This restaurant always felt like a classy, for old people with a lot of money kind of place to me. But don't get me wrong it's definitely for people from all walks of life. When you walk in, it feels like it was meant for the more wisened or maybe its just made to look like the inside of an old boat hence the name Boathouse.
Their menu is fairly extensive with seasonal specials. The seafood is superb. For a starter we ordered the tuna tacos, which were so good. The tuna chunks were marinated in a sweet and slightly spicy sauce. For my main, i ordered the steel head salmon which came with roasted potatoes and veggies. Overall my meal was satisfying, but didnt blow my mind. Their drink menu is fairly good with a large assortment of mixes, Martinis, shakers and of course wine. For dessert i had the warm brownie with vanilla icecream, which i could not finish, it was huge!
It was early evening when we got here so the sun was just setting, definitly a beautiful place to dine.

Brutal! Last time we went, we waited an hour for our food and the restaurant was half full at best when we were seated.
Made a reservation over the phone. gave our name when we arrived. Literally, over the course of maybe five minutes, the clueless hostess who has a screen in front of her with names of people who have made reservations asked for what name the reservation was under three freakin' times! Memory like a sieve.
The food itself was fine. Nothing spectacular. Way overpriced though considering the quality and portion size.
Have been to this location before and to the one in New West. In general, it's OK. Put it this way, if I have $100 to spend for everyone, I'm not going here again. -

Impromptu anniversary dinner...
My husband and I came here for our dating anniversary. Yes, we still do that. A friend gave us a gift certificate so we decided to go that night. Since it was a Wednesday, it was not busy at all. We get seated at a table with a half window... yes, a half window... half in front of the window and half beside a wall. I face my husband and let him look out at the dark waterfront. Oh, there's a Cactus Club...
Our server is the greatest. I don't remember his name... I can fish around for the bill and if I find it, I will edit my post. He was so attentive, gave great recommendations and even sang us a song at the end (it was a game, we had to guess the song to win a prize). We didn't tell him it was our anniversary, maybe when we come back for our wedding one instead.
I love the free bread, but on this night it was hard as a rock. He asked us if we wanted more... no, no... please no...
To start, we ordered an appetizer our server recommended. He got us the scallops with a different sauce than what it normally comes with. It was delicious. I am not sure how it would have tasted the way it's normally prepared, but this was wonderful. The black pepper sauce went really well with the flavour of the scallops.
My husband ordered the salmon burger with fries, while I got a steak. I enjoyed my steak, but felt guilty because my husband only got a burger. He seemed really satisfied with his choice... I justify my steak choice with the fact he drinks beer and beer goes with fries.. Sure. I didn't really eat my sides. The mashed potatoes are okay and the grilled veggies are whateves... The steak was cooked rare like I wanted so I was happy. Plus I was stuffed on scallops.
All in all, a great experience for us. -

Terrible dinner. Haven't had such a bad experience in years it was my husbands birthday and we wanted to enjoy a Prime Rib dinner and couldn't have been more disappointed. The Boathouse used to be known for a great meal. What happened????

It was a hot Thursday evening and we decided to eat somewhere by English bay. Every where we tried to go was to busy, that the wait for a table was an hour. The last resort was The Boathouse Restaurant. There was nine of us, and a lot of people just got salads. We waited 15 minutes just to get our drinks, they were pretty busy, so we weren't to upset. I ask the waitress for a second caesar, I never get it, and I have to ask her again. We waited over an hour and a half to get our food. By that point most of the restaurant was cleared out, and we are still waiting. We ask how long our food is going to be, and they say it's coming right out. Approximately 20 minutes go by, we finally get our food, but just to find out that our food is cold. Someone had a chicken dish that tasted like fish, my fish tasted like cardboard. I was really disappointed in this experience, I will not be going back.

We were a party of 9 last night, and like another reviewer mentioned, service was excellent but the food came out very slowly. We were there from 8:00pm until 10:30pm and the place was not busy. We didn't mind the wait since we had a large enough group that we could entertain ourselves. It was a bit odd, I could imagine if we were a smaller group that it would be strange to be sitting there and waiting in a quiet, almost deserted dining room.
I chose the $28 dineout and got the firecracker shrimp, cedar plank fish sampler, and cheesecake. The firecracker shrimp was just amazing. I loved the flavour, and the fact that you got lots of big, juicy prawns (not tiny shrimp). The cedar fish plank came with arctic char, halbut, and steelhead in pretty sizable portions. The majority of my friends had the crab and lobster ravioli, which is an excellent choice if you want something rich and cereamy.
The cheesecake slice also came in a generous portion, nothing like the teeny weeny slices you typically get in nicer restaurants.
For ambiance this place gets more like a 2.5 stars on a Tuesday night, but the food was great and our server was very nice, if a bit sporadic. If you do the dineout, you definitely won't leave hungry...
** Check out my photos for a picture of the firecracker shrimp :) -

Their menu and website and sign outside and in the bathrrom advertise happy hour from 3-6 but server says they have suddenly changed the rules to happy hour after 9pm... Fail for service at the Boathouse again. So angry!

