Review from Vanessa G.
A wonderful German bakery started by my family friend Katerina, you can now find her amazing breads and cookies being carried all over town (including Whole Foods). She eventually sold her bakery and the new owners are holding up the tradition of best quality ingredients.
At the bake shop they will make you sandwiches and serve you soup and it always bustling with people.
My brother worked here for years when they first were getting established and he would always bring me the white chocolate raspberry loaf (i have only seen in the bake shop), and it is to DIE FOR! Also the chocolate chip cookies are my favorite cookies in this entire city. You can buy them individually here (or at Gene coffee shop on Main St.) or in packs of 6 at Whole foods.
I like that they sell 1/2 loafs of bread (multigrain is my favorite) because i find i can never get through a whole loaf on my own. My mom and friends swear by the spelt bread which is heartier and tastes really healthy.
Don't pass up a visit here if your in the Lower Lonsdale area. -

The baked goods are natural and tasty, the bread is superb! The staff is super friendly! One of my favourite place to go for sure!A+++
To the person below me, you can get refined sugar pastries everywhere else, just take 5 steps in either direction. This bakery does things the right way. -

This place is not only well - located, but also very friendly. Almost never any lineup. People who are regulars love the place. So many delicious options!
They have vegan offerings -- you MUST try the quinoa/chocolate squares, not only healthy but to DIE FOR! I don't say that about a lot of things. Ingredients include coconut, chocolate, quinoa, almonds, and cranberries. Eat them!
Their vegan options are marked as such.
Many, many bread choices including gluten-free if that's a concern.
Staff are friendly and helpful. I had forgotten how great this place was until visiting it today.
You can also sit and have coffee while enjoying. They have mags and papers too. Highly recommended! -

just so people know, this bakery specializes in the more wholesome baked good items. Yes, they carry this stuff at Whole Foods, it has the yellow label with red logo on it. Don't come here looking for sweets of the refined sugar kind, which is what I was craving. They had a few individual fruit tarts and bar cookie type things, but again, of the wholesome variety Come here for wholesome, hearty, whole grain breads. At 12:00 on saturday they were sold out of all sandwiches except salami. The surly lady also added "no tomatoes either". No ambiance despite the three small tables. Just pick up your cholesterol lowering, bowel cleansing loaves to go.
Specialties
Since 1999, North Vancouver's Artisan Bake Shoppe has been providing customers with "honest bread" - authentic artisan breads crafted by hand, leavened with natural starters and little or no yeast, and baked in a hearth oven for a distinctly delicious flavor and texture.
Led by the husband-and-wife team of Markus and Ursula Jaeger, both Master Bakers from Germany, the Artisan Bake Shoppe family is dedicated to crafting pure and natural breads and baked goods, using local and organic ingredients whenever possible. We use only certified organic grains and flour from Anita's Organic Mill in the Fraser Valley, where the slow, low-temperature stone-mill method preserves the grain's nutrients. The result is wholesome, richly-flavored breads that go back to the roots of baking.
History
Established in 1999
Katarina Dittus opened The Artisan Bake Shoppe in a modest space at 127 Lonsdale Avenue in 1999 with a commitment to baking pure and natural breads using locally-grown, organic grains and flour and no preservatives, artificial colours or flavours, or commercial dough improvers.
In 2003 Katarina recruited Master Bakers and husband-and-wife Markus and Ursula Jaeger straight from Germany to help manage her growing business. In 2004, after running the business for a year, Markus and Ursula took over ownership of the bakery and continue to run the bakery today, remaining committed to Artisan's promise of baking honest bread.
Meet the Business Owner: Markus and Ursula J.
Artisan Bake Shoppe's husband-and-wife team of owners and Master Bakers Markus and Ursula Jaeger love good food - this is the reason they love running a bakery. Ursula, who won Germany's National Baking Champion title in 2000, specializes in sweets and pastries, while Markus loves being the bakery's bread expert.
Markus and Ursula felt an instant connection when they met at university in Germany where they were both completing their studies to become Master Bakers. The two were a team from that day forward, and it was without hesitation that they both jumped at the chance to move to Vancouver (without even knowing exactly where Vancouver was!) to work at the Artisan Bake Shoppe. A year later in 2004 they took over ownership of the bakery.
