How can you say no to a cupcake when you walk past this place in CrossIron Mills? I actually live in another province and it was shocking to see a cupcake shop in a mall. Since I've had about 3 cupcakes during my trip to Calgary, I decided just to have 1 last one haha.

Regular size cupcakes are $2.95 each. However, if you get the 6 or 12 pack, it's a bit cheaper. Also, don't be fooled that there are only a few cupcakes left because they only put a few in their display window. Me and my sister both opted for their daily flavour, chocolate diva. All I have to say was that it was DELICIOUS! Sorry for shouting, but it was pure deliciousness!

I would highly suggest that you try a cupcake...or maybe cupcakes!

I honestly want to give them a 3.5 actually, but not a 4.  The cupcakes here are simply awesome, though I do find them to be a little pricy.  Still, as a snack (or as I use them, a means to drive my dieting co-workers utterly insane with temptation), the cakes are moist and the icings are great (though I do find them a bit excessive and greasy texture a little).

Still, as I believe that virtually all of the cupcakes are made here for all 3 locations, and that they do have an interesting selection of flavours, it's better than the Crave ones (though I prefer the Bliss & Co. overall), and still fab and overwhelmingly tasty.

Buttercream Bake Shoppe has 3 locations in Calgary:

    - 121-1013 17th Ave SW (Downtown)
    - 261055 Crossiron Blvd (In CrossIron Mills Mall)
    - 510 77th Avenue SE (In the Calgary Farmers Market)

I've been to the location in CrossIron Mills Mall and the Calgary Farmers Market.  So I'll just start my review, seeing they're all the same owner.  Buttercream Bake Shoppe has many different flavours of cupcakes offered.  They've got daily, weekly,  monthly and holiday flavours.  They also offer cakes, cookies and sweet buns.

I've tried multiple flavours of the cupcakes especially at the Mall because I can never just walk past the display, I always have to stop and look.  I found that the cupcakes are not as moist as other cupcakes I've had, and it seems that they don't put as much sugar in the icing as other bake shops to make them really sweet (just the way I like it).  That may be good for some people but in my humble opinion, I LOVE the icing on cupcakes and love the sweetness!

Recently, I tried the red velvet and chocolate diva cupcakes.  I found the red velvet had a crumbly cake, not moist at all but the chocolate diva was more moist.  The icing on the red velvet was fine but on the chocolate diva, Spence thought it tasted like a watered down icing and I agreed.

It's usually a hit or miss for cupcakes, and the red velvet seemed like a miss this time around.  But I think Buttercream Bake Shoppe is a great stop to satisfy your cupcake craving ..for the moment.

I've only ever tried the cupcakes, but they were moist and delicious, with lots of flavour combinations. I thought I was a die-hard Crave fan, but Buttercream definitely gives them a run for their money!

My husband and I decided to order cupcakes for our wedding reception mainly because you can place your order online, which made it faster and easier for me to decide what I wanted and set up a pick-up time. I like that their website has descriptions and photos of each of the cupcakes, so you can get a sense of what flavours you want before you order (if you haven't tried them before).

My order was perfect and ready to go when we got there. We were even able to rent a cupcake stand completely last-minute. Our guests loved them and my coworkers raved about the leftovers I shared with them the following Monday!

The only thing I would change is that the staff person I dealt with took probably 30 minutes just to get me my order from the back and there was only one other person she was helping in the store (on 17th). When she did get to me, the pickup went quickly and we arranged the cupcake stand easily, but then she got confused about the payment. It seemed to me like she was someone's daughter who just wasn't trained very well and I didn't have a lot of time to waste on the way to my wedding reception. Sorry, they lose a star for that part of the service. Especially as people were lining up behind me!

All in all though, the cupcakes were awesome and I would recommend their order system for your parties and events.

    Well now!
I am a fan of Crave cupcakes butttttt..... When i walked into this place ! i was in love right away!! man do they taste good soo many different kinds and flavs..i know crave only has certain ones. My fav of all is the hot chocolate cupcake with cocolate frosting and marshmellows on top with chocolate shavings!! The lavender vanilla and red velvet are ones to try as well. Next time i will order a Cupcake Cake!! Honestly guys Crave should of been named Buttercream because crave tastes more buttery then These ones and i hate that butter taste !! My manager always brings in crave but i have refused to eat them unless they are from buttercream!! enough said~! Its like 3 dollars and sum cents to buy one you can get them at cross iron mills mall too i found a little kiosk and i have glued my self to it!!

