20 reviews for The Cannery Seafood Restaurant
All Reviews
It is truly tragic that this restaurant is closed. I have been looking forward to eating here ever since I did two years ago. I am coming back to Vancouver in a few weeks and just found it was closed.
Have the owners moved to another restaurant? Is there any chance of this place opening back up?
It feels weird writing a review for a place that is closing in a month, but I feel that it's necessary to share my experiences of the past. The Cannery is the type of place that you can show off to mom, have a classy night out with friends, or where you can just show up at the lounge in a small group to enjoy their excellent menu and service. The view and location is second to none, and the food is as consistently good and well-presented as any fine establishment. They serve my favourite mussels dish in town: Roasted with pine nuts, chorizo, capers, tomato and rosemary. The bread is perfect for soaking up the cast iron skillet drippings. An absolute bargain at $16. The salmon wellington is enough for sharing, and is accompanied by a pinot noir sauce that will leave you daydreaming whenever you think about it.
The freshest fish and an ample wine selection rounds out the dining experience.
Don't complain about the location. Consider it a treat to go this remote waterfront gem just minutes from downtown. And the parking is free.
BOOK YOUR RESOS NOW BECAUSE THEY ARE CLOSING!
They are going to close down and relocate in March 2010 so you better book your experience now. this place IS as good as it gets.
Kind of in an awkward place by the water- you have to buzz in. it definitely is a wonderful dining experience from beginning to end.
From the outside this place doesn't look like much. kind of an old boat/cabin in the middle of nowheresville.
But as soon as you step in it is a fine dining experience like no other.
The service is impeccable- I told them it was my mom's birthday and they placed a balloon on her chair! she was thrilled.
The food: Have you ever had seafood SO delicious that it just melts in your mouth? If not- GO HERE! if yes, I bet that other place doesn't beat this place. I think handsdown this is my favourite seafood place in Vancouver- and I have been to EVERY seafood resto in the city.
The portions are generous, the food is flavourful and filling wihtout being heavy.
The view is also spectacular. I cant imagine a better location to have ANY event, ANY occassion with ANY crowd.
So sad it is closing. I would have definitely liked to book the entire resto to have a nice event
Went here for my birthday and was sadly disappointed. The view was spectacular, the wine was excellent, but the food. Oh the horror.
I really wanted to like this place. But I could have made a homemade dinner better than this one. The calamari was extra rubbery, the scallops were mid-sized (deep diver is the only way to go) and just steamed (boring), and the small shrimp weren't even deveined. I could have gone to the grocery store, bought this for $3, threw it in a pan and served it to myself. Would have been a much cheaper way to go. I was expecting gourmet and got... well.. shrimp poop.
Extremely disappointed. Not worth eating, but maybe worth a drink at the lonely bar.
I feel it necessary to post something before this restaurant closes forever. I have been reading the previous reviews and for the most part these comments represent a lot of the comments. The food and wine are great but the service could either be excellent or bad. I admit I have had these service experiences too, but I will always come back for the food and to watch the tug boat ballet.
Bye Bye Cannery!!!
IT was a great restaurant, with great service, excellent view of the mountains and ocean, but unfortunately, it is closed for good.
Happy Birthday to my Bf, Happy Birthday to my Bf, Happy Birthday to my BF..... Happy Birthday to You!
One of a kind restaurant in the middle of a port... feeling like you're in a world that's never been discovered.. having to pass security before you can drive through the road to a cute little restaurant.
When I made reservations for this special occasion, I asked if there was anything special done for birthdays. They had told me that a complimentary dessert would be provided, along with a personalized menu and a balloon (I opted out of the balloon).
Boy did a lot of people celebrate as we arrived.. I think I saw about 10 balloons on the lower dining area. We got put in abooth upstairs where we can look out on the entire port and sunset with a view of the lion's gate bridge - beautiful :) The lobster oil that was paired with the vinegar was delectable. We ordered half a litre of See Ya Later Riesling (what a name) and it wasn't too sweet, just the way I liked it.
For dinner the lobster bisque, salmon wellington and trouth was ordered. The bisque was creamy with a hint of spice and there was several pieces of real lobster as well. The pastry of the wellington was flaky and full of buttery goodness, while the salmon was perfectly cooked. The trout came with a lemon butter sauce (you can choose that or pineapple salsa) and it was tender and moist.
Our waiter was extremely courteous and not overbearing and when he brought out the chocolate sin cake, it was to die for... mmmmm creamy mousse.
Overall it was a great night and I'm going to be disappointed when the restaurant relocates... but if you have time to check this place out before next year... don't miss the opportunity!
This dinner was a birthday celebration for my mother. The hostess was very professional and greeted us well. We got a table upstairs with a beautiful view of the dock and ocean. We chose to order a seafood platter to share and fish for the entree. All of it was delicious, fresh, and made perfectly. During the meal, one of the girls gave my mother a birthday balloon. The other surprise was a complimentary birthday dessert lit with candles, my mother was very happy. We took a stroll out to the back on the dock for some photos and the view was just breathtaking. The overall experience was very delightful, definitely a place for any special celebrations.
