The CAT is not your average animal It's a massive beast of a vessel that transports cars and walk-on passengers from Portland or Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. It's one part utility transportation ferry and one part tour boat.
Here's the lowdown on the big kitty:
- You'll have to allow yourself extra time to get on and off the ferry because you have to check-in and go through customs with a couple hundred other people.
- Bring a jacket, coat, or blanket because it can get really chilly on the boat, even if it's blistering hot outside.
- Bring plenty to entertain yourself with - books, games, portable DVD player, crosswords, Mad Libs, Dungeons & Dragons, etc.
- Bring headphones with music or earplugs! This will be the only way to retain your sanity when subjected to 5 hours of stir crazy children.
- If you have time, bring on your own food and snacks. There are drinks, snacks, and meals on the boat, but there was a limited selection and if you're picky at all, it's just not going to cut it. It will save you money too. Just remember to eat all your fruit and veg before going through customs when you arrive.
- If you're prone to nausea on a boat, bring your meds. The trip is pretty easygoing but can get choppy from time to time.
- I found it was cheaper to buy walk-on passenger tickets, park my car in Portland, and then rent a car when I got to NS. It's more convenient to drive on your own car though.
It's definitely an easy and fun way to get from the US to Atlantic Canada with not too much hassle.
