There's the mediocre yet overpriced food but there's also the awesome back patio covered by vines with funky music.
I wish I could fill this really well done bar with food from some of the other great places in the Market.
I paid more than $13 for their caesar salad which was -- meh. I don't mind paying extra for a common menu option so long as the item is a little bit different.
Their burger is good and actually will set you back less than the salad (go figure) and as I mentioned off the top -- this place has a nice vibe to it.
The patio is heated and although it doesn't have a view it has a lot of character with the vine cover.
There's a roaring fireplace inside next to the bar and if you stick around well into the evening you'll see this place transform from a quiet pub into a club with great beats and shoulder to shoulder crowds.
It's worth checking out either after or pre-dinner. -

I used to frequent this fine establishment back in my university days. I always remember it as being dark, with cheap beer and good music. I happened to find myself back in Ottawa last weekend and ended up here for mostly nostalgic purposes. This place is way classier than it used to be, which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not? Either way, the food was tasty and the beer was reasonable. The service? Pretty meh in my opinion.
As nice as the classy make-over is, I kind of miss the old Brig that was a little dingy, a little divey and a little more fun. -

The Brig is one of the 2 default pubs in my neighbourhood for when I want a quick drink on a patio. The other is usually The Clocktower Pub when I want drinks and a quick snack.
The Brig is alright, beer is not extremely expensive and it's in a great location with a patio overlooking York St. The Brig is a decent sized pub with a patio in front and one at the side. I prefer sitting at the front patio.
The Brig doesn't have the largest menu for food but it's ok with average prices. The food isn't as good as The Manx pub and the beer menu is not as extensive as Pub Italia but it's just a run of the mill British pub. If the weather is nice you should definitely drop by and have a beer on the patio and people watch! -

Decent pub. We got a burger with fries, and a side salad. The salad dressing was really tasty, but the salad leaves were kind of rotted, which was a bit of a downer. (It was probably the kind you get in those plastic containers in a grocery store, and the dark leaves always go bad first!) The burger was pretty good though, as were the fries. The waiter sort of messed up our order as well, but fixed it, and we didn't pay for her error in the end. I wouldn't rush back here, since there's a tonne of places in the Byward Market to eat.

I had the filet mignon with a glass of house red cab suave. After walking past (and being turned off by) yuppie-style places like Play, this unassuming pub called to me. Friendly staff, good and quietly played music, and a unreservedly Great steak (medium rare) made it a truly refreshing, relaxing, unpretentious experience. I was on business and after a long day in a suit, doing the 'professional thing', it's just what the doctor ordered!

Happily this pub/bar hasn't changed in forever. Cheap drinks, classic tunes that everyone feels like they listened to in high school, grubby bathroom in the basement and rarely has a line up. The courtyard patio is amazing in the summer!

If the weather is warm and I'm in the market, this is my favourite place to go for a pint. The bar has a great dark ambiance, the staff is nice and the beer selection and food quality is decent. But that's not why I come here. I love their patio. Not the one that wraps around the front and juts out in the ByWard Market, but the one down their little alley that has large wooden overhead beams strewn with vines creating a light leaking and dreamy patio. This is the place to go talk with friends or read a book if you're in the area. The quality of their sangria is pretty good too.

Totally love this place. It's not your typical pub. There is great variety of food and the presentation is nice. There is a very nice heated outdoor patio is (not the one in the front) that has cool art on the brick.