We wanted to go to Cactus Club last night but it was packed so we decided to give this place a shot...we will only remember the view and the sunset. Forget about the service and forget about a good tasty food.
We ordered a seafood salad with no dressing and well cooked fish (my wife is pregnant), but we got a cold out of a can seafood with a ranch dressing and off course nothing from the waiter.
My mango in my salad was ridiculous and closer to an apple...
We left and said thank you to 3 waitress while going out, none of them stopped talking and all 3 ignored us...
We'll never be back!! -

Not sure what everyone is complaining about. Amazing view. And just three more words. Miso Crusted Halibut. Wow, the flavor was amazing. Even the table behind me couldn't stop going on about how amazing it was ... Wait, service sucked. Bad, actually.

Dine out here sucks.
We had a party of 6 yesterday, our server was an Asian lady, sorry but I forgot her name. We were promptly seated at 7:30pm, 4 of us did the $28 dine out menu, the other 2 had just an entree each. The restaurant was only 1/4 full since it was a Monday.
It took 20 minutes for our bread basket to come, only 1 small dish of garlic butter between 6 people. Our bread basket was never filled, neither was our butter. Our appetizers took 30 minutes arrive, which only consisted of soup and salad!! The longest wait of our lives was for our main dishes, it took a full hour! Our waitress also forgot a glass of wine for my coworker, and we had to chase her down.
Food is not served hot, I can see the cooks where I sat, and they consisted of young cooks that took their time and probably were just happy they had a job. They were also eating while cooking, another bad sign! I had the dish that consisted of 3 different types of fishes, and the fish was not throughly cooked. The rice was super bland and overcooked. I could barely finish my dish. The last part of the meal were the desserts, we had to ASK our waitress for our dessert, so that took another 30 minutes. She literally forgot as she was clearing out plates, she never mentioned it, and we had to bring it up. She was probably secretly hoping we would forget.
It almost felt like I was in one of those culinary schools where you go to eat, knowing the students are learning, and the cooks are beginner chefs, but I expect better from a real establishment. It reminds me of the days I use to attend VCC as a student.
We sat here from 7:30pm to 10:00pm, talk about slow service huh?
My biggest complaint about this place is the service, it sucks. I've been here before, and the service also sucked, I even had a different server! Our waitress this time was quite lazy, she almost seemed like she didn't want to work. If we asked her for anything extra, it was like we were doing her a favour or something. At the end of the meal, our waitress was hanging around her coworkers downstairs at the lounge area chatting, I think she forgot she had a table to clean up, and was probably leaving it for someone else to clean. Drives me nuts when a server doesn't do his/her job, I can say this because I also use to waitress. Don't let their fancy black shirts, apron and towel fool you, they don't have a clue what their doing, and it's like a chain reaction...down to the kitchen, hostesses, bartender, bus person etc!
Come on Boathouse, your Yelp reviews are not great, and Catcus Club is opening up right across the street from your establishment, better watch out because they might take your customers away!! At least you get service at Catcus Club, and the food is not too shabby. -

