Coming from a larger metropolis, and finding ourselves in the ethnic wasteland-y-ness of this city, it was a great treat to find the Blue Nile. The food is authentic Ethiopian, with spices being shipped over by family members regularly.
The buffet can't be beat, for meat eaters and vegetarians. And the injera! Yum! Nothing like it. (curious? http://en.wikipedia.or...)
The owners are super sweet and wonderful people who we love chatting with whenever we're dining here.
It's a great place to hit if you're in a hurry, before a movie/play/whatev, as dinner's served as soon as you walk in the door. -

I'm surprised that I'm the first to review the Blue Nile. This little gem has been around for some time now on Head St. in Esquimalt. The Blue Nile is an East African buffet restaurant.
I've always ordered take out, but I will have to bring a group and sit down for a meal soon. The decor and ambiance is very fitting, plenty of African decorations everywhere. There is plenty of seating and the tables aren't too crowded (I do find the green lights a bit of an odd choice overhead mind you). I believe it's a husband and wife team running the show, they are always very friendly and welcoming and usually remember you if you've been in before. The only downside I've found with the staff is the difference of pace we sometimes have found ourselves operating at. To be fair, their main focus isn't take out, i'ts buffet diners eating in, so I guess it's not surprising that I'm often more rushed than they are.
The food is interesting and delicious. Without looking at their menu, I honestly can't tell you 2/3 of the items I've tried (The reddish stuff's great! ;). I enjoy everything I've eaten except maybe the (and I'm guessing here...) spinach dish. The chicken is moist, tender and has very tasty seasonings with just a little bit of heat at the end. I'd recommend going in and just trying everything. The thick heady scent of the spices when you walk in the door is intoxicating. On my last visit I had intended to only order one assorted buffet to go containers to split ( they usually fill one to go container so full that the lid will barely shut), but when I walked inside and was met with the aroma, I had to order two instead.
If you've never tried East African food or just haven't yet been, I recommend trying out The Blue Nile. -

I love this restaurant. It is a hidden gem, and I used to go every week when I lived nearby. Small, intimate and nicely decorated. Oh yes, and the food is excellent.
