Review from Nandan F.
Ottawa, ON
Went here for dinner on a weekday. I am glad I made reservations. It has a cosy ambiance with candles on the tables. It looks fancy but is priced alright. Pricey but worth it in my opinion.
The service was excellent and the server explained the menu in detail. I had the Octopus for starters. It was amazing and definately worth a try. For mains, I had Duck Confit and my friend had the Chicken Putanesca. The portions were big and the duck was perfectly cooked, appropriately garnished and tasted delicious. We took our time and the server didn't make us feel like we had to leave after the meal.
With a drink each, food and coffee, we spent a total of $92. They have a nice courtyard as well that is usually open for lunch and dinner ofcourse weather permitting. -

While the food was decent, it was grossly overpriced. I have limited exposure to what restaurants charge in Ottawa but similar entrees could be found in cities like Montreal or Toronto for much less. More egregious however was the service. Despite some nice ambiance, the wait staff was inattentive and it took hours to order and pay for our meals. Furthermore, they ran out of some of the items on their menu. Not worth the expense.

The food was pretty good, but I give it only 2.5 stars because it's simply not worth the price. I had a $37 steak that should have been $27. The carrots that accompanied the dish were simply not good. My wife had halibut, and that was pretty good. They charge per soft drink (no free refills) and don't tell you when they offer to refill your glass, so watch out for that.
Spent $97 for two people with no alcohol, no apps and no dessert. Too expensive for the experience. -

Food was great but the service was terrible. Arrived Saturday afternoon around three, It was fairly quiet and seemed well staffed. Our first sign should have been the fact that it took the staff three or four minutes to acknowledge us to be seated- first fail. Secondly, after ordering the server's favorite dish, he brought out a completely different entrée by mistake - second fail! When asked if we wanted a water refill the server never came back - third fail! It was kind of the server to take 50% off the dish that came out late; however, the overall "taste" left in my mouth was a sour one. Two thumbs down for the "Rotten Tomato!!!"

This place is awesome! i ate dinner here twice and i thought it was great! When i go somewhere for dinner more than once on a business trip, it means either one of two things. There is a limited selection of restaurants in the area (poor me)... or the food and ambiance is actually pretty good!
Thankfully Ottawa has endless restaurant choices and The Black Tomato is one of the better options here. Service was good and the outdoor patio seating provides great live music.
From burgers to lamb, i was happy with everything i ordered and i hope you will be too! -

It's down in the market with all the other little pretty places, but this one I always make a point of going to. Is it the beer list (ample)? The wine list (acceptable)? The menu with suggested beer or wine pairings with every dish (time-saving)? Is it the quality of dishes (truly tasty)? For me, it's the music.
The Black Tomato has a mid-sized entrée menu of about a dozen or so items, each that sound as good as the one before it. It's a sit-in restaurant with a smallish kitchen so you may be warned that dinner service could be delayed somewhat. Fair enough. Order a drink, get an appetizer, and go browse the music bin by the entrance. The Black Tomato also sells CDs. The music playing in the restaurant is already eclectic, and the music available for sale is equally as interesting. World music, jazz, blues, electronic are the genres you'll find there.
I try to challenge myself to purchase an album from an artist I either don't know or haven't heard of before. No disappointments yet from either the food or the music.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Sat in the courtyard for lunch. It is indeed one of the prettiest couryard locations in Ottawa. (By my estimate, the prices are 20 to 25 percent higher than comparable fare in a less lovely location.) The menu is extensive. It seemed a bit strange that the full dinner menu was also on offer for lunch but so be it.
Service was okay but not excellent. My request for salt and pepper was greeted with a raised eyebrow. Is that now considered gauche? Should I have waited for the omnipresent girl with the 4-foot pepper grinder to come out and do her thing?
The food was excellent. I had an open-faced, grilled flank steak sandwich with mushrooms, onions, and brie on top. The brie had spent some time under the broiler and the thin strips of cheese rind had a crunchy, almost cheese doodle consistency - very tasty. While I would have prefered the steak on the rare side, it was very tender and flavourful. The sandwich was served on a heel of fresh, crusty, garlicy bread.
Slight quibble with the salad. It would have been much better with dressing on the side (or maybe just more dressing). Since the mound of shaved carrots on top absorbed all of my allotted dressing, the rest of the greenery underneath was pretty dull.
My partner's mushroom and onion burger looked very good . However, because we're in Canada, the (legally mandated) well-done patty verged on the dry side. Like my sandwich, however, her burger was served on a lovely fresh Italian bun with tons of peppery, garlicky mayonaise. -

These Marty McGillicuddies must be sweating to pay the rent, because I dont know anywhere in MANHATTAN that charges 34 dollars for a farm raised rainbow trout. Pleasant setting, but really....if you boil down what they are really selling (wild boar from a farm from ...Trillium Meadows Farms...Ontario???? Wild???), it's hideously overpriced. They probably know that.....but looking at crowd here, most of them are probably focused on the drinks and their own clothing....style over substance. A couple of stars for them for doing the "locally sourced Alice Waters template"...

Good place. Went there on a Saturday night. The place is a bit above ground level, but once inside it felt like we had descended into a private wine cellar. Very pleasant level of darkness, just enough to make everyone look pretty without having to grope around to find your utensils.
Without a reservation it was either sit at the bar and a circular table at the front of the room that looked like it was reserved for a bride and groom or the PM or something. Naturally we chose the latter. The waiter then handed us each a copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls, er, the hardcover, one-dish-per-page menu. I kind of wished I had some bookmarks to help with my decision. Everything sounded good, but being with a vegetarian friend, I opted for the butternut squash agnolotti while she had the crunchy naan artichoke "flatina", which I think that means "pizza" in ancient Hebrew. The pasta was very good, (but) very creamy. Went well with the walnut cream cheese topping. Actually, the best part of it was the massive, oblique bowl the dish came in. I want to know where I can get one to class up my Mini Wheats at home. We also had the baked brie in phyllo to start, and that's always a good way to get the measure of a resto because the delicate ingredients are easy to screw up. But the pastry was flaky and fresh, and the cheese melted perfectly.
Would do come here again, but would reserve to avoid the look-at-us table. -

Great quirky restaurant with wonderful dishes that you won't see often in other places. Inside it's a nice intimate dinning room and outside you have a patio in a large courtyard shared with other restaurants. I definitely recommend this place. Try something new and pair it with a great wine or beer. Great for a date, as long as your date is a little adventurous, and if they aren't why are you on a date with them in the first place!

Great food and location. Interesting menu and a large selection of good beers and scotch to go along with it.

I was in town for a convention held at the Westin, and The Black Tomato was only a block or so away. I loved the atmosphere, it reminded me of some of the old pubs in southern Ireland. I had the tofu stir fry, it was very good! I'm not a fan of peanuts, but the peanut sauce on this dish was delicious! The Iced Tea wasn't so great, it was sweetened and a bit on the gaggy side. But I prefer a good brewed Iced Tea with no sweetener.
The service was fast and friendly, and we were seated right away.
Definitely check this place out! -

Really enjoyed our visit to the Black Tomato. Had the grill artichoke nann - it was very good. The dressing on the salad was also very enjoyable. Music was cool as other patrons have stated. Fast, friendly service. Would recommend to friends coming to Ottawa.