This place was once worthy of raves, but has sadly gone down hill. Still a lovely and unique setting, but the food is nothing to write home about. Our server brought us the wrong side-dish, and charged us an extra $50 for an item we did not order. He also did not apologize for this. I would reccommend fellow guests check the items on your bill.
Now closed at this location, however the intention is to reopen elsewhere supposedly. The Chef at least, is going to do something in the future. That's what I heard from a local.

I took the big guy here for his B-day at the end of the summer last year. Everyone local had recommended it as a Vancouver icon. This just IS the place to take guests from out of town and birthday people :-)
The Cannery has a lot of history as it sits right on the water front in the old port of Vancouver. Now the land is pretty much closed to the public in the name of security and you have to explain by intercom what the purpose of your trip is, like a mini border crossing.
The location provides for fabulous views of the water, from the dining room, unadulterated by commercial development. The bar is so cozy and even has a fireplace, so I highly recommend it for a romantic late afternoon or evening visit. The quality of service is friendly and efficient and the food is above average but not five star. Great for business lunches with a view too. The desserts are quite good as well, so drinks and dessert would be a reason to go here if you already have dinner plans elsewhere.
This is such a picturesque location, that although there is something inherently corny about the place, my opinion remains that it's worth the visit in spite of it's remote location and also BECAUSE of it as well.
Nice place over by the port. I hear they're moving, which is a shame, because I wonder how they'll recreate that feeling of being in some nostalgic, nautical-themed dining hall.
My appetizer: The Trio of Tartare is a mix of ahi tuna, salmon and scallops, with some soy sauce and wasabi on the side. If you are a fan of sashimi, you will find this delicious, as I did.
My entree: I ordered the Salmon Wellington--salmon inside a flaked pastry. Inside the pastry above the salmon is a layer of delicious diced mushrooms. At first bite, I tasted a buttery-crisp consistency. The salmon inside was not as juicy as I had hoped, but the pinot noir sauce solved that problem.
The view out to sea is lovely: Lion's Gate Bridge in the center and some red cranes to the left. Over to the right, we saw the sun set behind the hills.
The only gripe I have of the place is that our water tasted like chemicals from plastic. We had to have our server replace our water. I suspect it's a byproduct of using bagged ice, because our new glasses of water had less ice and tasted more like potable water.
The Cannery is a great little place which is tucked away in the middle of an active port. It almost gives that feeling of exclusivity as you have to buzz into the Port of Vancouver to gain access to the location.
Set right up against the water with large windows, along the full length of the restaurant, you get a great view towards Stanley Park and Lions Gate bridge just out in the distance. On chillier days, the windows are a little cold, but in my opinion, is worth the price of a spectacular view. Time it right with a beautiful day and a striking sunset and you'll never want to leave. Highly recommended for a romantic date.
The food is excellent and cooked to perfection, and the service is not only friendly (and in our case, very funny), but very prompt and always on the ball.
If you haven't been before, make sure you go before they move to a new location in the Spring of 2010!!
Terrible teenage chefs over cook not-so-fresh seafood. Service was lackluster at best. Pain to get to as you will be frisked by homeland security. I had better food at a Red Lobster - now that's just sad isn't it
I use to live in Vancouver and this was hands down my favorite place....miss it alot, sorry to see it's closing, hope the new place is as good......
Sunday brunch was great! Beautiful location- right on the water. Getting there is another story... you have to go through a security gate but all you do is say you're going to The Cannery and they buzz your right in. The server was attentive and kept up with the coffee and water. Everyone received a buttery flaky croissant to start off with. I ordered an omelet with goat cheese, chorizo, and mushrooms- came with toast and potatoes and a little bit of fruit on the side. The omelet was good. The kiddo ordered pasta with alfredo- came tossed with carrots and asparagus. I wish restaurants would use a smaller pasta for the kids menu b/c it's hard for a preschooler to twirl noodles neatly on a fork. Kiddo just wanted to shovel the food in his mouth so it was kind of funny to look over and see him with all his noodles hanging out of his mouth all over his face. The hubby was a little bit disappointed with his dish - the black cod hash because he didn't get a lot of cod. Our friend who ordered the same dish was happy because he did get enough cod so I'm not sure why the discrepancy unless they cooked it all up in the same pan. Our other friend ordered the warm seafood salad and it looked wonderful. Tons of seafood on top of her salad greens. Afterwards we walked out on the little walkway and took pictures. Gorgeous day with a fabulous view- what's not to like?
I've been here twice. The first time was okay, call it three star. Food pretty good but not really up to the reputation or the price. The second time I brought a group of business associates from out of town to give them a sample of what Vancouver can provide. I thought the view might make up for the okay food.
Not so much.