My coworkers and I stopped in here for a quick dessert.  The shop is really cute and the cupcakes are beautiful, and it looked like they also made cupcakes and cakes to order.  The woman working at the desk was neither friendly nor un-friendly when we visited.

I ordered one of the blueberry cream cupcakes, and my thought was that it didn't taste as good as it looked.  The cupcake was nice and moist, but it tasted really processed and somewhat bland.  There was also not a lot of blueberry flavour in the icing, which also tasted a little bit limp for buttercream.

I'm not sure what other options you have in Calgary for cupcakes, but maybe try those out and compare between them!  This one did not impress me.

As somebody who's been desperately trying to lose weight for the last 6 months, obviously the kind of products offered by Buttercream aren't on the top of my "to do" list - but when I found out they're going to be sponsoring a show I'm producing and performing in, I figured it was time to stop by and check them out.

First of all, the store is exactly what I would want from a bakery type - it's tiny, unassuming, and blends in well with the surroundings from the outside... but once you come inside everywhere you look are the bright colors of icing and sprinkles on every kind of baked good imaginable. There's also a wall of some of the most fascinatingly designed cakes I've ever seen. (on the day I went there was a cake that looked like 3 pillows stacked on top of eachother, which didn't look like a cake AT ALL!)

I only tried one of their cupcakes (chocolate raspberry) and it was AWESOME. Everybody else has already summed up the overall quality of these cupcakes better than I ever could... but apparently there was something different about this one, which the store manager, a lovely young lady named "Frankie" (hopefully short for something, lol) tried to explain to me... something about using egg whites instead of some other ingredient... but I was too wrapped up in how good it tasted to catch it all. One of my colleagues who came with me also pointed out (which I, as a cupcake novice, never would have thought to mention) that, unlike a lot of cupcake joints - and if you read the other reviews you probably know the one I'm thinking of - this place seemed to find the perfect cupcake to topping ratio where neither felt over-powered by the other. Very well done!

That brings me to the service. While she was the only one working the counter while we were there, she was an absolute TREAT to deal with, pardon the pun. While my colleague was asking questions about everything in the store she had such impressive knowledge and passion for the business, it was contagious and made us all really CARE about things we probably normally wouldn't have thought to ask. We were never rushed, or made to feel like we were only as good as the money we spent, it had that very old fashioned, customer-value based small business type feel where she really wanted you to enjoy your experience there. Even if the store itself wasn't fascinating, which it is... and if the cupcakes weren't delicious, which they are - this delightful young woman would have made nearly any business experience a joy. As my colleague put it upon leaving, "She couldn't have possibly been any nicer."

All in all, for being a few minute stop off in a bakery in the early afternoon, this little detour practically made my day, and I couldn't be happier about having them as a sponsor for my show. So check them out! - and no, this is NOT part of our sponsorship agreement - it just really is worth the time to pop in.

Buttercream Bake Shoppe on 17th Avenue has officially become one of my favourite cupcake shops in Calgary, I accidently found it while returning my videos at Blockbusters.  I literally felt like a little girl entering a candy store; the cupcakes, cakes, chocolates and cookies looked so incredibly scrumptious.  I swear amazing things come in small packages!

Buttercream features 56 flavours of buttercream icing; the cupcake combinations change every week, unlike the 12 options that you can only get at Crave you can bet at Buttercream you will find a cupcake that you haven't tried yet.

And oh my god the flavour, not as sweet as Crave cupcakes because they use butter, not lard shortening or margarine.  Expect a fine silky velvety taste in your mouth that will remind you of the first homemade cupcake you tasted at a local church bazaar.

Buttercream can also make specialty cakes made to order for any occasion, and they swear they will decorate whichever way you like.  I believe the prices range from $40 for a 6 inch cake to $70 for a 10 inch.  You can choose from chocolate fudge, vanilla, carrot, coconut, lemon and milk chocolate red velvet.

Service is always warm and personable.  And for that added treat all boxes are wrapped with a very sweet pink bow, so delightful that you won't want to open your package. But you do, believe me.  From beginning to end expect a mouth watering ride.

Group projects have been the bane of my existence as of late. I don't love doing school work in groups, but I don't make the rules, so a girl's gotta do, what a girl's gotta do. Group work it is.

Last week it was the birthday of one of the fellas in one of the groups I'm working in and I felt bad that instead of partying it up like most 18 year old boys (oh god, I sound like his mother), he was meeting with us to work on the project.

