When I was a kid I used to periodically help out at my mom's law firm around the corner from The Book Mark and on those days we'd take a special lunch trip to the store and I was allowed to pick out any book I wanted, even if it meant special ordering it (which took weeks and weeks).

Back in those days there was no Amazon, no Chapters or Powells to order books from - just you and the owner of this tiny little shop. I used to order a buttload of of Gordon Korman, Christopher Pike, Paul Zindel and Judy Blume books from this store. I believe it was on Grenview Avenue at the time.

It's since moved right onto Bloor Street but it's still got that old charm to it. The staff is super friendly and helpful and you get the feeling that they all actually read books, care about giving decent recommendations and take pride in the displays in the store. If you truly love books and want to go beyond the faceless Chapters experience and talk to some real book lovers, make a trip to The Book Mark!
