Review from Vivek S.
Dudley Moore might be six feet under, but The Arthur on College St is alive with smashing antiques, furniture and housewares! (Too soon?) This boutique shop (no wider than a Toyota Previa), is stuffed --like comedy into a Derek and Clive sketch-- with treasures of old. There were 50-year-old copies of Life Magazine, working typewriters, pretty dish ware and jars, "the cutest cookie jar ever", handmade bags, posters, maps, and even a nifty black rotary dial telephone. (If you were born after 1990, I'll explain later.)
They also managed to cram furniture into the already tight squeeze of a store. There were some neat barstools, a desk made of reclaimed wood and some reupholstered dining chairs. According to their website, the couple that owns this place restores old furniture so I'm sure they have different pieces all the time.
All and all The Arthur is a cool shop, though it skews on the expensive side. As I tend to spend more on gifts than I would on myself, that would be the circumstance under which I return.
Obligatory Title Pun: It takes AARD VARK to house a collection like this. (PBS pun! DW!)
Menu Readability: There is a giant illuminated "A" at the back of the store. Good.
Need to mention: They have a $5 bin too.
What this place teaches me about myself: I am not sure if I like the cartoon[1] or the alcoholic[2] Arthur more. It's gonna have to be a die. But Buster Bunny is obviously better than Russell Brand.