I ended up making a pit stop at The Buttercream Bake Shoppe to bring him a couple of cupcakes to help make his day. Can I just say that walking into this bake shop COMPLETELY made MY day?!?!?!? Everything they make is SO beautiful, and it turns out that everything they make is tasty too ;)

Their cupcakes are stunning, as are their cakes, chocolates and cookies. With icing flavours that I haven't even experienced in my wildest dreams, Buttercream Bake Shoppe has quickly risen to the top of my "Where to shop for a cupcake" list.

The staff was exceptionally friendly, and the way they packed my cupcakes was the perfect finishing touch.

I am very impressed with these guys. Hey... MY birthday is coming up...*cough hint hint cough*.

Women and cupcakes, eh? It still makes no sense to me, but I know of females who won't eat Buttercream's cupcakes because they're not Crave cupcakes. You'd have to have some sort of learning disability to hold a grudge like this against a poor cupcake lady, trying to peddle her wares in this economy.....

Anyway, my girlfriend found a few things in here she liked based solely on their own merit. Which made sense. But the thing that troubles me about this place is the coconut and vanilla body oil. This is taking the whole cupcake trip to a new level. Now, apparently, you don't have to settle for just eating cupcakes, you can become one.....

It's bizarre. We left and I went back in to buy her an apple and cider cupcake when I noticed what looked like powdered sugar on my shoulder. I asked the woman at the counter what the hell was going on.

"Are you trying to turn me into a cupcake?" I asked. She acted surprised, like she had no idea where I picked up that sugar on my shoulder. I don't know what's going on down there, but my girlfriend tells me if they were to make a cupcake out of me, they wouldn't put as much icing on as Crave....

So many cupcakes...so little time.  The cupcakes are great, although I am not a cupcake connoisseur and I must admit they do taste similar.  However, what I do most enjoy at this little bakery is the macaroons.  These are fabulous and not to be missed. Delicate little morsels of deliciousness ready to be devoured by the dozens or savoured  ever so slowly.  Your choice.  I've done both ways and I can't decide.

It's an unexpected find at an outlet-type mall. It's a small little kiosk so their cupcakes aren't made there, but they have a ton of great flavors such as passion fruit and peach. I loved the passion fruit. You could definitely taste it.

The macaroon (lavender) was a little disappointing. It was too sweet. I had to throw out a lot of the cream inside.

Get some ASAP because as they don't have a lot of room, they have little to go around.

After cycling from the southside to midtown, I decided to reward myself with a little treat - Buttercream saved the day.

It was a pretty slow day; however, the only other customer was picking up a group order for another local business and left with about 8 trays of 6 cupcakes each. I guess it's a cult following.

I enjoyed a London Fog: vanilla cupcake with Earl Grey-infused blue icing. I definitely enjoyed it. A touch less sweet than Crave and Bliss & Co cupcakes but with as much creamy goodness (hence the name.) Pricing is on par with these two as well.

One distinguishing factor is a weekly rotation of cupcake flavours, useful if you're a true diehard, I suppose.

Chomp chomp chomp... and just like that, there goes the benefits of cycling here in the first place.

    $2.95 for one cupcake.

Delicious and soft; this is what you're looking for in a cupcake.
Their food looks so good they use it as a decoration.
Like any good bakery these are best eaten on the day you bought them.

Maybe if I hadn't sampled Crave's fare first, I would be writing a different review. But my first impression upon entering the Buttercream Bake Shoppe was 'aren't these exactly the same flavours that Crave makes?' I wouldn't stake my life on it. However, I am certain these cupcakes are a little pricier and no better. I've no idea who was around first, but if I'm blowing money on tiny cakes - I'll go to Crave.

I have never been disappointed by Buttercream. I love love love their cupcakes. They charge about the same for their cupcakes ($2.95) as any of the other similar cupcake places (i.e., Crave). I agree with Gimlet that you should eat it the same day you buy it as there are no preservatives.  They are quite rich and you probably can't eat more than one in a sitting, but that one will be delicious.

My girlfriend ADORES Buttercream Bakery cupcakes. They have about 12 each week and from their website it says they change them up week by week. Unlike Craves they have WAY more selection she says - we have tried many and liked them all. What we found is that their icing is less sweet and more ... true. Not sure what that means but it tastes more like what the name says it is (gotta try the strawberry one and you'll know what we mean). They also sell cookies.  I hear they sell lattes now. Caffeine and sugar  - my two favorite food groups. They are actually less expensive than crave. If you want my opinion you get a better bang for your buck with Buttercream.
