is just a handy spot for when I'm meeting friends who live in Woodward's. -
Review from Dave M.
I go here regularly for Canucks games and it's not bad the past few months.
McLean's is my favourite place to watch games, but it can be a bit quiet in the bar so The Charles is often the place I end up at. It's a weird place. It's a sports bar, they have TVs in some booths and then there's 15-20% of the seats you can't even get a good view of the game from.
The beer selection isn't bad - it's okay. The service is generally average-to-very-good. The food isn't bad on the whole, but I must say the onion rings are the best I've ever had.
Be wary - it's one of those greedy-bastard places where they goad you into using their bank machine rather than allowing you to pay debit. -

I've noticed that I've been hanging out in Gastown quite a bit recently. The entire area has been revitalized, and lively with action. Last night checked out the Charles Bar in the new Woodward's building.
There's really nothing too spectacular about the place but it is a hodge-podge of personalities in there - artists, barbie dolls, guys night out, older mature couples, and even a stagette. Reminds me a little of Library Square (but I don't think this place is Donnelly). Because of its location, The Charles Bar it will do well - probably become the local watering hole of the people in Woodwards.
Standard bar but I do have to give props to the bouncer. No attitude, made everybody feel welcome, and had a ton of patience with the unrulies walking down the street.
HOT TIP: If you do visit Charles Bar or the Woodwards building, check out the huge mural by the basketball courts in the atrium by London Drugs. It's called Abbott and Cordova (by Stan Douglas)- an image of the Gastown Riot that occured right down the street in 1971. Go and Google it...... this same image was displayed in a prominant New York gallery a few years ago.
This Gastown Riot was the single event that led to the gradual decline of Gastown in the 70 and 80's. Nice to see things have turned around. -

I wandered in here from a friend's condo upstairs in the Woodwards building just after it opened. I ended up spending a very relaxing Sunday grazing on appies and beers with a rotating cast of friends. It was the kind of day that defines what a watering hole should offer.
I like The Charles Bar a lot and am in there at least once a week even thought i live in Yaletown. Great staff, the food is just what I want when I am bellied up to wood (love the fry bar) and the room is space is very well laid out. Even the big windows are great for watching the world go by.
I'm a fan. See you there soon. -

I feel like I'm missing out on something here. I mean, I like how they have TVs EVERYWHERE for the game, but I mean, in the booth? Isn't that a bit.. I don't know.. much? Then there was the mandatory coat check. I'm here for a beer and I'm seated in a booth - is that really necessary?
I guess I wasn't sure what to expect, but I have a feeling like The Charles tries to be everything to everyone. They had a live DJ who spun some sick tunes, and there was an area cleared away for dancing as soon as the Canucks game came to an end. But really? I know they're open for lunch, and the fries + aoli was alright, but food + sports + drinks + DJ seems like alot for this place to try and pull off.
There was the awkward experience of our waitress trying to have us pay 5$ that our previous group of friends that had left supposedly stiffed her. And then there was the large group of people who awkwardly crept into our space until we decided, OK, we're going, you can have the space to yourself. I really don't know. I liked the hardwood tabletops and the selection by the DJ who spins their every Saturday (so he tells me), but I can't find much else to like about the place. It's like the richer man's Cambie. Sorry. -

It might be a sports bar. It might be a pub. It might just be a casual place to grab an interesting meal. Whatever you want it to be, it's pretty good.
There is no shortage of TVs, so it's a decent place to catch the game with cold beers and creative finger food. We're usually here at lunch time, so I go for one of the flatbread pizzas; the luau (upscale ham & pineapple), goat cheese or the prawn & pesto are particularly tasty. The lemon pepper wings are great. I have yet to try the Lobster Mac and Cheese balls, but they sound delicious.
Staff are genuinely friendly, and the service is always delivered at the right pace. The low couch-table seats are a little crowded with drinks, meals and leg room, but after a few who cares.
The Charles is great for those of us who just want a alternative to Steamworks after all these years. I just wish they had a deeper beer selection on tap.
Tip: If you don't want to watch TV in the booth, the power switch in on the left side. You're welcome. -

i live in the woodwards and have been to Charles only a couple of times but the food has always been great. the onion rings, fry bar and tuna were on our list and were decent. Yes it is pretty noisey but its a bar!!, good selection of beers (red stripe) is not found everywhere and enjoyed a couple of those. Allways a good crowd of people no trouble makers , great place to watch a game with daily drink specials

Another soulless corporate eating establishment trying to be too "cool" for it's own good. Overpriced food, boring uninspiring decor... Seriously why do half of these new places all look like cactus clubs? Staff are bad, just more of the same airheads. What is with the mandatory coat check, another cash grab. If you are a yuppie or an entry level hipster you will love this place, but if you have any sense of culture or taste, stay away!

i came here once to watch a canucks game.. i thought the food was really good.
seating is self-seating and they were super busy.. we asked one of the servers and she said she'd help us but didn't end up coming thru even with tables where people were about to leave.. new patrons just took them over although we thought we'd get it after the server cleaned the table
u have to be quick and just stake your claim.. no manners here! which is understandable and very fair in a bar/pub setting.. i thought they might run it more like a restaurant but its good to know for next time.
decor is nice inside and they have lots of TV screens as well as a couple of super large screens. they were playing the Canucks game in one half and NBA allstar skills competition in the other. they also have some seating (small couches) that come with their own small TV which i thought looked great!
we ended up sitting at the bar.. drinks were good.. the bartender took our orders and the food was delicious! good burger and they had a lot of good other food options.
at night it turns into a club.. they move all the tables out of the way for a dance floor.. have bouncers outside charging cover.. and a DJ. the music wasn't great so we didn't stay.
great venue to watch the game.. i'll be back to try more of the menu for sure! -

The Charles presents a mixed message, one where a sports bar meets a gastropub, with some mid-century-inspired decor thrown in. The food and service are good, but I would've preferred they picked their focus and ran with it. The location is great, a nice space, and nicely appointed. I end up here frequently as my office is nearby.