The service was weak. The food was frankly bad. My colleagues were polite to spare my feelings, but I checked in with them later and they were hugely unimpressed.
Given the good recent reviews, perhaps I'll try it after it moves ... after all it could not possibly have gotten worse.
If you're looking for seafood look no further, this is the place to go.
Hidden amongst the docks you actually need to announce yourself to the Port of Vancouver security to even get down to the restaurant down.
Certainly some of the best selection and preparation of seafood (mainly fish) you can find. Making a reservation is highly recommended.
It's definitely a common place people come to celebrate special occasions. Whether it's birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, etc this restaurant seems suitable for any excuse.
Service is top notch and when it's nice out and the sun is setting, it provides a pretty dramatic atmosphere for enjoying that meal with someone special.
took my friend here for her bday.
very cozy place.. been around for over 35 years.. its actually closing down in march 2010 from what i hear so nows the time to check it out while you still can. access to it is kind of interesting.. its on commissioner st.. and you have to pass through a security gate thing.. you press the help button and have to let the person know that you are going to the Cannery restaurant and they will open the gate for you.
went on Sunday nite.. didn't have reservations.. cuz there were at least a couple bday parties going on.. they did have room in the lounge though so ended up sitting there which was nice.. it has a bar.. a fireplace which was nice.. they also had a big flatscreen TV on the wall which really seemed out of place even though it was the 'lounge' area.
we had 2 servers (i think one was a trainee) but they were both pretty good. they started you with complimentary bread which came with lobster oil and balsamic vinegar.. delicious!
they were out of the wine we originally wanted so we ended up getting a Reisling which was nice.
we got 3 'appies' and an entree to share between 2 people.
we started with a lobster bisque which was pretty cool cuz they kind of 'prepare' it before your eyes.. they present a large soup bowl with some lobster in the center.. then the server ladles the soup around the lobster.. it takes her like 2-3 minutes to do so but its interesting to watch.. and its a sizeable soup.. i'd prefer if it had been a little warmer but it tasted good.
we also had baked oysters.. which were really good.. the accompanying sauces and flavours were the kicker.. especially since i'm not a big fan of oysters.. my friend loved them.
we also had the roasted mussels.. they were outstanding! they came out on a sizzling grill and the accompanying chorizo on the grill were so tasty. this was definitely the best dish that we had.
for the entree i chose the boullabaise.. the seafood was tasty.. didn't care too much for the fennel and tomato broth which could have been better.
for dessert we had the jacques' trio which they comped cuz it was my friends' bday.. it consisted of a blood orange creme brulee (unlike any other creme brulee i've ever tasted).. a sorbet on an edible spoon.. and a hazelnut torte cake.. really well done and all really tasty.
total bill was about $140 incl. tip et al.
the view is really amazing too.. its right on the water and you can see north van. we came right around sunset so it was nice to see and they have a little suspension walkway that leads to a dock that you can walk on if you like.. no sturdy rails so be careful!
if you have an ent book.. you can get 2 for 1 on entrees cuz this place is in there.
if there is a way to split the rating for the food and the service, i would do that... but since there's no way, i'm just gonna have to average both scores...
honestly the food is simply marvelous... i ordered the 10oz steak with lobster, it was very, very delicious... the steak was quite tender, and the lobster was excellent... oh and let's not forget the bread with the lobster oil, it was too tasty... i could really taste the lobster in the oil... also ordered the calamari and the mussels... simply sensational...
unfortunately... i find the head waiter quite impolite... i mean the other waiters were friendly and all, but the head waiter... i don't know what's up with that... maybe caught him on a bad day... it was a party of 14, when we asked for the bill... he just gave us one big bill and didn't split it for us by seat... i thought it would be quite common to split the bill by the seat esp when it's a bday party... anyways we asked him to split it, he came back like 20mins after... it was split but everything was in one long bill, like one meter long... i thought he would hand a bill to each person, but he just placed it on the table and left... then we have to get him again to explain who is what seat... and then when i waved him over to charge my credit card, he kept holding onto it for another 15mins before coming by and say are u sure that's the amount u want to charge, i said yes, assuming u told me the correct seat number... what a pain...
The "pretty good food" or "terrible service" reviews must have resulted from an off day. The three times I've been to the Cannery now, everything was absolutely impeccable. The service was professional, friendly and attentive, yet thankfully not as stiff as the cozy but somewhat old-fashioned ambiance of the restaurant might lead one to expect. And the food, oh, the food. I won't lie: Out of the three times I've been there, I've had their signature dish, Salmon Wellington, every time as an entree. It's simply perfect, down to the delicious Pinot Noir sauce that they serve alongside. But my fellow diners have been a little more adventurous and, so far, every single one of them was indeed "impressed". Paired with an extensive wine list, full bar and the breathtaking bay views (it's a pity they're planning to move), this is still one of my favourite places to take visitors. And the Cannery has yet to disappoint me, or them.