The good news - beautiful views of English Bay!
The good news stops there. We've been impressed by the Boathouse in Horseshoe Bay and New Westminster Quay before, but certainly not here.
Granted we were a table of 7 - a larger group. We behaved well, were easygoing about issues, but what a disappointment!
The restaurant was not busy, but service was very slow and inattentive. Our server, while friendly, needed to be reminded about drink requests, brought coffees and teas without spoons, and one of our 7 orders was incorrect. When there was an issue we had to work hard to get his attention, a couple of times waving our arms across the nearly empty room to try to flag him down at one point. The food was OK, but certainly nothing to write home about. The Mocha Ice Cream Cake that two of us ordered was so old the ice cream was ice crystals. Appeared to have been thawed and frozen again.
Overall a huge disappointment and we won't likely return to this particular location. -
Review from Ryan L.
So as everyone has said: great view. No doubt about that.
Service ... meh. Not so much. A bit overly scattered across too many tables, maybe?
Food ... it's fine. Nothing too grand.
Prices ... not too bad, but given the quality of food and service, I've had better. -
Review from Cody S.
We came here on a nice and rainy day and we were seated right on the covered patio. Don't come here on a rainy day! I immediately had an entire shoulder covered in water and asked the waiter if there was anywhere we could move. Our waiter smiled and told us that she would figure it out for us. After a little while, we decided that there wasn't a good chance of being reseated and decided to try and have a good time.
The food is good. We had the lobser ravioli and the Sockeye Salmon. It was fantastic. I appreciate the creativity and quality of the ingredients used and would be honoured to be able cook seafood this way.
The service is lackluster....i began to wonder where the party really was because we were obviously in the wrong place. There were parts of our evening where we had no idea where the service was. I don't like having to get up and find someone for the check. That should be a no no for the management. I hope they fix that!
Overall this place has a great view and I don't regret it. I hope that some things change. We will be back soon to see! -

My work colleagues invited me to go with them to the Boathouse near English Bay for Friday afternoon happy hour. I've actually been to this location years ago for dinner and decided that it just isn't worth the money because of the poor service and sub-par food, so I was a bit apprehensive about going. However, it has been a while, so I thought I'd give their happy hour a go to see if anything has changed. All I can say is: "eh. meh."
The place (we were seated in the lounge area) was actually quite dead when we were there, but that may have something to do with the fact that it was a cold, damp, and dark afternoon. Still, it felt quite comfortable inside - the ambience was cozy because they had the fireplace going, and we were seated by the window which gave us some nice views despite the weather and the construction by the beach. Our server was very pleasant and accommodating, but the food was just not good.
I ordered some raw oysters, which were a good deal at a buck a schuck, but man, I don't know who was schucking those babies because I don't think that person knew what he/she was doing. The oysters came with grit and pieces of shell, which, had I not been careful, would have probably resulted in me cracking my tooth. Not good. I also ordered some of the yam fries($4), which would have been fine had they not been a bit soggy; and the potstickers($4), which came highly recommended by the server, but was, unfortunately, quite awful. It tasted like overcooked har gow - seriously, it almost seemed like they bought some har gow at Hon's, pan fried them to death and presented them on a white plate.
As for the drinks, the lemon drop martini ($5) I had was way too sweet. I don't know what possessed me to order the damn thing anyway, but it was just gross. The wine on special was fine for $5 but the size, I thought, was a little on the stingy side.
All in all, I would not return because even though the service was good and the ambience was nice, the food was terrible and just not worth the money. There is better value to be had elsewhere. -

The boat house is OK and that's about it. The food is OK, the service is OK, everything is just OK. What else is there to say. Would I go back? Probably not. At that price I would much prefer to be somewhere where the waiter is going to be NICE to me and not treat me like he has other, more important thing to do.
On the positive side I was able to get a reservation with 1hrs notice for 8 people on a Saturday night...(maybe that should have been a hint.) -

I really struggled as to whether I should give this restaurant 2 or 3 stars. I've been to the New Westminster location and would have easily given that location 3 (or even 4) stars. The English Bay location was (sadly) a big miss. The husband and I went down for the weekend brunch and had high hopes. I ordered some delicious egg-shrimp-veggie combo (I can't remember what it was called and the menu has changed up a bit) and the husband had a combination of three different seafood bennies. The food was "okay" at best, but I very disappointed as I was expecting to really love my meal. My meal was runny and bland. I could barely see the egg in it. By the end of my meal I couldn't wait to finish my meal and go (not a good sign). Our server couldn't look more bored, and he mumbled. Maybe more like whispered? He was practically inaudible.
On a positive note (yay!) - the view was beautiful. Definitely a winning view when the sun is shining! Can't beat it. And, as I mentioned before, I've had a good experience with the dinner menu at a different location. I'd just suggest skipping their weekend brunch. -

Boathouse - Kitsilano 2/28/2011
Good Food; Good Service and Good Value in addition to Beautiful View.
We plan to have Chinese food for dinner today but due to some bad experience we had the last few times with some Chinese restaurants. We change our plan and decided to go to the Boathouse Kitsilano since we have had good experience with them in previous occasions with other locations.
Here's what we ordered:
Steamed Mussel in Pot with Curry sauce
West coast Seafood Pasta
As usually the food is good; the service is good and large portion in both dishes, very good value for a high end eatery place. We always enjoy having dinner at Boathouse; it makes you feel very welcome by the service. Thank you. -

