Review from Murray W.
Whenever I bring a salad to work for lunch, I can't get excited for lunch time. It's just not possible. Fortunately, having The Battered Fish within walking distance down the boardwalk from my office is an easy cure for the veggie-blues.
Now that it's warm enough for the BF to be open, but early enough that there isn't the constant crowd that's there during the tourist season, it's the perfect time to go.While I may have foregone my salad, I still had some dietary conscience, so I stuck with a one piece fish and chips ($6.49). After a short wait while I people watched and chatted with my co-workers, my name was called and a handy box containing my meal was passed to me. The fish was a little on the small side, coming in at half the size of many of the other offerings in the city. The flavour and quality made it worthwhile though, with a light, perfectly golden-brown batter and fresh, flaky fish. The fries are hand-cut and skin on shoestrings, with a little bit of crunch to them and good potatoey flavour. I should have gone with the regular salt over the fancy schamncy sea salt though as the large granules of sea salt tended to mostly bounce off the thin fries.
I'm definitely going to make a few more visits to the Battered Fish before the boardwalk gets too crazy and am looking forward to more fryer deliciousness, while the salads take a backseat. -

A perfect place to go when you're in the mood for delicious battered fish. I shared the seafood sampler with my friend and with the loaded fries was more than enough for us. The fish was cooked perfectly, scallops and clams were awesome, and the coconut shrimp was lovely. The loaded fries were the perfect compliment to our Sunday treat.
And if you like feeding birds then the waterfront location is the place to be! -

Craving a little bit of lunchtime grease? Then this is the place for you! I tried the Battered Fish for the first time today at lunch and oh man, it was a piece of fish and chip heaven. It's closeness to work may become a problem.
So for lunch I tried the haddock tips with fries and cole slaw, and it was delicious. I LOVE FRENCH FRIES and these guys do a nice fry. Perfectly shoe-string, perfectly crunchy, so so good. There's also two options for salt (sea salt or normal table) -- which at first seemed like a good idea, but huge chunks of sea salt on fries somehow didn't work. Good in theory, not super awesome in practice, I think. Haddock tips were flaky and were dunked in just the right amount of batter. And they clearly have some good frying skills, they were done perfectly.
A nice surprise was the cole slaw, which I rarely anticipate. I love me some cabbage (yeah, it's weird), and I thought the Battered Fish does an excellent slaw. Just the right amount of tartness and creaminess. BIG win. I'd go to eat that alone.
Another win? Everything came to $8. EIGHT DOLLARS. Can't beat that Halifax. Visit the Battered Fish -- next on my list: the lobster roll. I hear she's a winner. Frankly, I'm pumped.Listed in: 30 Days of Yelp

As a non-fish-eater, you'd probably think there aren't many reasons for me to love our waterfront fish 'n chips hut, but yet love them I do. Why? Easy.
1) They can tell you exactly where the fish comes from. We live on the water and we have incredible seafood, so why order it in from god know's where? TBF gets theirs from a local fish market meaning it's fresh, it's Atlantic Canadian, and it's supporting local fishermen.
2) They pump their menu full of creative treats from wasabi mayo and other sauce creations, to mouth-watering poutine variations that make use of specialty cheeses and spiced gravies. Deeelish.
3) The fries. They're cut in-house, they're topped with sea salt, they're thin and crispy, and they're served hot and fresh. Plus they give you a reason to use the cool fork dispenser. Seriously, check that 'ish out.Listed in: The Waterfront Strip, Yelp Eats: 2011, Poutine Powerhouses

Literally bumped into this place on the Halifax boardwalk this weekend and was enticed by the special of the day 'Scallop Burger' with citrus sauce and fries, $7.99. Well, that settled that! I ordered it and a Propeller Root Beer and tucked in.
The scallop burger was a bit misleading, well it wasn't a smooshed patty of scallops, it was a veritable fresh and hot breaded and fried scallop pieces on a bun. The bun was cardboard, the only thing I disliked about this, so I put all the sauce on my scallop balls and went to town.
They were insanely fresh, freshly fried and the batter was panko-perfect. Then I got to nom on the fries which were delicious enough on their own, an added bonus when it came all down to it.
Would definitely recommend this to a tourist or a local, a delicious quick bite to eat while watching the ships come in.Listed in: Halifax Trip!

Just a hop skip and a heart attack from Bishops Landing, this place is a deliciously naughty kind of find; I felt like a fifteen year old who had discovered that his neighbour wandered naked in front of her window every evening.
Three enormous pieces of nicely battered firm and fresh haddock, a pile of home-cut thin and luscious golden-leg fries, home made slippery tartar sauce, another hot and saucy tartar concoction available for the rare middle class white folk who are feeling adventuresome, and all of it bursting over the edge of a warm square foot of box.........for $10.49!!!!
I mean come on, for that price we should offer to clean the fish or do the dishes...or at the very least publicly flagellate ourselves for mixing metaphors and thinking un-Catholic thoughts. They must buy fish by the ton just as one of those enormous ships glides by on its way to China.
And the three kids behind that counter actually seemed happy!!! And no, they weren't glassy-eyed!!!
This may become a very bad habit....it's halfway home from drinking Nash's fabulous IPA's at The Hart and Thistle--just a little touch of cholesterol to "soak up the booze" as Withnail says--and then slide off to sleep to the sound of ancient fog horns...Perhaps I'll feel a slight thud in the night, a couple of desperate flutters as the old ticker sputters to a halt, and then I'll just slide off into fishy oblivion, dreaming in salt and pepper. Not a bad way to go, really. -