This place was quite nice, however, I have to say it is the summer people. Turn the fire place off. It is way too hot. Yes I realize it gives the essence of romance, but in this heat people are more like where is the air conditioner.
In that restaurant I would suggest a cold dish, the air flow inside was not so good. However, the patio was booked solid. -
Review from Ken B.
Rough night at the Boathouse.
Started off with the lobster bisque, disappointing! Not creamy, tasted like it was made with beef broth, yet somehow bland. And then topped with chilled lobster that only served to make the dish lukewarm overall. I should've sent it back but I was trying to keep a positive attitude. Unfortunately, things didn't get better. The lobster ravioli did get sent back, over-powering fishy taste . . only to be replaced by the 'safe' option of halibut and chips . . . Overcooked and bland. The prime rib lacked any seasoning, and my request for sea salt was daunting for the kitchen staff. It took 15 minutes for it to arrive.
The manager was kind enough to get us dessert because of the ravioli, so we ordered the 'espresso' creme brulee. We couldn't even finish our free dessert. Couldn't taste the espresso, no flavor, texture was off . . . one bite and out.
Service was fine . . . Though her enthusiasm seemed to wane as dinner went on and it was pretty apparent the food wasn't pulling its weight.
One great thing about this place? Incredible view of a gorgeous sunset . . . And that's about it. -
Review from John F.
A bit sad that a literal boat house is being built across the street, spoiling the view from the lower level, but being three tall, the restaurant bits look over the new kayak rental building. Being touted as a seafood restaurant, I was a bit disappointed by the limited selection of seafood items on the menu. That aside, the food was good and the sunset lighting made everything look grand.

Review from Courtney S.
Totally mediocre and over priced. The crab cakes were overly fried, the salmon was dry and the lobster ravioli was just so so. The bread however is pretty good as was the service, which is why this place got two stars and not one.

The view is great, but I can't say the same about the service.
My girlfriend and I went for brunch on a lazy Sunday morning, it was still relatively early, not that busy and as a result we were lucky enough to get a seat on the patio. Unfortunately, we sat there for close to 15 minutes before anybody even approached our table. When somebody did finally notice us, the waiter promptly asked us for our orders, before even bothering to find out if we wanted some water or even asking if we had any questions about the menu.
Over all the food was pretty average, but it probably would have tasted a lot better without the bitter taste of being ignored in my mouth. -
Review from Cindy B.
This place is really a tourist trap. The best thing about it is its beautiful view of the English Bay.
I met up with some friends there for dinner one Sat night and was seated by the window for a great view of sunset. However, it went down from there.
I ordered the black pepper sea scallops. It was cooked deader than dead. When I told server that it was overcooked, the first thing he asked was if I thought the black pepper on the scallops were charred bits! I was going to call it a day but he kept assuring me that he would do something about it, tho never did.
Two of my friends had miso crusted wild BC halibut. It was nicely crusted but no miso flavour. It was also overcooked and dry. The sauce was pretty nice, but not enough to redeem it.
For the price one pays for dinner, it's totally not worth it -

The food is average, but go here for the upper deck. With a raised private(ish) room surrounded by windows and a view of the ocean, this is a beautiful place to dine on a sunny day. Since I live in East Van, it's not often in winter that I enjoy an ocean view for a prolonged period of time. So if you're in ocean-withdrawl like me, grab a drink with a gf and get your vitamin D. The food isn't groundbreaking but it's tasty enough. Honestly, in a location like this it's hard to ask for more. I've met friends downstairs in the restaurant but I wouldn't return to there. The light is where it's at!

2 times so far- on the deck - one sunny day - sunset - and one rainey! Oh Well: Had the fish and chips tohight - "Killer Whale Combo" Pacific cod and chips - Killer whale ale used in the cooking - and then the crispy apple and cranberries with ice cream! Great -casual crowd - nice staff - except the plates are very heavy and large - I feel sorry for the wait staff and the large heavy plates - could be lighter I'm sure. (fries and nice salad and a tartar sause with either dill and or tarragon - ) good!

New Westminster, BC
Of all the Boathouse locations, this is my favourite. It has the best view. I've never been able to snag a patio seat, but the downstairs lounge and the upstairs dining room both have wide walls of windows for looking out over English Bay at the sunset.
It's a good place for a date because you get all the fancy restaurant frills - bread baskets, linen tablecloths, candles, etc. at a slightly more affordable price. My favourite thing on the menu is the seafood tower. It comes as three plates holding oysters on the half shell, prawns on ice, smoked salmon, and mussels, plus crackers, dipping sauce and a spot of salad. It's more than enough for two (better be, costs about $50), and with drinks and dessert or another appetizer, makes a lovely light dinner.Listed in: Date Night

The Boathouse offers the prototypical local flavour and preparation of seafood.
This particular location has a great view overlooking English Bay which is what draws me here. Especially during the fireworks and other beach events.
The food is solidly delicious and the staff have always been very attentive to your needs and are constantly coming by to check on your progress and to refill the glasses of water. -
Review from Nick S.
This place is a bit expensive, but the food is outstanding.
My girlfriend and I split an order of calamari and some yam fries, both of which were pretty amazing. The calamari has a light breading and comes with two sauces, one of which is an excellent sweet chili sauce. The yam fries come with a Tograshi mayo (made in-house), the combination of which is perhaps the most mouth-watering taste ever conceived by man.
If you come during happy hour, note that it's only available downstairs in the pub. If you want the better views upstairs on the deck, you'll sacrifice the happy hour deals. -

The thing I remember most about The Boathouse in downtown Vancouver is the food, and not for good reason. My friend and I came here and tried their classic calamari and it was awful. I can't remember exactly why, but I do recall that it was so bad we couldn't finish it and ended up telling our server. He kindly offered us another dish for free. The second item we tried was their smoked salmon, spinach, and artichoke dip. We thought we couldn't go wrong with dip, but alas this too was well under par.
The bad food experience really did it for me, and regardless of the good service and seaside ambience I won't be coming back here unless I'm desperate for food. -

English Bay location - This has good, reliable seafood in particular with a couple of token chicken/beef dishes. It's civilized with linen and a wine list without the pretentiousness, formality or creativity found at finer establishments.
My standard order is the scallops with a teriyaki-like sauce and very tasty garlic mashed potatoes (some locations have changed them out for rice).
The real appeal is the location (Denman & Beach with fabulous 2nd floor views over English Bay), and that it's got reliable good-value food westcoast fare.
The casual 2nd floor patio overlooking English Bay is very, very hard to beat especially during the summer. -
Review from Ken T.
We came here for Sunday brunch. We arrived around 11am and we wanted to sit on the upper deck and enjoy the fresh air and hear the ocean except they told us that brunch is served in the dining room and the upper deck is for lunch only. That's because they have 2 separate kitchens and the servers will get confused, but it is ONE restaurant. So I thought that was odd. We asked if we could order brunch in the dining room and take it upstairs to the deck and we were told no as well.
So we went to the dining room, which was still very nice nonetheless. Still had a great view of the sea wall, we could see people riding their bikes and the ocean. Very nice.
Place was not busy at all for a Sunday brunch. I wonder why? Which meant that our food came out quick. Great food! I love the complimentary corn bread and carrot muffin. So tastey! The brunch portions was big too.. 3 eggs?? I'm fine with just 2!
I would come again. -

This review is about the deck only.
My wife and I have lived in the West End for many years and always enjoyed the Boathouse itself. The other day we went to the deck on a beautiful day and ordered the appetizer "Hot Appy Share Platter" for 2 (or 3 they say on the menu) for 18.99. and a couple drinks. The staff was very nice who served us. Then the food came. This consisted of approximately 8 mussels 3 tiny pieces of beef on sticks and 3 (!!!) beans in a tempura like coating, 3 prawns and 2 tiny peaces of Olive bread. The icing on the cake was that one of the mussels was closed. For 18.99 (!!!) the chef could have at least checked that all the mussels were open. The bill came and for this TINY appetizer (for 3 - HAha) and 2 drinks each (beer) the bill was 65$.
The deck is a total tourist trap and should be avoided at all cost. Unfortunately it's one of the nicest in Vancouver. -

I've lived near this place for years but was their menu has always looked fairly dull for the price point. I finally decided to have lunch there. I think I was one of three people in the restaurant at the time, yet my salmon burger took 45 min to arrive-- when it did I had to scrape off the charcoal from the inside of one half of the bun. My caesar salad was actually wilted (as in not fresh) and overdressed. The service was poor and the food was not quite adequate. The Boathouse obviously resting on its location laurels.

Superb view for the sunset. Best view on second floor.
The fist is very fresh and all dishes we tried were very well spiced up. Also quite creative in their flavors. The pepper scallops were well cooked, but a bit too sauced up.
Service was good and prices decent. -