This little seafood shack sits right on the harbour. It's a clean restaurant with a lot of menu choice. I tried the seafood platter for one. It was a decent amount of food, and it was well prepared. It was pricey--with a bottle of Coke Zero, the total came to almost $21--especially since the overhead is low with no seating other than public picnic tables. But it is in the heart of the tourist area, so what should I expect? You get a choice of dips; I tried the wasabi mayo--good choice.
I was bombarded by seabirds at my table. They were quite bullish at times, trying to get their beaks on the shrimp tails I'd discarded beside my box of food, but, again, what could I expect, I was on the harbour. -

We were looking for a quick place for lunch and the Battered Fish is a must to visit in Halifax. The lobster rolls have an insane amount of lobster on a fresh bun, accompanied by thinly sliced fries. They do not put sauce on the lobster roll but you can add tartar sauce or wasabi mayo. The lobster roll is less than $15 which is a good deal. There are a few picnic tables out back overlooking the water (and the birds will be waiting for any scraps).

I have to give this update on The Battered Fish, the other weekend I was going to an event and we stopped by here for a quick bite.
The meal was not the best, I am not sure what was off on this night.
The fish was greasy and just did not taste good, we did not even finish the two piece order we had. The pieces of fish were small as well. The fries were good.
We did order the caesar spinach salad, it is small and runs about $7.00. I expected a little better, it was spinach with some bacon bits, and a small container of dressing. Nothing homemade on this salad. I am glad we got that, because we ate that over the fish.
If I went back I would like to try the haddock bites, they looked good.
Sorry Battered Fish , but you were not on that night, if it wasn't for the salad, I would have given a two star.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I've only had the fries, here, but they were really yummy! A little thinner-cut than I'd expected, but still hot and delicious. It's a perfect little place to stop by and grab a snack while you stroll the boardwalk.

The fish is so fresh, so tasty, and so varied that it's almost not fair that they're in a hut on the boardwalk. The fish and fries were fresh and fried perfectly. Well, I shouldn't say fish because I had lobster and she had a scallop burger. The prices for daily specials are especially good and there is plenty of seating nearby, with benches just in front and picnic tables around the corner. The bread could be better, or at least fresher. Using buns from a little local bakery might really put this place over the top. I still can't believe just how good this was for a little takeaway. I miss it already.

Review from Laura P.
This waterfront fish shack had a mighty swarm of folks around its confines, as I meandered along on the last warm day. There were two cruise ships in and the area had a steady buzz, but this spot in particular seemed pretty popular.
Hungry and with a friend, we stood in line with plenty of time to investigate the offerings. The offerings were to be expected: greasy fish type dishes battered and fried to perfection. Its the "so wrong but it feels so right thing" this place has going on... and just 'cuz everyone else was doing it, we did too.
Opting to split the traditional fish 'n' chips, I'll say that it was delicious. I understand the appeal, as its certainly that certain treat to sneak into ones day.
Large portions and one heavy palate, half a dish was enough for me. Yum, yum delicious and no regrets- The Battered Fish is a real catch. -
Review from Ellen C.
This unassuming shack on the boardwalk near the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic serves up succulently fresh haddock that is cooked to order for each customer. The five-minute wait for your food is well worth it. The lightly-battered fish comes out tenderly flaky, although a little on the greasy side. The side of poutine that we upgraded to was a pretty good rendition as well, although again quite greasy. The kiosk serves a large selection of other fast food items that we didn't get a chance to try. The fish and chips, however, were some of the best that we had on our trip to the Maritimes.

I'm going out on a limb and giving this place 5 stars. Why? B/c they produced a damn good fish and chips. Better yet....they combined my love of poutine with fried fish. Does it get any better than that?
Seriously, fresh fish fried to order - you could see them dipping the fish into the light and crispy batter on every order. The batter itself was light and airy...a bit like Japanese tempura and honestly, just the way I prefer it. The fish itself was perfectly cooked with lots of tenderness and super moist (literally, flaking at the touch of my fork) - a large piece where one would have been more than enough for a single person. Dare I say it was perfect? I think so. The thing I really appreciated the most though was that they allowed us to substitute an order of poutine in place of regular fries for an extra $1.99. They also had other substitutions like sweet potato fries...but I get all crazy around the "p" word and quite frankly....nothing hits the spot like a good poutine. I will have to dock them a notch for not having the best curds at hand. They definitely weren't the squeaky kind, but the dark brown gravy was good. The fries themselves were not nearly as crisp as Phil's, but they married well to all the accoutrement of fat and greasiness I was inclined to eat that day.
Besides, fish and chips, they also serve the usual assortment of fried seafood goodness and hot dogs. I imagine this is the same as the one on Bedford Hwy...but just more ideally located for the visitors like us. You can't miss it. It's right next to the Beavertails. So if you're still ravenous and need a dessert as well, you could be set for a caloric overload. Head on over to Cows while you're at it too! (Some of the harbour seals might be eyeing you longingly like they did me that day.)
Overall, amazing fish but above average chips. I was in the mood for fish n' poutine that day...so 5 stars for obliging my silly request.Listed in: Ahhhhh......fish & chips or…
